momento a diferentes colectivos sociales.
aniversario: empleados, clientes, proveedores, colaboradores,
instituciones… y, por supuesto, a nuestras familias. Gracias por
compartir este camino con nosotros. Gracias por confiar en
Grupo Marjal.

Treinta años de vida
Javier Fur Quesada, Administrador de Grupo Marjal y
Sergio Gómez Sirvent, Responsable del Área Turística
This year more than ever, the corporate group has wished to
support and help different social groups in need. This firm
intention means in practice a fruitful collaboration with a lot
of institutions and associations which seek to encourage the
development of training, cultural and social activities. Grupo
Marjal does hereby wish to thank those organisations which
have placed their confidence in the company.
One of the initiatives that has been recently launched regards the
agreement reached by Grupo Marjal and the Fundación ROSE
CAM, which aims to promote a programme focused on dance
as therapy to help the integration of people with disabilities and
improve their ability to express themselves through dance.
For the third year in succession, the corporate group has run the
Sustainable Building Award, in which, as always, the University
of Alicante has closely collaborated. Moreover, in the same line
of support for environmental conservation and sustainability,
the sixth Business and Environment Award was organised along
with Miguel Hernández University. Grupo Marjal’s intention is to
keep on developing these kinds of initiatives and maintain their
commitment to others – thus strengthening their Corporate
Social Responsibility programme.
Grupo Marjal also wishes to reiterate their gratitude to all those
who have made the celebration of this 30th anniversary possible:
employees, customers, suppliers, collaborators, institutions…
and, of course, our families. Thanks for sharing this long but
rewarding path with us. Thanks for trusting Grupo Marjal.
Thirty years of history
This year Grupo Marjal is eagerly celebrating its 30th anniversary.
The company is aware that there is still a long road ahead, in
which constant innovation is, and will always be, an essential
mainstay of their future business.

apueste por I+D+i —innovación, desarrollo e
The student’s business proposal consists in
proving that a basic production of 20 kW power
in a company or home may be written off in
ten years, although from the fifth year on profits
start exceeding the investment itself. Moreover,
Fotovoltaicus World becomes a technical
consultancy project as regards solar energy for
household applications, showing that its use can
be beneficial not only for the environment but
also for household finances.
Grupo Marjal, as an entity which also develops
construction projects, is committed to both
the use of renewable energies and green
building which makes the most of new energy
sources, mainly solar power, due to its easy
implementation in homes.
“For Grupo Marjal, construction must be a
specialised sector devoted to R&D (research
and development and innovation) because
this will be the best way of creating wealth
without detriment to the environment. It will
also be the best way of being competitive
and environmentally friendly and, in short,
of becoming green and anticipating future
necessities – which is a basic pillar in every
company,” explained Francisco Gómez, General
Manager of the group.
“With projects like this one, the dependence on
energy, which in Spain is 80 %, can be gradually
reduced. The student’s project shows that with
common sense and first-class training solar
energy can be in this country, and particularly
in Alicante, a basic source of electricity supply
for thousands of homes and companies.” In
this respect, Grupo Marjal’s initiatives are being
adapted to this reality, as much for the investment
in energy savings as for it commitment to the
environment.
His project, entitled Fotovoltaicus World, is committed to the optimisation of solar energy from a business point of view.

GRUPO MARjAL y LA FUNDACIóN ROsE CAM sE UNEN PARA APOyAR UN PROGRAMA DE PsICOBALLET
La Fundación Rose Caja Mediterráneo y Grupo
Marjal, en colaboración con la Fundación
General de la Universidad de Alicante, han
aunado esfuerzos para poner en marcha un
nuevo proyecto de integración de personas de
la Asociación pro Discapacitados Psíquicos de
Alicante (APSA).

GRUPO MARjAL AND THE FUNDACIóN ROsE CAM jOIN TOGETHER TO sUPPORT A PROGRAMME OF BALLET FOR DIsABLED PEOPLE
The Fundación ROSE Caja Mediterráneo and
Grupo Marjal, in collaboration with the General
Foundation of the University of Alicante,
have joined forces to launch a new project
for the integration of people from APSA
(Alicante Association for Disabled People).
This is “Laboramusic”, a Social Responsibility
initiative developed together with the music
company “Bajo un mismo cielo” (Under the
Same Sky). The main goal of this programme is
to develop learning techniques through music
and movement both present in dance and self-
expression. This time, 45 people will benefit from
this initiative, which will last for 12 months.
Two main achievements derive from this
praiseworthy social project. On the one hand,
the publishing of a music CD entitled Chavales, chamos, pibes y zanahorios, all of which meaning
“kids and teenagers” in Spain, Venezuela,
Argentina and Colombia, respectively. And on
the other hand, the launch of ballet classes,
at which a team of qualified professionals
will give dance and self-expression lessons.
The latter seeks to promote the integration
of the participants whether at an individual,
group or social level, developing each of their
senses through coordination, memory and
concentration.

