Our foundation hopes also to reach out to those that accompany us in the worldwide adventure of living together, promoting, developing and cooperating on significant conservation plans for many of the world's most threatened species. For them we will continue to fight hard and defend our aim, "let's save the animals taking care of our planet".

I would like to introduce our new convention with AMAMEC for this new season 2015 in which around 35 women will benefit from our therapy program. Furthermore, we will soon give you more details on the "pink tide" that will paint our palm grove. Through this initiative we plan to offer a fun day together for all the women with breast cancer and their families, besides from raising funds for their association.

Here lays great part of the legacy those of us who had the pleasure to meet you inherited. You will forever be in

our hearts, "italian princess".

Una nueva publicación, una obligación que no podemos eludir, es el deber que tenemos con los que en algún momento decidisteis acompañarnos. Además nos encanta revivir momentos en la búsqueda de fotos y textos. Echar la vista atrás y ver todo lo que se ha avanzado. Un recuerdo muy sentido a nuestros héroes que nos han dejado y agradecerles que nuestro impulso diario se nutra con su recuerdo luchador.

Nuestra fundación también quiere llegar a aquellos compañeros de viaje que nos acompañan en la aventura diaria de convivir en nuestro planeta promo-viendo,desarrollando y cooperando en importantes planes de conservación de muchas de las especies animales más amenazadas del mundo. Por ellos y para ellos seguiremos luchando con fuerza para seguir y defender nuestro anhelo “salvemos los animales cuidando el planeta”.

Me gustaría adelantar el nuevo convenio con AMAMEC para esta temporada 2015 en el que unas 35 usuarias se beneficiarían de nuestros baños. Además os daremos más detalles pronto acerca de la nueva marea rosa que pintará nues-tro palmeral. Con esta iniciativa pretendemos ofrecer un día de respiro y convi-vencia para las mujeres afectadas de cáncer de mama y sus familiares, además de recaudar fondos para su gran labor como asociación.

¿Quiénes Somos? Somos una entidad sin ánimo de lucro queparte de la experiencia de 30 años del ParqueZoológico Río Safari y la Obra Social que vienedesarrollando y que tiene como principal línea de trabajo.

El desarrollo y aplicación de la Terapia Asistida con animales dirigida a distintos colectivos susceptibles de beneficiarse de su participa-ción en este tipo de intervenciones. Se constituye con carácter jurídico defundación en 2007.

Nuestra fundación nace de las inquietudessociales de un parque zoológico que se plan-tea de qué manera puede aportar un valor añadido a la sociedad que vaya más allá de la sensibilización y educación en materia medioambiental.

Surge entonces la posibilidad de desarrollar acciones en las que los animales se transfor-man en sujetos activos y herramientas válidaspara la intervención terapéutica con multitud de colectivos.

Who We Are? We are a non-profit entity with 30 years of experience with the Río Safari Zoo and the Social Work that it is carrying out and whose main line of work .Is the development and application of AnimalAssisted Therapy intended for collectives that can benefit from participating in this type of intervention. It becomes a foundation in 2007.

Our function originates as a result of a zoo’s social concern considering how it can provide added value to society that goes beyond environmental education and sensitisation.

Therefore the possibility arises to develop actions in which animals become active subjects and valid tools for therapeutic intervention with many collectives.

NUEVAS INSTALACIONES 2014

Como viene haciendo cada temporada durante los últimos años, Río Safari Elche inauguró esta pasada primavera 2014 una nueva instalación, construida expresamente para el alojamiento de orangutanes de Borneo.El orangután es un animal gravemente amenazado. Tanto es así que a día de hoy se prevé que en el curso de una década podría-mos verlo desaparecer en libertad.Existen dos especies de orangután, una es originaria de Sumatra y otra, de Borneo. Allí, en el sudeste asiático, los territorios de floresta han sufrido y sufren una gran merma, en favor de grandes industrias que trabajan la madera o que convierten las tierras en zonas de cultivo. Con la deforestación es destruido el hábitat natural del orangután, el único gran simio asiático. Los zoos trabajan en respuesta a esta situación mediante el desarrollo de programas de manejo prudente y reproducción de los orangutanes en cautividad, para mantener así una población estable y sana que pudiera en un futuro prosperar y ser reintrodu-cida en la naturaleza. Con la construcción de esta instalación, Río Safari Elche se ha unido a los esfuerzos de conservación de la especie a nivel zooló-gico europeo. Nakal y su hijo Banggi, los dos orangutanes de Borneo que ahora viven en Río Safari Elche, pertenecen a la Bornean Orangutan EEP, que es el programa europeo de manejo y estrategia conservacionista desarrollado exclusivamente para dicho animal. La isla construida en Río Safari Elche tiene unos 350m² de ampli-tud, si bien ha sido, en toda su extensión, también edificada y amueblada verticalmente, encerrando por ende un volumen de unos 2800m³ en total. La edificación vertical se ha conseguido con la introducción de decenas de troncos naturales de hasta ocho metros de altura, con plataformas y lianas intercaladas, con el fin de que los orangutanes puedan desarrollar sus hábitos de actividad naturales con total espontaneidad, ya que el orangu-tán es un animal esencialmente arbóreo, es decir, que pasa la mayor parte de su tiempo en altura. La singularidad de esta instalación, por añadidura, reside en que los recintos nocturnos son también una réplica de ese entorno naturalista. Estas estancias interiores, además, son visitables por el público, lo cual hace de esta instalación una única en España.

