XXVII Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario

From the Pastor’s Desk

This past week the church commemorated the feast days of three great saints and the

Guardian Angels. Often we desire to be reminded that God is with us in our daily joys and struggles. This week we are presented the lives of three virtuous human beings who through the example of their holy life give us hope to become holy. God also reminds us of His presence among us as He sends His angels among us to protect and serve us.

On September 30th we celebrated the feast of St. Jerome, a doctor of the church, who over the time span of 30 years translated the Bible from its original languages of Hebrew and Greek into the language of the church, Latin. It is from St. Jerome’s Latin translation that we translate the bible into the secular languages.

On October 1st we celebrated the feast St. Thérèse of Lisieux, the Little Flower, a doctor of the church. She; however, was significantly different from St. Jerome. St. Therese lived most of her life behind the walls of a Carmelite monastery in Lisieux France. She was not the author of great theological works; in fact, she only wrote a few poems and her famous autobiography, The Story of a Soul. She died at the age of 24 from tuberculosis and is greatly known for her spirituality of “little way”. This spirituality emphasized doing little things with great love. Through the simplicity of St Therese we learn to depend on the mercy and love of God that gives us the hope of achieving our salvation. St. Therese once said, “I want to spend my heaven doing good on earth.” Here greatness is evident through her humility and her concern for the needs of others.

On October 2nd we celebrated the feast of the Guardian angels. Yes! Angels are real, and we have an angel created by God himself to protect and serve us. These angels are called Guardian Angels. The angels are a reminder of God’s desire to protect and serve his children. He sends His angels among us because he wants to protect His children from all evil and danger.

On October 4th we celebrated the feast of St. Francis of Assisi, the patron of animals. In 1209 he founded the religious order of Franciscan brothers and priests. His humility and rejection of earthly riches serves as an example of how to place our attention on God instead of earthly riches. St. Francis was a deacon who was a great preacher. One of the great images we have of St. Francis is of him preaching to the wolf of Gubbio. This wolf was known to terrorize the Umbrian city of Gubbio until St. Francis tamed it.

We are so blessed with the presence of the Roman Catholic Church in our lives! She reveals to us the beauty and richness of our catholic faith. Each day we are preparing for our entrance into heaven, and it is very evident that through the few feast days we celebrated this week that God is doing everything possible to inspire, protect, and lead us to everlasting life. Be proud to be a member of the Catholic Church! She reveals the continual divine presence of God among us.

La semana pasada, la iglesia conmemoraba los días festivos de tres grandes santos y los Ángeles Custodios. A menudo deseamos que se nos recuerde que Dios está con nosotros en nuestras alegrías y luchas diarias. Esta semana se nos presentan las vidas de tres seres humanos virtuosos que a través del ejemplo de su vida santa nos dan la esperanza de ser santos. Dios también nos recuerda su presencia entre nosotros cuando envía a sus ángeles entre nosotros para protegernos y servirnos. El 30 de septiembre celebramos la fiesta de San Jerónimo, un doctor de la iglesia, que durante 30 años tradujo la Biblia de sus idiomas originales de hebreo y griego al idioma de la iglesia, el latín. Es de la traducción al latín de San Jerónimo que traducimos la Biblia a los idiomas seculares. El 1 de octubre celebramos la fiesta de Santa Teresa de Lisieux, la Pequeña Flor, doctora de la iglesia. El 4 de octubre celebramos la fiesta de San Francisco de Asís, el patrón de los animales. En 1209 fundó la orden religiosa de hermanos y sacerdotes franciscanos. Su humildad y rechazo de las riquezas terrenales sirve como un ejemplo de cómo poner nuestra atención en Dios en lugar de las riquezas terrenales. RCIA Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults

RCIA is a process for adults who are interested in learning more about the Catholic faith leading to

becoming a member of the Catholic Church. Baptized Catholics who have not yet received the

sacraments of Holy Eucharist and /or Confirmation are welcome to complete their preparation for the

sacraments of initiation through participation in the RCIA process.

If you are interested in becoming a Catholic or completing your sacraments of initiation please contact

Fr. Richard Marrano or call the rectory at 718-542-6164 or pass by the rectory for an appointment.

Classes are available in Spanish and English. The Fee Is $50 Per Person or $75 Per Couple

Classes are on Mondays at 7:00 pm in the rectory.

RICA: Rito de Iniciación Cristiana para Adultos

RICA es un proceso para adultos que están interesados en aprender más acerca de la fe católica para

llegar a ser miembro de la Iglesia Católica. Católicos bautizados que no han recibido los sacramentos

It is with great joy that we begin another year of service to our Lord at

His Altar in our Church. We are inviting boys and girls to become

Altar Servers. This allows our youth to actively participate in the

liturgical life of our parish. Those who wish to become a server must

fulfill the following requirements:

• Must attend Mass ever Sunday or Saturday night.

• Must be in fifth grade or above.

• Must have received First Communion.

• Must attend ALL scheduled practices.

If you are interested please speak with Fr. Richard.

Es con gran alegría que comenzamos otro año de servicio a nuestro

Señor en Su Altar en nuestra Iglesia. Invitamos a niños y niñas a

convertirse en Servidores de Altar. Esto permite que nuestros jóvenes
