LA HISTORIA

El 17- sept. la bahía de Ensenada fue descubier ta por Juan Rodrí-guez Cabrillo, nombrándola San Mateo. El capitán se encontraba al servicio de la Corona Española.

On Sept 17 the Ensenada bay was discovered by Juan Rodr iguez Cabrillo, who named it San Mateo. The captain was under the com-mand of the Spanish Crown.

E l 2 de nov iembre e l cap i tán Sebastián Vízcaíno le dio el nom-bre de Ensenada de Todos los Santos, pero a partir de 1900 sólo se llama Ensenada.

On Nov. 2nd Captain Sebastian Vizcaino, renamed it “Ensenada de Todos los Santos”, but af ter 1900 it remained by the name of “Ensenada”.

Antes de la Colonia, habitaban la región las etnias Cochimí, Kumiai, Pai Pai, kiliwa, que se ubicaron en la Sierra de San Pedro Mártir, y los Cucapás quienes habitaron las riberas del Río Colorado.

Before colonization, the place was inhabited by different ethnic groups: the Cochimi, Kumiai, Pai Pai, and Kiliwa, who were located in San Pedro Martir, and the Cucapas who inhabited the Colorado river basin.

Se descubrió oro en San Rafael, fundándose Real del Castillo. Hoy, Ensenada es capital del vino en México y tiene la mayor cantidad de científicos per cápita en el país.

Se fundó Bodegas Santo Tomás, la más antigua y una de las más importantes productoras de vino en el municipio y el país.

Hay ciudades que tienen la vocación de responder a cual-quier deseo, y hasta capricho, al vacacionar, hacer nego-cios, invertir o vivir; es el caso de Ensenada (ubicada en la

costa del Pacífico, en Baja California), que además de sus atractivos naturales y facilidades para el turista, tiene a su favor la invaluable hos-pitalidad de su gente.

Todo viaje tiene un principio y un fin, y en el caso de esta ciudad el punto de partida son sus calles, donde convergen algunos de sus más emblemáticos sitios. La Terminal de Cruceros es un claro ejem-plo, cada año llegan ahí más de 200 embarcaciones procedentes de Los Ángeles, Hawai y muchos otros sitios.

Otra forma de llegar por mar a Ensenada es en yate. Estas embar-caciones, tanto para pasear como para pescar, disponen de cuatro marinas, con capacidad para albergar más de 800 yates.

Las opciones para consentir a los visitantes se viven desde el arribo al puerto. Además de caminar por el malecón, hay que aprove-char las mañanas cálidas para dirigirse al boulevard costero Lázaro Cárdenas, donde aparecen los primeros monumentos representati-vos: la Plaza Cívica, con sus efigies de personajes históricos, y la ban-dera monumental de México, con sus 50 metros de altura.

Para llevarse un recuerdo cultural, lo mejor es visitar alguno de sus recintos, como el Centro Estatal de las Artes de Ensenada (CEARTE), el Museo Histórico Regional o la Antigua Aduana Marítima.

Para revivir el pasado glamoroso de la ciudad, hay que dirigirse al Centro Social, Cívico y Cultural Riviera, declarado por las Juventu-des de la ONU como Patrimonio Histórico de Baja California . En un tiempo se jugaron enormes fortunas en su casino; hoy se realizan ahí grandes eventos sociales, culturales y científicos.

fornia) is the example of this perfect city, not only does it offer its natu-ral attractions, and its great opportunities for tourists, but all these come hand in hand with the invaluable hospitality of its people.

Every trip has a beginning and an end, and in this city the point of departure are its streets, where some of its most emblematic sites con-verge. The cruise terminal is a clear example; each year more than 200 boats arrive from Los Angeles, Hawaii and all different locations in the world.

Another way to arrive to Ensenada is by sea, using a yacht. Ensenada’s seafronts, serve to fish as well as to travel, are equipped with four marines, each one with the capacity to store more than 800 yachts.

The opportunities to pamper visitors are experienced from the moment of arrival. Apart from walking through its jetties, one must take advantage of the beautiful mountains that make the way to the Coastal Boulevard Lazaro Cardenas, where the first representative monuments appeared: the Civic Plaza with its effigies of historical characters, and the 50-meter high monumental Mexican flag.

The best option to look for cultural souvenirs is visiting some of its pre-mises like the State Centre of Ensenada Arts (CEARTE), the Historical Regional Museum, or the Old Marine Customs office.

To revive the city’s glamorous past, you have to go to the Social Cen-tre. The Cultural and Civic Riviera, has been declared as a historical Baja California ground by the U.N. youth of today. At one time exciting betting games took place there, with enormous fortunes at stake, nowadays-great social, cultural or scientific events are held there.