APSA, Isabel Manero.
Compromiso compartido
Fundación ROSE Caja Mediterráneo es una
innovadora propuesta que tiene como fin
conseguir la participación en iniciativas de
Responsabilidad Social Corporativa (RSC).
Se trata de una iniciativa que aglutina
a organizaciones cívicas y a compañías

Fundación ROSE Caja Mediterráneo is an
innovative organisation aimed at promoting
participation in Corporate Social Responsibility
programmes. It is an initiative which seeks to
amalgamate civic organisations and companies
with a social conscience wishing to engage
in social projects and support environmental
protection. On this occasion, Grupo Marjal, a
solid corporate group whose origins go back as

VIDA sloW, NADA Es IMPOsIBLE
Corremos detrás del
tiempo y estamos tan
ansiosos por vivir el futuro
que olvidamos vivir el aquí
y el ahora
sLOw LIFE, IMPOssIBLE Is
NOTHING
Mankind is, now more than ever, involved in a race against time, whose
finish line never seems to be reached – a race in which every split second
not only counts but also determines our existence. “On your marks, get
set, go!” is probably the maxim that applies to current society. Speed has
become the fate of our time; urgency, the leitmotiv of our actions. Our
lives are speeded up to a daily whirl, thus becoming disconnected from all
that surrounds us. We become obsessed about making the most of every
single second, worshipping a speed that we believe makes us better and
to which, unconsciously, we are addicted. We run after time and are so
eager to live the future that we miss the present. However, this roadrunner
culture is taking a toll on everything from our health, diet and work to our
community, personal relationships and the environment.
At the end of the 1980s, as an urgent need to counteract this ‘speedaholism’,
the Slow Movement was established – a cultural revolution that encourages
us to live a full life but at a slower pace as well as a to reconnect with
ourselves, our families, friends, community, other people and their cultures,
the environment, food, etc. The Slow Movement was also set up with the
aim of regaining our joy in a slower pace and the simple pleasures of life.
Another goal pursued is to help people to appreciate the simplicity of living
together in harmony with their social setting and the environment. And
the final objective defined is to create a less rigid but more relaxed and
happier work environment in which people can do, with pleasure, what
they are the best at.

Slow Travel, Slow School, Slow Education, Slow Reading, Slow Work, etc.
(Ciudad Slow, Turismo Slow, Escuela Slow, Educación Slow, Lectura Slow,
Trabajo Slow, respectivamente).
· Aprenda a decir no.
It was 1986 when, in Rome, Italian journalist Carlo Petrini encountered a
famous fast food restaurant in the very Piazza di Spagna. At that precise
moment he understood the dangers lying ahead for the eating habits of
society. Therefore, in protest against the homogenisation and automation
of the food industry and in direct opposition to the Americanisation of
a Europe obsessed about keeping up with those across the Atlantic,
the journalist launched the Slow Food Movement. The goal was crystal
clear: to protect local products and traditional food against the imminent
advance of fast food as well as to defend local producers’ interests, within
a sustainable framework and by respecting agricultural biodiversity as well
as warning against the evident risks of intensive agriculture.
As time went by, the Slow Movement gave way to the establishment of
different dimensions that applied to other life aspects – health, work,
education, sex and tourism, amongst others. So it is possible for us to join
movements such as the Cittaslow or Slow City, Slow Travel, Slow School,
Slow Education, Slow Reading, Slow Work, etc.
Criticism of speed is subtle. It is not about rejecting it per se, as it has many
benefits, but only its harmful aspects, because the effects of social stress,
for which we are paying a high price, usually have negative consequences
on our physical and mental health.
Although slowness is often related to negative values such as lack of
interest, apathy, passiveness or unskilfulness, “a slow attitude” should not
be translated as a less productive one. On the contrary, it is about doing
everything as well as possible, instead of as fast as possible. It is about
quality over quantity in every aspect of our lives from work to food to
parenting, etc.
Carl Honoré, Canadian journalist and author of In Praise of Slowness: How A Worldwide Movement Is Challenging the Cult of Speed, believes
that people are waking up to the madness of living in fast-forward and
discovering that by slowing down judiciously they do everything better and
enjoy everything more.
In short, slow philosophy may be summed up in just two words: balance
and harmony. It is about seeking the right equilibrium and not being
obsessively neurotic about time. We should try to find what musicians call
il tempo giusto, i.e. the right speed, in order to savour every minute of our
day rather than just counting them. The spiritual leader Mahatma Gandhi
said: “There is more to life than increasing its speed.” It is possible to take
your foot off the accelerator. A slow life is, all in all, a question of attitude.
It is a conscious decision.
Tips for a slow life· Maintain a good sleeping pattern. Get an adequate amount of sleep
each night.
· Take care to eat a diet rich in fruit and vegetables and low in fat.
· Take up a hobby which makes you feel serene.
· Do gentle exercise three times a week.
· Learn to say “No” to things to avoid getting over-scheduled.
· Do one activity at a time instead of many at once.
· Let yourself go where your thoughts take you.
· Do not set the alarm clock on weekends. Wake up when your body
clock is ready.
· Switch off your computer, mobile phone, etc. whenever possible.
· Eat slowly, chewing the food thoroughly before swallowing.

