En un privilegiado rincón de Mallorca, donde se alza como telón de fondo el azul poético de la bahía de Formentor, resuenan una vez más los acordes musicales. El inigualable entorno de uno de los hoteles más icónicos del Mediterráneo, el Formentor a Royal Hideaway Hotel, se viste nuevamente de gala para acoger sobre su escenario a los mejores artistas de nuestro siglo.

A lo largo de siete años, el Festival Formentor Sunset Classics se ha ido consolidando como un espacio de referencia dentro de la escena de la música clásica a nivel internacional. Bajo un mismo concepto, ha logrado reunir no sólo la genialidad y perfección de figuras consagradas mundialmente, sino también el talento y la potencialidad de las nuevas generaciones. Esta es, sin duda, una apuesta de futuro que refleja nuestro compromiso con la excelencia en la formación musical: uno de los objetivos del convenio de colaboración que, desde 2014, viene realizando el Barceló Hotel Group con la Escuela Superior de Música Reina Sofía.

La programación artística de esta VII edición, incluirá cuatro grandes momentos. Por un lado, dentro de los Conciertos de Temporada se escucharán las notas de la inigualable pianista Maria João Pires, que cautivará a los oyentes con obras de Mozart, Beethoven y Chopin; así como la legendaria Orquesta Filarmónica de Múnich, que sonará bajo la batuta de Gustavo Dudamel, interpretando una vibrante sinfonía de Mahler. Por el otro, en el Ciclo de Cámara tendremos la oportunidad de oír a grandes estrellas en ascenso: el pianista Dmytro Choni, vencedor en el Concurso Internacional de Piano de Santander, Paloma O'Shea, 2018; y Rubén Mendoza, ganador durante dos años consecutivos de la Beca Grupo Barceló.

Asimismo, el festival ofrecerá momentos de verdadera inspiración, como las Masterclasses, que presentan una visión amena y profunda de las obras a interpretar, y el colofón perfecto de las Cenas de Gala, un espacio exclusivo en el que se puede vivir más de cerca a los grandes artistas.

La pianista portuguesa Maria João Pires ha cautivado a sus audiencias gracias a la sensibilidad, autenticidad e inspiración de sus interpretaciones. Con su estilo incomparable, pleno de lirismo y profundidad, logra siempre sobre el escenario dar voz a la esencia de la música: esa combinación de sonidos que cobra vida a través de sus manos, iluminando el silencio como un rayo claro y directo sobre un lienzo transparente. El programa que ofrecerá, rodeada por los idílicos jardines del Formentor a Royal Hideaway Hotel, reunirá algunas de las piezas más emblemáticas de Beethoven, Mozart y Chopin; tres compositores que, sin duda, han marcado profundamente la trayectoria de esta gran artista de nuestro siglo.

Nacida el 23 de julio de 1944 en Lisboa, Maria João Pires dio su primer concierto público a la edad de 4 años; comenzó sus estudios de música y piano con Campos Coelho y Francine Benoît, continuándolos más tarde en Alemania con Rosl Schmid y Karl Engel. Además de sus conciertos, ha realizado grabaciones para la discográfica Erato durante quince años y Deutsche Grammophon durante veinte.

Desde la década de 1970, Pires se ha dedicado a reflejar la influencia del arte en la vida, la comunidad y la educación, tratando de descubrir nuevas maneras de establecer esta forma de pensar en sociedad. Busca nuevas vías, respetando el desarrollo de individuos y culturas, para fomentar el intercambio de ideas.

En 1999 creó en Portugal el Belgais Centre, dedicado al estudio de las Artes, dónde Maria João Pires ofrece regularmente talleres interdisciplinarios para músicos profesionales y amantes de la música. En la sala de conciertos de Belgais se realizan con frecuencia conciertos y grabaciones; en el futuro, estas se compartirán con la comunidad digital internacional.

Hace seis años, la pianista inició dos proyectos complementarios en Bélgica: los “Coros Partitura”, un proyecto que crea y desarrolla coros para niños de entornos desfavorecidos y los “Talleres Partitura”. Todos estos proyectos tienen como objetivo crear una dinámica altruista entre artistas de diferentes generaciones, proponiendo una alternativa a un mundo demasiado centrado en la competitividad. Estos proyectos, talleres y filosofía ya se están difundiendo por todas partes.

Aclamado por la crítica internacional, y recientemente acogido como estrella internacional en el Paseo de la Fama de Hollywood, Gustavo Dudamel se ha consagrado como el director de orquesta más importante e influyente de la actualidad. Bajo su batuta, y por primera vez en el Formentor Sunset Classics, se escuchará la célebre Sinfonía Nr. 2, «Resurrección», de Gustav Mahler. Impulsado por una creencia inquebrantable en el poder de la música para sanar, unir e inspirar, Gustavo Dudamel es uno de los directores más destacados de nuestros días. Desde las grandes salas de conciertos hasta aulas, pantallas de vídeo y cines, la notable carrera de lo-gros musicales de Dudamel y la promoción del acceso a las artes para los jóvenes de todo el mundo demuestran la extraordinaria capacidad de la música para transformar vidas.

