The first coins were made in Turkey in the 7th century BC and paper money

was invented by the Chinese about 1,000 years ago- but money hasn’t

always looked like this. In the distant past, stones, sea shells, cocoa beans

and salt were exchanged for other products in different parts of the world.

More recently, eggs were used as money in Guatemala in the 19th century.

Even in the 1970s, sweets were given as change in shops in parts of Italy

and in Vietnam, lipstick was accepted as payment. Today we think of money

as coins, banknotes and credit cards but, in fact, money can be anything

that is considered.
