UN DESTINO COMPARTIDO
Desde aquel inolvidable 4 de mayo de 2010, día en el que abrió oficialmente sus puertas, ante la pre-sencia de SS.MM. los Reyes de España, el Centro de la Universidad de Washington en el vetusto y señorial Pa-lacio del Conde Luna, más de quinientos estudiantes han pasado por sus aulas en alguno de los siete pro-gramas que anualmente se imparten. Un camino que, aunque no exento de dificultades, ha estado jalonado de historias de encuentro entre dos ciuda-des, separadas por más de 8.000 kilometros pero emo-cionalmente unidas por un ilusionante proyecto com-partido que, en su quinto aniversario, constituye ya una gozosa y espléndida realidad que mira al futuro con renovada ilusión.
Since that cherished May 4, 2010, the day the Univer-sity of Washington Study Center opened its doors, in the presence of their Royal Highnesses the King and Queen of Spain, in the an-cient and noble Palacio del Conde Luna, more than five hundred students have stu-died in its classrooms in one of the seven programs held here every year. It is a road that has been punctuated, though not without occa-sional difficulties, by tales of the meeting of two cities, separated by more than 5000 miles but emotionally united by the excitement of a shared project that, on its fifth anniversary, is already a joyous and splendid reali-ty looking to the future with renewed enthusiasm.

CINCO AÑOS DE LA UNIVERSIDAD DE WASHINGTON EN EL PALACIO CONDE LUNA
Llegaron en tropel, con la alegría de las buenas noticias. Encontraron entre los muros de piedra de León una segunda casa. Fueron cómplices de los anocheceres en el Húmedo de la melancolía de la catedral del silencioso sol de las montañas. Aquí se enamoraron, aquí fueronperegrinos de luz tras las palabras.
Caminos de ida y vuelta que murmuran, amistad contra el mar, llovizna tenue. En Seattle las mañanas se desperezan como saxofones. Bosques secretos que susurran astros, hijos de los hijos del azar y las fronteras. Música, botas, sabor a arenque, verde esperanza, enamorados verdes.
Cinco años de romance noroeste con noroeste morcilla y smoked salmon amor and friendship. Cheers! A tu salud, amigo. Bienvenido.

UW-LEÓN: UN DESTINO COMPARTIDO
El Centro de Estudios de la Universidad de Washington en León es un sueño hecho realidad: el segundo campus de la Universidad de Washington en Europa, después de Roma, con su sede en un impresionante palacio real, en una ciudad preciosa e histórica. Un sueño construido sobre la visión y el trabajo denodado de un número de personas fundamentales, entre ellos Ana Mari Cauce, actualmente presidenta in-terina de la Universidad de Washington, y Luis Fernando Esteban, Cónsul Honorario de España en el noroeste del Pacífico.
¿Por qué León? La Universidad de Salamanca es la más antigua de España. La Complutense y la Autónoma de Madrid son más conocidas. Hemos tenido un programa en curso desde hace muchos años en Cádiz. Entonces, ¿por qué León? Porque León nos abrió sus puertas. Nuestra presencia en León es el fruto de una visita de una delegación de Castilla y León a Seattle en 2006. Representantes gubernamentales, tanto regionales como locales, re-presentantes de las universidades, miembros de la comunidad empresarial y la prensa pasaron casi una semana en Seattle, contactando con diferentes sectores en el Estado de Washington y ofreciendo oportunidades a sus homólogos estadounidenses.
Entre ellos se encontraban Ángel Penas, Rector de la Universidad de León, Antonio Alonso, Director de la Fundación Universidad de León (FGULEM), y Francisco Fernán-dez, alcalde de León. El departamento de Español y Portugués de la Universidad de Washington organizó su primer programa en el Centro de Idiomas, con 14 estudian-tes, en la primavera de 2006. Continuamos llevando estudiantes a León en sucesivos programas de primavera durante varios años, impresionados con el alto nivel de en-señanza y calidad de vida en León.
¿Cómo creció el Centro en León de la Universidad de Washington a partir de un pe-queño programa del Departamento de Español hasta lo que es hoy? Tiene sus oríge-nes en el año 2008 en un almuerzo entre Ana Mari Cauce, entonces recién nombrada Decana de Artes y Ciencias, Luis Fernando Esteban, y yo, en ese momento Jefe del Departamento de Español y Portugués. Era la primera vez que Ana Mari y Fernando se encontraron, y en el curso de nuestra conversación, dijo, “Lo que realmente me gustaría es un centro de estudios en España“. Estas palabras se convirtieron en nues-tra tarea, y el resto es historia.