En la temporada 2018/19 Dudamel se centrará en la celebración del centenario de la Fi-larmónica de Los Ángeles y su décimo año como su Director de Música y Arte. Otros aspectos destacados de la temporada incluyen su debut en la Metropolitan Opera dirigiendo Otello de Verdi; giras con Filarmónica de Berlín, Filarmónica de Múnich y Mahler Chamber Orchestra, y su primera residencia académica extendida en la Universidad de Princeton.

Bajo la dirección de Dudamel, LA Phil se ha convertido en una de las principales orques-tas del mundo, admirada por su compromiso inigualable con la nueva música, la diversidad y la inclusión, y por el desarrollo de iniciativas digitales pioneras. La celebración de la tempo-rada número cien de LA Phil muestra la extraordinaria versatilidad y visión de la orquesta y del propio Dudamel, con más de 50 encargos de destacados compositores como John Adams, Philip Glass y Steve Reich, así como jóvenes compositores líderes como Julia Adolphe, As-hley Fure, Andrew Norman, Tyshawn Sorey, Kamasi Washington y Du Yun. Dudamel dirigirá colaboraciones entre géneros con Herbie Hancock, Moby y Andrew Bird, además de los cin-co conciertos para piano de Beethoven con Lang Lang como solista, una actuación en los Pre-mios de la Academia, una gira por Asia y más.

Defensor de la educación musical y el desarrollo social a través del arte, el propio Duda-mel fue moldeado por su experiencia infantil con El Sistema, el extraordinario programa de inmersión musical iniciado en 1975 por José Antonio Abreu. Al comenzar su 19º año como Director Musical de la Orquesta Sinfónica Simón Bolívar, Dudamel también continúa con el trabajo de su último mentor con su compromiso continuo con El Sistema en Venezuela y apo-yando numerosos proyectos inspirados por Sistema en todo el mundo, incluido Big Noise en Escocia, el programa Superar de Viena, SerHacer en Boston y El Sistema Sweden.

Su gira "Américas" 2018 con la Filarmónica de Viena destacó entre otras cosas por un ta-ller de Arte y Ciudadanía en la Ciudad de México que reunió a 300 jóvenes de América del Norte y del Sur en una expresión de solidaridad cultural. Ha trabajado para crear conciencia sobre la importancia de la educación musical al presentarse en las Naciones Unidas y la Ca-sa Blanca, y pronunció un discurso sobre la unidad de las Artes y las Ciencias en el Concier-to del Premio Nobel de 2017.

Dudamel también continúa expandiendo el alcance de su iniciativa Youth Orchestra Los Angeles (YOLA). Fundado en 2007, el programa brindó acceso a educación musical de ca-lidad a decenas de miles de niños de comunidades desatendidas de todo Los Ángeles. 2019 verá la construcción de una nueva instalación diseñada por Frank Gehry para YOLA en In-glewood, California.

Es uno de los pocos músicos clásicos que realmente llega al público mayoritario man-teniendo la mayor integridad musical, Gustavo Dudamel ha aparecido tres veces en los 60 Minutos de CBS y fue el tema de un especial de PBS, Dudamel: Conducting a Life. Ha sido en-trevistado por Christiane Amanpour en CNN, Conan O'Brian en Conan, Stephen Colbert en The Late Show y Elmo en Sesame Street. Tuvo un papel secundario en la galardonada serie de Amazon Studio Mozart in the Jungle y, junto con miembros de YOLA, se convirtió en el pri-mer músico clásico en participar en el espectáculo del descanso de la Super Bowl, junto a las estrellas del pop Coldplay, Beyoncé y Bruno Mars. En 2017, fue el director más joven en diri-gir el famoso Concierto del Día de Año Nuevo de la Filarmónica de Viena, que anualmente es visto por más de 60 millones de personas en 90 países. A petición personal de John Williams, Dudamel fue director invitado en la banda sonora de Star Wars: The Force Awakens; también grabó la banda sonora de James Newton Howard para el éxito navideño de Disney, The Nut-cracker, en la que hace un cameo en pantalla. Gustavo Dudamel es uno de los directores más condecorados de su generación. En reco-nocimiento a su defensa de la proliferación de las artes en las Américas, recibió la Medalla de Arte Páez 2018 y la Orden de Mérito Artístico y Cultural de Pablo Neruda, el Premio de Logro Cultural de la Sociedad de las Américas en 2016 y el Logro de toda la vida de Leonard Berns-tein 2014 Premio a la elevación de la música en la sociedad de la Longy School of Music. Fue nombrado Músico del Año de Musical America's 2013, uno de los más altos honores en la in-dustria de la música clásica, y votado en el Gramophone Hall of Fame. En octubre de 2011, fue nombrado Artista Grammophone del Año, y en mayo del mismo año, fue incluido en la Real Academia Sueca de Música en consideración a sus "méritos eminentes en el arte musical". El año anterior, recibió el Premio Eugene McDermott en las Artes en el MIT. Dudamel fue ad-mitido en la Ordre des Arts et des Lettres como Chevalier en París en 2009 y recibió un doc-torado honorario de la Universidad Centroccidental Lisandro Alvarado en su ciudad natal de Barquisimeto. En 2008, la Orquesta Juvenil Simón Bolívar fue galardonada con el prestigioso premio anual de las Artes Príncipe de Asturias y, junto con su mentor José Antonio Abreu, recibió el "Premio Q"de la Universidad de Harvard por un servicio extraordinario a los niños. Fue nom-brado una de las 100 personas más influyentes de la revista Time en 2009.

