Hedonism and consumerism can prove our downfall, for when we are obsessed with our own pleasure, we end up being all too concerned about ourselves and our rights, and we feel a desperate need for free time to enjoy ourselves. We will find it hard to feel and show any real concern for those in need, unless we are able to cultivate a certain simplicity of life, resisting the feverish demands of a consumer society, which leave us impoverished and unsatisfied, anxious to have it all now. Similarly, when we allow ourselves to be caught up in superficial information, instant communication and virtual reality, we can waste precious time and become indifferent to the suffering flesh of our brothers and sisters. Yet even amid this whirlwind of activity, the Gospel continues to resound, offering us the promise of a different life, a healthier and happier life. (para. 108 in Gaudete et Exsultate) Can you describe how self-centeredness interferes with your growth in personal holiness?

When you support the Bishop’s Annual Appeal, you are supporting the educational costs to prepare seminarians for the priesthood and candidates to be permanent deacons. Our entire contribution to the BAA doesn't even cover those two major expenses. We are grateful to all of you who have contributed this year. We ask that the rest of our parishioners please listen to what God is asking of you, and respond.

You can obtain the most up-to-date information about the donations to the Bishop’s Annual Appeal on the chart in the church vestibule. By the time it is processed and reported in the bulletin, the information is almost two weeks old. What does the Bishop’s Annual Appeal fund? … the Office of Schools, which provides support to all 22 Catholic schools in our diocese. Our office helps our schools work together cohesively for the common good of each other, their respective staffs and the students who attend. We assist in providing everyone with an overall better educational experience. Among other things, we support each school with professional development opportunities for teachers, administrators and support staff; administrative assistance; support with enrollment and retention initiatives; guidance and monitoring on school improvements; oversight and guidance on curriculum; assistance with obtaining title funds and grants; policies and regulations for school guidance and compliance for health and safety regulations.

And when the days of

Pentecost were drawing to a

close, they were all together

in one place.

And suddenly there came a

sound from heaven, as of a

violent wind blowing, and it

filled the whole house where

they were sitting.

And there appeared to them

parted tongues as of fire,

which settled upon

each of them.

And they were all filled with

the Holy Spirit and began to

speak in foreign tongues,

even as the Holy Spirit

prompted them to speak.

OPERATION EL SITIO 2019 Our mission is to support ongoing educational and healthcare initiatives

for our sister parish in El Salvador

This year St. Catherine Parish strives to fulfill our mission by

* supporting modest salaries for two full-time teachers at the village school; * supporting the final stages of the relocation of the village health clinic;

* supporting the education of those who attend the village schools and college; * helping to pay for transportation costs for teachers and students.

We Need Your Help! Please donate to Operation El Sitio 2019!

In El Salvador the government only provides a certain amount of money to cover the expenses for a child to attend school. If the total is insufficient, St. Catherine Parish provides the extra amount needed for those children to attend school. After 8th grade, there is no more funding, so families must pay for their children to attend high school. Because of their low income, many families can’t afford to support even that level of education. Because of your generosity last year, we are thrilled to share that there are SIX high school students this year, and one college student from the village is about to graduate!!

The high school for the El Sitio students is in a neighboring village, which means El Sitio’s students walk an average of 3 hours a day. Three teachers who come to El Sitio’s school walk the same route. Together with the community, we would like to ensure that accessibility won’t get in the way of education.

The money raised this year also will allow them to finish relocating and stocking a health clinic for everyone’s use. If funds are available, they will also improve the village school by fixing roof holes, updating the curriculum, and the community library will continue to thrive. Finally, we can continue to support the people of El Sitio in maintaining clean water for the whole community.

100% of your donations go to improving the lives of our brothers and sisters in El Sitio. You are invited to learn more by attending our next meeting on June 25 at 6:30 in rooms 1 & 3, or sign

up at the table in the Narthex for us to contact you. You can also email Avril Leach at [email protected]. The delegates of St. Catherine Parish THANK you for all your support!

There will be a SECOND COLLECTION at the June 8th and 9th masses.