Después de sopesar varias posibles sedes, en varias visitas a León, la oficina del al-calde nos ofreció el uso de la torre renacentista del histórico Palacio de los Condes de Luna, restaurado y modernizado con suma delicadeza. El 4 de mayo 2010 el Rey Juan Carlos I y la Reina Sofía inauguraron oficialmente la sede, en presencia de re-presentantes gubernamentales y universidades estatales de ambos países. Un grupo de indios Makah de la Península Olímpica de Washington bendijeron en su idioma la sede. Y así empezó todo.
Hoy celebramos nuestros primeros cinco años en el Palacio. Hemos crecido de 32 estudiantes en 2010 a más de 160 en 2014, y en total más de 500 estudiantes de la Universidad de Washington han tenido el privilegio de estudiar en el Pala-cio de los Condes de Luna. Quince departamentos académicos diferentes de la Universidad de Washington han organizado y dirigido programas en León, inclui-dos los Departamentos de Inglés, MATESOL, Español, Estudios Helénicos, Estu-dios Internacionales, el Programa de Honores, y las Escuelas de Arte, Derecho, Negocios, Aeronáutica, Enfermería y Comunicaciones, por nombrar sólo algunos. La mayoría de nuestros estudiantes viven con familias locales que les proporcio-nan una visión privilegiada de la vida y la cultura local. Exploran la ciudad, tanto de día como de noche, y aprenden que el Barrio Húmedo no se denomina así por la lluvia. Realizan excursiones a otras ciudades y regiones y aprenden sobre la rica y legendaria historia de León y sus alrededores. Nuestro objetivo es la integración lingüística y cultural.
Parte de nuestro compromiso, a cambio de la tremenda generosidad y hospitali-dad que nos ofrece León, es ser un recurso cultural y académico para la ciudad y la región. Con este fin, muchos de nuestros estudiantes son voluntarios como au-xiliares de conversación en las clases de inglés en colegios locales, una experien-cia mutuamente enriquecedora para todos los involucrados. Curt Labitzke director de “Arte en León“, programa exposiciones de su programa y vende obras de arte de los alumnos al final de cada programa, donando las ganancias a organizacio-nes benéficas locales. Los estudiantes MATESOL de Sandy Silberstein han ense-ñado Inglés en el Centro de Idiomas ULE durante varios veranos. Greg Hicks de la Facultad de Derecho de la Universidad de Washington co-dirigió un curso so-bre la ley de recursos naturales con la profesora Ana Belén Casares de la Univer-

sidad de León, reuniendo por primera vez a estudiantes de ambas universidades en la misma clase. Anna Witte, profesora de estudiantes de español en un progra-ma de cuentacuentos trabajó con escolares locales en el arte de contar historias. Los estudiantes de Ingeniería Aeronáutica y Enfermería de la Universidad de León han tenido la oportunidad de estudiar en Seattle, y ambas instituciones están traba-jando hacia dobles grados en varias disciplinas.
Me siento especialmente orgulloso de las exposiciones de arte que hemos desa-rrollado en la sala de exposiciones Luis Fernando Esteban en la planta baja de la torre del Palacio, incluyendo el arte de los niños de la Guerra Civil Española, una exposición de fotografías de inmigrantes españoles a Nueva York, el arte tradicional de la nación india Makah, y la obra del artista mexicano Alfredo Arreguín, residen-te durante mucho tiempo en Seattle. Miles de personas visitan estas exposiciones y salen con un mayor sentido sobre la riqueza y diversidad de la cultura americana.
Tuve la gran fortuna de estudiar en la Universidad de Madrid durante mi primer año en la universidad, y fue una experiencia que me transformó. Esa es la razón por la que hago lo que hago hoy. Durante muchos años, desde entonces he dirigido numerosos programas en España y América Latina, con la esperanza de ofrecer a mis alumnos la misma oportunidad que tuve. He visto a generaciones de estudiantes que crecen y cambian como resultado de su inmersión en un idioma y una cultura diferentes. Den-tro de veinte años es posible que no recuerden cómo conjugar el pluscuamperfecto de subjuntivo de caber (aunque espero que lo harán), pero lo que nunca olvidarán es la belleza de León, la amabilidad y la generosidad de su gente, ni lo que han aprendi-do acerca de sí mismos y de su país a través de su experiencia en esta ciudad.

UN SALUDO DEL CÓNSUL HONORARIO DE ESPAÑA EN SEATTLE
Quiero aprovechar la oportunidad de esta conmemoración para agradecer a todas las personas e instituciones de la ciudad de León que han ayudado durante estos cin-co años desde su apertura a que este Centro, que fue creado gracias a la colaboración y visión del Ayuntamiento de León, la Universidad de León y la Universidad de Was-hington, se haya convertido en un centro modelo de educación en España. Todas las previsiones que teníamos en su inauguración se han quedado cortas y ya podemos ver que el Centro ha cambiado la vida a muchos jóvenes a los que se les ha dado la oportunidad de vivir una experiencia única en una ciudad única y se les han abierto unos horizontes globales necesarios para su vida profesional en el siglo XXI.
Con todo mi agradecimiento a todos los que han hecho que el sueño que tuvimos unos pocos hace cinco años se haya convertido en realidad.