En un doble empeño, Río Safari Elche inauguró también en 2014 una segunda novedad: un espacio reservado para especies australianas. En él los visitantes pueden conocer a dos animales emblemáticos del continente, el emú y el ualabí. El emú, de hecho, aparece representado en la bandera australiana. En cuanto al ualabí, se trata de un nombre menos escuchado pero de un animal muy reconocible: es la versión pequeña del cangu-ro. Los canguros y los ualabíes pertenecen, dentro de la familia de los mamíferos marsupiales, a la subfamilia macropodidae, que significa ‘pies grandes’. La única diferencia entre unos y otros es el tamaño; las especies más grandes de macropódidos son llama-dos canguros, y las especies que no son lo suficientemente grandes para ser consideradas canguros reciben el nombre de ualabíes. En el nuevo Paseo Australiano de Río Safari Elche se puede ver a seis individuos de ualabíes de cuello rojo y aprender en qué consiste la fascinante configuración reproductora de un marsu-pial, en el cual las crías se desarrollan en una bolsa (marsupio) en el vientre de la madre. también es conocido como canguro enano.

Borneo’s Orangutan Sanctuary

As has been the trend for the last few years, Río Safari Elche opened this last spring of 2014 a new exhibit, built expressly for the housing of Bornean orangutans. The orangutan is a seriously endangered animal. So much that it is estimated that within one decade we could see orangutans disappear in the wild. There exist two orangutan species, one of them is native to the island of Sumatra, and the other one, to Borneo. There, in South East Asia, the forests have suffered and suffer to the day a big shrinkage in favor of big industries that work on the wood or turn the land into crops (for palm oil cultivation, for example). Defores-tation destroys the natural habitat of the orangutan, the only Asian great ape. In response to this situation zoos work on the development of programs of prudent management and reproduction of captive orangutans, in order to maintain a stable and healthy population that could eventually prosper and be reintroduced in the wild.With the construction of this exhibit, Río Safari Elche has joined European efforts for the conservation of the Bornean species. Nakal and his son Banggi, that now live in Río Safari Elche, belong to the Bornean Orangutan EEP, which is the European manage-ment program and conservationist strategy elaborated purposely for this species. The island constructed in Río Safari Elche is approximately 350m² wide, but it has also been built and furnished vertically, so therefo-re the total volume is around 2800m³. The vertical furniture consists of dozens of 8 meters high natural trunks, with platforms and vines in between, in order to provide opportunities for the development of the orangutan’s natural habits, for it is essentially an arboreal animal, that is, it spends most of its time on the trees. The singularity of this exhibit resides also on the fact that the indoor facilities are also a replica of this naturalistic environment and are open to the public as well, which makes it a unique exhibit in Spain..

.Australian Trail

Substantial effort was devoted this past year to open yet another exhibit, one that holds Australian species. In this location the visitors can see two emblematic species from that continent: the emu and the wallaby. The emu, in fact, appears represented on the Australian flag. As to the wallaby, it might be a less-heard-of name, but a very recognizable animal: it is the small version of the kangaroo. Kangaroos and wallabies belong, within the family of marsupial mammals, to the subfamily macropodidae, which means ‘big feet’. The difference between the two is the size; the larger species of macropods are called kangaroos, and the ones that are not large enough to be considered kangaroos receive the name of wallabies. In the new Australian Trail our visitors can see six red-necked walla-bies and learn about the fascinating reproductive configuration of marsupials, in which most of the baby’s development takes place in the mother’s pouch (marsupium).

El 19 de octubre recibimos en Río Safari Elche una visita muy especial. Los jóvenes de diferentes asocia-ciones de personas con discapacidad disfrutaron en el parque de una jornada muy agradable gracias a la iniciativa de la Obra Social La Caixa, que eligió nuestras instalaciones para celebrar el Día Mundial del Voluntariado. Realizaron un recorrido por el recinto, tuvieron la oportunidad de conocer de mano de los monitores del parque las instalaciones más novedosas y reali-zaron un taller relacionado con las labores y tareas de granja, en el cual pudieron interactuar con los animales más dóciles del parque. También practica-ron el oficio de jardinería con la ayuda del personal de La Caixa. La visita concluyó con un almuerzo. Más de 90 asistentes, entre personal, voluntarios de la entidad y miembros de dos asociaciones de discapacidad participaron en una jornada muy amena y didáctica.

Besides from touring the park, our guests had the opportunity to get up close to some of our animal residents on a workshop arranged specially for them at the zoo farm. El día 31 de mayo de 2014 en Río Safari Elche tuvimos el honor de recibir la visita de William Kikanae, jefe de la tribu keniata Maasai. La visita estaba enmarcada en la difusión del proyecto de colaboración entre la tribu del Maasai Mara con Pikolinos y ADCAM (Asociación de Desarrollo, Comercio Alternativo y Microcéditos). A través de este proyecto, las mujeres maasai fabrican las piezas artesana-les de decoración del calzado cuya venta gestiona la empresa ilicitana Pikolinos. Fruto de esta iniciativa ha sido, entre otras cosas, la construcción de una escuela para la tribu, donde hay 160 niños maasai escolarizados. Como nos expuso personalmente, William Kikanae contó desde muy joven con el apoyo de su tribu, que le consideraba un buen líder y un visionario. Él creyó desde siempre que los jóvenes maasai debían crecer educados, y que para ello las mujeres maasai necesitaban solvencia económica y con ello más poder de decisión, y desde luego necesita-ban una escuela, ya que entonces el colegio más cerca-no se encontraba a 20km, lo que suponía un trayecto largo y lleno de peligros para los niños. Tras su recorrido por el zoo, William se reunió en el aula educativa con un grupo de escolares bilingües en inglés. Éstos traían muchas preguntas preparadas de casa, que William contestó ampliamente, y ofreció además charlas sobre diversos aspectos de la cultura maasai. Siendo como es la Maasai una tribu en plena naturaleza africana, William naturalmente habló sobre cómo allí conviven con fauna salvaje, hacia la cual profesan un gran respeto. La visita del señor Kikanae fue, sin lugar a dudas, una de las experiencias más enriquecedoras que Río Safari Elche ha recibido en sus más de 30 años de historia, y por ello agra-decemos a Rosa Escandell, Directora de ADCAM, y al grupo Pikolinos, por pensar en nosotros para la transmisión de su gran proyecto, que cuenta con todo nuestro apoyo y admiración.

On May 31st 2014 we were honored to receive the visit from William Kikanae, current chief of the Maasai tribe, in Kenya. Mr Kikanae had been touring for the diffusion of a collaboration project between the Maasai Mara people, the Spanish brand Pikolinos, and ADCAM (Development, Alternative Trade and Microcredits Association). Through this project, maasai women make handcrafted decorative pieces for the Spanish manufacturer of shoes Pikolinos. As a result of this initiative a school has been built for the maasai people, with 160 children enrolled so far. As William explained to us, he counted since a very early age with the support of his tribe, which considered him a good leader and a visionary. He always had the belief that the young maasai should receive an education, and the women needed financial capacity which would mean a greater decision-making power. And most certainly a new school was needed, closer to his people, since in the past the nearest school was 20km away, which supposed too long a trip and a dangerous one for the children. Following the tour around the zoo, William met in our class-room with a group of school pupils who had prepared a series of questions. William answered every question thoroughly and also talked a bit further about the maasai culture, which involves values of cohabitation and respect for nature. Mr Kikanae’s visit was undoubtedly one of the most enriching visits we have had the pleasure to receive in Río Safari Elche’s 30 years of life, and for that we thank Rosa Escandell, ADCAM manager, and the Pikolinos group, for thinking of us for the transmission of their great project, that has our full support and admiration.

Desde su nacimiento en 2006, Fundación Río Safari Elche ha ido ampliando su ámbito de actuación, no sólo en el área de programas terapéuticos y proyectos de acción social, sino que su objetivo se ha extendido a colaborar en activida-des benéficas de entidades que solicitan su asistencia. Además de todo ello, FRSE ilusionados por tener su propio acto benéfico con el fin de acoger y ser un punto de encuentro a las familias, servir como evento para dar a conocer nuestra labor y aportar nuevas formas de fondos para ampliar proyectos, se organiza la I Jornada Benéfica de la Fundación, que gracias al esfuerzo, tesón y creatividad de su Presidenta Andrea Ibáñez, se hace realidad e instaura una jornada deportiva en familia donde la afluencia de público y repercusión mediática superó con creces las expectativas, enorgulleciéndonos por ello y agradeciendo en gran medida la contribución, trabajo y ayuda de todos los voluntarios asistentes, y como no al Excelentísimo Ayunta-miento de Santa Pola, al Gym Noray, a la escuela deportiva Mar Sport, a la Unión Excursionista de Elche, a Cicles Garma, Sprinter, judo Isabel Fernandez, Mustang, Club Náutico Santa Pola, Lanjarón, Universidad Miguel Hernandez, Club de Futbol Elche, Mondraker y Rio Safari Elche, que hicieron posible que dicho acto fuera un éxito.Este acto benéfico recibió el nombre de I Jornada deportiva familiar, llevándose a cabo en el nuevo Paseo Marítimo de Santa Pola el pasado 9 de marzo, con acceso libre a toda persona que quisiera visitarnos. Se organizaron 2 clases de spinning y 2 clases de zumba, para toda persona que hubie-ra adquirido su bolsa y camiseta deportiva. Para los más pequeños había una zona de actividad y recreo, donde se enseñaban bailes con los personajes de “La maga maja y sus bichitos” y juegos tradicionales. Además, se instauró una zona dedicada a deportes adaptados donde se daban a conocer, y todo interesado podía participar. A todo esto, se unía las mesas de punto de información de entidades como Fundación Síndrome -5p, la recogida de tapones para Jorge, información de los gimnasios colaboradores del evento y como no, de Fundación Río Safari Elche. Como colofón para finalizar el evento se sortearon varios premios, entre ellos una bicicleta Mondraker de un alto valor econó-mico, y se pudo disfrutar de la actuación de Rap Star y su tema “Un rayo de esperanza”.