In the 1930s the Hotel Playa lodged celebrities like Dolores Del Rio and Lupe Velez. By the end of 1940, the hotel was run by the famous

El edificio en sí mismo es una muestra de arte, con sus ventanales y puerta tipo mudé-jar, sus techos de cedro traído de Florida y decorados por el pincel del maestro Alfredo Ramos Martínez, sus hermosos jardines y el toque de actualidad: un teatro al aire libre con capacidad para 600 personas.

No es posible retirarse del lugar sin antes visitar el bar Andaluz, donde se asegura fue creado el famoso cóctel Margarita en honor a Marjorie King Plat, dueña en ese entonces del hotel.

Otro punto indiscutible de la agenda es La Bufadora, a 35 km al Sur, donde pareciera que las rocas bufan. El maravilloso fenó-meno natural es provocado por una cavidad en la base del acantilado, que al llenarse de agua provoca una presión tal que expulsa el líquido con gran fuerza, tanto, que el chorro puede subir más de 20 metros.

Lo infaltable

Ensenada tiene una amplia oferta para diversión, hospedaje en sitios de la más alta categoría y compras. La Calle Primera es esencial para llevarse desde una artesanía o un recuerdo, hasta una joya realizada con perlas naturales de Baja California. Ahí se concentra lo mejor del shooping, además de pintorescos cafés al aire libre.

Another incredible place to visit is La Bufa-dora, it is 35 km south of Ensenada. This is the place where the rocks appear to snort. This beautiful natural phenomenon is created by a huge crevasse at the base of the cliff. When this crevasse gets filled with water it creates such an intense pressure, causing the water to be relea-sed with such force, therefore creating a natu-ral water spring. This spring can reach as high as 20 meters.

The must not forget spots

Ensenada has a wide variety of attractions, lodging in some of the highest quality places and stores. The Calle Primera is the best place to look for artsy souvenirs, or even beautiful jewelry done with natural occurring pearl sto-nes from Baja California. This street holds the biggest concentration of incredible stores and interesting cafes in the open air.

Entre hoteles y restaurantes se asoma el puente Bicentenario de la Independen-cia, una muestra de la infraestructura que se construye hoy en Ensenada. Debes visitar su andador turístico y mirador.

Entrada la noche, hay que disfrutar la vida nocturna. La infaltable en la lista es la Cantina Hussong’s, la más antigua de Baja California y favorita de lugareños y visitantes. Papas & Beer es una opción para pasar un buen rato en un video-bar. Y para bailar, Mango Mango es de los más visitados.

Son el corazón, la parte medular de Ensenada, y su origen se remonta al siglo XVII, cuando misioneros jesuitas plantaron las primeras vides en Baja Cali-

fornia. Hoy los asombrosos viñedos –custodiados por sie-rras y valles– enmarcan en forma colorida lo que se conoce como Ruta del Vino.

Ensenada produce más de 90% del vino en México, ahí se ubican desde pequeñas vinícolas familiares hasta grandes productores. Existen más de 50 viñedos registra-dos y más de 150 etiquetas diferentes en el lugar, lo que le ha valido el sobrenombre de Capital del Vino Mexicano. La altitud y humedad del clima, inherentes a este munici-pio, hacen de la zona una tierra fértil y de gran calidad para el cultivo de uvas Chenin Blanc, Colombard, Sauvignon Blanc y Chardonnay, en el caso de vino blanco, al igual que Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Grenache, Nebbiolo y Zinfan-del, entre otras, para los tintos.

El alma de un paseo por la Ruta del Vino está en los pai-sajes del Valle de Guadalupe y San Antonio de las Minas, y más al Sur, en Ojos Negros y los valles que conforman la Antigua Ruta del Vino: Santo Tomás, San Vicente, Uruapan. En todos los puntos que la conforman se puede probar una exquisita reserva.

Camina y prueba

Para empezar, el visitante puede dirigirse a alguna de las pequeñas productoras ar tesanales, como La Casa Vieja, que cuentan con su propia producción y dan breves recorridos y degustaciones.

Ese puede ser el punto de partida, pero para conocer las entrañas de la producción, se sugiere tomar los tours de alguna de las vitivinícolas –o todos, si se puede–, ubicadas en el Valle de Guadalupe, Santo Tomás y Ojos Negros, y que han colocado a México en el mapa internacional.