Gustavo Dudamel nació en 1981 en Barquisimeto, Venezuela. Comenzó sus clases de vio-lín cuando era niño con José Luis Jiménez y Francisco Díaz en el Conservatorio Jacinto Lara. Continuó sus estudios de violín con Rubén Cova y José Francisco del Castillo en la Academia Latinoamericana de Violín. Sus estudios de dirección comenzaron en 1993 cuando fue con-tratado como director asistente de la Orquesta de Cámara de Amadeus. En 1996, estudió con Rodolfo Saglimbeni y fue nombrado Director Musical de la Orquesta de Cámara de Amadeus. En 1999, fue nombrado Director Musical de la Orquesta Juvenil Simón Bolívar y comenzó a realizar estudios con el fundador de la orquesta, el Dr. Abreu. Dudamel logró la atención in-ternacional al ganar el Concurso inaugural Bamberger Symphoniker Gustav Mahler en 2004. Luego se convirtió en Director Musical de la Sinfónica de Gotemburgo (2007-2012), donde actualmente ostenta el título de Director Honorario. Inspirada en las primeras experiencias musicales y de tutoría de Dudamel, la Fundación Gustavo Dudamel, una organización benéfi-ca registrada, se creó en 2012 con el objetivo de promover el acceso a la música como un dere-cho humano y un catalizador para el aprendizaje, la integración y el cambio social.

En la temporada 2018-2019, la Filarmónica de Múnich celebra su 125 aniversario. La orquesta se fundó en 1893 y, desde entonces, bajo la dirección de directores de renombre, ha enriquecido enormemente la vida musical de Munich. Gustav Mahler dirigió la orquesta en los estrenos mundiales de sus 4ª y 8ª Sinfonías, y en noviembre de 1911, el estreno mundial de “Das Lied von der Erde” de Mahler tuvo lugar bajo la dirección de Bruno Walter. Ferdinand Löwe dirigió los primeros conciertos de Bruckner y estableció la tradición Bruckner de la or-questa, que luego fue continuada por Siegmund von Hausegger y Oswald von Kabasta.

Algunos de los hitos más importantes en la historia de la orquesta han sido su primera gira con el legendario concierto de Bruckner -bajo la dirección de Sergiu Celibidache- por Estados Unidos (en la etapa de Rudolf Kempe); el premio al "Mejor programa de conciertos en la tem-porada 2002/2003" de la Asociación Alemana de Editores de Música con su director, James Levine; el nombramiento de Zubin Mehta como primer "director laureado" en la historia de la orquesta; los dos conciertos con motivo del centésimo aniversario del estreno de la Sinfonía No. 8 de Gustav Mahler en Munich con Christian Thielemann y la sucesión de este último en el puesto de director por Lorin Maazel, quien ocupó el cargo hasta su muerte en 2014.

Desde la temporada 2015-16, el puesto de director de orquesta de la Filarmónica de Mu-nich está en manos de Valery Gergiev. Las giras han llevado a la orquesta a numerosas ciu-dades europeas, así como a Japón, China, Corea, Taiwán y los Estados Unidos. Los aspectos más destacados del programa concebido por Valery Gergiev incluyen actuaciones de ciclos sinfónicos de Shostakovich, Stravinsky, Prokofiev y Rachmaninov, así como nuevos formatos, como el festival "MPHIL 360 °". Los conciertos se retransmiten regularmente en vivo por radio y televisión. En septiembre de 2016, las primeras grabaciones de CD que documenta-ban el trabajo de la Filarmónica de Munich se publicaron bajo el propio sello de la orquesta, "MPHIL". Actualmente, la Filarmónica y Valery Gergiev están trabajando en una grabación completa de las sinfonías de Anton Bruckner en la iglesia de la abadía de San Florián.

