APOSTOLIC EXHORTATION JOY OF THE GOSPEL

Pope Francis’ exhortation begins with a reflection on today’s world that, in seeking pleasures and consumerism, sometimes loses sight of what is important and becomes caught up in their own interest, without room for others or space for the poor. He assures that this way of life only leads to sadness. Faced with this, the invitation is toward an encounter or reencounter with Jesus Christ, who is the only on who can restore our joy and gives dignity conferred by an infinite and unbreakable love. He then goes on to consider several passages from the Old Testament that proclaim the joy of salvation, such as Isaiah 9:12, 12:6, 40:9, and 49:13. He assures that perhaps the most exciting invitation is that of the prophet Zephaniah, who presents God as the luminous center of the celebration and joy that wants to communicate this joy to his people. In the Gospel the glorious light of Christ is also found. He cites passages from Luke 1:28, 1:41, 1:47, John 3:29, 16:20, 16:22; and the book of the Acts of the Apostles, where he narrates how the first Christians “ate their food with joy.” The Pope says that, sadly, some Christians seem to have lost this meaning of joy, as a result of allowing themselves to be influenced by difficulties. He comments that the temptation to lose our joy can be hidden under excuses and complaints, “as if we could only be happy if a thousand conditions were met,” however, the Pope says that many times it is the people who have the least that show immense joy and a great sense of celebration. The reason for joy is in the encounter with the person who gives a new horizon to life, in the words of Pope Benedict XVI, and with it a decisive direction. The encounter with Jesus rescues us from our “self-referencing,” that is, from somehow thinking and acting as if the world revolved around us. The Pope concludes the first part of the Exhortation by saying, “We become fully human when we become more human, when we let God bring us beyond ourselves in order to attain the fullest, truth of our being. Here is where we find the source of our evangelization efforts. For if we have received the love which restores meaning to our lives, how can we fail to share that love with others?’

EXHORTACIÓN APOSTÓLICA LA ALEGRÍA DEL

EVANGELIO Comienza la exhortación del Papa Francisco con una reflexión sobre la sociedad moderna que, buscando placeres y bienes de consumo, a veces pierde de vista lo importante y se cierra sobre si misma, sin espacio ya para los demás o para los pobres. Asegura que tal manera de vivir sólo conduce a la tristeza. Frente a esto, está la invitación a encontrarse o reencontrarse con Jesucristo, que es el único que puede devolver la alegría y quien da la dignidad otorgada por un amor infinito e inquebrantable. Pasa entonces a considerar algunos de los pasajes del Antiguo Testamento que anuncian la alegría de la salvación, como Isaías 9:12, 12:6, 40:9 y 49:13. Asegura que quizá la invitación mas contagiosa a la alegría es la del profeta Sofonías, que presenta a Dios como centro luminoso de fiesta y alegría que quiere comunicar a su pueblo ese gozo. En el Evangelio también se encuentra la luz gloriosa de Cristo. Cita varios pasajes de Lucas 1:28, 1:41, 1:47, de Juan 3:29, 16:20, 16:22; y del libro de los Hechos de los Apóstoles, donde narra cómo en la primera comunidad “tomaban el alimento con alegría”. Comenta el Papa que, tristemente, algunos cristianos parecen haber perdido ese sentido de la alegría, a causa de dejarse llevar de las dificultades. Asegura que la tentación de perder la alegría se puede esconder bajo excusas y reclamos, “como si debieran darse innumerables condiciones para que sea posible la alegría”. Son, sin embargo, según el Papa, muchas veces las personas que menos tienen las que muestran una alegría inmensa y un gran sentido de fiesta. La razón de la alegría esta en el encuentro con una persona que da nuevo horizonte a la vida, en palabras del Papa Benedicto XVI, y con ello una orientación decisiva. El encuentro con Jesús nos rescata de nuestra “auto-rreferencialidad,” es decir, de alguna manera, pensar y actuar como si el mundo girase a nuestro alrededor. Concluye el Papa Francisco esta primera parte de la Exhortación diciendo: “Llegamos a ser plenamente humanos cuando somos más que humanos, cuando le permitimos a Dios que nos lleve más allá el manantial de la acción evangelizadora. Porque, si alguien ha acogido ese amor que le devuelve el sentido de la vida, ¿cómo puede contener el deseo de comunicarlo a otros?”

Para la reflexión ¿En qué eventos o momentos encuentro la alegría? ¿Dónde estoy buscando mi felicidad? ¿Me siento más feliz cuando estoy más entregado a los demás? ¿De que encerramientos en mi mismo y en mis propias cosas podría o debería tratar de salir hoy? ¿He sentido alguna vez la profunda alegría de haberme encontrado con Jesucristo?
