en el ámbito de la ecología. En entrevista exclusiva, habló de los motivos para conservar la

esperanza en el mañana.

The 20th century’s best-known scientist recently visited Panama to participate in a historic international convention: the First Pan-American Roots & Shoots Conference. The meeting emerged from the movement Goodall created twenty years ago to bring about positive environmental change. In this exclusive interview, she talks about why she is hopeful about the future.

Ella solo sonríe dulcemente y, de pronto, es el mismo Sol que se ha encendido frente a nosotros. Ni un millón de flashes podrían competir con su radiante luz, mientras avanza en un mar de abra-zos, fotos y autógrafos, cual si fuese una suerte de mesías del ecologismo que recorre los confines de la Tierra proponiendo la construcción de un mundo mejor. Es una estrella, qué duda cabe, y a su paso no hay quien pueda resistirse a su encanto.

When Jane Goodall appears, the atmosphere crackles with excitement ex-pressed in shouts, applause, whist-les, and heartfelt

tears. Her sweet smile rivals the sun. Not even continuous camera flashes succeed in dimming her radiant light as she moves through a tangle of fans seeking hugs, photographs, and autographs, treating her like an environmental messiah who travels the globe to build better a world. She is undoubtedly a star, and her charm dazzles everyone in her orbit.

¿Dónde estaba yo que no la había visto antes? Quisiera decirles que sabía todo sobre ella antes de nuestro encuentro, en su última visita a Panamá, pero no me da la cara para mentirles a ustedes que me leen por los aires. Había escuchado sobre sus estudios del comportamiento de los chimpancés en África —cuyos descubrimientos revolucionaron el campo de la ciencia en los años 60— y su empeño en educar y promover estilos de vida más sostenibles; pero no tenía idea de la trascendencia de esta misión, a la que le ha dedicado toda una vida, y del impacto que su obra e ideas han generado en millones de personas alre-dedor del planeta. Y créanme, una cosa es decirlo y otra ser testigo del cariño y la admiración que esa mujer despierta en todo aquel que la rodea.

Why was all of this new to me? I would like to be able to say that I knew all about her before meeting her on her visit to Panama, but I can’t bring myself to lie to you, dear airborne readers. I had heard about her studies of chimpanzee behavior in Africa —the conclusions she reached revolutioni-zed animal science in the 1960s— and her efforts to disseminate and promote more sustainable lifestyles, but I had no idea of the overarching significance of the mission to which she has devoted her entire life or of the impact her work and ideas have had on millions of people around the world. And believe me, hearing about the Goodall phenomenon is entirely different from wit-nessing firsthand the affection and admira-tion this woman awakens in everyone who comes in contact with her.

It was one of Goodall’s most signifi-cant contributions to humanity that brought her to Panama recently. The English primatologist (born April 3, 1934 in London as Valerie Jane Morris Goodall), activist, and above all, the best-known scientist of the 20th century, was here to participate in a historic in-ternational meeting: the First Pan-Ame-rican Roots & Shoots Conference. The movement she created twenty years ago in Tanzania has spread to more than 120 countries; its aim is to bring about positive change for humans, animals, and the environment.

TPParticiparon más de treinta jóvenes de diferen-tes países de Latinoamérica y el Caribe, todos líderes ambientalistas que trabajan en diversos proyectos, programas y fundaciones, incluyen-do la liberación de animales en cautiverio, la protección de especies en peligro de extinción y la educación ambiental. La reunión se llevó a cabo en un escenario inmejorable. Fueron seis lluviosos días acampando en la hermosa selva dentro de la Reserva del Valle Mamoní (10.000 hectáreas de pasto y bosque primario y secundario, a dos horas y media de la Ciudad de Panamá), que es el hogar de increíble flora y fauna. Un lugar de película, donde el verde domina el paisaje, mientras el palpitar de la vida salvaje se mezcla con el canto de la lluvia y la risa de los ríos y las cascadas.

Allí se encuentra el Centro Mamoní, un cam-pus para la formación de la próxima generación de líderes con mentalidad ecológica. Una ini-ciativa de Earth Train, organización interna-cional sin fines de lucro que creó, protege y administra la Reserva de Valle Mamoní, y que junto a Roots & Shoots fueron los responsables de que esta conferencia se realizara en Panamá.