En L.A Cetto de Valle de Guadalupe se puede observar el proceso de la elaboración de sus vinos jóvenes, con un máximo de añejamiento de 20 meses, y en los que la esen-cia de la fruta tiene el toque de madera proporcionado por los barriles de roble francés, americano o yugoslavo.

One could say that the heart, the back bone of Ensenada are its vineyards, planted in the 17th century by Jesuits missionaries, who harvested the first vines in Baja Cali-

fornia. Today the amazing vineyards surrounded by mountains and villages, frame in a colourful manner what is known as “The Wine Route”.

Ensenada produces more than 90% of wine in Mexico. It has everything from small local wine houses to big wine manufactu-rers. There are more than 50 registered vineyards, and more than 150 different brands in the place. This has entitled Ensenada to become: The Capital of Mexican Wine. The altitude and humid cli-mate, inherent in this region, make it a very fertile soil and of great quality for the Chenin Blanc, Colombard, Sauvignon Blanc, and Chardonnay grape harvest. It also works with white whine, and red wine, like: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Grenache, Nebbiolo and Zinfandel, among others.

The real soul of the wine tour is hidden in the Valle de Guada-lupe and San Antonio de la Minas, and even further south it exists at Ojos Negros, and the valleys that conform the Old Wine Route. These valleys are Santo Tomas, San Vicente, and Uruapan. In every point of this tour you can have an exquisite taste from its high quality reserve.

Walk and taste

To begin with, visitors can go to any wine producer, like La Casa Vieja (The Old House) that has its own products and offers short tours and tastings.

This can be the point of departure, but to really get to know the inner workings of the wine production, it is advised to take tours on some of the vineyards. They are located in the Valle de Guada-lupe, Santo Tomas and Ojos Negros, which have placed Mexico in the eyes of the international market.

At L.A. Cetto, in the Valle de Guadalupe you can witness the entire process of its young wine production, with a maximum maturity of 20 months, and those in which the essence of the fruit has the wooden touch, given by the barrels made of French, Ame-rican or Yugoslavic oak.

Its gardens and picnic areas are like front row tickets to one of the most amazing shows given by Mother Nature: the intense, beautiful and colourful Ensenada sunsets.

A lot of Monte Xanic’s lovers are drawn to its amazing tasting rooms, in search of “jewels” like El Gran Ricardo, among other wines originated in this same Mexican firm.

Domecq posee una de las cavas más grandes del Valle; sus túneles guardan piezas de museo como una encorchadora manual y un molino mecánico del siglo XVI ó XVII, además de cosechas desde los años 70. Cada paso.. la fermentación, el añejamiento y el embotellado, es narrado, incluso con videos, y al final de la visita puede probar el suave y ligeramente espe-ciado Château Domecq.

Este Valle también tiene su “toque de ángel”, el cual está en Adobe Gua-dalupe, una vitivinícola boutique que tras el tour invita a catar sus mezclas de varietales y reconocer la uva que predomina en sus tintos y un rosado. Amor a primera vista

Durante las tres primeras sema-nas de ese mes, los amantes del vino par ticipan en eventos organizados por más de 30 casas vinícolas, en los viñedos y bodegas. Por ejemplo, la ‘Verbena Popular’, organizada por Bodegas de Santo Tomás y en la que participa la mayoría de las firmas viti-vinícolas de la región. A lo largo de la avenida Miramar se instalan pequeños locales donde los restaurantes atien-den al visitante, quien puede acompa-ñar su experiencia culinaria con activi-dades culturales como espectáculos de danza y conciertos musicales.

La Fiesta de la Vendimia alude al paladar y a los sentidos; además de degustar más de 100 diferentes eti-quetas y recorrer los viñedos, se hace presente la gastronomía regional. In February, the Carnival starts with “the burning of bad moods”. Great parades, with customized cars, dances, gastrono-mic events, and activities related to wine, are presented. This great event, coupled with the enjoyment of the people, makes the carnival a memorable moment.

Septiembre. Feria Internacional del Pescado y el Marisco: chefs de la ciudad ofrecen en sus restaurantes delicias culi-narias con base en estos alimentos y par-ticipan en concursos gastronómicos.

Behind each culinary experience lies the chef’s passion. With great internatio-nal recognition: Benito Molina, owner of the Manzanilla restaurant has been named

“Baja Mediterranean Cuisine pioneer” by "Gourmet magazine" in the United States.

There are other chefs, that seduce the palates by rethinking simplicity: like mixing different foods that allow the visitor to dis-cover each flavour on his own accord, the-refore learning how to create a mix of a local dish and wine.

