Juan 15:1 – 81 En aquel tiempo, Jesús dijo a sus discípulos: “Yo soy la verdadera vid y mi Padre es el viñador.

2 Al sarmiento que no da fruto en mí, él lo arranca, y al que da fruto lo poda para que de más fruto.

3 Ustedes ya están purificados por las palabras que les he dicho.

4 Permanezcan en mí y yo en ustedes. Como el sarmiento no puede dar fruto por sí mismo, si no permanece en la vid, así tampoco ustedes, si no permanecen en mí.

5 Yo soy la vid, ustedes los sarmientos; el que permanece en mí y yo en él, ese da fruto abundante, porque sin mí nada pueden hacer.

6 AI que no permanece en mí se le echa fuera, como al sarmiento, y se seca; luego lo recogen, lo arrojan al fuego y arde.

7 Si permanecen en mí y mis palabras permanecen en ustedes, pidan lo que quieran y se les concederá.

8 La gloria de mi Padre consiste en que den mucho fruto y se manifiesten así como discípulos míos”.

John 15:1 - 81 Jesus said to his disciples: “I am the true vine, and my Father is the vine grower.

2 He takes away every branch in me that does not bear fruit, and everyone that does he prunes so that it bears more fruit.

3 You are already pruned because of the word that I spoke to you.

4 Remain in me, as I remain in you. Just as a branch cannot bear fruit on its own unless it remains on the vine, so neither can you unless you remain in me.

5 I am the vine, you are the branches. Whoever remains in me and I in him will bear much fruit, because without me you can do nothing.

6 Anyone who does not remain in me will be thrown out like a branch and wither; people will gather them and throw them into a fire and they will be burned.

7 If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask for whatever you want and it will be done for you.

8 By this is my Father glorified, that you bear much fruit and become my disciples.”

Reflections on John 15:1 - 8 Reflexiones en Juan 15:1 - 8 by Fr. Sam Rosales, S.J. May 6, 2012 Using the beautiful image of the vine and the branches, Jesus has much to say to us about Who he is, and about Who his Father is, and about who we are. What a privilege to know that we are the branches of the true vine! With every privilege, there is a responsibility.

Usando la bellísima imagen de la viña y el viñador, Jesús tiene mucho que decirnos acerca de Quien es Él, Quien es su Padre, y quienes somos nosotros. Es un gran privilegio ser rama de la verdadera Viña. Y como con todo privilegio, hay ciertas responsabilidades.

There are different kinds of wine, coming from different vines from all over the world. Some vines produce better tasting wine than others. There are some vines that produce sour wild grapes. They look pretty, but a trained eye can distinguish the good from the bad. The bad ones have to be pulled out, it is like a weed. If you let them grow, they will take over the field, overwhelming the good vines.

Hay diferentes clases de vino, viniendo de diferentes viñas de todo el mundo. Unas viñas producen vino de mejor sabor que otra. Hay ciertas viñas que producen vino amargo. Se ven bonitas, pero uno que sabe distinguir las reconoce por lo que son. Esas malas viñas se tienen que sacar, como una hierba. Si las dejas crecer, toman posesión del campo entero, ahogando las buenas viñas.

Jesus said his Father is the vine grower. He knows where the best vine is located. It is in Jesus. He is the true vine. No one else is as good as He is. Anyone else who wants to play God is a false prophet, a liar, and a cheat. “All who came before me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them. I am the gate. Whoever enters through me will be saved, and will come in and go out and find pasture. A thief comes only to steal and slaughter and destroy; I came so that they might have life and have it more abundantly” (John 10:8-10).

Jesús dijo que su Padre es el viñador. Él sabe donde están las mejores viñas. La mejor viña es Jesús. Él es la verdadera viña. Nadie es tan bueno como Él. Cualquier otro que pretenda ser Dios es un falso profeta, un mentiroso, y chapucero. “Todos los que vinieron antes de mí, fueron unos ladrones y unos bandidos; pero las ovejas no les hicieron caso. Yo soy la puerta: el que por mí entre, se salvará. Será como una oveja que entra y sale y encuentra pastos. El ladrón viene solamente para robar, matar y destruir; pero yo he venido para que tengan vida, y para que la tengan en abundancia” (Juan 10:8-

10).

With Jesus we can produce good wine. “Without him we can do nothing” (John 15:5). The Father takes away a branch does not produce good fruit. And if it does bear good fruit, he prunes it, so that it will produce more and better fruit.

Con Jesús podemos producir vino bueno. “Sin Jesus, no podemos hacer nada” (Juan 15:5). El Padre remueve la rama que no produce buena fruta. Pero si la rama produce buen fruto, la poda, para que produzca mejor fruta.

The pruning is painful, but necessary. We also call it discipline. In Hebrews 12:5-6 the Lord says: “My son, do not regard lightly the discipline of the Lord, nor lose courage when you are punished by him. For the Lord disciplines whom he loves…” A disciple learns from his Master. In this case, it is Jesus. Listen to his words. “You are already pruned because of the word that I spoke to you” (John 15:3).

La podada es dolorosa, pero necesaria. También le llamamos disciplina. En Hebreos 12:5-6 el Señor dice: “Hijo mío, no menosprecies la disciplina del Señor, ni desmayes cuando eres reprendido por Él; porque el Señor al que ama, disciplina.” Un discípulo aprende de su Maestro. En este caso, es Jesús. Escucha sus palabras. “Ustedes ya están limpios por las palabras que les he dicho” (Juan 15:3).

If you are obedient to the word of the Lord, you will love him. “If you love me, keep my commandments” said the Lord. Cast out what is superfluous. Breaking the commandments is superfluous. All that superfluous stuff (sin) has to be thrown out of your life. If you don’t do it, sin will kill you.

Si eres obediente a la palabra de Dios, lo amaras. “Si me amas, guardas mis mandamientos” dice el Señor. Lanza fuera todo lo que es innecesario. Al seguir a Dios, quebrar los mandamientos es innecesario. Si no lo eches fuera el pecado de tu vida, te dará la muerte.

Cyril of Alexandria (Commentary on the Gospel of John 10.2) says: “If the branch hangs fruitlessly, so to speak, from the trunk of the vines, know that such a person will encounter the pruning knife of the husbandman. He will entirely cut it off and burn it as worthless rubbish. God uses the working power of the Spirit as a pruning hook.

Cirilio de Alejandría (Comentario cerca del Evangelio de Juan 10.2) dice: “Si la rama cuelga sin fruto, es decir, del tronco de la viña, sabe que tal persona encontrará la navaja podadera del viñador. La cortará enteramente y la quemará como basura que no vale nada. Dios usa el poder del Espirito como gancho de podadera.

God works with those who have chosen to live the best and most perfect life and do good works as far as they are able. God circumcises in them the pleasures that are always calling them to fleshly lusts and bodily passions.”

Dios trabaja con aquellos que han escogido vivir la mejor y más perfecta vida y hacer las buenas obras tanto cuanto pueden. Dios circuncide sus corazones en los placeres que siempre los llaman a lujuria de la carne y pasiones corporales.”

St. Augustine puts it in a beautiful way (Sermon 87.1). The church is the field. God is the tiller of the field. Toiling as a laborer in the field will merit you a reward. Yet we have to be careful not to take the credit. Always give glory to God. Praise God! “I planted, Apollo watered, but God gave the increase” (1 Corinthians 3:6-7).

San Agustín lo pone de otra manera bella (Sermón 87.1). La iglesia es el campo. Dios es el agricultor que cuida el terreno. Si trabajas como un obrero en el campo del Señor te ganarás un premio. Pero que no robe la gloria a Dios. No hay que tomar el crédito. Siempre hay que darle gloria a Dios. ¡Gloria a Dios! “Yo plante, Apolo regó, pero Dios dio el aumento” (1 Corintios 3:6-7).

“Our cultivation is that of adoration, not of plowing. His cultivating of us makes us better, it consists of getting rid of all the seeds of wickedness from our hearts, in opening our hearts to the plow, as it were, of his word, in sowing in us the seeds of his commandments, and in waiting for the fruits of godliness.” Will he find fruit in us when he comes?

“Nuestra cultivación es la de adoración y no la de echar el arado. Su cultivación de nosotros nos hace mejor, consiste en eliminar todas las semillas de la maldad de nuestros corazones, abriendo nuestros corazones al arado, es decir, a su palabra, al sembrar allí la semilla de los mandamientos, y al esperar los frutos de una vida vivida con Dios. ¿Encontrará fruto en nosotros Señor cuando venga?

Jesus says that if we remain in him, He will find fruit in us when he comes. We remain in Him by allowing him to love us and by loving him. For he loved the church, and gave himself for it” (Ephesians 5:26). The Apostle Paul adds, “that he might sanctify it, cleansing it with the washing of water by the word.” Augustine says (Tractate on the Gospel of John 80.3) that when the word is added to the water, you have the sacrament (of Baptism).

Jesús dice que si permanecemos en Él encontraremos fruto cuando Él venga. Permanecemos en Él al permitir que Él nos ame, y al amarlo a Él. Porque el Señor ama a la iglesia, y se entrego por ella (Efesios 5:26). El Apóstol San Pablo añade, (se entrego por ella) “...para santificarla, limpiándola por la lavada por el agua y por la palabra.” San Agustín dice (Tractato Acerca el Evangelio de Juan 80.3) que la palabra se añade al agua, y así tienes agua viva (lo que llamamos el sacramento del Bautismo).

“This has the power to cleanse even the tiny infant, although he is unable as yet with the heart to believe unto righteousness and to make confession with the mouth unto salvation.” More so will it cleanse the adults when they live their baptism, and pray, and love with their hearts, and believe, and make confession with their mouths (i.e., praise the Lord)! Say it, with your mouths! Let’s hear it again!

“Esto tiene el poder de limpiar hasta a un pequeño infante, aunque no sea capaz todavía de creer en su corazón hasta llegar a la santidad ni confesar con su boca hasta la salvación. Cuanto más limpiará a los adultos cuando vivan su bautismo, y oren, y amen en sus corazones, y crean que Jesús es el Mesías, y lo confiesen con sus bocas (es decir: ¡Gloria a Dios!) Una vez más, con sus bocas, ¡Gloria a Dios!

In conclusion, Jesus said he is the true vine, and wants us to remain in him. We quoted the Fathers of the Church to find practical applications. We remain in the Lord by living our Baptism. We live our Baptism by reading the word of God and putting it into practice. This includes getting rid of sin and praising the Lord always by good works. Let’s hear it again: “Praise the Lord!

En conclusión, Jesús nos dijo que él es la verdadera viña, y quiere que permanezcamos con él. Hemos citado los Padres de la Iglesia para encontrar aplicaciones practicas. Permanecemos en el Señor al vivir nuestro Bautismo. Vivimos nuestro Bautismo al leer la Palabra de Dios y al ponerla en practica en nuestras vidas. Esto incluye eliminando el pecado y alabando al Señor siempre con las buenas obras. Vamos a oírlo otra vez: “¡Gloria a Dios!”
