Who and What is ASL• ASL was purchased by Halma Plc in March 2013 a FTSI 250 company (Market Cap £3.5Bn /

$5Bn).

• ASL has been trading 24 years.

• ASL specialises in M2M technology. We have developed products and services for the Utilities sectors such as Electricity, Solar and Wind Turbines for generation of power, plus other areas such as Electronic Vehicle Charging Points (EV) with specialities such as an extended Location Based Service (LBS) technology.

• ASL through its “Back Office and Server Solution” platform streams data, displays by way of a Web – GUI and offers “store and forward” to hosted “File Transfer Servers” – FTP to its customer base.

• ASL has developed a unique piece of server software know at “ASL Telemetry Protocol” – (ATP) that communicates with the firmware of its GSM product range allowing access to certain unique feature to underpin good GPRS connectivity over the GSM network.

• ASL is in the process of finalising an OEM cellular module set to support 2G, 3G, 4G & LTE plus subsets of LTE that will include the “SMARTS” that ASL has developed over the years. This module set will deliver the ultimate customer experience in terms of connectivity over the GSM or CDMA network, features UDP transfer, dynamic switching across networks and controlling SIM behaviour, see next slide for topology.

ASL - operate two modes of GPRS connectivity over the GSM network – “Open System” by the use of a Radius Server and a “Bespoke Approach” by utilizing a bespoke piece of server software written by ASL know as “ASL Telemetry Protocol” (ATP) that communicates with ASL firmware in its product set of GSM products.

Advantages of using ATP:-

• Communicate over the air by using UDP protocol – not TCP/IP. Reason - lite protocol and gets priority over the GPRS network where bandwidth is limited.

• Context up all the time (controlled by “keep alives”).

• “Near Real Time Data” can be achieved due to Context being up all the time. opens up a wider market.

• “Dynamic Switching” across networks is a must when using network resilient SIM’s.

• SIM Behavior – a must for good control over GSM networks.

Communicating by designLow Power Radio Solutionsthat can “back haul” through the GSM network by

means of GPRS connectivity.


• Low Power Radio Solutions:-

1. SigFox (Narrow Band Spectrum use – Low Power Radio – 868MHz in Europe, 915MHz in USA), connect via SigFox own cloud network – “Arqiva” chosen partner in GB. Can use the GSM network as the WAN gateway by means of GPRS connectivity.

2. LoRa (Wide Band Spectrum use – Low Power – can use multiple frequencies, normally – 868MHz -) – can build your own network (multiple NODS). Can use the GSM network as the WAN gateway by means of GPRS connectivity.

3. Zigbee – (Mesh Technology – Low Power Radio 2.4GHz & 868MHz) currently used as the low power technology for domestic Smart Metering. Can use the GSM network as the WAN gateway by means of GPRS connectivity.

NOTE: Other technologies can be used for connected devices such as WiFi and with the emerging subsets of Long Term Evolution (LTE) over the next few years GSM will HOST via the use of GPRS many connected devices.