Ya en la zona, lo mejor es darse una vuelta por La Cocedora de Lan-gosta, restaurante-pescadería que nació con un respaldo de gran tradi-ción, y probar su delicioso Ceviche Compadre Especial.

Pero las sorpresas no terminan ahí, Ensenada también tiene la única cava de quesos en América Latina, en el valle de San Rafael, en Real del Casti-llo; su dueño es Marcelo Castro.

La Cava de Marcelo sorprende al visitante con su tecnología de punta, proveniente de Italia.

Estos quesos se preparan sólo con sal, el lácteo y el cuajo, ingredientes de todo queso casero. Pero en la cava se pueden encontrar delicias como el Ramonetti Añejo, de sabor suave, cremoso, con un tono final ácido muy tenue, exquisito para acompañar con pan y mermelada.

Es casi un deber quedarse en su sala de degustación para disfrutar de otras especialidades en la cava y tomar una copa de vino, e incluso participar con la familia de un reco-rrido guiado, para escuchar, de voz de Marcelo o alguno de sus guías, las historias detrás del fino sabor de sus quesos.

Las actividades deportivas son una atractiva carta de presentación de Ensenada: carreras off-road, pesca, paseos ciclistas, regata, kayac, snorkeling y buceo,

son algunas de las opciones a elegir y, lo mejor: se reali-zan en verdaderos santuarios de la naturaleza.

Ejemplo de estos deportes, que gozan de gran recono-cimiento internacional, es la carrera conocida como “Baja 1000”, una de las competencias off-road más famosas en el mundo, después del París-Dakar. Se realiza en noviem-bre, comienza en Ensenada y generalmente termina en La Paz, Baja California Sur. El recorrido debe completarse en aproximadamente 30 horas y rebasa los 1,600 km, a través de diversos escenarios naturales.

Los participantes se clasifican en cuatro categorías: automóviles, motocicletas, camionetas pick-up y vehícu-los tipo todo terreno. Comenzó en la década de los 60 y a la fecha esta carrera ha tenido entre sus filas a grandes figuras, como Parnelli Jones –piloto Indi en los 70–, el actor Steve McQueen, John Clark Gable jr. y Mark Thatcher, hijo de Margaret Thatcher.

The sport activities are an attractive way of presenting Ense-nada to travellers. There are off road races, fishing, moun-tain biking, kayaking, snorkelling and scuba diving. The

best part is that all this activities are done in Ensenada’s, true natu-ral, beautiful sanctuaries.

An example of one of this great internationally recognized sport is the race known as “Baja 1000”. This race is one of the most famous off road competitions in the world, after Dakar, which is held in Paris. It happens in November, and it starts in Ensenada, it generally finishes in La Paz, Baja California Sur. The path must be completed in approximately 30 hours and it goes over 1600km, through the diverse natural Ensenada sceneries.

The participants get divided into 4 categories, automobiles, motorcycles, pick up trucks and all terrain type vehicles. It began back in the 60s, and great figures have been a part of it. Among these great figures are: Parnelli Jones- indi pilot from the 70s-, Actor Steven McQueen, John Clark Gable Jr. and Mark Thatcher, Margaret’s Thatcher son.

There is another race similar to “Baja 1000”, ca l led “Baja 500” which opera-tes under the same format. Pilots from at least 16 dif ferent countries participate in this race. Among them are New Zealand, Canada, Italy, France, Austria, Spain, The United states and Mexico.

The participants must travel 500 miles in approximately 14 hours. Throughout the race, they cross mountains, valleys, deser ts, and beaches. In th is race we have had great names participate like Ivan Stewart and Larry Ragland.

If we talk about a different kind of race: the Sailing races, Ensenada is a “must do” since the traditional “International Regata Newport Beach Ensenada” is always held here in April.

This event is regarded as the most important Regatta race for being the big-gest journey of its kind. More than 500 sail-boats take off from New Port Beach, Cali-fornia, towards the Ensenada port.

Since 1947 the National Sailor Asso-ciation has developed this kind of aquatic encounter. It started as a sailing race orga-nized for af icionados that were coming back from world war two. Celebrities like the Pulitzer Prize winner, Pat Conrad have participated in it.

Los inscritos deben recorrer 500 millas, por aproximadamente 14 horas, en las que cruzan montes, valles, desierto y playa ensenadenses. En ella también han participado grandes del volante como Ivan Stewart y Larry Ragland.

Cuando se piensa en competencia de veleros, Ensenada es un referente obligado, por su tradición respecto a la Regata Internacional Newpor t Beach-Ensenada, que se lleva a cabo en abril.

Este evento es conocido como el más importante en regatas, por ser la travesía más grande de su tipo. Más de 500 veleros zarpan de New Port Beach, California, en Estados Unidos, al puerto de Ensenada.

Desde 1947, la Asociación Nacio-nal de Navegantes desarrol la este encuentro acuático, que inició como una carrera de veleo organizada para los aficionados a este depor te que regresaban de la segunda guerra mundial. Celebridades como el pre-mio Pulitzer, Pat Conrad, han partici-pado en ella.

El Paseo cicl ista Rosari to-Ense-nada, que se organiza en abril y sep-tiembre, es otro de los eventos que mayor número de visitantes atrae a la ciudad. En esta actividad partici-pan más de 10 mil ciclistas de todas las edades.

Generalmente la carrera empieza en la mañana en Playas de Rosarito y termina en el área de Ventana al Mar, junto a la Bandera Monumental de la ciudad de Ensenada. La Ruta a seguir es la carretera l ibre Rosarito-Ense-nada, que ofrece interesantes retos para los participantes y espléndidas vistas de valles y del Océano Pacífico.

place from Rosarito to Ensenada, organi-zed in April and September. This event also attracts a big number of tourists. Over 10 thousand cyclists participate in this event.

Generally the race star ts in the mor-ning, at Rosarito’s beach and ends in the Ventana Mar area, next to the city’s monu-mental Flag.

The route to follow of fers interesting challenges for the participants, and splen-did v iews of the Paci f ic Ocean and i ts valleys.

At the Sea

Ecosystems appreciation is one of the advantages that Ensenada beaches offer. For those fishing aficionados, summer is the per fect t ime to embark on a marine exploration.

This expedition can be done in different places, for example at the Todos Santos island where fish such as sea bass, halibut and mackerel can be found. Very few places are as rich in their flora and fauna as is the

“Bahia de los Angeles”. Its emerald colour waters are ideal for kayaking, and also to fish yellow tale tuna, drums, groupers, fla-tfish, blue spotted tuna and dorado. If you are lucky enough in one of your visits you might spot a whale shark that, contrary to popular belief is a very docile animal.

Apart from all these amazing features, Bahia de los Angeles has the largest most impor tant population of pelicans of the Gulf of California. You can also find the first Center of Study and Conservation of Sea Turtles, in north western Mexico.

At the embankment of the Ensenada port, sport marline fishing is offered, mac-kerel and grunts, among other species that are predominant between April and November. At the Coral and Marina Hotel, located at the scenic Tijuana-Ensenada highway complete packages are offered that include gear, transpor tation, and a tour guide.

It is a fact that Esenada serves as either an adrenalin booster or a place to harness your inner relaxation. Ensenada is the per-fect destination for different kinds of sports.

Pocos espacios geográf icos en el Golfo de California son tan ricos en flora y fauna como Bahía de los Ángeles, sus aguas de color esme-ralda son ideales para hacer kayac y para pescar atún cola amarilla, cor-vina, mero, pez gallo, pez vela, mar-lín y dorado. En una de las visitas, si la suerte lo acompaña, puede ver un tiburón ballena, que lejos de lo que pudiera pensarse, es inofensivo.

Por si fuera poco, en Bahía de los Ángeles está la población de pelicano más importante del Golfo de Califor-nia y ahí se localiza el primer Centro para el Estudio y la Conservación de las Tortugas Marinas del noroeste de México.

En el muelle del puer to de Ense-nada se ofrecen servicios comple-tos para la pesca deportiva del pez picudo (también para tours de avis-tamiento de ballenas y paseos por la bahía), macarela y roncador, entre otras especies que abundan en los meses de abri l a noviembre. Un tesoro en cada rincón

A stay in Ensenada wouldn´t be complete without spending some time to get to know its cultural offerings: museums, cave paintings and Missions built by the Jesuits, Francis-

cans and Dominicans from the end of the 17th century to the 19th century.

By these times a chain of 18 fortresses were part of the Royal Missionary Road (Camino Real Misionero). Nowadays you can start your tour in Tijuana by taking federal highway no.1 and 45 kms. after that you will find El Descanso Mission.

Misión de San Francisco Borja Adac

The Mission still preserves its original clay tiles floor, as well as its adobe thick walls.

Another interesting spot in the Camino Real Misionero is the Mission of Our Lady of Guadalupe in the famous Valle de Gua-dalupe. Unfortunately, only some traces of the original building remain.

Near this Mission the Russian Commu-nity Museum shows another interesting chapter in Ensenada´s history: the Russian influence in the region.

Ninety kms. South you will find the San Vicente Ferrer Mission founded in 1780 by the Dominicans, being the largest Domi-nican mission. It was the duty the military center to repel the attacks of the indige-nous population.

The San Francisco Borja Adac mis-sion, founded in 1762 is a Jesuit testimony of their presence in the Cochimi Indians region.

Deep south of Ensenada you will find the Saint Gertrudis mission built in 1751 and known by its vast vineyards. To this day you can admire parts of its rooms, and its church, which has the bell tower separated from the main temple.

For those interested in the ethnic his-tory of Ensenada the best place to visit is the INAH Community Museum of History in the Valle de Guadalupe, where there are examples of legitimate Kumiai instruments, clothing, and crafts of the time. They also posses different original items from other ethnic groups.

Cave Paintings

An important amount of cave paintings can be found between the Valley of Guada-lupe and the Bay of los Angeles.

By taking the highway Ensenada-La Paz you will arrive to Cataviña, a small resort where you can see human-like paintings of different sizes.

Montevideo, 13 kms. from the San Fran-cisco Borja Mission, you will find impres-s i ve examples of abst rac t , f igura t i ve paintings.

Some other examples of these pain-tings can be found in Las Pintas, El Rosa-rio and in Valle de los Cirios.

These are just some examples of caves found along al l the terr i tory. Ensenada municipality is a very “big gallery” worth visiting.

San Vicente Ferrer, a 90 km al Sur de la ciudad de Ensenada es la misión dominica más grande. Desde su fun-dación fue el centro militar que repelía los ataques de diversos grupos.

Un testimonio jesuita es la misión de San Francisco Borja Adac, fun-dada en 1762, en un importante asen-tamiento de la etnia Cochimí.

Muy al Sur de Ensenada, está la misión jesuita de Santa Gertrudis, que llegó a tener una vasta producción de vid. A la fecha se puede admirar parte de habitaciones y su iglesia, cuyo campanario está separado del templo.

Pa ra los in te resados en h is to -ria étnica, el mejor sitio es el Museo Histórico Comunitario INAH –en el Valle de Guadalupe–, donde se tie-nen ejemplos de instrumentos origi-nales, vestimenta y artesanía de los Kumiai, entre otras etnias que habita-ron la región antes que los españoles.

Pintura rupestre

Entre Valle de Guadalupe y Bahía de los Ángeles se ubica un núcleo importante de estas muestras pictóri-cas, en el interior de cuevas.

Por la carretera Ensenada-La Paz, está el parador tur íst ico Cataviña, donde hay pinturas de figuras antro-pomorfas y tamaño variable.

A 13 km de la Misión de San Fran-cisco Borja está Montev ideo, con impresionantes ejemplos rupestres de tipo abstracto figurativo.

Se pueden admirar estos testimo-nios, también, en Las Pintas –El Rosa-rio– y en el Valle de los Cirios.

Estos son sólo algunos ejemplos, pero a lo largo y ancho del munici-pio hay cuevas con vestigios por des-cubrir. Todo Ensenada es una “gran galería” que visitar.

Escape a la naturaleza

Como salida de la imaginación de un escritor de aventuras, las rutas por la Sierra de Juárez y por San Pedro Mártir, le destina al turista una de las

más sorprendentes panorámicas. Definitivamente son una visita obligada para los aficionados de actividades al aire libre, como escalada, bicicleta de montaña, rappel y espeleología.

San Pedro Mártir, a 250 km al Sur de la ciudad de Ense-nada, es un macizo granítico cubierto por un bosque de pinos, ideal si lo que se busca es vivir la adrenalina de los deportes de aventura. Sus desniveles topográficos per-miten practicar rappel, escalada y hacer recorridos en sus cañones, porque tiene formaciones como el Picacho del Diablo, el más alto de la península –3,096 metros sobre el nivel del mar–, así como los desfiladeros del Chorro y Toledo, sólo por mencionar algunos de los más profundos.

Esos recorridos no son para amateurs, requieren cierta destreza, pero vale la pena contratar un guía en alguna de las operadoras turísticas en Ensenada para visitar de manera segura El Parque Nacional Sierra San Pedro Már-tir, decretado como área natural protegida y que alberga el Observatorio Astronómico Nacional; su acceso está en la carretera transpeninsular, en el tramo Ensenada –San Quintín y en él se puede hacer campismo, montañismo,

mic views. This is a must for open air activities such as hiking, biking, climbing, rappel and speleology.

San Pedro Martir, 250 kms. south of Ensenada is a large gra-nite mole covered by a pine forest ideal for extreme sports such as rappel, climbing and hiking. One can hike through the Picacho del Diablo (Devil s Peak), the highest of Baja peninsula, 3,096 mts. above sea level, as well as exploring the El Chorro and Toledo ravi-nes, just to mention two of the deepest crevasses.

But we warn you, these tours are not for amateurs since they require a certain level of experience and ability so it is highly recom-mended to hire a guide with one of the tour operators in Ensenada to make your trip to San Pedro Martir National Park a safe one. The park is a natural protected area and the National Astronomical Observatory is within its boundaries. Access to the Park is on the trans-peninsular highway at the Ensenada – San Quintin stretch where you can go camping, climbing, or hiking through paths. The most impressive though is the observatory where you can watch all the stars. This observatory is one of the most important ones in Latin America.

San Pedro Mártir es la región más lluviosa de toda la península, con su gran biodiversidad cumple una función ecológica y climática muy importante. En estas montañas, hay ranchos que ofrecen hospedaje, cabañas, espacios para acampar y pistas de avionetas, entre otras facilidades. Existe otro lugar donde la naturaleza de la región también ofrece innumerables rincones para ecoturismo o turismo rural. Se trata del Parque Nacional Constitución de 1857, mejor conocido como Sierra de Juárez. Tomando los pri-meros 38 km de la Carretera Número 3 que va a San Felipe, hasta la población de Ojos Negros, se llega a este sitio.

Aquí el visitante debe andar con cámara fotográfica en mano, sobre todo al llegar a la Laguna Hanson, que tam-bién forma parte del Sistema Nacional de Áreas Protegidas. Está compuesta por dos lagos, formados en una depresión de la roca granítica que conforma la Sierra de Juárez. En el Verano el agua casi desaparece, pero en el Invierno caen fuertes nevadas, congelándose, y el área se convierte en una gran imagen de postal, rodeada de enormes monolitos.

Como es de suponerse, el parque es per fecto para acampar, excursionar y hacer un poco de caminata entre

There is another place where the regional nature also offers innu-merable places for ecotourism to happen. We are talking about the National Constitution Park of 1857, better known as Sierra de Jua-rez. Taking the first 38 km from highway number 3 that goes to San Felipe until the Ojos Negros Population, this is how you get to this destination.

In this place the visitor must have a camera at hand, most recom-mended, when you reach the Hanson Lagoon that is also part of the National System of Protected Areas. It is composed of two lakes. In the summer the water almost disappears, but in the winter this turns into a beautiful scenery, surrounded by lots of whirlpools.

The Park is great for camping, exploring, and to have some nice walks between the pine and oak forests. You can also visit the ran-ches like “Rodeo del Rey y El Alamar”, famous for its great horse rides, that happen twice a year.

Now that you are in the zone, it is advised to make a stop in the “Rancho Pino Colorado”. Get ready to hold your breath before a dreamlike ecosystem, in which interesting projects take place, like the two hectares of harvested grapes, which constitute the first mountain vineyard in the country.

los bosques de encino y pino. También se pueden visitar ranchos como Rodeo del Rey y El Alamar, famoso por las cabalgatas que realiza dos veces al año.

Ya que está en la zona, es recomen-dable hacer una escala en el Rancho Pino Colorado. Prepárese para perder el aliento frente a un ecosistema de ensueño, en el que se desarrollan inte-resantes proyectos, como contar con dos hectáreas sembradas de vid, que constituyen el primer viñedo de mon-taña en el país.

En el parque hay enormes peñas-cos con formas caprichosas, donde habitan encinos, álamos, sauces y ani-males como el emblemático borrego cimarrón, puma, gato montés, venado bura y más de 100 tipos de aves.

Entre ballenas y lobos marinos

Cada año, entre diciembre y abril, la Ballena Gris hace su travesía de los fríos mares de Alaska hacia el Sur, en busca de aguas cálidas en Baja Cali-fornia, para dar a luz a sus crías.

In between whales and sea lions

Each year between December and April, the grey whale makes her journey from the cold Alaskan seas in search of the Baja Cali-fornian warm waters, to be able to give birth to its babies.

The whale sightings are an activity that you have to experience. Generally the tours happen near the “Todos Santos Bay” and here you will also get to know other sea life that inhabits the island. Tours are available between December and April.

Precisely the “Todos Santos Island” is a refuge, to observe sea lions, and about 60 kms south of San Quintin, on the way to El Rosario, lies “La Lobera”. It is a kind of cave where the female sea lions give birth to their babies.

