    Mono rail

mono rail is a rail-basedtransportation system based on a

single rail, which acts as its solesupport and its guideway. The term isalso used variously to describe the

beam of the system, or the vehiclestraveling on such a beam or track.

    Advantages and disadvantages:

    Advantages:

The primary advantage of monorails over conventional railsystems is that they require minimal space, both horizontally andvertically. Monorail vehicles are wider than the beam, andmonorail systems are commonly elevated, requiring only aminimal footprint for support pillars.

A monorail track is usually less expensive to build than acomparable elevated conventional rail line of equal capacity.

Due to a smaller footprint, they are seen as more attractive than

conventional elevated rail lines and block only a minimal amountofsky.

Monorail is, by design, a grade-separated system. They do notinterfere with existing transport modes.

    Disadvantages:

Monorail vehicles are not compatible with any other type of railinfrastructure, which makes (for example) through services ontomainline tracks impossible.

Monorail tracks do not easily accommodate at-grade intersections.

In an emergency, passengers may not be able to immediately exitbecause an elevated monorail vehicle is high above ground and not

all systems have emergency walkways. The passengers mustsometimes wait until a rescue train, fire engine or a cherry pickercomes to the rescue. Newer monorail systems resolve this by buildingemergency walkways alongside the entire track, at the expense ofvisual intrusion. Suspended railways resolve this by building aircraft-style evacuation slides into the vehicles. Japanese systems use the

next train to tow broken down trains to the next station, but this hasyet to occur.[citation needed]

Turnouts, especially at high speeds, may be marginally more difficultcompared to conventional railway points, although certainly notimpossible.

    Metro rail

A rapid transit, underground, subway, elevatedrailway, metro ormetropolitan railwaysystem isan electricpassengerrailwayin an urban area with

a high capacity and frequency, andgradeseparation from other traffic.[1][2] Rapid transitsystems are typically located either inunderground tunnels or on elevated rails abovestreet level. Outside urban centers, rapid transitlines may run on grade separated ground leveltracks.

    Advantages:

The Metro Rail System has proved to be the mostefficient in terms of energy consumption, spaceoccupancy and numbers transported Hi-capacity

    carriers

very high volumes of peak hour peak directiontrips Eco-friendlycauses no air pollution, much lessersound pollution Low energy consumption20% perpassenger km in comparison to raod-based systems Greater traffic capacitycarries as much traffic as 7

lanes of bus traffic or 24 lanes of car traffic (either way) Very low ground space occupation2 metres width onlyfor elevated rail Fasterreduces journey time by 50%to 75%

    Disadvantages: Disadvantages:

The higher friction and increased rolling resistance causedisadvantages (compared to steel wheel on steel rail):

    Higher energy consumption

Possibility of tyre blow-outs - not possible in railway wheels. More heat generated

Weather variance. (Applicable only to above-ground installations)

Losing the traction-advantage in inclement weather (snow andice)[2]

Heavier as steel rails remain for switching purposes to provideelectricity to the trains and as a safety backup[3]

    Tyre replacement cost

The biggest disadvantage of metro in is the

land which is used for the train cannot be used

later, land utilization being one of the mostserious problems in the country.

Tunnel: Tunnels is defined as underground

    routes or passages driven through

the ground without disturbing theoverlying soil or rock cover.

  • 8/2/2019 PRESENTATIONRSM AJIT

    14/25

Advantages: Tunnels can shorten the distance - instead of

going over or around a hill or a mountain.

Tunnels can be relativley dry - going under ariver or lake

Tunnels can be of fairly consistanttemperature - may not freeze or be too hot.

Disadvantages of HighTunnels: One of the primary disadvantages of the

more permanent high tunnels is the fact thatthey are not easily moved. Some high tunnelsare engineered to be (and advertised as)easily movable. However, they are typicallynot very easy to move, and many high

tunnels are never moved Another disadvantage of high tunnels is that

they can be destroyed by high winds,

    Proper road design and

parking: Proper road and parking area design is critical

in recreation sites, especially for vehiclestowing trailers. Traffic circulation should besimple, functional, and avoid dead ends

Design parking areas to provide smoothlyflowing traffic circulation for vehicles pulling

    trailers.

    Underground

Parking Parking is the act of stopping a vehicleand leaving it unoccupied for more

than a brief time. Parking on one orboth sides of a road is commonlypermitted, though often withrestrictions. Parking facilities areconstructed in combination with mostbuildings, to facilitate the coming andgoing of the buildings' users.

    Advantage:

    Building parking underground is

more expensive but it creates a

better urban fabric than aboveground parking. And you will be

able to create active uses on top ofthe structure

    How decreasing motor

    vehicles helpful in traffic

management? We need to encourage people to use the public

transportation system, such as, metro, train, buses or

even shuttle. To achieve this goal, we can return partof the taxes belong to the people who used metro fora year, or a family who have just one family car. Alsoby increasing the number of buses in our cities, peoplewill encourage to use buses. By purchasing a couple of

hundred new modern and elegant buses also we cancatch everybody's attention to use them.

    Governments can encourage the

    reduction of vehicular use by:

    Promoting Voluntary abstention

Increase Public Transit - diversify options and

limit access to existing roads. Separate commercial and private traffic to

    increase efficient use of roads

    Stop building car-oriented roads andhighways

In cities, build more walking paths, bicycleroutes and roads for small electric vehicles