The First Pan-American Roots & Shoots Conference was sponsored by Copa Airlines.

The conference attracted more than thirty young people from several countries in Latin America and the Caribbean. All of them are environmental leaders working for various programs, foundations, and projects focused on environmental themes including the release of captive animals, protecting endangered species, and environmental education. The conference had an incredible setting: partici-pants spent six days camping among the magnifi-cent flora and fauna of the beautiful rainy jungle of the Valle Mamoní Reserve —nearly 25,000 acres of grass and primary and secondary forest two and a half hour from Panama City. It is a dream-like setting of green landscapes, where the pulse of jungle life beats alongside the whisper of rain and the burbling of rivers and waterfalls.

This wonderful site features the Centro Mamo-ní, an educational center for training the next generation of leaders in environmental awareness. The Center is an initiative of Earth Train, an international non-profit organization that created, and now protects and manages, the Reserva de Valle Mamoní. Earth Train, in cooperation with Roots & Shoots, was responsible for bringing this conference to Panama.

Los participantes intercambiaron experiencias de vida, aprendiendo de las dificultades que enfren-tan al impulsar sus respectivos proyectos y cómo han podido superarlas. Discutieron temas pun-tuales como la obtención de fondos y el uso de las redes sociales en la lucha por el medio ambiente, entre otros, bajo la guía de los mentores adultos. También hubo mucha diversión y aventura. Con toda esa naturaleza alrededor, no faltó oportuni-dad para recorrer la reserva. Durante las animadas caminatas al aire libre hubo mucho aprendizaje. Y de noche no faltaron las veladas culturales y las fogatas, que estuvieron llenas de cuentos, anéc-dotas personales y chistes. Momentos realmente mágicos junto al fuego, llenos de alegría y buena vibra, música y rica comida.

The Organization Hombre y Naturaleza: el equilibrio perfecto (Humans and Na-ture: the Perfect Balance)gives conferences and workshops on the envi-ronment.

“Educating young people will lead to great changes in Latin America and the Caribbean. This conference has made us more united. Strengthening our relationships will allow us to reach out to many more people focused on saving the environment and helping communities.”.

Participants exchanged stories, sharing experiences about the problems they face in promoting their projects and how they have managed to overcome these difficulties. Under the guidance of older mentors, the young leaders discussed specific topics like obtaining funding and using social networks to defend the environment. It was not all work though; there was also time for fun and adventu-re. With nature at their doorstep, touring the reserve was easy. The energetic walks were also learning experiences. The night was enlivened by cultural soirées and stories and jokes told around the bonfire, providing magical moments of joy, music, and delicious food.

This setting, filled with tapirs, harpy eagles, howler monkeys, bamboo, rivers, mountains, and mud that oozes everywhe-re, seems a perfect place for the fascinating Dr. Jane Goodall to pass the torch of hope to the young people who surround her, eager to listen, learn, and continue her legacy. Goodall shook the very foundations of biology when she was barely twenty with her discovery that chimpanzees are able to make tools, overturning the prevai-ling idea that humans were the only species with this capability. She was immediately attacked by the ossified scientific hierarchy, who leapt to criticize her unconventional methods as unscientific, and let’s be honest, for being a beautiful woman who made the cover of National Geographic and conquered the world.

EEnérgica y dura cuando habla con convicción sobre sus ideas, suave y dulce cuando alguien viene a ella pidiendo un consejo, cree fielmente que la mejor manera de entregar su mensaje de amor es contando historias. “Cuando era una niña mi sueño era que al ser grande viajaría a África para estudiar los animales y escribir libros sobre ellos. Todo el mundo se reía de mí. Realmente no sabíamos mucho sobre África, le llamábamos el ‘continente oscuro’. La Segunda Guerra Mundial estaba en todo su apogeo y mi familia no tenía dinero alguno. Además yo era una niña; las niñas no sueñan esa clase de cosas. Así que se reían de mí y me decían: ‘Por qué no te olvidas de esa idea y sueñas con algo que realmente puedas alcanzar; deja ya esas tonterías sobre África a un lado’. Pero mi mamá me dijo un día: ‘Si realmente quieres algo, trabajas duro y no te rindes nunca, tú encontrarás una manera de lograr eso que sue-ñas’. Y ese mensaje tan sencillo de mi mamá es el que ha inspirado y movilizado todo este gran movimiento de Roots & Shoots”.

Decisive and firm when she speaks passiona-tely about her ideas, but soft and sweet when someone asks for advice, Goodall believes that the best way to transmit her message of love is by telling stories. “When I was a little girl, my dream was to travel to Africa to study animals and write books about them. Everyone laughed at me. We really didn’t know much about Africa then; we called it the ‘ dark continent.’ This was during the Second World War and my family had no money. I was also a girl and girls did not have those kinds of dreams. So people laughed at me and told me: ‘Forget that idea and dream about something you can do; forget this silliness about Africa.’ But one day my mother said: ‘If you really want something, work hard and never give up; you’ ll find a way to make your dreams come true.’ That simple message from my mother is what inspired me and mobilized this great Roots & Shoots movement.”

At the age of 77, Goodall still has the energy and strength to tour the world promoting Roots & Shoots and warning people that we adults will bequeath our children a ruined planet if we do not stop the devastation in time and adopt sustainable and environ-mentally friendly ways of life. Goodall is unstoppable, untiring, and unbelievable. In her presence, the idea of a better and more just world does not seem so impossible. She is also a charming, captivating, and gracious woman. Jane Goodall, the great figure who inspires and motivates millions of people, takes the time to offer every conference participant an encouraging word and share her playful smile and subtle sense of humor. ¿Cómo haces para mantener encendida la fe y la esperanza, luego de tantos años de trabajo y lucha por la conservación de la vida?Es gracias a los jóvenes. Como puedes ver aquí con estos jóvenes: puedes ver la determinación que tienen, tan llenos de esperanza, energía y compromiso. Bueno, eso es lo que recibo siempre en cada lugar al que voy. Con los grupos de Roots & Shoots organizamos festivales, tene-mos un par de cumbres internacionales, y los escuchas y escuchas sus planes. No solo están hablando, también están haciendo. Roots & Shoots se trata de subirse las mangas y ponerse a trabajar. Hablar, llegar al meollo del problema, descubrir qué es lo que puedes hacer para resol-verlo y si puedes resolverlo, aprender cómo atajar los obstáculos. Seated on a wooden bench deep in the dense Panamanian jungle, I shared a cup of coffee with Dr. Jane Goodall and talked about the future of humanity.

How do you manage to have faith and keep feeling hopeful after so many years of working and fighting to conserve our environment?Young people give me that hope. You can see it in the young people here: they are so determined and so hopeful, energetic, and committed. I see that wherever I go. Through the Roots & Shoots groups, we organize festivals, and hold a couple of international summits where we listen to their plans. These young people are acting, not just talking. Roots & Shoots means rolling up your sleeves and getting to work. You discuss and find the roots of the problem and see what you can do to solve it; if you can indeed solve it, you find a way around the difficulties. And then you must get out, roll up your sleeves and do it. And if you’re wrong, don’t give up; just find another way to do it.

En comparación a como usted lo encontró en la década del 60, cuando arrancó su labor en África, ¿el mundo está realmente tan mal ahora?Sí, está muy mal.

Porque la sensación que uno tiene ahora es que hay mucha información y con-ciencia ecológica, además de mucha gente interesada y trabajando por un planeta mejor. ¿Cree que esto ocurre porque el mundo ha llegado a un punto en el que las cosas están muy mal? Las cosas están muy mal. Cuando veo un niño pequeño, siempre pienso en cómo era el mundo cuando yo tenía esa edad y cómo lo hemos destrozado hasta lle-gar a lo que es ahora. Mira cuántos bosques han desaparecido, cuánta erosión, cuántas especies se han extinguido, cuántas personas mueren de hambre en todo el mundo. Mira lo que ha crecido la población mundial, ya somos siete mil millones y este es un planeta de recursos limitados. No podemos seguir creciendo infini-tamente, porque llegará el momento en que el planeta no podrá sostenernos. Para alimentar a toda esta gente, ya tenemos que hacer grandes cambios.