The sea lions are an intrinsic part of the Ensenada coast panorama. So much that at one time the city had its own Pet, and even though it already died, it is remem-bered with care. Its name was Pancho, a sea lion that lived between the dock and the seafood market. The locals relished the opportunity to interact with the local wildlife, and “Pancho” enjoyed the warmth and hos-pitality of the locals.

Precisamente la isla de Todos San-tos es un refugio para ver lobos mari-nos, y a unos 60 kms al Sur de San Quintín, rumbo a El Rosario, está La Lobera, que es una especie de bóveda rocosa a la orilla del mar, donde las hembras tienen a sus crías.

Los lobos marinos son par te del panorama de la costa ensenadense, tanto, que la ciudad tuvo un tiempo su propia mascota y aunque ya murió, se le recuerda con cariño; se llamaba

“Pancho”, era un lobo marino que habi-taba entre el muelle y el mercado de mariscos. Los lugareños gozaban la maravilla de convivir con la fauna sil-vestre y “Pancho” disfrutaba la calidez y hospitalidad sin distingo de los habi-tantes de Ensenada.

para culminar proyectos de atractivo turístico que potenciarán más aun la vocación turística del lugar.

Uno de ellos es la Playa Munici -pal, donde se efectúan algunas de las principales atracciones de la ciudad, como el Carnaval, la Feria de Verano y eventos deportivos.

Es e l lugar por e lección de los ensenadenses para disfrutar con la familia, solos o con amigos, de ahí que en esa área de dos kilómetros de largo se trabaja actualmente en una interesante iniciativa de renovación, que comprende ampliar la playa, crear más espacios recreativos, acceso para automóviles, plazas y locales comerciales, entre otros atractivos.

A unos pasos, cruzando el Boule-vard Costero Lázaro Cárdenas, y justo frente al mar, se observa la avanzada construcción que pronto albergará a El Caracol Museo de Ciencias y Acua-rio, el espacio interactivo más grande de Baja California. Contará con tres salas, una que reúna especies mari-nas originarias de la región; otra dedi-cada a mostrar el origen de Baja Cali-fornia y los recursos naturales con que cuenta y la tercera incluirá información sobre el desarrollo de Ensenada en temas como la astronomía, además

are focused on attracting more tourism to the city.One of them is the Municipal Beach where

some of the city’s main attractions take place, like The Carnival, the summer Fair, and a few spor-ting events.

This is locals favorite place, to have a good time with the family, alone or with friends. There-fore nowadays, an interesting innovative propo-sal is taking place in this 2 km area. The project is comprised of extending the beach to create more recreational spaces, better access for cars, and also to add plazas and local markets, among other attractions.

A few steps away, crossing the coastal boule-vard Lazaro Cardenas, and right in front of the ocean, you can now see the promising cons-truction that will soon be able to hold in its pre-mises: The Aquarium and the Science Museum del Caracol, the biggest amusement space in Baja California. It will have three rooms, one that holds marine species, another one devoted to showing the origins and development of Baja California, regarding themes like: its astronomy, and its natural resources. It will also have an inter-esting tour displaying various interesting facts about the universe and the solar system.

To be in touch with nature, the nearest option will be “The Ecological Canyon Park of Dona Petra” one of the largest Northeastern regions that is filled with trees. This space will be used for recreational; activities like sports, walkways, bicycling etc.

The local government, is working and tea-ching its inhabitants to preserve the green areas. This is why there will be a new botanical Garden and an Open Air Theater.

Near La Bufadora in “Punta Brava” golf fans are getting excited, because the first golf course designed by Tiger Woods is being created. The course will be right at the tip of Ensenada Bay. This development will also include residential houses, villas and a hotel.

The former Golf Champion of the world Greg Norman also laid his eyes in this place to deve-lop a golf club, at Bajamar, which will allow the desire for the realization of international tourna-ments to increase.

Ensenada is betting upon all this new pro-jects, to complement its vast opportunities and experience for tourists, which has started to place Ensenada’s fait as on the best ones in the world.

Cerca de La Bufadora, en Punta Brava, se trabaja en un gran atractivo para los aficionados al golf. Se trata del primer campo diseñado por Tiger Woods, el cual estará justo en la punta de la bahía de Ensenada. El desarro-llo también tendrá lotes residenciales, villas y un hotel.

El ex campeón mundial de gol f Greg Norman también puso su mirada en este municipio para desarrollar un campo de golf, en Bajamar, lo cual permitirá incrementar la realización de torneos de talla internacional.

Ensenada apuesta a todos estos proyectos para complementar su oferta turística, la cual comienza a ubi-car a este destino como uno de los mejores del mundo.
