01 El verbo go - Revisin
Ya se ha estudiado el verbo goy su utilizacin con distintas preposiciones. A continuacin se presenta un
pequeo repaso, as como la introduccin de go foradems de goseguido por la forma -ing.
Recuerde que el Past Simple de goes went.
GOTO
La preposicin tose usa con gopara dar idea de movimiento hacia algn lugar por lo que tambin se utiliza para
decir que se va a la cama:
I am going tobed. Me voy a la cama.
I dont go towork every day. No voy al trabajo todos los das.
She went tothe cinema yesterday. (Ella) fue al cine ayer.
Didyou go toLondon last Monday? Fuisteis a Londres el lunes pasado?
pero:
Theyve gone home. Se han ido a casa.
Were going on holidayon Friday. Nos vamos de vacaciones el viernes.
She went on vacationlast week. (Ella) fue de vacaciones la semana pasada.
Recuerde que holidayen ingls norteamericano es vacation.
GOFOR
La preposicin forse utiliza despus de goy delante de algunos sustantivos para expresar un propsito:
Lets go fora walk. Vayamos a dar un paseo.
Shall we go fora drive? Vamos a dar un paseo en coche?
Would you like to go fora drink? Te gustara ir a tomar una copa?
We went fora swim last week. Fuimos a darnos un bao la semana pasada.
GO+ -ING
Con frecuencia se utiliza goseguido por la forma -ingde un verbo, para referirse tanto a una actividad deportiva
o ejercicio fsico como tambin a algunas otras actividades, por ejemplo ir de compras:
We are going sailing. Vamos a navegar.
They go fishingevery Sunday. Van a pescar todos los domingos.

La construccin goms la forma -ingde un verbo frecuentemente significa lo mismo que decir
go to o go for. Observe las siguientes parejas de ejemplos que tienen el mismo significado:

Voy de tiendas. Voy de compras.
Hes gone for a swim. Hes gone swimming.
(l) ha ido a darse un bao. (l) ha ido a baarse.
02 Moneda extranjera
Recuerde que tanto los sustantivos como los adjetivos referentes a pases y nacionalidades se escriben con
mayscula en ingls. Observe algunas monedas extranjeras que se presentan a continuacin:

Recuerde que el verbo needse utiliza para expresar necesidad:
He needed some foreign currency. (l) necesitaba moneda extranjera.
We will need some travellers cheques. Necesitaremos cheques de viaje.
I need a few euros and a lot of dollars. Necesito unos pocos euros y muchos dlares.
You wont need your passport. No necesitars tu pasaporte.
Y para decir que se necesita hacer algo se utiliza el verbo needseguido por el infinitivo con to:
need +toinfinitivo

Recuerde que los verbos wanty would liketambin se utilizan seguidos por el infinitivo con to:

03 Cunto? y Cuntos?
Ya se ha visto cmo utilizar la palabra interrogativa howcon el significado de cmo en preguntas como las
siguientes:

How doyou spellyour name? Cmo deletreas tu nombre?
Tambin el uso de howseguido por muchpara preguntar cunto cuesta algo:
how + much
How muchdoes it cost? Cunto cuesta?
How muchis this? Cunto cuesta esto?
Y se ha visto que howpuede ir seguido por adjetivos en las expresiones en las que se pregunta sobre algunacualidad medible como la edad, altura, distancia, etc.:

La palabra interrogativa howtambin se utiliza seguida de mucho manypara hacer preguntas sobre cantidades
(cunto/cuntos?) con la siguiente distincin:
How + much ? Se utiliza siempre con sustantivos incontables.
How + many ? Se utiliza siempre con sustantivos contables en plural.

Las palabras muchy many, adems de utilizarse en frases interrogativas con howpara pedir cuntos y cunto,tambin se utilizan en frases negativas:

Observe las respuestas en los siguientes dilogos en que muchy manyse utilizan como pronombres para
contestar de forma corta, omitiendo el sustantivo, en las frases negativas. Recuerde que muchse refiere a
sustantivos incontables y manya sustantivos contables:

~Not much. ~No mucho.

04 Cmo expresar la cantidad que se tiene de algo
Ya se ha visto cmo se utilizan las palabras muchy manyen frases interrogativas con howy en frases negativas:
There isnt much sugar in the packet. No hay mucho azcar en el paquete.
She hasnt got many tissues. (Ella) no tiene muchos pauelos de papel.
Como cuantificador en frases afirmativas se utiliza con ms frecuencia la expresin a lot of(mucho/s de) tantocon sustantivos incontables, por ejemplo comida (food), como con sustantivos contables, por ejemplo nios
(children):
a lot of + sustantivo
Ive got a lot of foodin the fridge. Tengo mucha comida en el frigorfico.
There are a lot of childrenhere. Aqu hay muchos nios.
Con el significado de un montn, a lotse utiliza en frases afirmativas sin sustantivo, pero fjese en que se omiteofcuando queda claro de qu se est hablando:
~How much moneyhas he got? ~Cunto dinero tiene (l)?
~A lot(of money). ~Mucho (dinero).
~How many studentsare there? ~Cuntos estudiantes hay?
~A lot(of students). ~Muchos (estudiantes).
La expresin a lottambin se utiliza como adverbio de grado y se coloca generalmente detrs del verbo:
verbo+ a lot of
~James reads a lot. ~James lee mucho.
~Yes, he reads a book every day. ~S, (l) lee un libro todos los das.
En el caso de que quede claro por el contexto, puede abreviarse la contestacin:
~Are they studying much? ~Estn estudiando mucho?
~Yes, (they are studying) a lot. ~S, (estn estudiando) mucho.
Por lo tanto compare los pares de frases siguientes en los que a lotofcalifica a un sustantivo (funciona como
adjetivo), y a lotcalifica a un verbo (funciona como adverbio):
a lot of + sustantivo verbo+ a lot
He reads a lot of books. He reads a lot.
(l) lee muchos libros. (l) lee mucho.

