Greetings from the Hill and welcome to the eighth edition of Hillcat Baseball. 2012 will forever be remembered as one of greatestyears in the history of RSU baseball, culminating in the program’s first trip to the World Series and a National Runner-Up finish.

The Hillcats have gained national recognition in recent years and are now regarded as one of the premiere programs in small collegebaseball. The Diamond Cats have increased their season win total in six of the last seven years and enter the 2013 campaign rankedin the Top 5 nationally.

We are very proud of the team’s accomplishments and look forward to watching the Cats climb to even greater heights this spring. We are also very excited to unveil our newly renovated Diamond Sports Complex. Originally opened in 2007, the ballpark has under-gone over $1.5 million in renovations and new construction over the past two years. We are so thankful to have the opportunity toshowcase this first-class facility and look forward to hosting state, regional and national events for many years to come.

We appreciate your interest in our fledging athletic programs and hope you will join us at the ballpark on a regular basis this spring. The outpouring of communitysupport we’ve received has played a huge role in our early success and will remain vital to Hillcat Athletics as we strive to raise the bar once again in 2013. Thankyou for all you do in support of the Hillcats!

Ryan Bradley

Athletic DirectorRogers State University

Welcome to another exciting season of Hillcat baseball!

As Oklahoma’s fastest growing regional university during the past 10 years, RSU has enjoyed dynamic growth across itsentire enterprise, such as:

• Increasing its student population by 60 percent while still maintaining a personalized attention to service that’s become RSU’s hallmark;

• Adding new academic programs to meet the needs of Oklahoma’s business and industry;• Constructing two student apartment communities to provide the Tulsa metropolitan area’s only residential, public university;

• Expanding and remodeling academic facilities to provide students with up-to-date academic resources; and • Developing strong ties with the communities we serve in order to fulfill our mission of education and service.

RSU’s rapid growth also extends to our intercollegiate athletics, which are a relatively new addition after being reintroduced to campus in 2005. In onlya few short years, our Hillcat teams have become a vital component of the university’s DNA providing an infectious campus spirit and a strong connectionto the community. The university has invested in athletic facilities, including the new baseball/softball complex, Bushyhead Fieldhouse renovations, expansion and turf installation at Soldier Field and construction of soccer and cross country facilities on campus.

We appreciate our entire student body for their support of these campus initiatives, including the student fees that funded the recently completed $4million renovations of the soccer facilities and baseball/softball complex. Their support signals a strong vote of confidence in our athletic programs, butalso represents their investment in the quality of life at Rogers State.

As the RSU begins its first year as a NCAA Division II candidate, this season marks our last as a member of the Sooner Athletic Conference (SAC) andthe National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). We have appreciated the high priority these two organizations have placed on promotinghealthy values, developing strong character traits, and encouraging academic achievement among all student-athletes. These are core values for RSU’sprograms, and we work daily to impress them upon our student-athletes.

We appreciate your interest in RSU athletics, and we look forward to another great season on the diamond. Go Hillcats!

Rogers State University: A Great Oklahoma Higher Education Success StoryRogers State University holds a historic position in the annals of Oklahoma higher education.

Since RSU was accredited as a four-year university in 2000, enrollment has increased by more than 75 percent, earningRSU the title of Oklahoma's fastest-growing regional university

A dynamic, progressive university with more than 4,600 students, RSU is widely recognized for its high-quality academicprograms, distance learning options and high-technology learning environment. RSU is the only public four-year, residen-tial university in the Tulsa metropolitan area.

RSU offers a wide variety of bachelor's and associate degrees. Innovative new bachelor's degrees include applied technol-ogy, environmental conservation, military history, sport management and game development.

Many students from northeast Oklahoma who plan to attend medical school complete their undergraduate studiesthrough RSU's program in medical/molecular biology. And RSU enjoys a statewide reputation for academic excellence inits nursing program.

