Es nuestro placer informarle que el Ministerio de Cultura de la Repuacuteblica Checa con el Instituto de Artes y Teatro anuncian oficialmente la 13 Cuadrienal de Disentildeo y Espacio Esceacutenico de Praga (13thPrague Quadrennial of Performance Design and Space)

La Cuadrienal de Praga es un importante evento internacional de disentildeo esceacutenico que desde 1967

cada cuatro antildeos presenta los trabajos contemporaacuteneos maacutes interesantes en disentildeo de escenografiacutea vestuario sonido e iluminacioacuten en varios geacuteneros teatrales asiacute como arquitectura teatral y lapresentacioacuten de trabajos de profesionales y estudiantes de cinco continentes La uacuteltima edicioacuten de laCuadrienal de Praga en 2011 fue visitada por 50000 personas de casi 80 paiacuteses

La Cuadrienal de Disentildeo y Espacio Esceacutenico de Praga es el mayor evento

internacional que explora el campo de la escenografiacutea en toda su extensioacuten ndash desde lasartes esceacutenicas pasando por el vestuario el disentildeo de iluminacioacuten y sonido hasta losnuevos enfoques para la escenografiacutea tales como site specic escenografiacutea aplicadarepresentaciones callejeras vestuario como representacioacuten y muchos otros

Cada cuatro antildeos desde 1967 la Cuadrienal de Praga explora y presenta las uacuteltimastendencias de la escenografiacutea y el trabajo arquitectoacutenico con el espacio El nuacutecleo deeste evento internacional se compone de una exhibicioacuten de maacutes de 60 paiacuteses dividida en

varias secciones competitivas El la uacuteltima deacutecada los eventos en vivo se convirtieron enuna parte importante de PQ ndash miles de profesionales espectadores y estudiantes puedenreunirse en los debates talleres conferencias y presentaciones en vivo En el pasado PQpresentoacute los trabajos de renombrados artistas como Anna Viebrock Julia Taymor JenniferTipton Heiner Goebbels Romeo Castellucci Josef Nadj Brett Bailey Anne Bogart Arpaacuted

Durante la uacuteltima deacutecada la Cuadrienal de Praga paso de ser un evento de exhibicionesindividuales a una organizacioacuten que proporciona una plataforma internacional paraproyectos continuos enfocados en la educacioacuten las exhibiciones el intercambio profesional

y de formacioacuten publicaciones proyectos artiacutesticos propios o simposios internacionalesen el aacuterea de la escenografiacutea contemporaacutenea Asimismo la organizacioacuten opera un boletiacutenelectroacutenico internacional sobre eventos relacionados con la escenografiacutea una biblioteca detextos especializados y una base de datos mundial de escuelas de escenografiacutea

La uacuteltima edicioacuten de la Cuadrienal de Praga en 2011 se enfocoacute en la escenografiacutea maacutesallaacute del campo teatral expandieacutendose hacia otras disciplinas Muchos de los liacutederes es

sus respectivas disciplinas tanto nacionales como extranjeros presentaron al puacuteblico lasinnitas facetas de la escenografiacutea contemporaacutenea que se extiende a traveacutes de muchasdisciplinas y geacuteneros en los cuales el escenoacutegrafo es a menudo el artista clave ndash el iniciador

Durante PQ 11 en los 12000 metros cuadrados del Palacio de Exposiciones sepresentaron y exhibieron maacutes de 60 paiacuteses y regiones Otros 500 eventos en vivo ndashconferencias presentaciones y talleres ndash se llevaron a cabo por toda Praga Pražskaacutekřižovatka proporcionoacute el espacio para la seccioacuten que exploroacute el creciente campo de laarquitectura teatral La exhibicioacuten Interseccioacuten Intimidad y espectaacuteculo se enfocoacuteen el espacio escenograacuteco que permite la conexioacuten directa del puacuteblico con el arte Porotro lado Scenofest presentoacute una amplia gama de proyectos para maacutes de 1500 artistas yestudiantes

Organizadores La Cuadrienal de Praga es organizada por el Ministerio de Cultura de la Repuacuteblica Checa

y realizada por el Instituto de Artes y Teatro Tradicionalmente el evento se lleva a cabocon el apoyo de la UNESCO la Unioacuten Europea la Ciudad de Praga y muchas fundacionespatrocinadores y auspiciantes checos y extranjeros

