coliform bacteria

Coliform or other bacteria in drinking or  swimming water will not necessarily make you

ill. However, since these organisms are

present, other disease-causing organisms

may also be present. Health symptoms

related to drinking or swallowing water

contaminated with bacteria generally rangefrom no ill effects to cramps and diarrhea

(gastrointestinal distress). Fecal coliform

bacteria from a polluted stream. The presence

of fecal coliform bacteria in aquatic

environments indicates that the water has

been contaminated with the fecal material of man or other animals. At the time of

contamination the source water may have

been also contaminated by pathogens or

disease producing bacteria or viruses which

can also exist in fecal material.

E. Coli BacteriaE. coli  is short for Esc heric hia coli -- a bacteria (germ) that

causes severe cramps and diarrhea. E. coli  is a leading cause

of bloody diarrhea. The symptoms are worse in children and

older people, and especially in people who have another

illness. Symptoms start about 7 days after you are infected

with the germ. The first sign is severe abdominal cramps that

start suddenly. After a few hours, watery diarrhea starts. The

diarrhea causes your body to lose fluids and electrolytes

(dehydration). This makes you feel sick and tired. The watery

diarrhea lasts for about a day. Then the diarrhea changes tobright red bloody stools. The infection makes sores in your

intestines, so the stools become bloody. Bloody diarrhea lasts

for 2 to 5 days. You might have 10 or more bowel movements

a day. Some people say their stools are "all blood and no

stool.

Uropathogenic E. coli   (UPEC) is responsible for  approximately 90% of urinary track infection (UTI) seen in

individuals with ordinary anatomy.[15]In ascending infections,

fecal bacteria colonize the urethra and spread up the

Urinary track to the bladder. Because women have a shorter

urethra than men, they are 14-times more likely to suffer from

an ascending UTI.

Polio VirusSize: 0.004- 0.1 micron in diameteris the smallest of the infectious microorganism.

Cryptosporidium (crip-toe-spor-ID-ee-um) is

a protozoan, a single-celled parasite that lives in the

intestines of animals and people. This microscopic

pathogen causes a disease called cryptosporidiosis (crip-

toe-spor-id-ee-0-sis). The dormant (inactive) form of Crypt os por idium , called an oocyst (0-o-sist), is excreted

in the feces (stool) of infected humans and animals. The

tough-walled oocysts survive under a wide range of

environmental conditions.

Giardia lambliainfection can occur through ingestion of dormant

cysts in contaminated water, food, or by the fecal-oral

route (through poor hygiene practices). The Giardia

cyst can survive for weeks to months in cold water [

Salmonella

Typhoid fever is an acute illness associated

with fever caused by the Salmonella typhi

bacteria. It can also be caused by Salmonell a par atyphi , a related bacterium that usually

causes a less severe illness. The bacteria

are deposited in water or food by a human

carrier and are then spread to other people in

the area. T yphoid Fever occurs when some

of the Salmonella organisms are not killed bythe normal human immune defenses

(macrophage cells). Salmonella then survive

and grow in the human spleen, liver, and

other organs and may reach the blood

(bactermia). Salmonella can be shed from

the liver to the gallbladder, where they cancontinue to survive and be secreted into the

patient's feces for up to a year.

Salmonellosis (gastroenteritis)characterized

by nausea, vomiting and diarrhea) is the

most common disease caused by the

organisms.

There are many species in this genus.

They are very difficult to tell apart.

Amoebas, like all protists, are single-celled organisms. Cellsare the building blocks for all life forms. "Single-celled" means

that amoebas have only one cell for their entire body. A human

body has more cells than you can count.

The inside of an amoeba is a jelly-like fluid called cytoplasm.

Bits of food and other materials float around in the protoplasm.

Amoebas are so tiny that you need a microscope to see them. They live in water, including lakes, ponds, streams, rivers, and

puddles. Some can even live in the bodies of animals.

Amoebas eat algae, bacteria, other protozoans, and tiny

particles of dead plant or animal matter.

They spend most of their time attached to the bottom or toplants. Sometimes they float freely in the water. They do this as

a "swarm." All the amoebas of the same species will unattach

from the bottom or plants and float around until they land in a

new place and re-attach.

Animals that eat amoeba include plankton feeders, such as

mussels and water fleas.

Reverse Osmosis?

8/9/2019 ROasis Presentation 1 Bert Leal

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/roasis-presentation-1-bert-leal 16/43

WHAT IS REVERSE OSMOSIS?

́Anyone who has been through a high schoolscience class will likely be familiar with theterm osmosis. The process was firstdescribed by a French Scientist in 1748, whonoted that water spontaneously diffusedthrough a pig bladder membrane into alcohol.Over 200 years later, a modification of thisprocess known as reverse osmosis allows

people throughout the world to affordablyconvert undesirable water into water that isvirtually free of health or aestheticcontaminants.

8/9/2019 ROasis Presentation 1 Bert Leal

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/roasis-presentation-1-bert-leal 17/43

Reverse osmosis -uses a membrane that is semi-permeable,

allowing pure water to pass through it, while rejecting the contaminants

that are too large to pass through the tiny pores in the membrane.

Quality reverse osmosis systems use a process known as crossflow to

allow the membrane to continually clean itself. As some of the fluidpasses through the membrane the rest continues downstream, sweeping

the rejected contaminants away from the membrane and down the drain.

The process of reverse osmosis requires a driving force to push the fluid

through the membrane (the pressure provided by a standard residential

water system is sufficient 20- 40 psi+).

 ADVANTAGES OF HAVING

YOUR OWN ROASIS

You are sure about the quality of

water that you are drinking

Water with very low TDS (dissolved

minerals) get assimilated or digested easily

in the body compared to high mineral

content water.

Drinks like juice, coffee, tea and other mixed

drinks would taste better because Chlorine

and other minerals tend to alter the taste.

No more hassle stockinggallons of water in your

storage

Removes a wide range of contaminants with little power

consumption

You have a clean, clear &

Media Filtration

When two or more kind of media is mixed together in

a tank, this is called Multi-media.

This type of filters offers a bigger capacity to accept

particles such as sand, mud and silts as compared to a

cartridge type filter.

It has removal rating of 100 micron down to 5 micron

because the media is arranged in a way that the biggest

and lightest particle is on top and the smallest and the

heaviest media is on the bottom part of the tank

WHOLE HOUSE WATER

TREATMENT

Activated Carbon Filtration

Its called the Work Force of water treatment

because it can remove taste, odor and color.

This can also remove organic contaminants that

contains living cells

GAC is made of granules / carbon fines /

powdery particles of carbon, this can accept

more contaminants than a solid block of

carbon or carbon cartridges

Lower the Turbidity of water and can handle bigger

volume of dirt. Clarifies the water.

Will give your household unlimited benefits of clean &clear water with low maintenance and consumable

because media does not have to be replaced regularly

but backwashing is important so the media will not be

 packed solid.

This can act as pretreatment on various water treatment

devices for your commercial & household use.

WHOLE HOUSE WATER

TREATMENT

Water Softener

A pressured water treatment device in which

hard water is passed through a bed of resin

for the purpose of exchanging hard water

molecules to a much accepted molecules of

soft water.

These resin losses it¶s ability (power) to

exchange the hard water to soft water so

regeneration or re-charging is done by

introducing brine (salt) to the resin

8/9/2019 ROasis Presentation 1 Bert Leal

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/roasis-presentation-1-bert-leal 38/43

HOW DOES WATER SOFTENER WORKS?Step 1. The body of a water softener is a tank filled

with resin beads. These beads are covered with

sodium ions. As hard water passes through, the resinbeads act like a magnet, attracting the calcium and

magnesium ions (hardness) in exchange for the

sodium ions.

Step 2. Eventually the resin beads becomes saturated

with minerals ions and have to be ³re-charged.´ This

process is called regeneration, and is conducted by thecontrol valve on the top of the tank. The control valve is

the brain of the system.

Step 3. During regeneration, a strong brine solution is

flushed through the resin tank, bathing the resin beads in

a stream of sodium ions which replace the accumulatedcalcium & magnesium ions (hardness)

S Step 4. The brine solution, carrying the displaced

calcium and magnesium ions is then flushed down the

drain by fresh water. The regenerated resin beads can

be used again and again

Chemical Disinfection

Chlorine, Custic Soda, Hydrogen Peroxide

A traditional way of disinfecting water

through addition of chemicals to kill

bacteria. This effective method uses

A small pump that delivers the chemical

inside the tank in small, controlledquantity. This kind of sterilization is still

used because of it¶s residual or

³clinging´Action of chemical. The

problem is the by-products produced bythe chemicals is known to cause cancer.
