Question: Why Does the Church Have Different Litur-
gical Cycles?
While most Catholics know that the Church Year is di-
vided into various seasons (e.g. Advent, Christmas, Ordi-
nary Time, etc.), many are unaware that the one Church
Year is not like the one that follows. While the main sea-
sons and feasts are the same from year to year, the 3-year
cycle for Sundays and the 2-year cycle for weekdays
means that, as a general rule, the readings in the Lection-
ary that we hear at Mass will change from year to year,
helping us to have a richer encounter with Sacred Scrip-
ture. Each new cycle begins with the beginning of the li-
turgical year, the First Sunday of Advent.
The reasoning behind this innovation is outlined in Sacro-
sanctum Concilium, the “Dogmatic Constitution on the
Sacred Liturgy” of the Second Vatican Council: “The
treasures of the bible are to be opened up more lavishly, so
that richer fare may be provided for the faithful at the table
of God's word. In this way a more representative portion of
the holy scriptures will be read to the people in the course
of a prescribed number of years” (no. 51). This was fully
achieved in 1969 when the new cycles of readings were
approved by Pope Saint Paul VI. To learn more about the

Question: Por qué la Iglesia tiene Diferentes Ciclos Liturgicos ?
Mientras que la mayoría de los Catolicos sabenque la el año
de la Iglesia se divide en varias temporadas (ej. Adviento,
Navidad, Tiempo Ordinario, etc.), muchos no saben que el
Año de la Iglesia no es igual al que seguimos. Las estacio-
nes principales y las fiestas son las mismas año con año, los
3 ciclos Dominicales y los 2 ciclos para diario significa que,
igual que una regla general, las lecturas en el leccionario que
escuchamos en Misa cambian de año a año, ayudándonos a
tener un encuentro mas rico con las Sagradas Escrituras.
Cada nuevo ciclo empieza con el comienzo del año litúrgi-
co, el Primer Domingo de Adviento.
El razonamiento detrás de esta inovación esta marcada en el
Concilium Sacrosanctum, la “Constitucion Dogmatica sobre
la Liturgia Sagrada” del Concilio Vaticano Dos: “Los teso-
ros de la biblia consisten en estar abiertos mas abundante-
mente, de tal manera que el costo estará a cargo de los fiels
en la Mesa de la palabra de Dios. En esta manera, una parte
mas representativa de las Sagradas Escrituras seran leidas a
la gente en el curso de un numero de años preescritos” (no.
51). Esto fue completamente logrado en 1969 cuando los
nuevos ciclos de las lecturas fueron aprobada por el Papa

We look forward to welcoming your child into the life of the
Church. It is required for parents to attend two preparation
classes before having their child baptized. Please call the
Parish Center to register for classes prior to the birth of your
child. When choosing godparents, please keep in mind that
godparents are required to be practicing Catholics who have
received the sacraments of Baptism, the Eucharist, and
Confirmation and are at least 16 years of age.
WEDDINGS: Arrangements are to be made six months in advance
with one of the priests.
RECONCILIATION (CONFESSION): Saturdays, 4:00 to 4:45 p.m.
in the Church, or anytime by appointment.
ANOINTING OF THE SICK: Call the Parish Center immediately
in case of emergency, or to schedule a visitation for the
homebound or for the hospitalized.
NEW PARISHIONERS: Registration in parish required for
Baptism, Religious Ed. Classes, etc. Please stop by our Parish
Office between 9 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.
HOMEBOUND, NURSING HOMES AND HOSPITAL VISITS:
