We welcome you today We would like to remind our visitors of the following;:

All people are encouraged to participate in the sacred services of our Church. We hope that you will be able to worship as well as have fellowship with us. Should you wish any information about the Orthodox Faith or this parish in particular, please see the rector or any member of the church. We are able to place you on our mailing list.

Only Orthodox Christians may receive the Eucharist (Holy Communion) in the Orthodox Church. In like manner, Orthodox Christians may not receive the sacraments in an non-Orthodox Church. While we hope that one day all Christians will find unity and be able to approach the chalice of our Lord together, we observe the teachings of the Church that the Eucharist is a gift of unity and not a means of unity.

We remind our faithful and visitors of the following guidelines concerning the Holy Sacraments in the Orthodox Church.

Orthodox Christians are urged to receive Holy Communion frequently. Communicants should be at peace with others before approaching the chalice(Mt 5:23-24) Realize the importance of making a thorough examination of sins and transgressions against God, ourselves and others and

having prayed for forgiveness before coming to Holy Communion. Frequent communicants should come to Holy Confession at least four times a year (during the four fasting periods of the

year). and additionally when an examination of conscience reveals the necessity to do so in order to heal any sinful behavior. Communicants should fast from all foods and liquids from the evening before receiving Holy Communion. Communicants should read prayers in preparation for receiving Holy Communion. All Orthodox Christians must receive the sacraments at least once a year. Those who are late for Divine Liturgy ( after the reading of the Epistle and Gospel) should not approach the chalice. Those who are ill or who have special physical needs are exempt from the above guidelines. Infants and children (up to the age of seven) who are Orthodox Christians may receive Holy Communion and are exempt from

the above guidelines. Thank you for gathering to worship with us today. Together we have glorified the One God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. May we be brought closer to one another and closer to God by following the eternal teachings of our Lord. Нагадуємо нашлім гостям., що:

Lesson from the Epistle of Saint Paul to the Hebrews (c. 11, v. 24-26; 32-40)

Brethren, through faith Moses refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter, when he was grown up. He preferred to share the hardships of the people of God rather than enjoy the temporary pleasures of sin. He considered Christian martyrdom more precious than all the treasures of Egypt. For he was looking forward to the ultimate reward in heaven. I do not need to say more. For time would fail me, if I told you what Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, David, Samuel, and the prophets have achieved through faith. They conquered kingdoms, lived righteously, received new promises, shut the mouths of lions, quenched raging fire, escaped the edge of the sword, found strength in their time of trial, became mighty in war, and put foreign armies to flight. Some returned to their women from certain death as if by resurrection. Some were tortured, but refused to accept their release, because they wanted to inherit a better life after their resurrection. Others endured derision, floggings, chains, and imprisonment. They were stoned, they were sawed asunder, they were tortured, they were put to the sword. They went about in sheepskins and goatskins, destitute, ill-treated by the world, which was not worthy of them. They wandered in deserts, in mountains, in caves, and in the holes of the earth. Yet, all these martyrs, although well attested by their faith, did not obtain the divine promises. Because God had something better in store for all of us. He wanted us all to reach the fulfillment of our hopes together.

До євреїв 11:24-26, 32-40 Завдяки вірі Мойсей, уже в дорослому віці, відмовився, щоб його називали сином фараонової дочки. Він обрав собі інший шлях: зносити труднощі разом із народом Божим, аніж насолоджуватися плинними радощами, що приносять гріх. Страждання за Христа Мойсей вважав більшим багатством, ніж усі скарби Єгипту. Адже він дивився далеко вперед і бачив там свою винагороду. Чи треба мені продовжувати наводити приклади? Не стане мені часу, щоб розповісти про Ґедеона, Варака, Самсона, Єффая, Давида, Самуїла і пророків. Покладаючись на їхню непохитну віру, вони рятували царства, встановлювали справедливість між людьми, і через те дістали Божі обітниці. Вони замикали пащі левам, вгамовували лють вогню, їх не брав меч. Ті, хто були немічними, набували силу, а в битві ставали могутніми й змушували тікати ворожі війська. Загиблі вставали з мертвих і поверталися до своїх жінок. Інших було віддано на тортури, й вони відмовлялися від полегшення своєї долі. Тож після смерті ті люди могли здобути краще життя. Дехто зазнав збиткування й батога, дехто — кайданів та в’язниць. Їх побивали камінням, розпилювали навпіл, рубали мечами. Вони носили овечі й козячі шкури, жили в злиднях, та пройшли через переслідування і труднощі. Світ був не гідним їх. Вони блукали в пустелях і горах, мешкали в печерах і провалах земних.

Вони догодили Богу, але не одержали обіцяного Їм. Всевишній приготував для нас дещо краще, бо прагнув нашої досконалості, але тільки разом з нами вони отримають благословення.

The Gospel According to Saint John (c. 1, v. 44-51)

At that time, Jesus decided to leave for Galilee, found Philip, and said to him: "Follow me." Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the home town of Andrew and Peter. Philip met Nathanael and said to him: "We have found the man of whom Moses and the prophets wrote in the Scriptures, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph." Nathanael asked him: "Can anything good come from Nazareth ?" Philip answered him: "Come and see." Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and said: "Here is a genuine Israelite, in whom there is no guile." Nathanael asked him: "How do you know me?" Jesus answered him: "Even before Philip called you I saw you while you were under the fig tree." Nathanael said: "Rabbi, you are the Son of God, you are the King of Israel." Jesus said to him: "You believe because I told you that I had seen you under the fig tree. You will see greater wonders than that." Then he added: "Verily, verily I say to you, from now on you will see heaven open wide and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Messiah."

Побачивши, що Нафанаїл іде до Нього, Ісус сказав: «Ось справжній ізраїльтянин, який зовсім не має лукавства ». «Звідки Ти знаєш мене?» — спитав Нафанаїл. Ісус відповів: «Перш ніж тебе покликав Пилип, Я бачив тебе, коли ти сидів під фіґовим деревом». «Равві, Ти — Син Божий, Цар Ізраїлю», — сказав Нафанаїл. Ісус же відповів йому на те: «Ти повірив у Мене, бо Я сказав, що бачив тебе під фіґовим деревом? Та ти побачиш іще більші дива». 2 March, 2020 Feast of St. Leo the Great, Pope of Rome and St. Flavian, Patriarch of Constantinople TO: THE BELOVED CLERGY AND FAITHFUL OF OUR HOLY UKRAINIAN ORTHODOX CHURCH OF THE USA RE: THE ONSET OF A NEW VIRUS STRAIN CALLED CORONAVIRUS OR COVID-19 Dear Brothers and Sister in our Lord, CHRIST IS AMONGST US! HE IS AND ALWAYS SHALL BE!

The words of this traditional greeting and response between Orthodox Christians are a powerful proclamation of our firm belief that the Son of God, the Second Person of the Holy Trinity remains with us at all times and in all places, in particular having received His Most Holy Body and Blood in the Eucharist on a regular basis. We can be assured of this regardless of anything we face during this earthly pilgrimage, whether it is something that brings us overwhelming joy or something that poses a threat to us, like the deadly virus spreading throughout the world as we type these words.

One faithful member of our Church contacted us recently and the first words out of her mouth were: “Here we go again!” She was not making light of the real threat that the coronavirus is. Rather, she is stating a fact that mankind has been faced with horrific plagues and communicable diseases throughout its existence. She enumerated the likes of the Black plague, the Bubonic plague, the West Nile virus, the BIRD flu, the Ebola virus and the Swine flu among other instances and she expressed her sincere hope that people will not look at this new threat of the coronavirus with a “no big deal” attitude. We join her in that hope and we urge all of our clergy and faithful to diligently take all measures in their personal and communal lives to protect themselves and others from the spread of this deadly virus.

WEEKS AHEAD TO PROTECT YOURSELVES AND YOUR FAMILIES, ALONG WITH THE HUMAN COMMUNITY AS A WHOLE. FOR SUCH INSTRUCTIONS WE URGE YOU TO GO TO THE OFFICIAL WEBSITE OF THE CENTER FOR DISEASE CONTROL – www.cdc.gov SO THAT YOU CAN EDUCATE YOURSELVES THE STEPS YOU SHOULD TAKE IN YOUR DAILY LIVES. PLEASE DO NOT HESITATE IN DOING THIS.

With regard to Liturgical Worship in our Churches , we pray that you do not excuse yourselves based on fear from the absolutely necessary common worship – together as the sons and daughters of Christ – to pray along with the Mother of God for His protection during this crisis and to be prepared as parish families in Christ to reach out to the particular agencies in your local area that are providing care and necessities for those who are afflicted with this virus. We believe that our common prayer, in particular during this Great Lenten season, will offer a profound witness to God about our faith in His Power to eradicate this threat to mankind.

As we gather in our local churches for worship, we believe it might be wise to limit physical contact with the traditional liturgical expressions of faith in reality – our holy Icons – unless provision is made to clean them before and after each veneration – other than just a dry cloth. During this time of uncertainty, it will be altogether proper to bow or prostrate ourselves before the Icons to express our love for the Lord and the Saints who provide the example for the way we should live our lives. We have always found great spiritual comfort during our visits to the Holy Land and the churches there, when we witnessed faithful Christians venerating Icons and waving from the Icons toward themselves (a “come here” type of wave) seeking to pull the Grace and faithfulness of the Saints being venerated into themselves so that they might emulate them in all their words and deeds.

We feel an urgent need to comment most specifically on the Holy Eucharist – receiving the Holy Body and Blood of Christ our Lord – in Holy Communion. We must during times like the present, never doubt in the power of the Chalice, dear brothers and sisters. It contains true LIFE and true LOVE by which no harm could ever enter our lives. When the common spoon of communion is dipped into the Chalice following the communion of one individual, it is cleansed by the Blood of our Lord beyond our broadest comprehension of what “cleansing” is in human terms. Throughout all the history of our more than two millennium Church, we can recall no thread of witness or even a shadow of one, indicating that any disease has ever been spread through the Chalice containing the Precious Body and Blood of our Lord. Perhaps the most convincing fact here is that if the Chalice did, indeed, spread disease, we would certainly be praying regularly for the repose of the souls of tens of thousands or more deacons and priests who, throughout the past 2000 years have consumed the full Chalices following communion of the faithful during hundreds of thousands of Divine Liturgies throughout our history. This is our faith, dearly beloved, and if we lose that faith, we are in grave danger far beyond the physical danger of a virus.

We have confidence that just as the previous viruses and other threats to mankind have finally been defeated, we will witness the same today. Let us be exemplary examples of faith and action to one another – not only throughout the duration of the present threat - but throughout our lives. We can work miracles by that faith and in the resulting joy, draw others in to Christ’s Vineyard. You all are in our prayers daily and we ask for yours for ourselves. St. James states clearly: “Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray. Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing Psalms. Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the Church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the Name of the Lord. AND THE PRAYER OF FAITH WILL SAVE THE SICK, AND THE LORD WILL RAISE HIM UP.” (James 5:13-15)

Our parish will be purchasing new vestments for those who serve and will serve in the altar. The current vestments that the altar servers wear are about 50 years old. While they were taken care of very well, it is time to update them and plan for future generations. We will be purchasing different colors, White for the 40 days after Pascha and Christmas through the leave-taking of Theophany, Purple for the 50 days of Great Lent, and Gold for every other day of the year. The purchase of altar server vestments will include the purchasing of priest and deacon vestments. While some church organizations have come forward to help cover the cost of the vestments there is still an opportunity to donate to the purchasing of vestments. In each color we will be purchasing four adult size vestments at $105 per vestment, six child size vestments (that we will order longer than we need, hem, and let out the hem as the boys grow) at $85 per vestment, Deacon vestments at $218 per set, Priest vestments at $273 per set, and matching chalice covers at $63 per set. Lenten Recipes Sweet & Sour Cauliflower 1 head of cauliflower 3 Tbs. olive oil 2 Tbs. water 1 ½ Tbs Corn starch 1 cup vegetable broth ¼ cup soy sauce/ Tamari sauce 3 Tbs. brown sugar/maple syrup 2 tsp. chili flakes 2 Tbs. tahini 5-6 cloves chopped garlic 3 Tbs. rice vinegar To prepare the sauce mix vegetable broth, soy sauce, rice vinegar, brown sugar, tahini, chili flakes, and garlic. Separately wash and cut cauliflower into bite sized florets. In a pan add oil, cauliflower and water. Stir and cover. Let cook 4-5 minutes. Once cauliflower softens add half of the sauce and stir. Let simmer for a few minutes. Add cornstarch into remaining sauce and mix. Now add remaining sauce to cauliflower florets in pan. Serve hot on rice and garnish with spring onions and sesame seeds. *************************************************** ****************************************

This Sunday will be the first Sunday of Great Lent, on which we celebrate the Triumph of Orthodoxy.

In our parish and in parishes around the world, we will process with icons held high, celebrating together the rightful return of icons to the church so many years ago. As you know, icons were removed from our churches in the 8th century, and then fully restored in the 9th century. The Sunday of the Triumph of Orthodoxy celebrates the return of the icons to their rightful place in Orthodox worship.

Those of us who live in the West, are a minority in nations filled with people who do not revere and often, do not like, icons. This day offers us an excellent opportunity to discuss icons with our kids — both why and how we use them, why other people don’t like them, and what they’re missing out on. Most importantly, this is an opportunity to talk about how we Orthodox understand the materiality of this world and its potential for holiness.

We know that in the beginning, God was there, and He created everything — he created the planets and the stars, the land and the water and the air. He made plants and animals and human beings. And at the end of each day of this work, He saw that it was good. All of the material of this world, the dirt and the rocks and the wood, the people and animals and the oceans, all of it is good.

In the Garden of Eden Adam knew that it was good. He received the gifts God gave them and held them up to the Lord, blessing them and thanking Him. There was a beautiful flowing energy of blessing and goodness of gratitude and gifts. God gave Adam received an offer to back gratitude and this gratitude allowed God to multiply his blessings even more!

One day, however, Adam and Eve broke the cycle of blessing and thanksgiving. A serpent told them that they could be like gods, so they ate fruit without God’s blessing and without gratitude for His generosity. They took what they wanted in the hopes of usurping God’s position, of ruling in His place. They disrupted the cycle of blessing and thanksgiving, and Paradise was closed to them: they took all of creation with them into the fallen world, newly subject to corruption, decay and death.

In its original state, everything created was good. All of these material things were holy. The reason that the material world isn’t properly holy anymore is because Adam and Eve’s stewardship was lacking, because we led creation into that fallen state.

Now here we are, on the other side of things, coming into Great Lent. We remember that Adam and Eve fell because they refused to fast, and now we enter our own fast. St. Anthony the Great teaches us that ‘it is not a sin to eat: it is a sin to eat without gratitude’ so we eat gratefully, showing our love by eating according to God’s rules, according to the guidelines set out by our Holy Church.

We sanctify the human body by fasting, by doing prostrations and breathing in incense. We sanctify it by the sacraments – baptism and chrismation, holy unction and of course, holy communion, when we take Christ into ourselves, when we receive the divine at the chalice.

But it’s not just our bodies that we sanctify. We are sanctifying all of matter. When our priests and bishops perform services to bless holy water and holy oil, God is sanctifying matter. When we ask God to bless our food and our homes, we’re asking Him to sanctify matter. We can go into the wilderness and glorify God for the forests and the waterfalls, and we can ask Him to bless them and sanctify them. Part of our larger project as human beings is to restore the world to the Kingdom of Heaven, to that holy, sanctified state of Paradise.

Indeed, we know that the Holy Spirit itself is everywhere present and fills all things — it fills all things. The Holy Spirit is present in all of the things, all of the matter, all of the stuff. You and I, our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit. This entire world can be a temple of the Holy Spirit, if human beings would just start worshipping God in everything they do. It is with this worldview, this perspective on God’s creation, that the Orthodox embrace icons.

You see, the argument against icons is that while God is uncreated and infinite, icons are just lousy old matter; they’re wood and paint, or paper and glue. They’re not God, and we shouldn’t confuse them with God.

Now of course, we know that. We worship only the uncreated God; we do not worship icons.

But we do venerate them, we do love them. That’s because we don’t see the world as being split between the spiritual and the physical. We don’t agree that it’s body vs. soul and material vs. transcendent, stuff vs. God. God created the material stuff, and He saw that it was good. He also created Adam and Eve — human beings made up of both body and soul, both the material and the transcendent. And He saw that it was good. The Holy Spirit fills everything. We can love matter, because God has declared that it is good, and has filled it with His Holy Spirit.

It’s ok to venerate some matter – to show respect and love, to consider something holy and sacred. Matter can be sacred.