V ANIVERSARIO DE LA UNIVERSIDAD DE WASHINGTON EN LEÓN
Cumplir años siempre es motivo de celebración, por eso los leoneses debemos con-memorar y destacar como merece la ocasión el hecho de que la Universidad de Was-hington, con sede en Seattle, escogiera hace cinco años la ciudad de León para ubicar su segunda sede en Europa, después de la de Roma.
El resultado no ha podido ser mejor, en este tiempo más de 500 alumnos america-nos han pasado por nuestra ciudad, además de un buen número de profesores y de patrocinadores privados de esta universidad, lo que en la práctica supone una impa-gable manera de promocionar nuestra ciudad en el Estado de Washington, al tiempo que se convierte en una oportunidad única para los alumnos de la Universidad de León, que también tienen la ocasión de mejorar su formación a través de las dobles titulaciones que se han establecido entre ambas universidades. Sin olvidarnos de que en estos cinco años ya hay empresarios leoneses que han asentado sus negocios en esta zona de Estados Unidos.
El Ayuntamiento de León mantiene en vigor un convenio con la Universidad de Washin-gton, por el que se cede el uso de parte del histórico Palacio del Conde Luna, que espe-remos siempre sea la sede de esta prestigiosa institución académica norteamericana, porque ello significará que la colaboración sigue vigente debido al éxito del acuerdo.
En un mundo globalizado es conveniente darse a conocer, mostrar los potenciales históricos, patrimoniales, turísticos, empresariales o económicos, y la Universidad de Washington nos está ayudando a los leoneses a ser conocidos en un territorio tecno-lógico, industrial y cultural de primera magnitud a nivel mundial.
Felicidades a todos los que han hecho posible esta historia de amistad y oportunida-des de futuro entre Seattle y León. Y que cumplamos muchos más años de entendi-miento y compromisos.

EN EL QUINTO ANIVERSARIO DEL CENTRO DE LA UNIVERSIDAD DE WASHINGTON EN LEÓN
En nombre de la comunidad universitaria leonesa me es muy grato redactar estas líneas con ocasión del quinto aniversario de la apertura del Centro de la Universidad de Washington en León. Al echar la vista atrás se ve el gran camino recorrido: una empresa que nació con la ilusión de representar una alternativa formativa de la UW en el ámbito internacional, en concreto en la ciudad de León –España, se ha consoli-dado en poco tiempo como un referente de actividad docente y cultural en nuestra ciudad. Y lo ha hecho armonizando su oferta académica con la colaboración con las instituciones locales. La Universidad de León aprovecha esta ocasión que nos brin-da este venturoso aniversario para expresar su voluntad de fortalecer las iniciativas conjuntas existentes y las que surgirán, sin duda, en el futuro con el objetivo claro de ofrecer a los estudiantes una oferta académica atractiva, capaz de afrontar los retos de un mundo globalizado.

Cuando viajé a León hace muchos años, acompañando a mi madre en un viaje a su patria natal en Galicia, no podía haber imaginado que varias décadas después sería el hogar del segundo campus de la Universidad de Washington en Europa.
El sueño de un centro de estudios de la Universidad de Washington en España surgió de una conversación entre el Cónsul Honorario español, Luis Fernando Esteban, y el catedrático de español Anthony Geist. A continuación hubo varias visitas a León, que hicieron que la belleza de la ciudad y la región, y su rico patrimonio cultural, fueran evidentes para mí. Una visita de vuelta del Rector de la Universidad de León y el alcal-de de León produjeron un convenio formal entre las tres instituciones.
En mayo de 2010 el Rey Juan Carlos I y la Reina Sofía inauguraron nuestro centro de estudios en el histórico Palacio del Conde Luna, y una delegación de los nativos ame-ricanos de la nación Makah conmemoraron el acontecimiento con una bendición en una ceremonia tradicional. Desde entonces más de 500 estudiantes y profesores de la Universidad de Washington han tenido el privilegio de estudiar en este entorno único. La realidad del Palacio del Conde Luna ha superado nuestras mejores expec-tativas, y esperamos una relación continua con la ciudad de León y la Universi-dad de León, en beneficio mutuo de todas las partes, durante muchos más años.

UN SUEÑO HECHO REALIDAD
De todas las aventuras que he emprendido en el ámbito educativo la más enriquece-dora ha sido sin duda la colaboración con la Universidad de Washington. El 4 de mayo de 2010 se hace realidad el sueño de, una vez más, acercar el continente americano y europeo.
En esa fecha la Universidad de Washington comienza en el Palacio de los Condes de Luna su andadura, un camino lleno de adjetivos, verbos, sustantivos o preposiciones en lengua española, pero no solo, sino también un peregrinaje por la cultura y las tradiciones de España.
Para mi, lo realmente maravilloso ha sido observar cómo más de 500 estudiantes y profesores han contribuido a crear un melting pot en León. Tengo que agradecer a todas las instituciones que han contribuido a celebrar este quinto cumpleaños: Ayun-tamiento de León, Universidad de León, FGULEM y Universidad de Washington, pero sobre todo a los cientos de estudiantes que decidieron recorrer los 8.222 kilómetros que separan Seattle de León a lo largo de estos cinco años.