Las exposiciones de cada uno de los paiacuteses y regiones son organizadas por reconocidasorganizaciones culturales internacionales ndash ministerios de cultura instituciones yorganizaciones artiacutesticas y teatrales festivales internacionales compantildeiacuteas teatrales y prestigiosasescuelas de teatro y arte

Coacutemo participar

Cada paiacutes participante es responsable de los aspectos organizativos nancieros y artiacutesticos de suspropias exposiciones en PQ Cada uno nombra su propio curador yo institucioacuten organizadoraque enviaraacute a la Organizacioacuten de PQ la solicitud obligatoria para las secciones individuales dePQ El Curador y su equipo preparan la exposicioacuten para las secciones principales ndash Seccioacuten de Paiacuteses y Regiones yo Seccioacuten de Estudiantes para las cuales todas las entradas seraacuten aceptadasEl Curador tambieacuten propone a los Comisionados proyectos para los proyectos Espacio Objetos Autores y SpaceLab los Comisionados tienen derecho a elegir aceptar o rechazar entradas

El curador coordina la representacioacuten de su paiacutes en las secciones individuales y se encarga detodos los asuntos relativos a la participacioacuten de su paiacutes en la Cuadrienal de Praga Las condicionesartiacutesticas y organizativas para la participacioacuten en PQ se mencionan en el Estatuo y el Concepto

Los organizadores deberaacuten tener en cuenta que PQ lsquo15 es inclusiva y ofrece a curadores maacutesproyectos de representacioacuten de paiacuteses individuales asiacute como la participacioacuten de artistasindependientes Se ruega seguir con cuidado el llamado y el cronograma Ver el Estatuto yCronograma Baacutesico en este Llamado

Concepto Artiacutestico de laCuadrienal de Praga 2015

PQrsquo 15 llama a los artistas a reexionar sobre la escenografiacutea como un entorno performativoque en el teatro contemporaacuteneo tiene un efecto sobre la relaciones espaciales entre los diferentescomponentes del espectaacuteculo y al mismo tiempo determina la forma de los viacutenculos mentales (conla historia la sociedad el pasado o el futuro) y el viacutenculo entre el espectaacuteculo y el puacuteblico

PQ rsquo15 se enfoca en la escenografiacutea como EspacioCompartido (SharedSpace) ndash un espacioque afecta (determina) las relaciones entre la gente el espacio que es un lugar que invita a generar viacutenculos y principalmente un espacio que proporciona una plataforma para el intercambio ndash deideas historias y responsabilidades sociales

El objetivo de PQ lsquo15 es explorar la teatralidad ndash imaginaria visionaria e invisible ndash comogeneradora de fuerzas socio-poliacuteticas

El objetivo de PQ lsquo15 es por medio del tema Muacutesica Clima Poliacutetica propuesto para la Seccioacutende Paiacuteses y Regiones descubrirrevelar la escenografiacutea invisible ndash el entorno que nos afectaprofundamente a pesar de no ser tangible

A traveacutes de 3 exhibiciones experimentales PQ lsquo15 se ocuparaacute del proceso creativo ndash y la relacioacutenentre el Autor (el escenoacutegrafo-artista) el Espacio (la arquitectura del espectaacuteculo) y los Objetos (cosas con historias)

The Prague Quadrennial of Performance Design and Space is the largestscenography event in the world that explores a wide range of scenographic practices ndash fromstage design and costume design to lighting design sound design and new scenographicpractices such as site-specic applied scenography urban performance costume asperformance and much more

Since 1967 every four years the Prague Quadrennial has followed the latest trends inperformance design to be presented and established The core of the event is expositionsfrom over 50 countries in professional student and architecture parts of the event Howeverthe live events have become more crucial in the last ten years and make up a big part of thePQndash allowing for thousand of professionals audiences and students to meet in discussions workshops lectures performances and live exhibitions Previous exhibitions presentedthe work of renowned artists such as Anna Viebrock Julia Taymor Jennifer Tipton HeinerGoebbels Romeo Castellucci Josef Nadj Brett Bailey Anne Bogart Arpad Schilling BorisKudlička Kristin Delholm and many more

In the last decade the Prague Quadrennial has developed from periodical exhibition eventinto organization providing international platform for continuous projects

focusing on scenography education exhibitions exchanges publicationscommissioned projects international symposia as well as permanent electronicscenography newsletter library and art school world database

The Prague Quadrennial 2011 the previous edition of the PQ focused on expanding thenotion of scenography and invited presenters to show the unlimited faces of contemporaryscenography that crosses many disciplines and genres where the scenographer often becomesthe core artist ndash the initiator-creator