Children from the later preschool years and up can understand the story of the iconoclasts, who successfully removed icons from the churches. Throughout history, various heresies have risen up. A group of people has started to preach the faith differently, coming up with ideas that just aren’t true. Whenever this happened, our Holy Church would convene a Council of bishops and patriarchs to discuss this strange teaching and to clarify our common teaching. In that spirit, teaching about the iconoclasts is not just an interesting historic note, but it’s really a great introduction to how the Church works: the complaints and different teachings of the iconoclasts caused the Church to consider how it does things, and eventually a Council declared that icons were good, and they produced a sort of do’s and don’ts for the use of icons.

Back then, there were apparently those who would mix paint scrapings into Holy Communion, elevating the icon somehow to become Christ’s body and blood, and there were people who would take an icon as their godparent at baptism. The Church agreed that this was too much, it was excessive, and those concerns have helped us to develop the clarifications that we pass onto our children today: we venerate icons, but we do not worship them. When we look at an icon, as we commonly say, we are looking at a window to heaven! We are seeing through the paint and the wood, to the real person –

whether Christ or one of His Saints – whom we know to be with our Father in heaven right now. When we look at an icon of our Lord and start praying, our prayers are directed to Christ, not to an icon. We do not ask the icon of the Theotokos to pray for us; we ask the Theotokos herself to pray for us, with the aid of her icon before us.

In church, as we celebrate the Divine Liturgy, we know that we’re joined by countless saints and angels, but we cannot see them. By covering the walls with iconography, make that invisible reality, visible.

No one will ever ask you if you have faith in the material, visible world — of course you do. We have knowledge of things that exist materially; we know what water is and what rocks are. It’s the invisible things, the immaterial things, like God and the saints who intercede for us, that require faith. When one first comes to the basic question of whether we believe in God, we are asking ourselves if we can believe in the invisible.

The icon helps us to focus on the person with whom we are communicating, but it does more than that. It presents their material, historic reality to us, as we pray. These are real people, who lived in this real world, and had faces and personalities and experiences. The icon helps to keep us rooted in this truth, lest our fantastic, creative minds begin to reinvent those real people.

I grew up without icons, and without traditional prayers, and as I often tell my kids, I had this way of praying to Jesus where I would explain myself — why I was angry with someone or why I had decided to do the wrong thing — and because my way of praying was really talking to myself, I almost always decided that because Jesus loved me, He agreed with me.

Surely Jesus does not agree with us when we’re off to do the wrong thing, but I had a way of just declaring His agreement. The problem is that I was treating Jesus like my imaginary friend — an invisible playmate who would do what I wanted when I wanted it. But Jesus is not imaginary; He’s very real.

The icon shows us Christ’s reality: He truly came down to the earth and took human form. He had a body and a face — He was a specific human like us, only unlike us, He was also fully God. He was material and visible, so when we depict Him in an icon, we are seeing Jesus Himself, not our imaginary friend. The icon helps remind us that Jesus is not who we make of Him; He is Himself, and we are not free to create a new Jesus to make ourselves feel better.

Our icons are windows to heaven, showing us those angels and Saints who are already there in the Kingdom, and they’re tools to help us focus when we pray. They can even be a call to prayer – how many of us will see an icon and cross ourselves, sanctifying our bodies and calling our hearts to prayer?

At the earliest ages, we should be teaching our children how to venerate icons. They should be crossing themselves and kissing the icons. I tell my kids that we kiss an icon when we walk into the room just as we’d go over and kiss our grandparents when entering a room. As we enter, we recognize the presence of our loved ones, we stop and we greet them with a kiss and a few words, to show our love and respect for them. It’s natural to treat the icons of our Lord, of his Mother and all of the Saints, our beloved intercessors, with the same love and respect.

This Sunday is the first Sunday of Great Lent. Here, as we begin to sanctify our bodies and our hearts by fasting and praying, we stop to celebrate the triumph of the Orthodox icon.

In our parish, all of the Sunday School will join the procession. Even our littlest kids will hold up their icons proudly and process with Father this Sunday. Parents will carry infants in their arms as the babies slobber over icons. Being a part of a procession teaches them something about being a member of this Holy Church, and about our joy at openly celebrating our beloved icons.

If you’d like to teach older children a clear history of icons, I do recommend Mary Paloumpis Hallick’s book, The Story of Icons, published by Holy Cross Orthodox Press, which is written for our older youth and covers the full history of icons. We Orthodox talk about how every human being is an icon of Christ, for every one of us is made in His image. May we all begin to see the icon of Christ inside ourselves and inside every human being on this earth!