local; 2) enriquecer la experiencia del visitante;
GRUPO MARjAL ORGANIsED A CONFERENCE ON TOURIsM
Last May 13, Grupo Marjal organised a
conference entitled Tourism Today: Health, Culture and Environment. It was held at the
company’s headquarters, where well-known
experts and professionals of the tourism industry
gave their speeches. The event was mainly aimed
at informing the attendees about the current
and future situation of the tourism sector. They
also discussed about the development and
growing possibilities that Guardamar del Segura
has and how this town should cope with the
expansion of this sector as regards the three
aspects named in the conference title.
The conference was opened by the Mayoress of
Guardamar, Marylène Albentosa, the General
Manager of Grupo Marjal, Francisco Gómez,
and the Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Arts of the
University of Alicante (UA), Antonio Martínez
Puche. They gave a warm welcome to the
people present.
The first speech of the conference, which was
delivered by Alfonso Soler Gómis, PhD Sociologist
and lecturer in Education for Health at UA, dealt
with the role of conventional tourism compared
to health tourism and the actions that can be
undertaken to develop the latter. In this respect,
the speaker stressed the need for creating
synergies between the different sectors involved
in order to consolidate Guardamar’s position as
a tourist destination par excellence, thanks to
its well-planned infrastructure and countless
attractions.
Entitled Sustainable Tourism: Opportunities for the Future, the following talk was given by
Antonio Prieto Cerdán, UA lecturer in Planning
and Tourism Management. He analysed the
current situation of sustainable development
and tourism. Moreover, the expert pointed out
that sustainable tourism becomes possible when:
1) the quality of life of the local residents is
improved; 2) the visitors’ experience is enriched;
3) the quality of the environment, on which both
residents and tourists depend, is maintained
and even improved; 4) the profitability margin
of tourism for the benefit of the residents is
increased; and finally 5) profits are obtained by
businessmen in the tourism industry.

exquisitos caldos alicantinos.
After that, it was the turn of Luis Pablo Martínez,
from the Cultural Heritage Department of the
Valencian Community. His conference entitled
Cultural Heritage and Tourism focused on the
relationship between these two aspects in the
province of Alicante. The speaker highlighted
the fact that the creation of synergies between
the tourism industry and cultural heritage may
bring lots of benefits, such as the protection
and increase in value of the heritage sites,
the promotion of the tourism sector and local
identity, economic development, and finally the
improvement of the residents’ quality of life.
The latter benefit is regarded as an important
one, since a particular heritage site may also
acquire a social use, that is to say, it can be
enjoyed by the local people, who all in all are the
ones who take care of the tourist heritage site
of their community. In this respect, Luis Pablo
Martínez added that Guardamar has enormous
potential for the development of tourism based
on cultural heritage.
Afterwards, these words gave way to the speech
of the owner of Hoteles Poseidón Group,
Pere Joan Devesa, who revealed the basic
foundations on which the hospitality industry of
the Valencian Community is built. Furthermore,
the businessman outlined his optimistic vision
for the future of the tourism industry, which is
being threatened by the ongoing global credit
crunch. He also added that this is the moment to
be committed to creativity and reinvention if we
want to successfully overcome this situation.
After Pere Joan Devesa’s speech, a round of
questions was allowed, during which attendees
could not only voice and clear up their doubts
but also express their opinions and share their
experiences with the rest of the people present.
As a closing ceremony, both attendees and
speakers were invited to a special reception
offered by Bocopa winery, at which they had
the opportunity to taste a great variety of quality
wines of Alicante.
The event was
mainly aimed at
informing the
attendees about
the current and
future situation
of the tourism
sector.

