There are few jobs and limited resources. The news about the

economy can be terribly alarming. A great sense of insecurity

about the future is created when you consider that there is no job

security, that the price of gasoline, food, and everything else con-

tinues to escalate, and that mortgages continue to be at risk. To

live with such insecurity or to be convinced that you do not have

enough can create a mindset of scarcity and lack; such thinking

can prevent us from doing things. Initiatives can be paralyzed

when faced with the insecurity of lacking the necessary resources.

It could clip the wings of many young people who would think that,

because there is no money, they cannot achieve their dreams and

objectives. It could, furthermore, immobilize solidarity and charity:

if there are insufficient resources for everyone, we must save them

for ourselves. Today’s readings present a very different panorama.

In the world of God, everything is abundance. The banquet on the

holy mountain will have the best of everything; the Philippians

community cares for the needs of the other churches; the king set

out a grand banquet where everyone is included. To attend the

feast it is not necessary to be materially rich, have a title or pos-

sess grand properties. What’s more, if these things occupy the

mind and heart, it can impede a person from responding to the call

of the king. If our businesses and caring for properties take up so

much time, then you cannot attend the feast because there isn’t

sufficient time. The only thing needed is good clothes; and what

type of clothing is necessary to attend God’s banquet? Possibly

the clothing of generosity, of expanding the heart and spreading

joy no matter what is happening—the clothing of trust in God and

in the security of his call. To go with shameful concerns, envying

what others have, criticizing what others do, and with a smallness

of heart would probably lead to a closed door and denied access.

To attend with the best disposition of living in the Reign of God, as

he desires, will open all the doors of abundance of His grace, love

and joy, even if we don’t have a single dollar in our pocket.