Distinguished Academic Achievements RSU received continued accreditation from the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Collegesand Schools without further required evaluation for 10 years - a rarity in higher education in Oklahoma and a majoraccomplishment achieved by few universities. This is truly a testament to the high academic quality of RSU.

RSU participates in The Washington Center Internship Program, a nationally recognized program placing students with pri-vate, public, and nonprofit organizations in Washington, D.C. Students participating in the semester-long internship earncollege credit while they gain "real world" experience within their field of interest and interact with influential leaders andpolicymakers. RSU is one of only three universities in Oklahoma to participate in this prestigious program.

Most RSU faculty members hold doctoral degrees or thehighest degrees available in their fields from esteemed insti-tutions across the nation, including Princeton University,Duke University and the University of Oklahoma.

The university’s Honors Program provides an atmospherewhere scholars can challenge themselves academicallyto maximize their college experience through specializedcourses, student/faculty joint research projects, and astrong emphasis on service learning in the community.

The President's Leadership Class (PLC), a four-year schol-arship program that fosters personal and professionaldevelopment, was designed for RSU students who havedemonstrated leadership abilities.

RSU also offers study abroad programs in Italy and Walesthrough the University's Studies-at-Large Program. Theinternational study programs provide students withopportunities to see the world, learn about other cul-tures, and enrich their educational experience.

Growth in Learning Facilities The Centennial Center, which opened in 2009, hasbecome the centerpiece of the main campus inClaremore. This two-level, 50,000-square-foot facilitycombines student development programs under oneroof, serves as a central location for students to study andsocialize and provides a focal point for the RSU campusin Claremore. The facility also offers ballrooms, confer-ence centers, and meeting rooms for the community.

A major expansion and renovation of Baird Hall on theClaremore campus was completed in 2010. The newBaird Hall has doubled in size and contains many of theleading-edge features associated with higher learningtoday, including classrooms equipped with SmartBoards, a performance studio, an art gallery and an out-door classroom for learning outdoors on sunny days.

RSU opened in September 2011 a new student apartmentcommunity that doubles the number of students living onthe main campus in Claremore. The $11.5 million projectaccommodates up to 255 students in a three-level facility, located across the street from the present university apart-ments. The new 87,118-square-foot complex is locatedjust west of Soldier Field.

Stratton Taylor Library, which opened in 2004, featuresdistinguished collections, wireless Internet, study areas, reading rooms, computer stations and classrooms.

A Brief History of RSURSU was founded in 1909 as Eastern University Preparatory School in Claremore. The school prepared the daughters andsons of area residents to attend college. Historic Preparatory Hall, known for its iconic gold dome, was the first buildingon the school's campus.

However, the school closed only a few years after it opened. Taking its place was the storied Oklahoma Military Academy(OMA), which operated on the Hill from 1919 to 1971.

Known as the “West Point of the Southwest,” OMA has an extensive register of graduates who became great leaders, bothin military and civilian life. More than 2,500 OMA graduates served in the Armed Forces of the United States during WorldWar II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. More than 100 graduates gave their lives in service to their country.

In 1971, OMA closed and Claremore Junior College opened on the Hill, serving more than 400 students. The junior col-lege grew rapidly in the 1970s, and by the time it was renamed Rogers State College in 1982, the institution boasted avariety of associate degree programs, distance learning capabilities, a new radio and television station and intercollegiateathletics.

In 1999, the Oklahoma Legislature renamed the institution Rogers State University and charged it with seeking accredita-tion as a four-year university. Accreditation at the baccalaureate level was granted in 2000.

Today, RSU is one of Oklahoma's fastest-growing universities, offering a wide variety of bachelor's degree programs tomore than 4,600 students on campuses in Claremore, Bartlesville, Pryor and online.

Academic DevelopmentThe Rogers State University Student-Athlete Academic Development (SAAD) program is designed to support Hillcat ath-letes as they strive for success in the classroom and reach their educational and career goals. The program provides aca-demic support such as advisement, subject tutors, and learning groups for each RSU student-athlete.

