material. Una de las medidas básicas
para evitar que esto suceda consiste
en diseñar la rampa con una

“yield to vehicles without brakes” for the rest of the
drivers the bed is delimited by alignment
indicators, even when it has been observed that,
placed at 10 meters, the obstacle indicators give
more help on both sides of the braking bed.
International experiences have demonstrated that
the lack of drainage affects the design of these
devices, since the accumulation of fine particles
fills the voids and compacts the material.
One of the basic measures to avoid this
from happening consists in designing the
ramp with a grade on the base and install a

About signage, its goal is to prevent, guide,
recommend and restrain the driver behavior when
traveling under unfavorable conditions, such as a
failure in the braking system. The horizontal signs
previous to the braking ramp is composed of: a) a
continuous red line of 20 centimeters in width from
at least 2 kilometers before the access; b) the white
color legends on the pavement, indicating the
distance (2 kilometers, 1 kilometer and 500 meters)
remaining before the ramp, and c) the delimitation
of the access to the ramp through squared
components painted in white and red colors.
In the same way, the vertical signs starts preventing
the closeness of the prolonged continuous decent,
as well as the recommendation to check your
brakes (it is advised to dispose of an adjacent area
to the road for this); after, according to the
proximity of the braking bed (5, 4, 3 kilometers,
etc., it is recommended to restrict the speed and

longitudinal drainage, in addition to systems of
transversal sub drainage, to intercept and drain
the water that may enter the bed, mainly in
those zones of elevated precipitation or rain
fall.
Another recommendation is the use of
geotextiles or pavements to avoid the
contamination of the granular material and
facilitate the drainage.
In order to avoid the compaction of the material, it
must be clean and free of pollutants, scarified and
graduated at periodic intervals.
Maintenance is essential for the well functioning of
the braking ramps.
