Applying and getting into college doesn’t have to be a stressful process. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you and your children navigate the college application process, which begins long before senior year!

The end is finally in sight! There are only a few more steps to take before those college acceptance letters start rolling in. Here’s what your children need to do:

• Complete all final A-G course requirements, including college-prep English and advanced math. Trigonometry or Analytic Geometry/Calculus are also recommended.

• If their CAASPP EAP result is “Standard Met,” they are conditionally ready for college-level English and/or math coursework. They are required to take an approved senior year-long English and/or math course and pass with a grade of “C” or better.

• If their CAASPP EAP result is “Standard Nearly Met” or “Standard Not Met,” they are not ready for college-level English and/or math coursework. Visit csusuccess.org for more information on EAP, including how to improve your English and math skills.

• Take the ACT or SAT one last time, if necessary.• Work on college essays and ask teachers for letters of recommendation.

Encourage your children to ask early and send a thank you note to those who write letters.

• Submit completed college applications. • Enjoy senior year! This is an exciting time for you and your children. Make

sure they make the most of it.

• Aim for As and Bs in all classes by focusing on homework and developing good study habits.

• Take the ACT EXPLORE exam, which helps students plan for high school and college.

Continue encouraging your children to excel academically. Ask your child about his/her career interests and make sure they prepare for the ACT or SAT. They can get the ACT and SAT out of the way early. Once your children have the score they want, you don’t have to think about it again!

• In the fall, register for the AP exams they will take in the spring. They can earn college credit for scoring well on the tests.

• Register for the PSAT exam if they didn’t take it their sophomore year.

• Take the SAT or ACT in the spring as an additional way to determine if they’re ready for college-level courses. Many CSU campuses require them to take the SAT/ACT by October of senior year.

• Keep up with grades and activities. Colleges pay close attention to what students are doing this year—it’s crucial that your children keep up with their homework and exams (including AP exams).

• Start researching and visiting colleges . Plan some day trips for the summer so your children can find schools where they’ll thrive.

• Reach out to a counselor or academic advisor at the first sign that your children are having trouble socially or academically.