Study sessions are designed specifically for each athletic program, and student-athletes are given the opportunity to workwith tutors trained in their particular area of academic study. The goal of the SAAD program is to help all athletes growinto responsible adults as they become upperclassmen and take initiative to be personally responsible for their educationand their future.

The Student-Athlete Academic Development program, led by Dr. Brian Andrews, is there every step of the way for all ath-letes, to ensure they are pursuing a degree that will support their personal goals and prepare them for life after college.

Hillcat LIFE ProgramsThe Hillcat LIFE programs are designed to promote student-athletes’ success off the field or court. Each year, RSU intro-duces a variety of programs to enrich the college experience of its student-athletes, helping them avoid potential pitfallsand giving them information useful when making important life decisions. The following are some examples of Hillcat LIFEprograms:

Etiquette training: Student-athletes are instructed on proper dining habits, dating manners and courtesies. Each athleteis given a demonstration on the proper etiquette at formal meals.

Drug and Alcohol Counseling: Student-athletes are made aware of the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse. They are givenexamples of athletes with promising futures who failed to reach their potential due to drug/alcohol abuse.

“It Seemed Like a Good Idea at the Time…” Seminar: This presentation attempts to enlighten student-athletes aboutthe existing legal realities associated with various acts they likely deem benign and provokes introspection that will leadto more careful decision making.

Dangers of Gambling: Student-athletes are warned about the dangers of gambling addictions and also are warnedagainst gambling on collegiate athletics, which is a violation of NAIA and NCAA rules.

RSU athletics continues to expand its programs in order to provide a well-rounded education for all Hillcat athletes.

Champions of CharacterThe National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Champions of Character program isdesigned to instill an understanding of character values in sport, and provide practical tools for stu-dent-athletes, coaches and parents to use in modeling exemplary character traits.

Launched by the NAIA in 2000, the Champions of Character program addresses character issuesmore comprehensively than any other national program for youth. The program currently reacheshundreds of thousands of students on nearly 300 college and university campuses in NorthAmerica and extends into their surrounding communities.

The NAIA has been informally teaching character development through athletics for decades. The core values of respect, responsibility, integrity, servant leadership and sportsmanship are addressed comprehensively in the Champions ofCharacter program.

The NAIA Champions of Character program is an educational outreach initiative that emphasizes the tenets of characterand integrity, not only for NAIA college students, but for younger students, coaches and parents in our communities.

Coaches, parents, administrators and community partners all have a role in developing students of character. The NAIAChampions of Character program brings them training, guidelines and behavior models to create positive environmentsthat promote personal growth and fun sport activity.

“I have always dreamed of being a doctor, where I can help people and make a dierence in their lives. RSU is giving me the chance to earn a bachelor’s degree that is perfect for pursuing medical school, while I can be active with campus organizations. rough RSU, I was able to get a summer internship with Grand River Dam Authority that gave me valuable real-world experience. It all adds up to make RSU the university I always wanted to attend.”

2013 Baseball Season OutlookCatcherWith the graduation of everyday catcher Lance Rymel, behind the dish might be the place where RSU has themost question marks.

“The catcher position is the biggest hole we have to fillon our roster this season,” Bradley said. “I look for us togo with a two-catcher system which is what we have

done in the past; last year was an exception withLance Rymel being the quarterback of our club.We have two kids coming back who saw lim-ited time. (Emmanuel) De La Cruz had moreat-bats than (McKenzie) Mathews but I thinkthey will split time early.”

Emmanuel De La Cruz played in 35 gameslast season, starting 25 times, primarily asthe designated hitter. He tallied 14 hits withsix home runs. McKenzie Mathews playedin 16 games last season and made sixstarts. He had a .278 batting average and aperfect fielding percentage.

Coach Bradley added Ramcy Lora to the rosterat semester. The Boston, Mass. native is a playerwho could make contributions at catcher, first

base and the designated hitter position.

“We did bring in a catcher at semester,” Bradley said.“Ramcy has proven he can provide quality depth andbefore the season is over I think he could be in the mix.”

First BaseCody Campbell returns for his third and final season onthe Hill. The senior from St. Cloud, Fla. was the Hillcats’everyday first baseman and started in all 63 games heplayed in a season ago. He finished the year with 96 RBI,14 doubles and six home runs.

“Cody Campbell is definitely penciled in as our everydaystarter this season,” Bradley said. “We are looking for himto be a RBI guy, hitting in the five-hole. His offensive yearwasn’t as good as it was his sophomore season but hehad some big at-bats down the stretch in the postseasonthat really contributed to our success. He is a clutch hit-ter and I am looking for him to have an outstanding sen-ior season for us.”

Ramcy Lora will back Campbell when he needs a day off.

In 2012, the Hillcats reached the NAIA World Series forthe first time in program history while becoming the firstRSU athletics team to compete in the championshipgame. With a 49-16 record and a No. 2 finish in the post-season poll, the Diamond Cats registered their best fin-ish to date. Although the Hillcats made a magical runthrough the World Series in 2012, the 24 returners and12 newcomers would like a second chance at the cham-pionship game in 2013.

The Diamond Cats return six starting position players andfour starting pitchers from last year’s club, includingWorld Series Gold Glove winner Eric Baker along withstandout pitchers Shawn Spainhoward andBrandon Bargas.

Coach Bradley has compiled a talentedgroup of newcomers to complementthe veterans and believes the teamhas shown it is capable of big thingsin 2013.

“We’ve got a quality club comingback,” Bradley said. “The differencewill be how many close games we canwin. Looking back on last season, welost several close games in extrainnings that decided the series. Ourkids had a lot of resilience andwon several close games downthe stretch to put us in the WorldSeries. It’s going to come downto getting that big hit or that bigout. “

all-conference and named to the All-Region IITournament Team.

“Replacing our left side of the infield with the graduationof Cade McKewon and Randy Ramirez was a big hole tofill,” Bradley said. “Senior Tyler Wheeler is our penciled ineveryday third baseman. He hits from the left side and Ilook for him to step in and contribute offensively whiledoing an adequate job defensively.”

Sophomore Jean-Francois Dumais-Fyfe could also seetime in the hot corner.

OutfieldA trio of veterans return to the outfield for the Hillcats.Senior Eric Baker burst onto the scene in 2012, earning aSooner Athletic Conference Gold Glove and the WorldSeries Gold Glove. The Fort Gibson, Okla. native startedin all 65 games last year and locked down the startingjob in centerfield after leading the team in several offen-sive categories in 2012. As the leadoff hitter, he set thesingle-season record for hits (95), doubles (19), triples(6), at bats (239) and total bases (138) last season.

“Eric Baker had an all-American year from his Gold Glovein the World Series to leading our team in hitting,”Bradley said. “He is an all-around player. His leadership, passion for the game and experience will be somethingwe will rely on, especially in tight games. He is a differ-ence maker. With his speed and experience he will carrythe outfield with his gap-to-gap coverage.”

Colton Campbell will return for his senior season in leftfield after starting in all 65 games last season. He earneda conference Gold Glove, led the team in home runs (7)and drove in a team-leading 59 runs.

2013 Baseball Season Outlook

Second BaseHector Rivera returns for his senior season after a solidyear in 2012. The Manati, Puerto Rico native played in all65 games last season, starting all but one contest. Amainstay at second base, Rivera finished second on theteam in batting average (.353) and hits (79). He tallied13 doubles, two triples and a pair of homeruns.

“Hector definitely established himself as a quality secondbaseman last season,” Bradley said. “He was also goodoffensively, which was a pleasant surprise. He brings in alot of leadership and experience to our club.”

Sophomore Blake Heston and junior Nick Malter will alsovie for time at second base. Heston played in 30 gamesas a true freshman while Malter redshirted with theHillcats in 2012.

ShortstopCoach Bradley will look to Seminole State College trans-fer Jose Olazagasti to replace two-year starter RandyRamirez at shortstop. Olazagasti was a two-time GoldGlove award winner and was named to the NJCAA All-Region II team twice. Redshirt freshman Johan Ochoaand redshirt junior Hamilton Hernandez could also seetime at shortstop.

“Jose brings the experience we need at shortstop,”Bradley said. “He is penciled in as our starting shortstop.”

Third baseNewcomer Tyler Wheeler transferred to the Hill after oneyear at Cumberland University (Tenn.). Prior to his timeat Cumberland, Wheeler played two seasons at ConnorsState (Okla.) under head coach Perry Keith. At Connorshe earned a gold glove at third base, he was first team

2013 Baseball Season Outlook

“Colton Campbell had a great year in left field a seasonago; defensively he had an outstanding year,” Bradleysaid. “He is a lot better defensively than you would think;he is a big kid that runs well. He is a hard worker and Ilook for him to have another great year offensively forus.”

Senior Keith Poverud was RSU’s everyday starter in rightfield last season but after an injury sidelined him formuch of the fall, the position was opened to some com-petition.

“Keith is penciled in as our everyday right fielder,”Bradley said. “Other guys in the mix are Blake Hestonand Alex Cochran, who had really great preseasons.Whoever gets hot will play in right field. The versatilitywill help with matchups and we will be able to modifythe lineup to our strengths.”

PitchingOn the mound is where the Hillcats return the mostexperience and will serve as strength for the 2013 team.RSU returns seven hurlers from a season ago, includingall three weekend starters who combined for 27 wins.Coach Bradley is expecting big things from the veteranpitchers who are paired with a talented group of new-comers.

“Our pitching coach, Robert Brown, has been with mesince we started the program and he does not get therecognition he deserves,” Bradley said. “I think a team isonly as good as the players and staff and he has been atrue key to our success. I really appreciated the job hehas done for our program.”

Starters“You are only as good as your pitching,” Bradley said. “Ifyou want to win a championship you have to have qual-ity pitching. Fortunately, we have a quality pitching staff.Looking back on last year, that was the difference in ourball club.”

Senior left-handed pitcher Shawn Spainhoward com-piled an 11-2 record in 106 innings pitched with a 2.72ERA for RSU last season. His 11 wins and 106 inningspitched were both RSU single-season records.

“Shawn Spainhoward carried most of the bulk inningwise on our pitching staff, starting most of the nine-inning games,” Bradley said. “We look for him to be thesame guy he was last season, every time he goes to themound we know we are going to get a quality start.”

2013 Baseball Season Outlook

u In his first season on the Hill, Eric Baker set the single-season record in hits, doubles, triples, at-bats and total bases.

Brandon Bargas, a southpaw from Owasso, Okla, talliedseven wins with a single-season record 114 strikeouts. He tossed 95.1 innings but his most memorable appear-ance came in the second round of the NAIA World Serieswhere he helped the Cats upset No. 1 LSU-Shreveport,striking out a RSU single-game record 18 hitters in thecomplete game performance.

“Brandon Bargas has the flash,” Bradley said. “He lightsup the radar gun and is a strike out guy. His performanceon the mound against LSUS at the World Series was thebest I have ever seen and maybe the best I will ever see.Brandon is a competitor. Every time we go out we knowthose two lefties (Bargas/Spainhoward) are going to giveus a chance to win.”

Senior Kyle Duncan rounds out the trio of weekendstarters. The right-handed pitcher tallied an 8-2 recordlast season with 83 innings of work.

“The biggest surprise of the year might have been KyleDuncan, giving us quality starts every time he when outfrom the right side,” Bradley said. “He has worked hardin the preseason and I look for him to pick up rightwhere he left off. He gives us three quality starters andnow we are going to a four-game conference series wewill need a fourth starter. We were able to sign two qual-ity pitchers over the summer that will have a chance tomake a big impact on our club.”

The Hillcats picked up a pair of pitchers who will vie forthe fourth starting role during conference play. Jesus DelRosario, a senior left-handed pitcher who transferredfrom Azusa Pacific, and Jesse Baird, a junior right-hand-ed pitcher from the University of Arkansas-Little Rock, will look to step into the No. 4 starter role.

