Mateo 20:17 - 2817 Cuando Jesús iba subiendo a Jerusalén, tomó aparte a los doce discípulos, y por el camino les dijo:

18 He aquí, subimos a Jerusalén, y el Hijo del Hombre será entregado a los principales sacerdotes y escribas, y le condenarán a muerte;

19 y le entregarán a los gentiles para burlarse de Él, azotarle y crucificarle, y al tercer día resucitará.

20 Entonces se le acercó la madre de los hijos de Zebedeo con sus hijos, postrándose ante Él y pidiéndole algo.

21 Y Él le dijo: ¿Qué deseas? Ella le dijo: Ordena que en tu reino estos dos hijos míos se sienten uno a tu derecha y el otro a tu izquierda.

22 Pero respondiendo Jesús, dijo: No sabéis lo que pedís. ¿Podéis beber la copa que yo voy a beber? Ellos le dijeron: Podemos.

23 Él les dijo: Mi copa ciertamente beberéis, pero sentarse a mi derecha y a mi izquierda no es mío el concederlo, sino que es para quienes ha sido preparado por mi Padre.

24 Al oír esto, los diez se indignaron contra los dos hermanos.

25 Pero Jesús, llamándolos junto a sí, dijo: Sabéis que los gobernantes de los gentiles se enseñorean de ellos, y que los grandes ejercen autoridad sobre ellos.

26 No ha de ser así entre vosotros, sino que el que quiera entre vosotros llegar a ser grande, será vuestro servidor,

27 y el que quiera entre vosotros ser el primero, será vuestro siervo;

28 así como el Hijo del Hombre no vino para ser servido, sino para servir y para dar su vida en rescate por muchos.

Matthew 20:17 - 2817 As Jesus was going up to Jerusalem, he took the twelve disciples aside by themselves, and said to them on the way,

18 “Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be handed over to the chief priests and the scribes, and they will condemn him to death,

19 and hand him over to the Gentiles to be mocked and scourged and crucified, and he will be raised on the third day.”

20 Then the mother of the sons of Zebedee approached him with her sons and did him homage, wishing to ask him for something.

21 He said to her, “What do you wish?” She answered him, “Command that these two sons of mine sit, one at your right and the other at your left, in your kingdom.”

22 Jesus said in reply, “You do not know what you are asking. Can you drink the cup that I am going to drink?” They said to him, “We can.”

23 He replied, “My cup you will indeed drink, but to sit at my right and at my left, is not mine to give but is for those for whom it has been prepared by my Father.”

24 When the ten heard this, they became indignant at the two brothers.

25 But Jesus summoned them and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and the great ones make their authority over them felt.

26 But it shall not be so among you. Rather, whoever wishes to be great among you shall be your servant;

27 whoever wishes to be first among you shall be your slave.

28 Just so, the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

To begin, let us remember that in Matthew 19:16 we have a story before the story we read today. It was about a rich young man who wanted to know what he had to do to have eternal life.

Para comenzar, recordemos que en Mateo 19:16 tiene una historia antes de la historia que leemos hoy. Se trata de un joven rico que quería saber qué tenía que hacer para tener la vida eterna.

When Jesus told him to keep the commandments, the young man replied that he had kept them since his youth. Jesus then looked at him with love (Mark 10:21). “You lack one thing: go, sell what you have, and give it to the poor… and then come follow me.” The young man’s face fell, and he went away sad, for he had many possessions.

Cuando Jesús le dijo que hay que guardar los mandamientos, el joven contesto que él los había guardado desde su juventud. Jesús entonces lo vio con amor (Marcos 10:21.) Le dijo: “Solo té falta una cosa: ve, vende lo que tienes, y daselo a los pobres, y entonces ven sígueme.” El rostro del joven cayo, y se fue triste, porque tenía muchas posesiones.

Then Peter asks: “What about us, who left everything and followed you? What then shall we have?”(Matthew 19:27-28). Jesus answered: “…in the new world, when the Son of man shall seat on his glorious throne, you who have followed me, will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.

Entonces Pedro le pregunta: “Y ¿qué de nosotros, que hemos dejado todo para seguirte?” En vista de eso, ¿Qué nos va a tocar?” (Mateo 19:27-29.) Jesús les dijo: “Yo les aseguro que cuando llegue el mundo nuevo y este Hombre se siente en su trono de gloria, también ustedes, los que me han seguido, se sentarán en doce tronos para juzgar a las doce tribus de Israel.