El Centro de la Universidad de Washington en León y España ha demostrado ser un sitio maravilloso para la investigación y la enseñanza sobre la legislación de los re-cursos naturales y la política. He conducido seminarios de exploración basados en el Centro de León que se centraron en la justicia y la política de aguas y en la gestión y conservación de los regímenes de paisajes forestales y sus recursos, incluidas las especies animales en peligro de extinción. La fuerza de mis colegas españoles, las posibilidades de un compromiso profundo por parte de los estudiantes de la UW en proyectos de igual a igual con los estudiantes universitarios españoles, y las ricas posibilidades del paisaje físico y cultural de España han sido esenciales para nuestro trabajo y para nuestra capacidad de crear programas fuertes y emocionantes de es-tudio. La Unión Europea como una nueva fuente de normas y prácticas en España ha añadido un elemento transnacional emocionante para nuestra enseñanza y la inves-tigación. Nuevas posibilidades continúan surgiendo.

En los últimos años he tenido la oportunidad de dirigir tres programas en el Centro de la Universidad de Washington en León con la Facultad de Bellas Artes y he llegado a conocer a mucha gente acogedora y amable.
Siempre es un placer ver cómo se iluminan los ojos de los estudiantes cuando entran en el Centro de la Universidad de Washington en León por primera vez. El Palacio, con su larga historia y su arquitectura impresionante, es un verdadero regalo a la Univer-sidad y la comunidad local. Somos afortunados al disponer de un hermoso espacio al que podemos llamar nuestro hogar y tener acceso a la plantilla que siempre hace nuestra estancia agradable y productiva.
Nuestro grupo también tiene la oportunidad de utilizar los estudios de grabado y fo-tografía en la Escuela de Bellas Artes en sus proyectos de arte en estudio. Trabajamos codo con codo con estudiantes locales, profesores y artistas que comparten sus ideas sobre el arte, los viajes y la cultura.

Cada vez que vuelvo la vista atrás y considero la suerte, el honor, la consciencia del placer de enseñar y el enriquecimiento personal que me ha brindado este programa, recuerdo el tremendo entusiasmo ante el reto planteado y el temblor de estómago ante el temor de no estar a la altura de las esperanzas y de la confianza que en mí pusieron las personas que me designaron para ayudar a los chicos a progresar en el idioma español.
No he olvidado, estoy segura, nada de lo vivido en estos cinco años: caras, nombres, esperanzas y exigencias reflejadas en los ojos de mis estudiantes. Tampoco he olvi-dado la gran emoción que suscitó entre todos nosotros, estudiantes y profesores, el día de la inauguración de este Palacio, tanta emoción, que algunos de los chicos quisieron honrar el evento comprándose un traje con el que ofrecer a las ilustres personas presentes, altos mandatarios de nuestros dos Estados, la mejor imagen de los estudiantes de la Universidad de Washington en Seattle.
Indudablemente, la presencia constante de estos estudiantes ha supuesto también para muchos leoneses una oportunidad de abrirse a otros mundos. La convivencia, esta convivencia, ha valido y sigue valiendo la pena.
Entre todos, sin duda, estamos construyendo un mundo más humano, mejor.

NO HE OLVIDADO NADA DE LO VIVIDO EN ESTOS CINCO AÑOS

LAS IMPRESIONES DE LEÓN EN UN ARTISTA
Mi esposa Susan y yo, en compañía de nuestros queridos amigos Lauro Flores y su esposa Christine, llegamos a León un 29 de junio. El viaje fue largo y cansado, pero mi cansancio se disipó tan pronto como llegamos. Estaba cumpliendo mi sueño de visitar la tierra de mis antepasados. Una de mis primeras impresiones fue al entrar en la Catedral, con sus magníficas vidrieras. Me recordaron mi fascinación infantil con las vidrieras de la catedral de Morelia, mi ciudad natal, que inspiraría mis pin-turas futuras. La inauguración oficial de la exposición fue una experiencia conmo-vedora. La cálida bienvenida por parte del Ayuntamiento de León y las autoridades de la Universidad de León, los amigos y los niños llenos de talento que participaron en el taller que impartí permanecerán siempre conmigo. Estoy muy agradecido por la oportunidad que se me concedió de compartir mi trabajo con la gente de León.

LAS IMPRESIONES DE LEÓN EN UN ARTISTA VOLVIENDO LA VISTA HACIA LEÓN
Mi estancia en León me abrió los ojos. Fue la primera vez en mi vida que experimen-té un lugar y una cultura diferente a la mía. La transición fue facilitada por mis pro-fesores en el Centro de la Universidad de Washington en León. Ellos me enseñaron con entusiasmo y vigor los fundamentos de la lengua española y los matices de su cultura. Algunos de mis momentos favoritos fueron cuando mi profesora Cristina, una mujer brillante, nos propuso que escribiésemos relatos y actividades de rol. Pudimos impregnarnos de las cosas que aprendimos al vivir con una familia de aco-gida, comer tapas y disfrutar de la animada y emocionante vida nocturna del Barrio Húmedo. Siempre recordaré con cariño mi estancia en león. Gracias por todas las experiencias maravillosas

UNA EXPERIENCIA INOLVIDABLE EN LEÓN
Fui a León durante el otoño de mi tercer año en la universidad de Washington. Vivía con una familia genial y sobretodo, mi queda en León fue inolvidable y magnífico. Conocí a mucha gente genial incluyendo Iñaki Gabilondo durante una entrevista que celebró el aniversario de radio en León y vi muchos lugares bonitos e intere-santes. Mi familia y mis profesores me enseñaban muchísimo. León es un lugar muy bonito con gente amable y divertida que me gusta mucho. Quiero visitar otra vez en el futuro y quiero decir gracias a todas las personas que añadieron a mi experiencia buenísima en León.

UNA EXPERIENCIA INOLVIDABLE EN LEÓN UN LUGAR HERMOSO CON PERSONAS MÁS HERMOSAS
Mi experiencia en León fue magnífica, y algo que nunca olvidaré. Realicé un progra-ma escolar con intenciones de mejorar mis conocimientos de español, pero mien-tras tanto descubrí un lugar hermoso con incluso personas más hermosas. Nos recibieron con los brazos abiertos y nos aceptaron en una cultura que terminamos sintiendo como nuestra, a pesar del hecho de que estábamos a miles de millas de distancia. Aprendí no sólo acerca de la maravillosa provincia española, sus tradi-ciones y su rica cultura, sino que aprendí que siempre voy a tener un lugar al que llamar mi segundo hogar: León.

ME QUEDO MUY FELIZ
Mi experiencia en León me demostró cómo es la vida española en una manera autentica. La cultura española está bien preservada en la ciudad, y la calidez de la gente me hizo la estancia maravillosa y cómoda. También me encantó que pudiera viajar a todos lados de España fácilmente, y explorar las regiones distintas en pocos días. Todavía pienso en caminar al lado de la catedral gigante, comer tapas, y echar una siesta cada día mientras vivir por allí. Debido a toda la arquitectura y los lugares bonitos, la gente amable, la comida rica y las noches llenas de fiesta, me quedo muy feliz que estudiaba en León.

ME QUEDO MUY FELIZ MI PRIMER VIAJE FUERA DE ESTADOS UNIDOS
Nunca olvidaré mi estancia en León. España fue el primer país al que viajé fuera de los EE.UU. y Canadá, y después de dos días frenéticos e intensos en Madrid me sentí reconfortado por una ciudad más pequeña, León. Desde el primer momento la gente fue amable y dispuesta a mostrar el camino hacia el Jardín de San Francisco donde está el Centro de Idiomas de la Universidad de León. Mi familia anfitriona fue maravillosa y me permitió comprender la vida familiar en la ciudad, además había un montón de oportunidades para conocer a fondo la vida de mis compañeros en el Barrio Húmedo y en los días soleados en el parque junto al río (cuyo nombre he olvidado). Las clases del Centro de Idiomas y en el Palacio del Conde Luna fueron la leche. Mis profesores y compañeros fueron todos maravillosos, gente de verdad que no sólo me enseñaron el idioma y las fechas importantes de la historia espa-ñola, sino que también me enseñaron las similitudes y diferencias más ocultas de las personas.

El Centro de la Universidad de Washington en León fue el punto culminante de mi formación. Aprendí más sobre el mundo en esas semanas y meses en el extranjero que en un aula. La experiencia fue magnífica. Todo, la ciudad, los profesores, las excursiones ... maravilloso. Esplendido cuidado en la planificación de todas las facetas de nuestra experiencia y por eso estoy muy agradecido. Yo sugeriría a todos los jóvenes ir al extranjero y ver el mundo. Si tienes la suerte de llegar a España - el país más hermoso en el mundo – comer chocolate con churros y agradecérselo a las estrellas. Esta experiencia te convertirá en quién realmente eres y la llevarás a todas partes.

