Nuestra naturaleza —la intemperie cósmica de la Pampa y los Andes—, comparada con
la europea, tan saturada de historia, tan humanizada por el arte y las empresas de los
hombres, es sin duda, a-histórica. Pero cualquiera sea la actitud en que nos coloquemos
frente a ella —ya la científico-natural con vistas a su dominio técnico, o la
contemplativa del arte, o la que la encara como una realidad vinculada, por el esfuerzo,
a la obra del hombre y su experiencia—, pensamos que su a-historicidad es sólo relativa
en comparación con aquel punto de referencia.
La naturaleza en nuestro ámbito es, pues, relativamente a-histórica, es decir, atendiendo
a su escasa o mínima densidad demográfica, ya que hace mucho comenzó para nosotros
el proceso de transformación del espacio geográfico en medio histórico, o sea en tiempo
de nuestro mundo histórico-espiritual. Ciertamente, es tan dilatado en escenario en que
transcurre la vida de los argentinos, que frecuentemente no es fácil —y no sólo para eleuropeo— percibir la estructura existencial de nuestra convivencia y la relación —de
lucha y penetración— en que estamos con esta naturaleza nuestra, tan rígida e
imponente. A esto se agrega como ya lo hemos hecho notar en otro lugar, que al hombre
argentino, por su modalidad ontológica, "no siempre le es dable, sin esfuerzo, centrarse
en su peculiar existencia y desde esta establecer y señorear un