Con "Spielfeld Klassik", la Filarmónica de Munich ha desarrollado un programa integral de educación musical para jóvenes y mayores. Cerca de 35.000 personas de todas las edades han asistido a los más de 150 eventos que se celebran cada año. Conciertos para niños, alum-nos y jóvenes, oportunidades para ver ensayos de la Filarmónica, demostraciones de instru-mentos musicales y suscripciones a conciertos para alumnos, ofrecen a los niños y jóvenes oportunidades variadas para escuchar y aprender sobre la música clásica.

La soprano Chen Reiss ha desarrollado una notable carrera, encandilando a las audien-cias con "una de las voces de Strauss más perfectas que uno podría desear" (Fuente clásica), "una voz de brillo plateado y claridad" (Bachtrack) con "inmaculado y atractivo tono combi-nado con una excelente maestría musical” (Opera News, EE. UU.).

Nacida en Israel, saltó a la fama como miembro del conjunto de la Ópera Estatal de Ba-viera bajo la dirección musical de Zubin Mehta. Ha actuado en Royal Opera House Covent Garden, Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, Teatro alla Scala, Semperoper Dresden, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Ópera Estatal de Hamburgo, Ópera de los Países Bajos, Maggio Musicale Fio-rentino, Compañía de Ópera de Filadelfia y Ópera de Israel.

Los aspectos más destacados de esta temporada y las siguientes incluyen su debut como Susanna (Le nozze di Figaro) y Aennchen (Der Freischutz) en la Ópera Estatal de Viena, don-de también regresará como Zdenka (Arabella), Marzelline (Fidelio) y Sophie (Der Rosenka-valier). Además, actuará en la Sinfonía Nº 2 de Mahler con la Filarmónica de Munich y en gira por Europa con Gustavo Dudamel; The Seasons de Haydn con la Orquesta Sinfónica de la Ra-dio de Berlín bajo la dirección de Vladimir Jurowski, interpretará los roles de solista de los Salmos de Chichester de Bernstein y la Sinfonía No. 4 de Mahler en los conciertos de apertu-ra de temporada de la Orquesta Sinfónica de la Radio de Praga, y la Sinfonía No. 3 de Berns-tein 'Kaddish' con la Filarmónica de Israel e Ilan Volkov.

Esta temporada, la mezzosoprano Tamara Mumford vuelve a la Metropolitan Opera con el Ciclo del Anillo y actúa en concierto con la Orquesta de Cleveland Orchestra, Sinfó-nica de Chicago, Filarmónica de Los Ángeles y Filarmónica de Berlín en Berlín y en gira por Asia. Además, hará su debut en la Ópera de Santa Fe en el estreno mundial de The Thirteen-th Child.

Licenciada en el Programa de Desarrollo de Jóvenes Artistas Londemann de la Metro-politan Opera, Mumford ha participado en cerca de 140 representaciones con la compañía, incluyendo producciones de L’Amour de loin, Anna Bolena, Rigoletto, Cavalleria Rusticana, Nixon in China, The Queen of Spades, The Magic Flute y Wozzeck con Kaija Saariaho. Otros compromisos operísticos recientes han sido Tancredi, Aureliano in Palmira y Lucrezia Bor-gia en el Festival Caramoor; Phaedra de Henze, The Rape of Lucretia y el estreno mundial de Yardbird de Daniel Schnyder en la Ópera de Philadelphia y L'incoronazione di Poppea en el Festival de Glyndebourne y las Proms de la BBC.

Es uno de los coros amateurs de referencia del país. Con más de 125 años de historia, fue fundado en 1891 por Lluís Millet y Amadeu Vives para difundir el repertorio coral catalán y universal y velar por la excelencia artística de sus interpretaciones. Simon Halsey es su director titular, Pablo Larraz el subdirector y Josep Buforn el pianista. Tiene su sede en el Palau de la Música Catalana, declarado Patrimonio Mundial por la UNESCO.

El Orfeó ha interpretado las obras más representativas del repertorio coral y ha protagonizando primeras audiciones en nuestro país de obras importantes, como la Misa en Si menor de Bach o Las estaciones de Haydn. Ha sido dirigido por primeras batutas internacionales: R. Strauss, C. Saint-Saëns, P. Casals, Z. Mehta, F. Brüggen, M. Rostropovich, Ch. Dutoit, L. Maazel, D. Barenboim, S. Rattle y G. Dudamel, entre otros. En los últimos años ha debutado en la Konzerthaus de Viena, en la Sala Gulbenkian de Lisboa, ha protagonizado una gira por Italia con la Mahler Chamber Orchestra, dirigidos por D. Gatti, y ha actuado en Londres en dos ocasiones, en 2015 en el Royal Festival Hall de Londres y en 2017 en el Royal Albert Hall debutando a los Proms. En octubre de 2017 protagonizó el Palau el estreno europeo de Considering Matthew Shepard de Craig Hella Johnson, bajo la dirección de Simon Halsey.