ExPERTOs ANALIzAN LA EVOLUCIóN DE LA ACUICULTURA

EVOLUTION OF AqUACULTURE
Last May, the Guardamar Bay Aquaculture
Association (ACUMAR), to which Culmar – a
company of Grupo Marjal – belongs, organised
a conference on sustainable aquaculture.
The congress was held at the facilities of
CIMAR, the Marine Research Centre of Santa
Pola, in collaboration with the University of
Alicante (UA). Entitled Current Challenges to Aquaculture: Elements of Debate for Sustainable Development, the conference looked at the
present situation and future of the industry and
revealed the key factors in organic aquaculture.
The inaugural session was opened by the UA
Research Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Manuel
Palomar, and the Director of RIIA (Aquaculture
Industry Innovation Network), Ignacio Martínez.
Then the first speech was given by the Director
of the Animal Biology Department of the
Universidad Politécnica de Valencia, Miquel
Jover. The expert’s speech was about the role
of new species in aquaculture such as meagre,
octopus or red sea bream, among others.

Afterwards, two representatives of DIBAQ
company, biologist Eloy Meseguer and veterinary
surgeon José Luis Tejedor, offered their vision
of the most important point to be taken into
account as regards fish farming food. In their
speech, they stated that aquaculture appears to
be the only chance of achieving product supply
in an efficient, sustainable way. Moreover,
the experts stressed the need for applying
biotechnology in order to lessen the use of
antibiotics and so improving fish health.
The next speech was given by Pablo Sánchez,
from the UA Department of Oceanography and
Applied Biology. The speaker emphasised the
importance, on the one hand, of informing fish
farmers about the environmental impact on the
coast caused by fish farming and, on the other
hand, of introducing environmental certificates
for aquaculture facilities to guarantee sustainable
and responsible production. Likewise, Pablo
Sánchez highlighted the guidelines and principles
by which organic aquaculture should abide.
In this respect, Sánchez unveiled some statistics
of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO)
which show that by 2030 1.2 million tonnes of
fish farm organic products will be produced if
current trends continue. However, the expert
said that this development would depend on
both compliance with the said guidelines and
principles and the level of quality required
for the certificates to be instituted by those
countries interested in organic aquaculture. This
would guarantee sustainable production and a
commitment to use of natural elements that do
not damage the environment.
After that, Francisco Espinós, from ACUMAR-
UPV group, made a speech about the evolution
of the aquaculture market. Finally, the
conference was closed with a panel discussion
session, at which attendees and speakers could
draw significant conclusions. After the closing
ceremony of the congress, which was organised
in collaboration with Bocopa winery and Ostres
de la Badia, refreshments were served to all
participants.
In their speech, they stated
that aquaculture appears to be
the only chance of achieving
product supply in an efficient,
sustainable way

sIDROTERAPIA®, TOqUEs DE MANzANA PARA LA PIEL
Un nuevo mapa de sensaciones se
dibuja entre las paredes del spa de
la Hostería de Torazo, un ambiente
único con aroma a manzana y notas
de música que invitan a la relajación
mientras el paladar se baña con unas
gotas de una sidra única y especial…
Bajo esta atmósfera, el visitante
puede comenzar a deleitarse con la
sidroterapia®.
sIDROTERAPIA®, A TOUCH OF APPLE
FOR yOUR sKIN
A new map of sensations is being
drawn on the walls of Hostería de
Torazo – a unique ambience with a
tantalizing aroma of fresh apples
and the sound of background music
which incite us to relax, while our
palates taste a few drops of a unique,
special cider. In this atmosphere,
guests have the opportunity to
treat themselves to sidroterapia®
(Cidertherapy).
Apple: the forbidden fruit, the reason why Adam
and Eve were expelled from paradise –a heart-
shaped fruit with a variety of different colours
and tastes. But also, the apple is the symbol of
the land of Asturias, in whose green extensive
meadows they are grown to be used not only
in desserts but also for making one of the best
drinks you can taste: Asturian cider.
The elixir of Asturias is the perfect accompaniment
to long-lasting, unsurpassable lunches and
dinners for both the land’s inhabitants and
travellers. According to the tradition, cider
has always been present in family and social
gatherings. However, a new use has been found
for this golden drink at Hostería de Torazo. This
is Sidroterapia® (Cidertherapy), an exclusive
and innovative beauty treatment which offers
clients the best of this traditional drink.

completa, masaje y circuito Spa.