RelieversThe Hillcats will have a variety of pitchers in the bullpen, including a host of lefties. South paw Casey Cassityreturns for his fourth and final year on the Hill. The sen-ior from Barnsdall, Okla. could start midweek and comeout of the bullpen on the weekend.

“Casey Cassity had some big starts and relief efforts forus last year,” Bradley said. “He has a mind for the game;he is a leader on our pitching staff and a great student. He can come out of the bullpen or start.”

Hailing from Broken Arrow, Okla., sophomores T.J. Lawand Mason Marquette could become crucial relief pitch-ers for the Hillcats.

“TJ Law is knocking on the door to become a key differ-ence maker out of the bullpen,” Bradley said. “He had agood fall and he has matured over the last two years.Mason Marquette is one of those guys with the mindsethe can get anyone out. That is the type of approach youwant in a relief pitcher.”

Junior Kyle Deaton and freshman Zach Tyson could willcompete for time as well.

ClosersThe closer might be the place where RSU has the mostquestion marks.

“Coach Brown and I have discussed the closer role a lotand I feel like it is going to be determined as we gothrough the season. Consistency will be the key andhopefully someone will step forward and take control ofthat opportunity. Two young pitchers who could developinto the role are Shawn Patton and Colton Weeks.”Patton and Weeks, both left-handed pitchers, redshirtedlast season with the Hillcats.

Those midweek games aregoing to be important.”

RSU will face three schools from the NCAA Division IIHeartland Conference which the Hillcats will be joiningnext season. The Diamond Cats will also take onNortheastern Oklahoma State at ONEOK Field in Tulsa,Okla. for the second consecutive season on April 16th.

Fight SongHillcats of RSUStanding tall in Red and BlueWe will prevailWe refuse to failBecause our spirit's greatWe wear our colors proudlyOn our way to victoryGo Rogers State!!!

Lyrics by Yvonne PaceMusic by Clarence Woods/arr. Weller

Alma MaterRise above the Claremore valley Camelot to view,Stands our gracious alma materThrusting t’ward the blue.

Lift the chorus, speed it onwardFor the Red and Blue,Hail to thee our alma materHail to R-S-U!

Fear the ClawNot long after Hillcat men’s and women’s basketball wasintroduced at RSU, the home court at the ClaremoreExpo Center quickly gained a reputation as a formidablevenue for opponents.

As a member of the Hillcat team aligns himself or herselfon the free throw line, the crowd at the Expo Centerextends one arm skyward and makes the sign of the clawwith their fists.

If the shot falls successfully, arms descend in the mannerof the scratch of a ferocious wild cat.

As members of an opposing team prepare to shoot a freethrow, the rowdy RSU student section has been knownto intimidate the shooter. Depending on the shooter’sfortitude, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t!

Homecoming WeekThe university celebrated the first-ever Homecoming dur-ing the first week of November 2007, during the firstHillcat men’s and women’s basketball games.

At RSU, Homecoming is a campus-wide tradition.

A bonfire is typically held the night before the big gamesin the open area west of the University Village B studentapartments.

A campus office decoration competition is held duringHomecoming Week, in which students and staff mem-bers compete to show their Hillcat pride.

The Hillcat Hacker Invitational is a fun-filled golf eventplayed amidst the hazards of Rogers State University’sscenic Claremore campus. The game features specialnondestructive golf balls and is designed for pros, ama-teurs and hackers alike. The goal of this event is to gen-erate camaraderie among the university’s friends andalumni, showcase RSU’s beautiful and historic campusand establish an outstanding Hillcat Homecoming tradi-tion.

The Slam Dunk Contest and 3-point Shootout hasbecome a yearly tradition held on the Thursday ofHomecoming Week. The Homecoming Tailgate Party, held outside of the Claremore Expo Center, is one of themost popular Homecoming events for students, alumni, and the community.