El Orfeó, junto con los coros de la Escola Coral del Orfeó Català, protagonizó en el Grec Festival de Barcelona 2018 el estreno en España de la ópera participativa El monstruo en el laberinto de Jonathan Dove (música) y Alasdair Middleton (libreto), en versión catalana de Marc Rosich, bajo la dirección de Simon Halsey, en una producción del Grec Festival y la Fundació Orfeó Català-Palau de la Música Catalana.

La temporada 2018-19 el Orfeó Català tiene compromisos internacionales relevantes, como la gira por China en el marco del Shanghai International Arts Festival (octubre de 2018) o los conciertos con Gustavo Dudamel y la Münchner Philharmoniker en el Palau de la Música Catalana, Madrid y Munich.

Graduado con honores por el Conservatorio de Viena, inició su carrera internacional como director de orquesta en 1998 con la Cape Town Philharmonic. Fue nombrado director honorífico de la Orchester-Verein de Schwechat (Baja Austria), así como Titular de la Schönbrunner Kappelle en Viena. Asimismo, tanto en Europa como en América, ha dado conciertos al frente de orquestas como la Kammer-Philharmonie (Hungría), la Pressburger Symphoniker (Eslovaquia), la Spokane Symphony (USA), la Sinfónica de Baleares (España) y la Innsbrucker Symphoniker (Austria). Desde 2009 se ha desempeñado como profesor de Musicología, Interpretación musical y Música de cámara en el Conservatorio de las Islas Baleares, y desde 2014 actúa como Director Artístico del Festival Formentor Sunset Classics.

Over the past seven years, the Formentor Sunset Classics Festival has established itself as a renowned venue in the international classical music scene. It brings together the genius and perfection of globally-acclaimed stars with the talent and potential of new generations. This forward-looking project reflects our commitment to excellence in music education, which is one of the goals of the partnership dating back to 2014 between the Barceló Hotel Group and the Reina Sofía School of Music.

The artistic programme for this 7th edition will include four great moments. The Season Concerts will feature the incomparable pianist Maria João Pires, who will captivate audiences with works by Mozart, Beethoven and Chopin. Additionally, the legendary Munich Philharmonic will perform one of Mahler’s vibrant symphonies under the direction of Gustavo Dudamel. The Chamber Series will give audiences the chance to hear up-and-coming artists, including the pianist Dmytro Choni, winner of the 2018 Paloma O'Shea Santander International Piano Competition; and Rubén Mendoza, recipient of the Barceló Hotel Group Grant two years in a row.

The festival will also bring truly inspiring moments, such as the Master Classes, which delve into the works that will be performed; and the gala dinners, which will offer the perfect finishing touch in an exclusive space where attendees can interact with great artists.

Born on 23 July 1944 in Lisbon, Maria João Pires gave her first public performance at the age of 4 and began her studies of music and piano with Campos Coelho and Francine Benoît, continuing later in Germany, with Rosl Schmid and Karl Engel. In addition to her concerts, she has made recordings for Erato for fifteen years and Deutsche Grammophon for twenty years.

Since the 1970s, she has devoted herself to reflecting the influence of art in life, community and education, trying to discover new ways of establishing this way of thinking in society. She has searched for new ways which, respecting the development of individuals and cultures, encourage the sharing of ideas.

In 1999, she created the Centre for the Belgais Centre for the Study of the Arts in Portugal. Maria João Pires regularly offers interdisciplinary workshops for professional musicians and music lovers. In the Belgais concert hall concerts and recordings regularly take place. In future these will be shared with the international digital community (pay and non-pay).

In 2012, in Belgium, she initiated two complementary projects; the Partitura Choirs, a project which creates and develops choirs for children from disadvantaged backgrounds as in Belgium the „Hesperos Choir, and the Partitura Workshops. All of the Partitura projects have the aim to create an altruistic dynamic between artists of different generations by proposing an alternative in a world too often focused on competitiveness. This philosophy is being spread worldwide at Partitura projects and workshops.

Driven by an unwavering belief in the power of music to heal, unite and inspire, Gustavo Dudamel is one of the most distinguished conductors of our day. From the great concert halls to classrooms, video screens and cinemas, Dudamel’s remarkable career of musical achieve-ments and championing of access to the arts for young people around the world demonstrate music’s extraordinary ability to transform lives.

Dudamel’s 2018/19 season will centre around the centennial celebration of the Los Ange-les Philharmonic and his tenth year as their Music & Artistic Director. Other highlights of the season include his début at the Metropolitan Opera conducting Verdi’s Otello; tours with the Berlin Philharmonic, Munich Philharmonic and Mahler Chamber Orchestra; and his first ex-tended academic residency at Princeton University.