PQ lsquo11 presented over 60 countries in over 12 000 m2 of exhibitions at the National Galleryndash Veletržniacute Palace as well as over 500 live events ndash lectures performances and workshops

all over the city of Prague Besides the main professional and student expositions it provideda challenging space for exploration of theatre architecture as an extended eld in the PragueCrossroads (St Annersquos church) Additionally the inclusive Intersection Intimacy and Spectacle exhibition focused on scenographic space where art and audiences meet and Scenofest included a large series of educational projects for over 1500 artists and students

Organizers The Prague Quadrennial is organized by the Ministry of Culture of the CzechRepublic and realized by the Arts and Theatre Institute Prague It traditionally takes place with the support of UNESCO the European Union and the Prague City Council

Individual expositions of countries and regions are organized by some of the mostimportant cultural organizations in the world including ministries of culture art andtheatre institutions as well as organizations international festivals theatre companies andprestigious theatre and visual arts schools

Each participating country is responsible for the organizational nancial and artistic aspects of theirown expositions in the PQ Each appoints its own curator andor organizing institution that sends theobligatory application for the individual sections to the Organizer of the PQ The Curator and its teamprepare the exposition for the main sections ndash Section of Countries and Regions andor Student Section to which all entries will be accepted The Curator also proposes projects to Commissioners of the SpaceObjects Makers and Spacelab projects who have the right to choose accept or refuse entries

The curator coordinates the representation of their country in the individual sections andnegotiates all matters concerning the countryrsquos participation with the Prague Quadrennial Artisticand organizational conditions of participation in the PQ are stated in the Statute and Concept

In the last years there have been many dramatic world events in the shape of large gatheringsof people connecting to express their will and needs These gatherings have shown the powerof live meetings of people as well as the need of people to use theatricality as their way ofexpressing (acting masking building temporary structures) It is time to rethink theatreas (what thinker Alan Read calls) lsquothe last human venuersquo ndash place where living people haveliving connections ndash and where large groups of people come to share realities narrativesand experiences as well as potential possibilities ction and fantasy Prague Quadrennial2015 aims to revisit the power of theatre and imaginary and discover the powers andresponsibilities of scenography that use yet exceed the theatrical

PQ lsquo15 invites participants to explore scenography as performative environment thatinuences not only spatial relations of elements of performance but also determines mentalrelations (narrative social past or future) as well as relations between the performance andaudience in contemporary theatre

PQ lsquo15 aims to explore scenography as SharedSpace ndash space that inuences (designs)relationships between people space that provides room for relating and more than anythingspace that provides place for sharing ndash sharing of ideas stories and of social responsibilities

PQ lsquo15 aims to revisit theatrical ndash imaginary visionary and non-existent as creative socio-political power

PQ lsquo15 aims to discover invisible scenographies ndash environments that inuence us deeplyalthough they are intangible ndash through proposing Music Weather and Politics as mainthemes for the scenography exhibition of Section of Countries and Regions

PQ lsquo15 aims to focus on the making ndash and the relationship between the Makers (scenographer-artist) ndash the Space (performance architecture) and the Objects (products withstories) within three additional exhibitions

PQ lsquo15 aims to play with situating relating and gathering of people to provide for inclusive

spaces and projects

PQ lsquo15 moves into the very heart of Prague ndash the central area between the National Theatreand the Old Town Square The series of spaces that PQ lsquo15 will occupy include two baroquepalaces an ex-monastery building St Anneacutes church a 19th century building near the OldTown Square where Franz Kafka was born the basement of a house from the middle agesa theatre academy a unique gallery from 19th century City Gallery spaces and many more As a result PQ lsquo15 will happen in deep connection with the city ndash its history architectureand contemporary issues and aims to reclaim for art this otherwise extremely touristy area byexploring the routes and places lsquoinvisiblersquo to usual tourists

The Section of Countries and Regions will be divided into multiple places (a few countryexhibitions each) allowing for visitors to have a short walk and mental space in betweenexhibitions Student events and the Student Section as well as Objects Makers and Space exhibitions will also occupy individual specic spaces in the center of Prague

