Water and Baptism
Jan. 10, 2016 The Baptism of the Lord

Agua y Bautismo
Today we conclude the Christmas season as we celebrate the Baptism
of the Lord. Tomorrow we begin Ordinary Time, which continues until Ash
Wednesday, February 10th. As we celebrate the baptism of Jesus, let us recall
the importance of water in the sacrament of baptism. In this initiation sacra-
ment water symbolizes cleansing, through which our sins, including the stain of
original sin, is removed. Water also symbolizes new life. Just as the earth
needs the rain for new life and growth, so do we in our spiritual life. This be-
gins with the sacrament of baptism and is remembered each time we enter
church and bless ourselves with the holy water. That blessing is to recall our
baptism and to acknowledge our need to water our faith life if we are to grow. Perhaps the red doors of mercy outside the Church can remind you to
water your faith life by sharing God’s mercy. As you come to church each week
to celebrate Sunday Mass, remember this is your time to water and nourish your
spiritual life. Hopefully by being attentive to your spiritual life you can grow in
your faith and better reflect Jesus Christ in your words and actions. As a result,
you could hear these words from today’s Gospel being addressed to you person-
ally, when the Father says: “You are my beloved son/daughter; with you I am
well pleased.” May your faith find refreshment within these holy walls and
may your lives reflect what you believe and profess. Blessings and peace to
you all. Fr. Tom
Pray for Vocations – Please remember to pray for more vocations to religious life and the priesthood during this holy
season. This can be our special gift to the Church. You may also go to the parish office and check out the “Vocation
Chalice” for a week as a reminder and tool to pray for vocations.

In the Spotlight
History of the Feast of the Santo Nino
The devotion to the Sto. Niño (Holy Child) is the oldest and the one
of the most popular in the Philippines. When Miguel Lopez Legazpi
landed on the island of Cebu in 1565, one of his soldiers found an
image of the Child Jesus. It is believed to be the same statue Magel-
lan had given to the wife of the chieftain of the island after her bap-
tism. Everyone thought the statue had been destroyed in a fire that
broke out during the Battle of Mactan in which the Portuguese ex-
plorer lost his life.
The image is venerated today in the Basilica in Cebu. For Filipino
Catholics the Holy Child represents a God who is accessible to all
and can be approached without fear. The devotion instills the virtues
of simplicity, obedience, and trust in God. At the same time it calls
for mature discipleship and loving service at all

Ushers and Greeters
Needed
A warm welcome greatly enhanc-
es worship and community even
before the Mass begins. For new-
comers, it is the first impression
that people have about how
friendly our church body truly is.
The simple message that they
provide is: "all are welcome in the
presence of God's people!"
Greeters welcome the parishion-
ers as they enter Mass and the
Ushers give assistance during the
worship service. It would imply
coming 20 minutes before Mass
begins in order to serve. If you
are interested in volunteering
please call (661) 202-0995, or
even talk to an usher or greeter
after any of the Masses to inquire.
Thank you!