Under Dudamel’s direction, the LA Phil has become one of the leading orchestras in the world, admired for its unmatched commitment to new music, diversity and inclusion, and for the development of groundbreaking digital initiatives. The celebration of the LA Phil’s 100th season showcases the extraordinary versatility and vision of both the orchestra and Duda-mel himself, featuring more than 50 commissions from luminaries such as John Adams, Phi-lip Glass and Steve Reich, as well as leading young composers such as Julia Adolphe, Ashley Fure, Andrew Norman, Tyshawn Sorey, Kamasi Washington and Du Yun. Dudamel will lead cross-genre collaborations with Herbie Hancock, Moby and Andrew Bird, Beethoven’s five piano concertos with Lang Lang as soloist, a performance at the Academy Awards, a tour of Asia and more.

A lifelong advocate for music education and social development through art, Dudamel was shaped by his childhood experience with El Sistema, the extraordinary program of im-mersive musical training launched in 1975 by José Antonio Abreu. Entering his 19th year as Music Director of the Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra, Dudamel also carries on the work of his late mentor with an ongoing commitment to El Sistema in Venezuela, and by supporting numerous Sistema-inspired projects around the world, including Big Noise in Scotland, Vien-na’s Superar program, SerHacer in Boston and El Sistema Sweden.

His 2018 “Americas” tour with the Vienna Philharmonic featured an Art and Citizens-hip workshop in Mexico City that brought together 300 young people from across North and South America in an expression of cultural solidarity. He has worked to raise awareness of the importance of music education by visiting the United Nations and the White House, and he delivered a speech on the unity of the Arts and Sciences at the 2017 Nobel Prize Concert.

Dudamel also continues to expand the reach of his Youth Orchestra Los Angeles (YO-LA) initiative. Founded in 2007, the programme has provided access to quality music edu-cation to tens of thousands of children from underserved communities around Los Angeles. 2019 will see the construction of a new Frank Gehry-designed facility for YOLA in Inglewood, California.

One of the few classical musicians to truly reach mainstream audiences while maintai-ning the highest musical integrity, Gustavo Dudamel has been featured three times on CBS’ 60 Minutes and was the subject of a PBS special, Dudamel: Conducting a Life. He has been interviewed by Christiane Amanpour on CNN, Conan O’Brian on Conan, Stephen Col-bert on The Late Show and Elmo on Sesame Street. He had a cameo role in Amazon Studio’s award-winning series Mozart in the Jungle and, together with members of YOLA, became the first classical musician to participate in the Super Bowl Halftime Show, appearing alongside pop stars Coldplay, Beyoncé and Bruno Mars. In 2017, he was the youngest-ever conductor to lead the Vienna Philharmonic’s famous New Year’s Day Concert, watched annually by over 60 million people in 90 countries. At John Williams’ personal request, Dudamel guest-con-ducted on the soundtrack for Star Wars: The Force Awakens. He also recorded James Newton Howard’s soundtrack to Disney’s holiday blockbuster The Nutcracker, in which he makes an on-screen cameo. Dudamel’s cinema, TV, radio and online broadcasts have reached hundreds of millions of people around the world. Dudamel’s Grammy Award-winning discography al-so includes landmark recordings of John Adams’ Gospel According to the Other Mary (com-missioned and performed by the Los Angeles Philharmonic); the soundtrack to the motion picture Libertador, for which Dudamel composed the score; a Richard Strauss disc with the Berlin Philharmonic; Mahler Symphonies 5 and 7 with the Simón Bolívar Symphony Orches-tra; and Mahler 9 with the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Gustavo Dudamel is one of the most decorated conductors of his generation. In recogni-tion of his advocacy for the proliferation of the arts in the Americas, he received the 2018 Paez Medal of Art and the Pablo Neruda Order of Artistic and Cultural Merit, the Americas Socie-ty Cultural Achievement Award in 2016, and the 2014 Leonard Bernstein Lifetime Achieve-ment Award for the Elevation of Music in Society from the Longy School of Music. He was named Musical America’s 2013 Musician of the Year, one of the highest honours in the clas-sical music industry, and was voted into the Gramophone Hall of Fame. In October of 2011, he was named Gramophone Artist of the Year, and in May of that same year, was inducted in-to the Royal Swedish Academy of Music in consideration of his “eminent merits in the musi-cal art”. The previous year, he received the Eugene McDermott Award in the Arts from MIT. Dudamel was inducted into l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres as a Chevalier in Paris in 2009, and received an honorary doctorate from the Universidad Centroccidental Lisandro Alvarado in his hometown of Barquisimeto. Gustavo Dudamel was born in 1981 in Barquisimeto, Venezuela. He began violin lessons as a child with José Luis Jiménez and Francisco Díaz at the Jacinto Lara Conservatory. He continued his violin studies with Rubén Cova and José Francisco del Castillo at the Latin American Academy of Violin. His conducting studies began in 1993 when he was hired as an Assistant Conductor with the Amadeus Chamber Orchestra. In 1996, he studied with Rodol-fo Saglimbeni and was named Music Director of the Amadeus Chamber Orchestra. In 1999, he was appointed Music Director of the Simón Bolívar Youth Orchestra and began conduc-ting studies with the orchestra’s founder, Dr Abreu. Dudamel achieved international attention by winning the inaugural Bamberger Symphoniker Gustav Mahler Competition in 2004. He went on to become Music Director of the Gothenburg Symphony (2007-2012), where he cu-rrently holds the title of Honorary Conductor. Inspired by Dudamel’s early musical and men-torship experiences, the Gustavo Dudamel Foundation, a registered charity, was created in 2012 with the aim of promoting access to music as a human right and a catalyst for learning, integration and social change.