And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or land, for my sake, will receive a hundred-fold, and inherit eternal life.

Y todo aquel que por mí ha dejado casa, o hermanos, o hermanas, o padre o madre, o hijos o tierras, recibirá cien veces más y heredará vida eterna.”

James and John and their mother must have kept these words in mind. St. Chrysostom says they made their request because they thought that now was the time for crowns and rewards. They wanted the privilege of first seats and honors even before the contest had begun.

Santiago y Juan y su madre han de haber recordado estas palabras. San Crisóstomo dice que hicieron su petición porque pensaban que ésta era la hora para las coronas y premios. Querían el privilegio de los primeros asientos y honores hasta antes que se comenzara la lucha.

So Jesus told them: “You don’t know what you are asking for.” (Matthew 20:22.) They were thinking of an earthly kingdom. Jesus was talking about a heavenly kingdom.

Entonces Jesús les dijo: “No saben lo que piden” (Mateo 20:22.) Ellos estaban pensando de un reino terrenal. Jesús estaba pensando de reino celestial.

Chrysostom reminds us that now was the time for struggles, contests, toils, sweat, wrestling rings and battles. And that is what the three Passion predictions were all about. The Lord’s hour was close at hand. During Lent it is so appropriate to remind ourselves of these things. Suffering precedes glory.

Crisóstomo nos recuerda que ahora era el tiempo para esfuerzos, contiendas, trabajos, sudor, luchas y batallas. Y de eso se trataban las tres predicciones de la Pasión. La hora del Señor estaba cerca. Durante la Cuaresma es apropiado recordarnos de estas cosas. El sufrimiento precede la gloria.

Jesus proceeds to teach a lesson on discipleship. His answer: “It is not mine to grant” (Mattew 20:23). Our heavenly Father is going to settle all things righteously.

Jesús procedió a enseñarnos una lección en discipulado. Su respuesta: “No es mío concederlo (Mateo 20:23); será para los que mi Padre tiene designados.” Mi Padre celestial arreglará todo justamente.

Priority in the kingdom of Jesus is related to the witness of martyrdom. It could include death. That is what the Lord meant when he asked them: “Can you drink of my cup?” (Matthew 20.22). They answered: “We can.”

Prioridad en el reino de Jesús está relacionada al testimonio de martirio. Puede incluir la muerte. Eso es lo que el Señor quiso decir cuando pregunto: “¿Son capaces de pasar el trago que voy a pasar yo?” (Mateo 20.22.) Ellos contestaron: “Sí, lo somos.”

St. Ignatius Loyola in his Spiritual Exercises #93 elaborates this point. He says we must be ready to suffer the same fate as the Lord. The Lord says: “Be content with the same food, drink, and clothing as mine. Work with me by day, and watch with me by night…”

San Ignacio Loyola en sus Ejercicios Espirituales #93 elabora este punto. Dice que hay que estar listos para sufrir lo mismo que el Señor. El Señor (en su meditación) dice: “Hay que estar contentos con la misma comida, bebida, y ropa que la mía. Hay que trabajar conmigo de día, y velar conmigo de noche...”

As the good Lord has given us a share in the toil, so, afterwards, he will share his victory with us.

Como el Señor nos ha concedido el compartir en el trabajo, para después, compartir en su victoria.

St. Paul says we can serve others by exercising our gifts to the best of our ability. “In the Body of Christ, (1 Corinthians 12:28), God has appointed in the church first Apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then healers, helpers, administrators, and speakers of various kinds of tongues.”

San Pablo nos dice que podemos servir a otros ejercitando nuestros dones lo mejor que podamos. “En el Cuerpo de Cristo, (1 Corintios 12:28), Dios nos ha apuntado en la Iglesia primero Apóstoles, segundo profetas, tercero maestros, y luego sanadores, ayudadores, administradores, y los que hablan en toda clase de lenguas.”

Finally, Jesus gave his life as a ransom for many (1 Corinthians 12:28). A ransom suggests the idea that you can suffer for someone else. This in reparation of or in compensation for the sins of others. At Mass, the priest reminds us the words of Jesus:
