ASIA PACIFIC WEEK 2014 Pre-‐Departure Information
CANBERRA
Canberra is the capital city of Australia and has a population of just under 400,000. While small, Canberra is unique, and combines the benefits of country and city life. As the seat of the Australian government Canberra is the site of many social and cultural institutions of national significance including Parliament House, the High Court and the Australian War Memorial. The city provides students with easy access to policymakers, politicians and international diplomats, and presents Australian culture, politics, art, heritage and history in a variety of ways.
INTERNATIONAL FLIGHTS Most international carriers do not land in Canberra. International delegates will need to fly to either Sydney or Melbourne (although it is more convenient to arrive in Sydney). From Sydney delegates are able to book a connecting flight to Canberra or reserve a seat on a coach to Canberra.
For cheap and affordable flights, delegates are advised to consult the following websites to compare ticket prices: 1. Skyscanner: http://www.skyscanner.com.au 2. Orbitz: http://www.orbitz.com 3. Webjet: http://www.webjet.com.au 4. Zuji: http://www.zuji.com.au 5. Expedia: http://www.expedia.com.au
Please remember to book your return flights to the same home destination. This will make reimbursement easier to process. If you choose to travel before or after the conference, please remember that your travel grant (if applicable) is limited to the amount that will be allocated to you
Please also don’t forget the following if required
• Travel insurance • Visa
DOMESTIC FLIGHTS For international and domestic delegates interested in catching a domestic flight from Sydney or Melbourne, please consult the following carriers, which fly into Canberra: 1. Virgin Australia: http://www.expedia.com.au 2. Jetstar: http://www.expedia.com.au 3. Qantas: http://www.qantas.com.au/travel/airlines/domestic-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐ economy-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐class/global/en
Please remember that those arriving to Canberra by plane will need to organise their own transport to the University’s Bruce Hall. Taxis are an easy and efficient mode of transport, but please do ask the taxi driver for a fixed price to Bruce Hall.
N.B: Travelling by plane to Canberra can be expensive, and it is recommended that international and domestic delegates catch the coach to Canberra instead
INTERSTATE COACHES: Sydney to Canberra Travelling time by coach from Sydney to Canberra will take approximately three and a half hours. The bus leaves from Sydney International Airport and arrives at the Jolimont Centre, Canberra. There are many benefits to taking the coach:
• Tickets are considerably cheaper than domestic plane tickets • Delegates arriving in Canberra by coach will have assistance from the Asia Pacific Week Organising Committee when they arrive at Jolimont Centre
• Most Coach services do not charge for extra baggage Murrays provides frequent services from Sydney Central Station/Sydney International Airport to Canberra. Greyhound is another option. Please remember to coordinate your desired coach times with your plane arrivals (and Customs Inspection, Immigration etc) The coach service will arrive at the Jolimont Centre, located in the city centre. Delegates can make their own way to Bruce Hall (approximately 15 minutes walk), or catch the shuttle bus provided by the Asia Pacific Week organising committee, which runs directly from the Jolimont Centre to the accommodation facilities. There will also be committee members waiting at the Jolimont Centre to assist and meet you during the day. Driving to Canberra For interstate delegates who wish to drive to Canberra, please notify us if you intend to park your car on campus. Parking spaces in ANU require a permit, so it is essential that we are advised in advance. If you are renting a car and returning it in Canberra, please make sure you have sufficient time to do so. If you are driving, remember to give yourself enough rest, and ensure your car has enough fuel before embarking on your trip.