In the season 2018-2019 the Munich Philharmonic is celebrating its 125th anniversary. The orchestra was founded in 1893, and since then, under the direction of renowned conductors, it has vastly enriched Munich’s musical life. Gustav Mahler conducted the orchestra in the world pre-mières of his 4th and 8th Symphonies, and in November 1911, the world première of Mahler’s “Das Lied von der Erde” took place under Bruno Walter’s direction. Ferdinand Löwe led the first Bruc-kner concerts and established the orchestra’s Bruckner tradition, which was then gloriously conti-nued by Siegmund von Hausegger and Oswald von Kabasta.

During the Rudolf Kempe era the Philharmonic made its first tour to what was then the U.S.S.R. The legendary Bruckner concerts with general music director Sergiu Celibidache made a major contribution to the orchestra’s international reputation. With chief conductor James Levine the or-chestra won the prize for the “Best Concert Program in the 2002/2003 Season” from the German Music Publishers’ Association. The Munich Philharmonic made Zubin Mehta the first “conductor laureate” in the orchestra’s history. For the 100ths anniversary of the première of Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 8 in Munich, chief conductor Christian Thielemann conducted two performances of this work. He was succeeded as chief conductor by Lorin Maazel, who held the position until his death in 2014.

As of the 2015-16 season, the position of chief conductor of the Munich Philharmonic is held by Valery Gergiev. Tours have taken the Munich Philharmonic to numerous European cities as well as Japan, China, Korea, Taiwan and the USA. Programme highlights conceived by Valery Gergiev in-clude performances of symphonic cycles by Shostakovich, Stravinsky, Prokofiev and Rachmaninov as well as new formats, such as the “MPHIL 360°” festival. Concerts are regularly broadcast via live stream and on radio and TV. In September 2016, the first CD recordings documenting the Munich Philharmonic’s work were released under the orchestra’s own label, "MPHIL". Currently, the Mu-nich Philharmonic and Valery Gergiev are working on a complete recording of Anton Bruckner’s symphonies in the church of St. Florian abbey.

With "Spielfeld Klassik", the Munich Philharmonic has developed a comprehensive music education programme for young and old. Up to 35,000 people of all ages attended the more than 150 events held each year. Concerts for children, pupils and young people, opportunities for watching re-hearsals of the Philharmonic, demonstrations of musical instruments and concert subscriptions for school pupils and students provide especially children and young people with varied opportunities for listening to and learning about classical music and the day-to-day work of a large symphony or-chestra. Under the motto of "MPhil vor Ort" (MPhil on Site), the Munich Philharmonic also leaves its home base – the Philharmonie Gasteig – to appear in unusual and varied locations, such as the Hofbräuhaus tavern as well as alpine meadows, clubs and industrial halls.

She has performed at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, Teatro alla Scala, Semperoper Dres-den, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Hamburg State Opera, Netherlands Opera, Maggio Musicale Fio-rentino, Opera Company of Philadelphia and the Israeli Opera.

Highlights of this season and beyond include her débuts as Susanna (Le nozze di Figaro) and Aennchen (Der Freischutz) at the Vienna State Opera, where she will return in roles such as Zdenka (Arabella), Marzelline (Fidelio) and Sophie (Der Rosenkavalier). She will also perform in Mahler’s Symphony No. 2 with the Munich Philharmonic and tour across Europe under the baton of Gustavo Dudamel, Haydn’s The Seasons with the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra under Vladimir Jurowski, the solo roles of Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms and Ma-hler’s Symphony No. 4 in the opening season concerts of the Prague Radio Symphony Orches-tra, and Bernstein’s Symphony No. 3 ‘Kaddish’ with the Israel Philharmonic and Ilan Volkov.