Desde aquel inolvidable 4 de mayo de 2010, día en el que abrió oficialmente sus puertas, ante la pre-sencia de SS.MM. los Reyes de España, el Centro de la Universidad de Washington en el vetusto y señorial Pa-lacio del Conde Luna, más de quinientos estudiantes han pasado por sus aulas en alguno de los siete pro-gramas que anualmente se imparten. Un camino que, aunque no exento de dificultades, ha estado jalonado de historias de encuentro entre dos ciuda-des, separadas por más de 8.000 kilometros pero emo-cionalmente unidas por un ilusionante proyecto com-partido que, en su quinto aniversario, constituye ya una gozosa y espléndida realidad que mira al futuro con renovada ilusión.
Since that cherished May 4, 2010, the day the Univer-sity of Washington Study Center opened its doors, in the presence of their Royal Highnesses the King and Queen of Spain, in the an-cient and noble Palacio del Conde Luna, more than five hundred students have stu-died in its classrooms in one of the seven programs held here every year. It is a road that has been punctuated, though not without occa-sional difficulties, by tales of the meeting of two cities, separated by more than 5000 miles but emotionally united by the excitement of a shared project that, on its fifth anniversary, is already a joyous and splendid reali-ty looking to the future with renewed enthusiasm.

UW-LEÓN: A COMMON DESTINY
The UW Study Center in León is a dream come true: the second University of Washing-ton campus in Europe, after Rome, with its headquarters in a stunning royal palace in a beautiful, historic city. But it is a dream built on the vision and hard work of a number of individuals, key among them Ana Mari Cauce, currently Interim President of the UW, and Luis Fernando Esteban, Honorary Consul of Spain in the Pacific Northwest.
Why León? The University of Salamanca is the oldest in Spain. The Complutense and the Autónoma in Madrid are better known. We have had an ongoing program for many years in Cádiz. So why León? Because León opened its doors to us.
Our presence in León is the fruit of the visit of a delegation from Castilla y León to Sea-ttle in 2006. Government officials, both regional and local, university representatives, members of the business community, and the press spent nearly a week in Seattle, making contacts in their various sectors in Washington State and offering opportuni-ties to their US counterparts.
Among them were Ángel Penas, Rector of the University of León, Antonio Alonso, Director of the University of León Foundation (FGULEM), and Francisco Fernández, Mayor of León. At their invitation the Division of Spanish and Portuguese at the UW organized its first program at the Centro de Idiomas, with 14 students, in the spring of 2006. We continued to bring students to León in successive spring terms for several more years, and were very impressed with the high level of instruction and the quality of life in León.
How did the UW León Center grow out of a small Spanish Department program to what it is today? It has its origins in 2008 in a lunch between Ana Mari Cauce, then newly appointed Dean of Arts and Sciences, Luis Fernando Esteban, and myself, at that time Chair of Spanish and Portuguese. It was the first time Ana Mari and Fernan-do met, and in the course of our conversation she said, “What I would really like is a study center in Spain”. We took that as our marching orders, and the rest is history.
After looking at a number of different possible buildings, over a series of visits to León, the Mayor’s office offered us the use of the Renaissance tower of the historic

Palacio de los Condes de Luna, meticulously and beautifully restored and moder-nized. On May 4, 2010 King Juan Carlos I and Queen Sofía officially inaugurated the building, in the presence of state government and university officials from both countries. A group of Makah Indians from the Olympic Peninsula of Washington gave the building a traditional blessing in their language. And so it began.
Today we celebrate our first five years in the Palacio. We have grown from 32 stu-dents in 2010 to over 160 in 2014, and in total well over 500 UW students have had the privilege of studying in the Palacio de los Condes de Luna. Fifteen different academic units at the University of Washington have organized and led programs in León, including the Departments of English, MATESOL, Spanish, Hellenic Studies, International Studies, the Honors Program, and the Schools of Art, Law, Business, Aeronautics, Nursing and Communications, to name just a few.
Most of our students live with local host families which gives them an privileged view of local life and culture. They explore the city, both by day and night, and learn that the Barrio Húmedo does not take its name from the rain. They take field trips to other cities and regions and learn about the rich and storied history of León and the surrounding area. Our goal is linguistic and cultural integration.
Part of our commitment, in exchange for the tremendous generosity and hospita-lity offered to us by León, is to be a cultural and academic resource for the city and the region. To this end, many of our students volunteer as conversation assistants in English classes in local schools, a mutually enriching experience for all involved. Curt Labitzke’s “Art in León” program exhibits and sells the students’ artwork at the end of each program, donating the proceeds to local charities. Sandy Silberstein’s MATESOL students have taught English in the ULE Language Center for several summers. And Greg Hicks from the UW School of Law co-taught a course on natural resource law with ULE Professor Ana Belén Casares, which for the first time brou-ght together students from both universities in the same class. Lecturer of Spanish Anna Witte’s students in the storytelling program worked with local schoolchildren on the art of telling stories.

University of León students of Aeronautical Engineering and Nursing have had the opportunity to study in Seattle, and both institutions are working toward dual degrees in several disciplines.
I am particularly proud of the art exhibits we have produced in the Luis Fernando Esteban Exhibition Hall on the ground floor of the Palacio tower, including children’s art from the Spanish Civil War, a photo exhibit of Spanish immigrants to New York, traditional art of the Makah Indian nation, and the work of the Mexican artist Alfredo Arreguín, long time resident of Seattle. Thousands of people visit these exhibits and come away with a greater sense of the richness and diversity of American culture.
I had the great fortune to study at the University of Madrid during my junior year in college, and it was a transformative experience for me. That is the reason I do what I do today. In the many years since then I have led numerous programs to Spain and Latin America, hoping to offer my students the same opportunity I had. I have seen generations of students grow and change as a result of their immersion in a different language and culture. Twenty years from now they may not remember how to conju-gate the pluperfect subjunctive of caber (though I hope they will), but they will never forget the beauty of León and the kindness and generosity of its people, nor what they learned about themselves and their country through their experience in this city.
At the beginning of these remarks I said that the UW Study Center in León was a dream come true. It is. But even more important, it is a place that makes dreams come true for hundreds of students and faculty from Seattle and from León. I know it will continue to do so for the next five years and for many more to come.

I would like to take the occasion of this commemoration to thank all the people and institutions of the City of León that in the five years since its opening have helped make this Study Center, that was created thanks to the vision and collaboration of the Office of the Mayor of León, the University of León and the University of Washington, a model for education in Spain. The many expectations we had in its inauguration fell far short of what it has achieved, and we can now see that the UW Study Center has changed the lives of hundreds of young people who have had the opportunity to live a unique experience in a unique city, and has opened global horizons necessary for their professional lives in the 21st century.

An anniversary is always a cause for celebration, and for this reason the people of León commemorate and celebrate appropriately the fact that the University of Was-hington’s flagship campus in Seattle, five years ago chose the city of León to open its second campus in Europe, following Rome.
We could not have hoped for a better outcome, for in this time over 500 UW students have lived and studied in our city, as well as a number of faculty and donors, which in practice constitutes an incalculable way of promoting our city in Washington State, while at the same time creating a unique opportunity for University of León students, who have the opportunity to strengthen their education through the dual degrees that both institutions are developing. Not to mention the businesses from León that have begun operations in the Pacific Northwest.
The City of León has an Memorandum of Understanding with the University of Washin-gton that grants the use of part of the historic Palacio del Conde Luna, which we hope will always be the home of that prestigious American academic institution, for that will mean that the partnership continues due to the great success of the agreement.
In an increasing globalized world it is important for León to be known, to show its historical, touristic, business and economic potential, and the University of Washin-gton is helping the people of León be better known in a technological, industrial and cultural area of the first order on a worldwide scale.
Congratulations to all those who have made this history of friendship and opportuni-ties for the future between Seattle and León possible. And let us celebrate many more years of understanding and mutual commitment.

On behalf of the University of León community it is a great pleasure to write these words on the occasion of the fifth anniversary of the opening of the University of Was-hington Study Center in León. Looking back you can see the great distance we have come: an endeavor born of the dream of creating an different educational opportuni-ty for the University of Washington on an international scale, specifically in the city of León, Spain, has in a very short time become a reference for educational and cultural opportunities in our city. And it has done so by blending its academic mission with partnerships with local institutions. The University of León wants to take the occasion that this joyful anniversary to express its will to strengthen and deepen the current joint initiatives, and those that will no doubt arise in the future, with the unequivocal goal of offering students from both universities an unique opportunity and equip them to confront the challenges of a globalized world.

A DREAM COME TRUE
When I traveled through León many years ago, accompanying my mother on a jour-ney to her ancestral homeland in Galicia, I couldn‘t have imagined that several deca-des later it would be home to the second University of Washington campus in Europe.
The dream of a UW study center in Spain grew out of a conversation with the Spanish Honorary Consul, Luis Fernando Esteban, and professor of Spanish Anthony Geist. It was followed by several visits to León, which made the beauty of the city and region, and their rich cultural heritage, apparent to me. A return visit by the Rector of the University of León and the Mayor of León led to a formal agreement between all three institutions.
In May 2010 King Juan Carlos I and Queen Sofía inaugurated our study center in the historic Palacio del Conde Luna, and a delegation of Native Americans from the Makah Nation commemorated the occasion with a traditional blessing ceremony. Since then over 500 UW students and faculty have had the privilege of studying in this unique setting.
The reality of the Palacio del Conde Luna has exceeded our greatest expectations, and we look forward to an ongoing partnership with the City of León and the University of León, to the mutual benefit of all parties, for many years to come.