05 Cmo expresar poca cantidad de algo
Las expresiones a little(un poco) y a few(unos pocos) se utilizan de la misma manera que las palabras muchymany. La expresin a littlese utiliza con sustantivos incontables:
a little + sustantivo incontable
food un poco de comida
a little time un poco de tiempo
money un poco de dinero
Sin embargo, la expresin a few(unos pocos) se utiliza con sustantivos contables:
a few + sustantivo contable
potatoes unas pocas patatas
a few minutes unos pocos minutos
Swiss francs unos pocos francos suizos
Tanto a littlecomo a fewse utilizan sobre todo en frases afirmativas:
Ive got a little food. Tengo un poco de comida. Hes got a fewMexican pesos. (l) tiene unos pocos pesos mexicanos.
Fjese en la palabra only, que se utiliza para dar mas nfasis:
Ive onlygot a little time. Tengo slo un poco de tiempo.
Hes onlygot a few US dollars. (l) tiene slo unos pocos dlares americanos.
Y tambin se puede utilizar a little ya fewpara responder de forma abreviada sin sustantivo:
~Have you got any wine? ~Tienes un poco de vino?

06 Tenemos bastante?
Ya se ha visto enoughcon el significado de suficientemente despus de un adjetivo en frases como las que
estn a continuacin. Recuerde que en ingls enoughsiempre sigue al adjetivo al que modifica:
adjetivo+ enough
Is this jar of coffee big enough? Es este tarro de caf lo bastante grande? He isnt old enough. (l) no tiene edad suficiente.
The rope isnt strong enough. La cuerda no es suficientemente fuerte.
Tambin enoughse utiliza para referirse a cantidades de algo y en este caso siempre precede al sustantivo (tanto
contable en plural como incontable) al que modifica:
enough +sustantivo
We havent got enough time. No tenemos bastante tiempo.
Did he have enough socks? Tena (l) bastantes calcetines?
I had enough foodfor a week. Tena suficiente comida para una semana.
La palabra more(ms) se utiliza para expresar una mayor cantidad de algo y siempre precede a un sustantivo.
Se refiere tanto a sustantivos incontables como contables en plural:
more + sustantivo
I have to buy more milkand eggs. Tengo que comprar ms leche y huevos.
We dont need more sugar. No necesitamos ms azcar.
Would you like more potatoes? Querras ms patatas?
07 Demasiado de alguna cosa
Recuerde cmo se utiliza la palabra tooseguido por un adjetivo con el significado de demasiado:
too + adjetivo
That coat looks toobig for you. Ese abrigo parece demasiado grande para ti.
It isnt toocold to go swimming. No hace demasiado fro para ir a nadar.
Are those shoes toosmall? Son esos zapatos demasiado pequeos?

Tambin se utiliza la palabra toocon muchy manydelante de sustantivos con el mismo significado:

She had too many cats. (Ella) tena demasiados gatos.

Las construcciones toomuchy too manypueden utilizarse sin sustantivo siempre que quede claro
a qu se refieren:
~I want some apples, please. ~Quiero algunas manzanas, por favor.
~Will five apples be enough? ~Ser suficiente con cinco manzanas?
~No. Thats too many. ~No. Eso es demasiado.
~They need some milk. ~Necesitan algo de leche.

08 Cmo expresar pesos y volmenes
Recuerde que se utilizan las palabras somey anypara referirse a cantidades indefinidas o imprecisas de
sustantivos contables e incontables:
I want somesugar. Quiero algo de azcar.
She hasnt got anybiscuits. (Ella) no tiene galletas.
Do they want anymilk? Quieren algo de leche?
Para ser ms preciso, se puede decir cunto se quiere de algo en peso o en volumen:
a kilo un kilo a litre un litro
half a kilo medio kilo half a litre medio litro
En Gran Bretaa todava se utilizan sistemas de peso y volumen que no se basan en el sistema mtrico decimal.
(En Estados Unidos se utilizan sistemas similares pero con ciertas diferencias):

los contenga, como por ejemplo pedir una botella de/dos paquetes de algo, etc. stos son algunos de los
recipientes ms tpicos:

Recuerde que, al igual que las medidas de peso y volumen, se utiliza la palabra ofdespus del recipiente y