¿Y qué hay del futuro? Tú trabajas incansablemente para construir un futuro mejor, con la participación de estos jó-venes miembros de Roots & Shoots que te siguen en todo el mundo. Frente a un escenario tan desolador, ¿cómo sientes que será el futuro? Mi esperanza es lograr una masa crítica de gen-te joven. Llegar a un punto de inflexión gracias a jóvenes con una filosofía de vida distinta, que se convertirán en los líderes del mañana. Son

In comparison with the 1960s when you started your work in Africa, is the world really in such bad shape now?Yes, things are ter-rible.

These days it feels like there is so much infor-mation and environmental awareness, and more people are interested in working toward a better world. Do you think that this is happening because the world has reached a point where things are really terrible?

Things are very bad. Whenever I see a small child, I think about what the world was like when I was that age and about how we have decimated the planet to produce what we are left with now. Look how many forests have disap-peared, how much of the ground is eroded, how many species have become extinct, and how many people starve to death around the world. Look how the world population has grown; we now number seven billion on a planet with limited resources. We cannot keep growing indefinitely; there will come a time when the planet cannot sustain us. We already need to make huge changes to feed so many people.

What about the future? You work tirelessly to build a better future with the help of the young members of Roots & Shoots who support you around the world. Given the bleak outlook, what kind of future do we have?My hope is to achieve a critical mass of young people, to reach a turning point thanks to young people with a different philosophy of life, people who will become the leaders of tomorrow. These youngsters are brilliant in all senses of the word,

brillantes en todos los sentidos y se convertirán en los futuros abogados, doctores, maestros y políticos, que a su vez también serán padres. Gente joven que en-tiende que es obvio que necesitamos dinero para vivir, el punto donde nos equivocamos fue cuando empezamos a vivir solo por el dinero. ¿Me explico? Una vez que has cubierto tus necesidades básicas y has guardado un dinerito extra de lo que has ganado, estás bien. No hay necesidad de ser codicioso.

Lo loco y triste es que los adultos también lo saben y entienden.Claro, pero no quieren hacer algo al respecto. A diferencia de los jóvenes, que no solo saben sino que están tomando acciones también. Están haciendo algo para cambiar el rumbo de las cosas. Y ese es un buen motivo para mantener las esperanzas.

¿Qué se siente ser una inspiración para tanta gente alrede-dor del mundo?Trato de no pensar en eso, ¿sabes? Para mí hay dos Janes. Estoy yo, a la que le encanta venir al bosque, hablar con la gente, divertirse y tomar-se un whisky. Y luego está la Jane que se sube a un escenario frente a miles de personas y todas quedan inspiradas. A veces suelo pensar que sus palabras provienen de algún lugar, ¿sabes? No sé, pero necesito hacer esa diferenciación. Si empiezo a pensar en mí en los términos en que los demás piensan en mí, eso sería muy peculiar. ¿Cómo haría para vivir? Y yo sé quién soy. Acepto que tengo este rol y es un don. Es eso: un don.

These young people un-derstand that while we obviously need money to live, it is wrong to live only for money. Do you know what I mean? Once you’ve covered your basic needs and have saved some money, that’s enough. There is no

reason to be greedy.

It’s crazy and sad that adults now already know and understand this.Of course, but they don’t want to do any-thing about it, unlike young people. Young people not only understand, but are willing to do something about it. They are helping shape the future. And that’s a good reason to be hopeful.

How does it feel to be an inspiration to so many people around the world?You know, I try not to think about that. For me, there are two Janes. There is the Jane that loves to go to the forest, talk to people, have fun, and drink whisky. Then there is the Jane that goes on stage in front of thousands of people and inspires others. Sometimes, I think that her words come from somewhere else. I don’t know, but I do know that I need to keep the two separate. It would be very strange if I started to see myself as others do. How could I carry on? I know who I am. I accept that I have a role to play and it is a gift. That’s it: a gift.