Of all the adventures I’ve undertaken in the world of education without doubt the most enriching has been working with the University of Washington. On May 4, 2010 the dream of bringing America and Europe closer together has once more become reality.
On that day the University of Washington set off on its route in the Palacio de los Con-des de Luna, a road filled with adjectives, verbs, nouns and prepositions in Spanish, and not that alone, but also a pilgrimage through the culture and traditions of Spain.
For me it has been truly wonderful to see how over 500 students and teachers have contributed to creating a melting pot in León. I must thank all the institutions that have contributed to the celebration of this fifth birthday: the City of León, the Univer-sity of León, FGULEM, and the University of Washington, but most of all the hundreds of students who decided to traverse the 5,097 miles that separate Seattle from León over these last five years.
And those that are yet to come.

The UW León Center and Spain have proved a wonderful site for research and tea-ching in natural resources law and policy. I have led Exploration Seminars based at the León Center focused on water justice and policy and on management and con-servation regimes for forest landscapes and their resources, including endangered animal species. The strength of my Spanish colleagues, the possibilities for deep en-gagement by UW students in peer-to-peer projects with Spanish university students, and the rich possibilities of the physical and cultural landscape of Spain have been es-sential to our work and to our ability to create strong and exciting programs of study. The European Union as a new source of norms and practices in Spain has added an exciting trans-national element to our teaching and research. New possibilities keep revealing themselves.

A BETTER WORLD THROUGH ART
Over the past few years I have had the opportunity to lead three quarter-long pro-grams at the UW Leon Center for the School of Art and have gotten to know many warm and friendly people.
It is always a treat to see the students eyes light up when they enter the Leon Center for the first time. The Palacio, with its long history and breathtaking architecture, is truly a gift to the University and the local community. We are fortunate to have such a beautiful space to call home and to have access to staff that always make our stay enjoyable as well as productive.
Our group also has the opportunity to use the printmaking and photography studios at the Escuela de Bellas Artes for their studio art projects. There they work side by side with local students, instructors and artists sharing their ideas about art, travel and culture.

When I look back and consider the good fortune, the privilege and the pleasure of teaching and the personal enrichment that this program has given me, I recall both my tremendous enthusiasm at the challenge and the knot in my stomach for fear of not being up to the hopes and confidence placed in me to help the students improve their knowledge of Spanish.
I’ve forgotten nothing, I’m certain, of those five years: faces, names, hopes and de-mands reflected in the eyes of my students. Nor have I forgotten the great emotion we all experienced, students and teachers alike, the day of the inauguration of this Palace. Some of the students were so moved that they bought new suits to show the best face of UW students to the authorities of both countries who were present at the event.
I know the ongoing presence of these students has also meant for many people of León an opening to other worlds. This living together has been and continues to be extremely valuable.

My wife Susan and I, in the company of our dear friends Lauro Flores and his wife Christine, arrived in León on June 29th. The trip was long and tiring, but my tired-ness dissipated as soon as we arrived. I was fulfilling my dream of visiting the land of my ancestors. One of my first impressions was entering the Cathedral, with its magnificent stained glass windows. They reminded me of my childhood fascination with the stained glass windows of the cathedral of Morelia, my city of birth, which would inspire my future paintings. The actual opening of the show was a moving experience for me. The warm welcome by city and university officials, friends, and the talented children that participated in the workshop I offered will always remain with me. I am extremely grateful for the opportunity I was afforded to share my work with the people of León.

AN ARTIST’S IMPRESSIONS OF LEÓN LOOKING BACK ON LEÓN
My time in León was eye opening. It was the first time in my life I had experienced a place and a culture different from my own. The transition was eased by my teachers at the León Center. They taught me with enthusiasm and vigor the basics of the Spa-nish language and the nuances of their culture. Some of my favorite moments were when my teacher Cristina, a brilliant women, would have us write stories and role plays. We were able to incorporate the things we learned living with a host family, eating tapas, and enjoying the lively and exhilarating night life of el barrio húmedo. I will always look back on my time in León with fondness. Thank you for all the won-derful experiences.

I’ll never forget my time in León. Spain was the first country I traveled to outside of the U.S. and Canada, and after a hectic and overwhelming two days in Madrid I was comforted by the smaller city of León. From the moment we first arrived the people were welcoming and happy to show us the way to El Jardín de San Francisco donde está el Centro de Idiomas de la Universidad de León. My host family were wonderful and allowed me insight into family life in the city, while there was plenty of oppor-tunity for insight into my peers’ lives en El Barrio Humedo and on sunny days in the park by the river (cuyo nombre olvidé). The UW Leon Center was the highlight of my education. I learned more about the world in those weeks and months abroad than I ever did in a classroom. The expe-rience was phenomenal.
Everything from the city, the instructors, the excursions.. Beautiful. Amazing care went into planning every facet of our experience and for that I am truly grateful.
I would suggest for every young person to go abroad and see the world. If you’re luc-ky enough to get to Spain--the most beautiful country in the world--have some chu-rros, some chocolate, and thank the stars. That experience will become woven into who you are and you’ll take it everywhere.
