WELCOME THE STRANGER We have become accustomed to seeing pictures in the media and stories on the news about immigrants from Latin America and refugees from Syria fleeing violence and destruction in their own countries, trying to make their way to a safe place. We have also seen the reactions of people who want to keep them away from their countries, who fail to wel-come the stranger and the helpless children. Have we forgotten Jesus’ call to comfort the homeless and the stranger? “They shall bring all your brothers and sisters from all the nations . . . to Jerusalem, my holy mountain, says the Lord.” In the three readings for this day, we are told that we are to welcome these strangers, to welcome the discipline of the Lord, which leads to peace, and to “strive to enter through the narrow gate” into the glory of God’s own homeland, the reign of God.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The wonderful diversity of life and worship among Roman Catholics of East and West is an example of God writing straight with crooked lines. The steady hand of the villainous Emperor Diocletian drew a line across Europe and Africa that split the empire in two, and for the most part determined how Christians would worship two thousand years later. Italy’s heel and the far northern city of Trieste fell on the Eastern side, and have had a form of Eastern liturgy ever since. Constantinople, which soon became the seat of the Roman Empire, became a base for Christianizing the East up to Russia and Poland. Poland was on the Eastern side, but a series of wars and medieval mayhem pushed the religious boundary back to the Ukraine, and Poland remains an outpost of the Latin Church to this day. An old rule of thumb declared that whatever religion was observed by the local prince, the people had to follow. This gave rise to persecution and migration as people sought toleration for their expressions of faith. In the United States, we are accustomed to peaceful collaboration among Christians of East and West, a situation that challenges churches that still feel the pinch of age-old division.

Anuncio Importante: Queridos parroquianos, quisiera con esta nota darles dos anuncios que afectan a nuestro camino pastoral. Por un lado, la nominación de Jonathan Ramos como coordinador del programa de preparación a la confirmación de nuestra parroquia. Un Joven que ha finalizado sus estudios de Psicología y a la vez ha sido preparado con su participación, durante 9 años, como Leader del programa y, a la vez, con estudios de capacitación de teología pastoral enfocada al liderazgo de Jóvenes. Oramos por él y le damos nuestra bienvenida y apoyo. Por otro lado, he estado buscando alguien que pueda ayudarnos en el desarrollo de la pastoral, en lengua inglesa, en nuestra parroquia. El diácono Ryan Adams estará sirviendo a la parroquia de San Patricio desde ahora. Si bien no a tiem-po lleno, de momento está a cargo de la residencia de ancianos llamdado Colonial Convalescent Hospital, a la que asiste cada Domingo celebrando una liturgia de la palabra con la comunión y acompañamiento espiritual de varios ancianos. También está a cargo del programa de prebautismales en inglés, así como de los bautizos mismos. Estamos viendo otros ámbitos en los que podamos empezar un camino de comunidades cristianas y experiencia de discipulado, entorno a la Palabra de Dios, en lengua inglesa. DA LA BIENVENIDA AL EXTRANJERO Ya casi nos hemos acostumbrado a ver fotografías en las redes sociales e historias en los periódicos de inmigrantes lati-noamericanos y refugiados sirios escapando de la violencia y la destrucción de sus propios países, intentando hacer una vi-da mejor en un lugar más seguro. También nos ha tocado ver las reacciones de las personas que intentan mantenerlas lejos de sus países, que se oponen a ayudar a los extranjeros y a los niños indefensos. ¿Se nos ha olvidado la enseñanza de Jesús de ayudar a los desamparados y a los extranjeros? “Traerán todos a sus hermanos y hermanas de todas las naciones . . . a Jerusalén, a mi monte santo, dice el Señor”. En las tres lecturas de hoy, se nos dice que debemos ser hospitalarios con los extranjeros, dar la bienvenida a los discí-pulos del Señor, lo cual nos lleva a la paz, y a “entrar por la puerta que es angosta” a la gloria del reino de Dios.

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE Hay quienes quieren negar los derechos de los inmigrantes latinos que llegan a los Estados Unidos en busca de una vida mejor. Esta injusticia es extraña ya que los hispanos llegamos al territorio estadounidense en 1513, 73 años antes de la llegada de los primeros anglosajones. Estos fueron Ponce de León y compañeros quienes buscaban una mejor vida en la famosa fuente de la juventud. Eventualmente los hispanos dejaron de buscar la ilusoria fuente y en 1565 en la fiesta de san Agustín (28 de Agosto), Pedro Menéndez de Avilés fundó la primera ciudad en Florida. Gracias a su santo patrón esta ciudad ha podido sobrevivir ataques de invasores británicos y piratas, amenazas de huracanes y tempestades para convertirse en la ciudad más vieja de la Unión Americana. ¿Pero quien fue este santo? Agustín, fue un obispo africano, quien después de una vida desordenada se convirtió en uno de los santos mas importan-tes de la Iglesia, gracias a las oraciones continuas de su madre santa Mónica. Nunca debemos menospreciar el poder de las oraciones de una madre por sus hijos.

Important announcement: Dear parishioners, I would like to give you two announcements that affect our pastoral path with this note. On one hand, the nomination of Jonathan Ramos as coordinator of the confirmation preparation program of our parish. A young man who has finished his studies of Psychology and at the same time has been prepared with his participation, for 9 years, as Leader of the program and, at the same time, with studies of pastoral theology training focused on youth leadership. We pray for him and we welcome him and support him. On the other hand, I have been looking for someone who can help us in the development of pastoral care, in English, in our parish. Deacon Ryan Adams will be serving St. Patrick's Parish from now on. Although not full-time, at the moment he is in charge of the residence of elders Colonial Convalescent Home, which he assists every Sunday celebrating a liturgy of the word with the communion and spiritual accompaniment of several elders. He is also in charge of the pre-baptismal pro-gram in English, as well as the baptisms themselves. We are looking at other areas in which we can begin a path of Chris-tian communities and experience of discipleship, around the Word of God, in the English language.