Por otro lado, el pasado 18 de octubre del presente año, y en colaboración con Fundación Pascual Ros de Mustang, Juan Perán Pikolinos y la Sociedad Gastronómica Com Deu, se organizó la fiesta Benéfica Tex Mex, donde desde las 12:00 los asistentes podían disfrutar de un buffet libre con todo el sabor y ambiente mejicano, acompañado de rancheras, actividades y talleres para los asistentes y niños, como el toro mecánico, un castillo hinchable, pintacaras, yincanas, paseo en poni y fotografía con la serpiente, además de poder interactuar con otros animales como cabritas y un ternero.A dicho evento, realizado en la finca Villa María Ana, asistió un total de 400 personas que pudieron disfrutar de un día lleno de diversión en un ambiente único, a la vez que contri-buían con nuestra entidad por el beneficio de colectivos con necesidades y riesgo de exclusión. Por ello, deseamos dar las gracias a los asistentes y organizadores que hicieron que ese día fuera inolvidable.Deseosos de que el año próximo podamos repetir estas y otras actividades donde compartir con todos vosotros un espacio de encuentro y felicidad, trabajaremos para que sea posible y alberguemos al máximo número de asistentes y participantes, deseando proporcionaros momentos únicos, divertidos y en compañía de toda la familia.

From its inception in 2006, Río Safari Elche Foundation has expanded its sphere of activity, not only in the area of therapeutic programs and social action projects, but also it has risen to collaborate on charitable activi-ties for entities that requested its assistance. The Río Safari Elche Foundation hosted this past 2014 its first charitable event, thanks to the efforts and creativi-ty of its president Andrea Ibáñez. The purpose of this event was to create a fun meeting for everyone who already knew the foundation and for all the families that had ever participated in a therapy program, but also to spread the word about our work and to collect funds to extend our projects. We organized a sports day for all members of the family, and thankfully the great public attendance and also the media volume exceeded all expectations by far. For all this we are extremely grateful for the contributions, the work and the help of all the attendants, and of course we thank the Santa Pola City Council, Gym Noray, Mar Sport, Elche Hiking Union, Cicles Garma, Sprinter, judo Isabel Fernández, Mustang, Club Náutico Santa Pola, Lanja-rón, Miguel Hernández University, Elche Football Club, Mondraker and Río Safari Elche, that made possible the event’s success. This event was named I Family Sports Day, it took place at the seaside promenade of Santa Pola on March 9th 2014 ant it was of free access to all the interested people. Two spinning classes and two dancing classes were organized, for all of those who had bought their bag which included an event-themed sports T-shirt. For the smallest family members there was a recreational area for leisure activities, such as dancing or traditional games. There was also a space dedicated to adapted sports for people with reduced mobility. In addition, there were several information tables, with the presen-ce of Fundación Síndrome -5p, a collection box of plas-tic caps (which are then sold for buying wheelchairs), information about the gyms that collaborated in the

On the other hand, with the most valuable assis-tance of the Mustang - Pascual Ros Foundation, Juan Perán Pikolinos and Com Deu Gastronomic Club, we hosted on October 18th 2014 the chari-table party ‘Tex Mex’, where all those present could enjoy a Mexican buffet meal, with live music and several leisure options and workshops, such as a mechanic bull, an inflatable castle, face painting, gymkhana, a pony ride… This ‘Tex Mex’ party was attended by 400 people, who enjoyed a very fun day and contributed with their presence to the benefit of collectives with care needs and risk of social exclusion. For this we thank all the attendants and organizers who made this day unforgettable. We hope to be able to host more special events in the future. We will certainly continue to work hard in hoping and looking forward to create more spaces of encounter and happiness for everyone who wishes to walk this journey with us.

El pasado 21 de junio, el día más largo del año, se celebró al animal más largo del mundo, la jirafa. La iniciativa del Giraffe World Day fue puesta en marcha por la Giraffe Conservation Foundation y a ella se unieron multitud de zoológicos de todo el mundo, entre ellos Río Safari Elche. El propósito de esta jornada dedicada en especial a este emblemático animal era, además de rendirle homenaje y darle a conocer un poco más a fondo, concienciar a los visitantes sobre la precaria situación que atraviesa la jirafa y los retos que afronta la supervivencia de la especie en libertad.

Río Safari Elche celebró el 27 de junio el 'Dream Night at the Zoo', una iniciativa a nivel europeo en la que partici-pan muchos zoológicos y que consiste en invitar a niños con cáncer y sus familiares para que disfruten de una jornada agradable con los animales. Llevamos varios años celebrando esta jornada. Recibimos la visita de miembros de las asociaciones AFANION de Alicante, Valencia, Castellón, Murcia y Albacete...

Día Mundial Del Orangután

El orangután, único gran simio asiático, es un animal muy amenazado en libertad, debido principalmente a la pérdi-da implacable de su hábitat. Esta grave situación es desconocida por la inmensa mayoría, si bien empleamos a diario productos que provienen de esa deforestación, de la mano de grandes empresas que no están compro-metidas con la conservación de la naturaleza. El Día Mundial del Orangután estaba dirigido a exponer esta realidad a los visitantes y a mostrar maneras de colaborar con la salvación de este majestuoso animal, como puede hacerse, por ejemplo, comprando marcas que sí velan por una tala prudente, en lugar de otras que no lo hacen.

Recogida De Móviles

El Instituto Jane Goodall tiene en marcha, entre sus nume-rosos proyectos, una campaña de recogida de móviles en desuso, con el fin de rescatar un mineral que contienen y que es reutilizable, el coltán, cuya obtención depende de la explotación de minas africanas con mano de obra en situación de semi-esclavitud, y poniendo en peligro un entorno natural de gran biodiversidad. Río Safari Elche es desde 2014 un punto de recogida y sensibilización para esta campaña, y gracias a la implicación de nuestros visitantes hemos recogido hasta la fecha más de 60 móvi-les.

Dia mundial de la JirafaOn June 21st, the longest day of the year, we celebrated the longest-necked animal. World Giraffe Day is an initiative of the Giraffe Conservation Foundation, an opportunity not only to celebrate these fascinating animals but an annual event to raise awareness and shed light on the challenges they face in the wild. Many zoos joined this new and exciting event, Río Safari Elche among them.

Dream Night at the Zoo

On the 27th of June Rio Safari Elche celebrated the ‘Dream Night at the Zoo’, a European initiative in which many zoos participate. Children affected by cancer and their family are invited to the park in order to enjoy a nice day surrounded by animals. We have celebrated this day during last years and at 2014 received the visit of AFANION association’s members from Alicante, Valencia, Castellon, Murcia and Albacete.

World Orangutan Day

The orangutan, only Asian great ape, is a severely endangered animal in the wild, due mainly to habitat loss. This very serious situation is unknown to the majority, although we all use products that contain the palm oil obtained from that deforestation. World Orangutan Day, which we celebrated on August 19th, was an opportunity to expose this reality to our guests and show ways in which one can just help a little bit in contributing to the saving of these gentle creatures, like for example choosing brands that are committed to cautious forest cleaning instead of others that are not.

Mobile Phones Collected

The Jane Goodall Institute is running, among its many projects, a campaign for the recycling of old mobile phones, for they contain a mineral named coltan that is reusable. African mines are exploi-ted for the obtainment of coltan, where people work in semi-sla-very conditions and around which guerrilla groups fight for territory control. This is making a severe impact on the biodiversity of the place. Río Safari Elche is since 2014 an information and collection point for this campaign, and thanks to the implication of our visitors we have so far sent more than 60 disused cell phones to the Jane Goodall Institue.

En el momento en que redactamos el presente boletín se está construyendo una nueva instala-ción en Río Safari Elche, cuya apertura está prevista para la próxima primavera 2015. El nuevo enclave acogerá a un grupo de seis leones, tres de ellos blancos y sin igual en toda España. La instalación, asentada sobre un gran terreno de casi 3000m², ha sido pensada para el futuro crecimiento de la manada. Es transitable a pie y también sobre el tren neumático que recorre el interior del zoo. Se ha diseñado, incluso, un túnel acristalado que atravesará el recinto de punta a punta, consiguiendo una visión de increíble y pasmosa cercanía de los animales.Con todo ello Río Safari Elche sigue empeñan-do sus esfuerzos, un año más, en dar otro empuje a sus instalaciones, potenciando una significativa mejora en la calidad de vida de sus animales y también, por supuesto, mejorando la experiencia del visitante, sin el cual ninguno de estos avances sería posible.

Instalación Unica Leones BlancosAs we write this newsletter a new exhibit is being built in Río Safari Elche and its opening is planned for the spring of 2015. This new enclosure will hold a group of six lions, three of which are white and thus unique in Spain.The exhibit, located on a 3000m² space, has been designed to provide for the future growth of the pride. Visitors will be able to visit it on foot and from the train tour that goes through the zoo. There is even going to be a tunnel, crossing the exhibit from end to end, from which the visitor will experience a real close-up look of the animals.Through this Río Safari Elche aims one more year to shape up its exhibits, to improve the well-being of its animals and upgrade the visitor’s experience, without whom none of these reforms would be possi-ble.

En esta temporada de terapia, hemos tenido la enorme suerte de contar de nuevo con la colaboración de Obra Social “La Caixa” que han vuelto a apostar por nosotros en la realización de nuestro “Proyecto TAO, una terapia especial con un aliado especial”, además de haber contado con la contribución de nuestros colaboradores Fundación Pascual Ros, Fundación Juan Perán, Porronet S.L, Tempe, Tele Elx, Grupo Antón y todos los que han aportado su granito de arena para hacer posible que año tras año lleguemos a más personas que lo necesitan. Con este programa terapéutico se ha dado cobertura a 31 familias que tienen entre sus miembros a un familiar con necesida-des especiales, participando en un total de 10 sesiones de terapia cada una de ellas. Además, como novedad se ha incluido a 5 menores tutelados los cuales se encargaban de ayudar y apoyar tanto a los niños que recibían la terapia como a los familia-res, dentro y fuera del agua. Para poder evaluar los resultados se han utilizado varios instrumentos de medida, diferenciados según el tipo de beneficiario al que nos refiramos, siendo en el caso de niños afectados con discapacidad la utilización de un cuestionario ad hoc donde se registra el estado en el área motora, cognitiva, social y emocional. En el caso de los familiares, se ha evaluado la disminución del estrés con la utilización la escala de sobrecarga del cuidador test de Zarit. Por último, en el caso de los menores tutelados, se ha buscado conseguir un aumento en autoestima y autoconcepto, para lo que se ha utilizado la adaptación de la forma simplificada del Cuestionario de Coopersmith. Las medidas se han realizado en dos tomas, una inicial y previa a la realización de la terapia y otra tras la intervención, con el fin de comparar los resultados. En cuanto a los resultados obtenidos, cabe destacar que se ha observado un descenso en el nivel de estrés del cuidador, encontrando una disminución al comparar la evaluación inicial y la final, hallando puntuaciones inferiores en el post-test, con esto tenemos un dato objetivo a la experiencia observada, donde año tras año se ha percibido que el familiar que participa en el agua con su hijo le beneficia actuando como una actividad de respiro familiar y con ello una disminución del estrés. Asimismo, se observa un aumento en la autoestima de los menores tutelados evaluados, donde tras su intervención se observa un incremento en los resultados posteriores. Por lo que respecta a los resultados hallados en los niños a los que se dirige la intervención, se ha observado mejoras en el área motora como aumento en el control postural y equilibrio, así como descenso en estereotipias, en el área cognitiva se obtienen mejoras como reconocimiento del esquema corporal (propio y de otros), imitación de sonidos y mejora en el lenguaje, incre-mento del reconocimiento de derecha e izquierda, colores, número, así como aumento de la atención tanto sostenida como selectiva, por no olvidarnos del área emocional y social, encontrando mayores evaluaciones en el ítem sonríe, confianza ante el entorno y ajuste social, en mantener el contacto ocular, guardar el turno y controlar los impulsos, así como en la expresión de emociones, siendo la gestual la que mayor puntuación obtiene tras la evaluación post-test.Agradecer de nuevo a todos los que con su contribución nos han ayudado a llevar adelante nuestro proyecto y a todas las familias que han participado y confiado en nosotros.

During this therapy season we have had the great fortune of counting on the collaboration of Obra Social “La Caixa”, which has backed us on the realization of our “TAO project, a special therapy with a special ally”, as well as on that of our contributors: Fundación Pascual Ros, Fundación Juan Perán, Porronet S.L., Tempe, TeleElx, Grupo Antón and all of those who have contribu-ted with their grain of sand to enable us year after year to reach out to more people. To this day our therapeutic program has provided therapy to 31 families that have among their members someone with special needs. Every one of them participated in 10 therapy sessions. Moreover, for the first time this year we have included the presence of 5 minors under guardianship, who would offer help and support both to the children receiving the therapy and their families, in and outside of the water. In order to evaluate the results, several measuring methods have been used, depending on the recipients; in the case of the children with disability, we made use of an ad hoc questionnaire that approaches the states of the motor, cognitive, social and emotional areas. As for the families of the children, we evaluated the decreasing levels of stress through the Zarit Caregiver Burden Interview. Lastly, in the case of the minors under guardianship, we have sought to improve self-concept and self-esteem, for the analysis of which we utilized a simplified form of the Coopersmith Self-Esteem Inventory. The measurement was done in two takes, an initial one previous to the therapy session and a second one after the session, with the purpose of comparing the results. As to the results obtained, it is noteworthy that the caregivers’ stress levels decreased, fact that we were able to observe when comparing the initial and the final evaluations, finding lower scores on the post-test. This means that we have an objective datum for the experience observed, where time after time we have seen that the caregiver inside the water with his or her child is benefiting from respite care and thus from a stress reduction. Likewise, an increase in the minors under guardianship’s self-es-teem is observed, for after their participations we have noted higher interview scores.In respect of the children to whom the therapy is directed, the improvements observed include motor enhancement, such as greater posture control and balance, as well as decreased stereotypy; also in the cognitive area we registered a better recogni-tion of the body scheme (both one self’s and others’), imitation of sounds, language boost, improved identification of right and left, of colors, of numbers, along with an attention increase (both sustained and selective). Furthermore, we achieved some successes in the emotional and social areas, as we registered greater frequency of the item ‘smiles’, confidence in the environ-ment and social adjustment, maintaining eye contact, waiting for a turn, impulse control, as well as expressing emotions -gestural expression being the one that adds most to the final evaluation score. Como cada año desde que iniciamos el proyecto de difusión de nuestra entidad mediante nuestro boletín, nos complace presentarles los datos extraídos tras las intervenciones llevadas a cabo durante la temporada de terapia de 2014. Los datos se obtienen realizando una comparación de medias con el fin de observar si existen diferencias entre las evaluaciones iniciales y las evaluaciones finales. En el presente año se ha amplia-do las evaluaciones cuidadores y a menores tutelados que han colaborados como voluntarios, además del estudio de las áreas que desde nuestros inicios lleva-mos realizando a nuestros beneficiarios directos. La hipótesis de partida es que se encontrará una dismi-nución del nivel de estrés en los cuidadores evaluados y un aumento en autoestima y autoconcepto en menores tutelados, además de mejoras en área emo-cional, social, cognitiva y motora en los usuarios inter-venidos.Se comienza con la exposición de los datos obtenidos tras realizar la media inicial de los usuarios que han participado en la intervención terapéutica, evaluados por los familiares mediante un cuestionario que registra el área motora, cognitiva, emocional y social, y con-trastando estos datos con el cuestionario final que registra las mismas áreas. En el siguiente apartado, se puede observar los datos obtenidos por el familiar principal que se introducía en las sesiones de terapia para evaluar el nivel de estrés, para lo cual debían completar el test de Zarit el primer día de sesión y se volvía a contestar el último día de sesión. Por último, se exponen los dados obtenidos mediante la evaluación de los menores tutelados, los cuales contestaban a los test el primer y último día de sesión. Tras esta introduc-ción, pasamos a exhibir los datos.En primer lugar, podemos observar los resultados obte-nidos al analizar los datos registrados antes de la sesión y tras ésta, en los beneficiarios directos a los que se aplicaba la intervención, observando un descenso en la media de las pulsaciones por minuto tomadas previa a la sesión y posterior a ésta.

As every year since we initiated the diffusion of our entity through our newsletter, we are happy to submit to you the data extracted from the therapies season of the past 2014. The data is obtained by making a com-parison between the average numbers, in order to conclude whether there exist differences between the initial evaluations and the final ones. In 2014 the evaluations have been extended to the animals’ trainers and also to minors under guardianship who have collaborated during the therapy sessions as volunteers, besides from the studies that we have been conducting with our direct beneficiaries since the inception of our project.As a preliminary hypothesis it was proposed that there would be a decrease in the stress levels of the animals’ trainers and an increase in the self-esteem as well as an improved self-concept in the case of the volunteers, in addition to an upgrade in emotional, social, cognitive and motor areas in the recipients.Firstly, we report the data obtained after calculating the previous-to-therapy average scores of the therapy recipients, who are evaluated by the family by means of a questionnaire that registers the social, motor, emo-tional and cognitive areas, and then contrasting these data with the post-therapy questionnaire scores which register the same areas. The following section shows the data obtained from the relatives who would take part in each recipient’s therapy to quantify the stress levels, for which they would have to complete the Zarit test on the first day of the therapy program and then again on the last day. Lastly, we present the data obtained from the evaluations of the minors under guardianship, who would answer the test on the first and the last day of the therapy program. Following this introduction, let us layout the figures. In the first place, regarding the direct recipients of the therapy, we can see the numbers registered before and after every session, and we can observe a decrea-se in the average of heartbeats per minute from the first measuring to the second.

Otro dato que se registra y se analiza es el sueño, donde los padres contestan mediante una escala Likert donde los rangos de valores van del 1 al 5 (siendo 1 la puntuación que más difiere con la cuestión plan-teada y 5 la puntuación que más se ajusta). Se analiza la media del cuestionario pretest y la media del cues-tionario post test. .

Por lo que respecta a las áreas analizadas previa a la intervención y posterior a ella, obtenemos los siguien-tes datos medidos mediante una escala Likert con rango de 1 a 5, donde 1 significaría “nunca” y 5 signifi-caría “siempre”

In respect of the different areas analyzed before and after the intervention, we obtained the following data, measured by means of a Lykert scale, in a range from 1 to 5, where 1 stands for “never” and 5 stands for “always”.

Another parameter registered and analyzed is sleep. We asked the parents of the therapy recipients to punctuate their child’s sleep on a scale from 1 to 5, 1 being the score that differs most from the issue raised and 5 for suitability).

Como se ha explicado anteriormente, se ha analizado el nivel de estrés y sobrecarga del familiar principal que se introducía en la terapia. Para ello, se ha utiliza-do el instrumento test de Zarit-escala de sobrecarga del cuidador, que se realiza de forma autoadministra-da. Consta de 22 ítems relacionados con las sensacio-nes del cuidador, con formato de respuesta escala Likert con un gradiente de frecuencia de 1 (nunca) a 5 (casi siempre), contando con una consistencia interna de la escala de 0,91 y una fiabilidad test-retest de 0,86. Las puntuaciones menores de 47 correlaciona con un nivel de no sobrecarga, llegando a una sobrecarga intensa en puntuaciones superiores a 55.Para extraer los resultados se ha calculado la media de las puntuaciones que ha obtenido cada familiar en el pretest, y comparado con la media obtenida por los familiares en el post-test.

As has already been explained, we addressed the stress level and burden or overload of the main family member that would take part in the therapy. For this particular analysis, the tool used was the Zarit Caregiver Burden Interview, which is a self-administered questionnaire. It is composed by 22 items related to the caregiver’s sensations, the format of the answer being a Likert scale, with a frequency gradient of 1 (never) to 5 (always). The internal consistency of the scale stands at 0,91 and the reliability –determined trough a test/re-test procedure- stands at 0,86. Scores under 47 correlate with a no-overload level; intense overloads are estimated at scores over 55. In order to extract the results, the average score obtained by each caregiver on the pre-test was calculated and then compared with the score obtained on the post-test.

For evaluating the self-esteem variable of the minors under guardianship who volunteered at our therapy sessions we used the Self-esteem questionnaire for secondary education students, which is a reduced and adapted version of the original Self-concept Inventory at School (IAME, García, 1995). This questionnaire consists of 19 items, with 4 answer options: from ‘A’ for “strongly agree” through to ‘D’ for “stron-gly disagree”. The maximum score obtainable is 64 points and the minimum is 16 points. A higher score reflects a higher self-esteem. The liability of the test stands at a 0,70 alpha coefficient, and by the two halves Spearman Brown procedure the liability coefficient amounts also to 0,70.The data obtained from the evaluations of the minors under guardianship reflect a slight increase on the measured varia-ble (self-esteem) when comparing the results of the pre and the post questionnaires. The pre-evaluation is filled on the first day of the therapy program and the post-evaluation is filled on the last day, which means that between one and another there is a 10 days interval of time. It could be interesting to repeat this study, although extending the participation period, which might result in a greater increase of the varia-ble ‘self-esteem’.

Para evaluar la variable de autoestima de los menores tutelados, se ha utilizado el Cuestionario de evaluación de la autoestima para alumnos de enseñanza secundaria, instrumento que es una forma reducida y adaptada del cuestionario original Inventario de Autoconcepto en el Medio Escolar (IAME) García, 1995.Consiste en un cuestionario que evalúa la autoestima mediante 19 ítems, con 4 opciones de respuesta (A= muy de acuerdo; D= muy en desacuerdo). La puntuación máxima que se puede obtener en el cuestionario es de 64 puntos y la mínima de 16, reflejando mayor autoestima según mayor puntuación.La fiabilidad de la prueba arroja un coeficiente de alpha de fiabilidad de 0,70, y mediante el procedimiento de las dos mitades de Spearman Browm tiene un coeficiente de fiabilidad de 0,70.Los datos obtenidos por los menores tutelados evaluados reflejan que existe un ligero aumento de la variable medida (autoestima) al comparar los resultados del cuestionario de forma inicial y de forma final. Comentar que la evaluación inicial se realiza el día de inicio de las terapias y su participación, y la evaluación final se lleva a cabo el último día de terapias, por lo que entre la medición pre y post existe una diferencia de 10 días. Por ello, sería interesante repetir dicho estudio, llevando a cabo una intervención más prolongada en el tiempo, lo que podría reflejar un mayor aumento en la variable autoestima.

Premio Elche Sin Barreras: El Excelentísimo Ayuntamiento de Elche concedió a Fundación Río Safari Elche el premio 'Elche sin barreras' del año 2014 con motivo del 'Día Mundial de la Discapacidad', premiando así el trabajo que realizamos con las personas que sufren diferentes discapacidades.

Premio Rampa de Oro: ¿Sabías qué...? En el 2006, año en el que nació la Fundación, recibimos el premio 'Rampa de oro'. Se trata de un distintivo que entregó la Comisión Municipal de Discapaci-tados del Ayuntamiento de Elche a Río Safari por la capacidad integradora que por entonces ya tenía el parque, destacando su disposición de itinerarios adaptados para discapacitados y su fomento de la contratación laboral.

Elche Without Barriers: The Elche City Council awarded Río Safari Foundation with the prize ‘Elche Without Barriers’ on 2014 on the Interna-tional Day of Persons with Disabilities.

Childhood Prize: The Valencia Regional Go-vernment acknowledged our solidary work. On November 2013 Río Safari Elche was awar-ded the ‘Childhood Prize’, under the cate-gory of supportive firm. Abel Ibáñez received this prize directly from the president of the Valencia Regional Government, Alberto Fabra, and the Valencia mayor, Rita Barberá.

Premio Infancia La Generalitat Valenciana reconoció el trabajo solidario que realizamos en el parque. En noviembre de 2013 entregó a Río Safari Elche el 'Premio Infancia' en la categoría de empresa solidaria. Abel Ibáñez recibió este reconoci-miento de manos del presidente de la Generalitat, Alberto Fabra, y la alcaldesa de Valencia, Rita Barberá.

you find someone that helps you out and tries