This season, mezzo-soprano Tamara Mumford returns to the Metropolitan Opera for the Ring Cycle and will appear in concerts with the Cleveland Orchestra, Chicago Symphony Or-chestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic, and the Berlin Philharmonic both in Berlin and on tour in Asia. She will also make her début at the Santa Fe Opera in the world première of The Thir-teenth Child.

A graduate of the Metropolitan Opera’s Lindemann Young Artist Development Pro-gramme, Mumford has appeared in more than 140 performances with the company, some of which include L’Amour de loin, Anna Bolena, Rigoletto, Cavalleria Rusticana, Nixon in Chi-na, The Queen of Spades, The Magic Flute and Wozzeck with Kaija Saariaho. Other recent opera engagements have included Tancredi, Aureliano in Palmira and Lucrezia Borgia at the Caramoor Festival; Henze’s Phaedra, The Rape of Lucretia and the world première of Da-niel Schnyder’s Yardbird at Opera Philadelphia and L’incoronazione di Poppea at the Glynde-bourne Opera Festival and the BBC Proms.

Also an active concert performer and recitalist, Mumford has appeared with Gustavo Du-damel and the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra in US and European tours. Other concert engagements have included appearances with the New York Philharmonic, Cleveland Or-chestra, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, San Francisco Symphony, Berlin Philharmonic, Ne-therlands Radio Philharmonic, and at the Hollywood Bowl and the Ravinia and Tanglewood music festivals. In recital she has been presented in New York by the Marilyn Horne Founda-tion, the Frick Collection and the Metropolitan Museum of Art; and in Philadelphia by the Philadelphia Chamber Music Society.

Known as one of the country’s top amateur choirs, it was founded in 1891 by Lluís Millet and Amadeu Vives to disseminate Catalan and global choral repertoires, as well as to hone the artistic excellence of its performances. The conductor is Simon Halsey, who is accompanied by Pablo Larraz as assistant conductor and Josep Buforn as pianist. The choir has its home at the Palau de la Música Catalana, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Orfeó has performed the most renowned choral pieces and starred in Spain premières of famous works such as Bach’s Mass in B Minor and Haydn’s The Seasons. It has been conducted by leading figures from the international scene, including R. Strauss, C. Saint-Saëns, P. Casals, Z. Mehta, F. Brüggen, M. Rostropovich, Ch. Dutoit, L. Maazel, D. Barenboim, S. Rattle and G. Dudamel, among others. In recent years, the choir has made its début in the Vienna Konzerthaus and the Lisbon Gulbenkian Hall; toured Italy with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, conducted by D. Gatti; and performed in London on two occasions: first in 2015 at the Royal Festival Hall and then in 2017 at the Royal Albert Hall, with the Proms début. In October 2017, it performed the European première of Considering Matthew Shepard by Craig Hella Johnson at the Palau, under the direction of Simon Halsey.

In 2018, the Barcelona Grec Festival featured a performance by the Orfeó and the choirs of the Escola Coral of the Orfeó Català of The Monster in the Maze, a participatory opera by Jonathan Dove (music) and Alasdair Middleton (librettist). This Catalan version by Marc Rosich, under the direction of Simon Halsey and in a production of the Grec Festival and the Fundació Orfeó Català-Palau de la Música Catalana, marked the first time it was performed in Spain.

For the 2018-19 season, the Orfeó Català has a number of noteworthy international commitments, including its China tour as part of the Shanghai International Arts Festival (October 2018), and concerts with Gustavo Dudamel and the Münchner Philharmoniker at the Palau de la Música Catalana as well as in Madrid and Munich.

The young Ukrainian pianist Dmytro Choni will open the season’s Chamber Series. This emerging talent in the global piano scene, who has performed as a soloist with numerous European and American orchestras, recently won the First Prize and Golden Medal at the 2018 Paloma O'Shea Santander International Piano Competition. In this recital, he will undertake pieces of great technical complexity in a repertoire that includes Rhapsodies by Johannes Brahms and Alberto Ginastera’s renowned Sonata.

As part of this recital, Formentor Sunset Classics presents the young violinist Rubén Mendoza, one of the artists who, based on his achievements and results throughout his training process, has received the Barceló Hotel Group Grant.

Felipe graduated with honours from the Vienna Conservatory and started his international career as an orchestra conductor with the Cape Town Philharmonic in 1998. He was appointed honorary conductor of the Verein Orchestra in Schwechat (Lower Austria) and Chief Conductor of Vienna’s Schönbrunner Kappelle. Throughout Europe and America, he has performed with orchestras such as the Kammer-Philharmonie (Hungary), the Pressburger Symphoniker (Slovakia), the Spokane Symphony (USA), the Symphony Orchestra of the Balearic Islands (Spain) and the Innsbrucker Symphoniker (Austria). He has worked as a professor of musicology, musical interpretation and chamber music at the Balearic Islands Conservatory since 2009, and has been the Artistic Director of the Formentor Sunset Classics Festival since 2014.