Because the PQ is spread into a series of places the spaces lsquoin-betweenrsquo ndash the walk throughthe public space of Prague ndash will become part of the Prague Quadrennial exhibition Theroute lsquoin-betweenrsquo will allow for many things to happen including the living outdoorsexhibition Tribes This way Prague itself will become urban scenography for this

international exhibition where the journey is not just a way to get from place to place but theplace itself Where the walk the passing through is the core of the experience and where thehead architects of the PQ become urbanists

The Section of Countries and Regions will take place with the themes of Music Weather Politics ndash basic environments of aesthetics ethics and Mother Nature that provide space forour daily dramas The Music Weather and Politics theme aims to explore environments thathave deeper inuence on our performance though they are intangible as a premise that theinvisible might be the most important and powerful part of scenography

Music in a shared space

Music as the main inspiration in contemporary scenography music can evoke innerspatial visions often invisible ndash imperceptible in the outer world

The staging of spaces in all different contemporary music genres is always an intensecreative process Its goal is to drag the listener into the subject and essence of music During

the staging of a musical production we open ourselves up to a new dimension of a musicalcomposition perception If we are staging music in an authentic space we also discovera new dimension of the space as well as the music Today new noteworthy interpretationsof staged musical works are being created in non-theatre spaces Those are exemplarysamples of a vital dialogue between music and the space

We create music composition but we also create spatial-musical composition ndasha scenography of music based on working with time - using a motion Time unites musicand space all changes inside of it happen simultaneously or contrapuntally Dynamicsrhythm harmony ambiance mood depth and many other musical elements andattributes are possible to develop in different ways also in space

Space reects the life and the spiritual status of a society a deeper perception of a space canhelp a deeper understanding of a human being and in its never ending change we can look for the meaning of our existence

In the following four parts I propose an inspiration for countriesrsquo curators

WeatherScenography invites curators of Countries and Regions Section to [Re]Shape the permeable borders of the accidental the unknown and the mysterious This is an invitationto explore the fragile and possibly accidental moments when ldquobeing thererdquo reveals thehere and the now and the ldquopotentiallyrdquo never again When the ldquobeing thererdquo is a sharedexperience when the audience becomes the atmosphere the changing weather the fog ofmany separate droplets becoming one

The Weather outside the weather as co-author a transient and changeable collaboratorWhen placing work outside the weather is potentially a very positive agent of disruption itcan become the most signicant optic through which we might view that work this mightbe rainbows or vivid crimson sunsets or a large moon or driving rain or mysteriousmists these visually dramatic events that carry their own dramaturgy

The Weather within the weather as scenographic element taking the outside insideThe creation of weather inside fog rain wind and temperature variations are all elementsthat can regularly inhabit our theatre spaces what are the consequences of invitingwhatrsquos out there in here Perhaps as an agent of disruption the potential riskexcitement isgreater when we attempt to control the weather Perhaps we ldquoallowrdquo it to destroy our otherscenography and embrace the uncertain outcome

The Weather within us the audience as weather As well as the ldquotemperaturerdquo of an audience that can affect the atmosphere of an event whathappens when an audience is given direct agency When there is an ldquoinvitation to actrdquoWhen the spectator becomes a creative agent a force (of nature)

Following the main concept of sharing space and its double interpretation of fragmentationand exchange the curators of the Countries and Regions Section are invited to work outa new geography for the PQ lsquo15 by taking on the concept of SPACE as POLITICS

POLITICS aims to establish interactions lead to coexistence and bring into the center of thescene - the designer for performance Recognizing the critical role played by the designerand his responsibility to (re)dene a space as a lively place formed by overlapping layersof intertwining of ideas building a plural identity where a strong statement of politicalorganization is presented in a way no one can remain indifferent Considering spatial featuresthat lead to the rule of POLITICS ndash its capacity for interaction divisibility and congurationthis is an invitation to think about its occupancy itrsquos (re)conguration not only as a lay-outbut as a political attitude and how it will affect the other curators on the borders Tracesof territories in common shared or in contest reinforcing the idea that space is not a staticlifeless body but always on the move

The Space Exhibition

Space is commissioned by scenographerarchitect Serge von Arx who provides the Curatorsof Countries with the brief as well as direction for ways of exhibiting and presenting

The focus of the SPACE project of PQ lsquo15 lies in the meeting and merging ofarchitecture and theatre It is not our aim to show new buildings for theatre butto inquire current tendencies within performative architecture as the symbioticrelationship between theatre and architecture The according projects within the

widest imaginable eld of the arts and architecture can have taken any shape aslong as they were or still are experiential with all senses and distinctly relate tothe specicity of the site they occupy for any duration of time The ldquogenius locirdquo plays a special role in this context as the presented projects will be discussed in theirability to relate to local identities to reverberate question and reshape those

The notion the context of and the perspective on the vernacular are keys to theinquiry of contemporary scenography How these very local identities relate tosuper-national positions in a globalized context and how relevant projects oscillatebetween the two is to be explored in the three parts of the SPACE project at PQ lsquo15

Exhibitors should explore new ways of showing works of scenography thatcommonly are conveyed with the use of photos video footage drawings andmodels All of these forms which we are used to substantially lack the crucialquality of any scenography the relation to the human body

The projects proposed for the PQ lsquo15 SPACE exhibition must have been realized inany artistic performative or architectural format and must have a distinct focuson performative architecture Projects within performative architecture must take place not solely at the meeting point of architecture and performance but where thetwo elds penetrate each other

The SPACE consists of 3 parts which are interwoven and reect the essentialconstituents of scenography Each participant must contribute to at least 2 of the 3 following presentation formats

1) Architecture ndash ldquoexhibition of realityrdquo material samples representing therespective works mounted in the real-size format without further explanation2) Theatricality ndash ldquodiscursiveperformative spacerdquo project description and presentation (exhibition and lectures) as well as live discussions 3) City ndash ldquotheatricality of urban spacerdquo city tour investigating the urban identityTours on a variety of topics genres (by artists teachers curators and theorists)and forms (lecture an inspirational walk a workshop) should be in dialogue withthe distinct character of the Prague city center which represents an utter lack of thevernacular which has become an articial world echoing itself

The Makers Exhibition

The Makers Exhibition is a new experimental addition to the main exhibition aiming toexhibit the living makers in the act of making The project is commissioned by scenographer

(theatermaker) Rebekka A Ingimundardoacutettir

Food chain factory by MAKERS Design food as you would design your theaterdesign designer food Each maker will create a makers journey by designinga full performative food experience - a dining journey in a cooking exhibitionmachinery environment provided by the PQ The scenographers-makers are invitedto design their theatrical food and dining experience for the public in a workshopkitchen in a gallery in Prague In this exhibition the process of the making and theconsummation as well as the traces of the food design will be exhibited

Curators of Countries will be invited to provide the artists who will make the food within thislive exhibition (more information early 2014) We hope that with your help the exhibition can

include a printed archive of cooking recipesdocumentation of the process

The Objects Exhibition

The Objects Exhibition is also new experimental addition to the main exhibition aiming to

exhibit props and their stories It is commissioned by artistarchitect Tomaacuteš Svoboda

Objects Prop Stories ndash we understand objects as reference of stories stories of their

authors users spectators or their performance Objects have their own story birthlife and after-life We are looking for interesting stories hidden behind individual props We will exhibit not only the props themselves but also their stories told byCurators of Countries and Regions within a video installation

Curators of Countries will be invited to provide the props and the stories to be exhibited(more information early 2014)

The Tribes Exhibition

The Tribes Exhibition is the third experimental addition to the main exhibition aiming to

exhibit groups of live people and treat public space as exhibition scenography commissioned

by PQ Artistic Director Sodja Lotker Within a tribe one has to share their own self ndash which might be painful Withina tribe one gets the safety and stimulation of being in a group Do we still need thatTheatricality is colorful fake and over the top Can theatricality be conceptualThe PQ will install healing tribes on the weak points of the city of Prague led byinternationally renowned artists and shamans who will question everything

cada cuatro antildeos presenta los trabajos contemporaacuteneos maacutes interesantes en disentildeo de escenografiacutea vestuario sonido e iluminacioacuten en varios geacuteneros teatrales asiacute como arquitectura teatral y lapresentacioacuten de trabajos de profesionales y estudiantes de cinco continentes La uacuteltima edicioacuten de laCuadrienal de Praga en 2011 fue visitada por 50000 personas de casi 80 paiacuteses

Seraacute para nosotros un enorme placer si Usted acepta nuestra invitacioacuten a participar en este importanteevento y presentar trabajos de disentildeo esceacutenico y artistas individuales de su paiacutes en la 13 edicioacuten dela Cuadrienal de Praga Habitualmente maacutes de 60 paiacuteses preparan sus exhibiciones en las seccionesprincipales ndash Seccioacuten de Paiacuteses y Regiones y Seccioacuten de Estudiantes y preparan representaciones enlos otros proyectos de este evento uacutenico
