This is the Maori legend of how Aotearoa (New Zealand) was created. There was once a boy named Maui.

When he was very young, he hid in the fishing boat of his brothers. When the brothers went out fishing they

discovered Maui in the boat. They were too far out at sea to take him back. Maui dropped his hook into the

water and pulled out a very heavy ‘fish’. It was so heavy he asked his brothers to help him. After a lot of hard

work, Maui pulled it up. It wasn’t a fish, it was the North Island. Maui’s brothers weren’t very nice. They thought

it was a big fish and each brother wanted it for himself. They started cutting pieces out of the island and hitting

it with sticks. These are now the mountains and valleys of the North Island. Today, in Maori, the name for the

North Island translates as ‘Maui’s fish’ and the name for the South Island translates as ‘Maui’s boat’. If you look

at a map of New Zealand, you can see the North Island looks like a fish, facing towards the South Island.

A. Read and write T (true) or F (false). 1 Fred’s a teacher at Melissa’s school. __________