Marjal - j’hayber Padel Tournament
Camping Marjal has increased the number of its
sports facilities by building two new synthetic
turf Padel courts. Padel tennis (or just Padel) is
a racquet sport played extensively in Spain and
Latin America. It is typically played in doubles on
an enclosed court about half the size of a tennis
court. The biggest difference is that the court
has walls and the balls can be played off them in
a similar way as in the game of squash.
Through this initiative, the campsite is seeking
to strengthen the area of its sports facilities
and also to complement its current health and
leisure service catalogue. In this respect, the
managers of the campsite have already started
proceedings so that the new Padel facilities may
host different tournaments taking place locally
and provincially. In fact, these two new Padel
courts were inaugurated during the 1st Marjal
- J’hayber Padel Tournament, which was held
during the first and second weekends of July.
The winners of the first category were awarded
a weekend stay at Hostería de Torazo Hotel-Spa,

It is worth mentioning that not only the registered
Padel players were allowed to benefit from the
campsite facilities, but also their families had
the opportunity to enjoy them. Grupo Marjal
granted all of them a free pass to make the most
of the services at the complex. So while some
competed in the tournament, others treated
themselves to a refreshing and relaxing dip in
the tropical swimming pool.
In addition to this tournament, the campsite has
organised Padel lessons, both for individuals and

year. The complex’s customers will also benefit
from interesting sports and leisure offers, such
as Padel court hire, a sports store, etc.

A new way of understanding cuisine was introduced some years ago at Viveros Huerto del Cura in Elche, province of Alicante. This avant-garde concept of food led to the creation of gastrobotany, a culinary trend that has captivated both chefs and palates.
The originality of this innovative movement lies in the idea of combining two
worlds which are so close to each other, namely, plants and gastronomy, but
by introducing new and different parts of the plants (roots, stems, flowers
or seeds), which thus far have been rarely used in traditional cuisine. The
role of conventional products loses weight in gastrobotany, thus leading to
the use of plants that up to now have not been considered as food.
This trend – which was started thanks to the innovative characters of
Santiago Orts, biologist and manager of Viveros Huerto del Cura, and
Rodrigo de la Calle, Madrid Fusión 2009 Best New Chef – has already been
embraced by haute cuisine in order to offer the most sophisticated palates
surprising tastes in every dish.
This trend is amazing, and so is its beginning. The idea began to evolve
in 2003, when its creators started growing dates by previously selecting
palm trees from the Palmeral (palm groves) of Elche, declared a UNESCO
World Heritage Site in 2000. From then on, those who are regarded as the
founders of gastrobotany committed themselves to diversity and started to
do research into the possibility of applying the same method to other plant
families, such as the citrus family.

cuya piel verde y aterciopelada transmite fragancias intensas.

Gastrobotany
represents a new way
of viewing cuisine,
which finds inspiration
in the delicacies of the
kingdom Plantae
Some products…
Finger lime: it is pearly and translucent with a citric aroma, which makes
it the perfect accompaniment to shellfish and raw fish, such as sushi o
sashimi.
Citron: its oil is ideal for patisserie.
Dragonfly: it is a very little and juicy orange with a delicate flavour and a
very aromatic green and velvety skin.
Icy lettuce: this lettuce, which comes from the ice plant grown at the
Huerto del Cura has a slightly salty flavour. It an ideal accompaniment to
cold dishes.
Pear lemon: so named due to its shape; its texture and taste resembles
that of an orange, but it is slightly bitter.
Buddha’s Hand: also known as a “Fingered Citron”, is rich in essential oils
and its aroma is reminiscent that of lemon and orange blossom. Due to its
flavouring power, its zest is widely used.
Fresh date: in the groves of Elche, more than a hundred species of dates
are grown. They are sweet-scented and soft.
One of the outcomes of gastrobotanical studies is the “Season Clock”,
a chromatic chart which shows the seasonal availability of products. By
means of this chart it is possible to learn that, for example, icy lettuces or
citrons are grown in winter. Also it shows how the arrival of the summer
gives way to the germination of the anemone, carissa or cordifole, among
others.
Gastrobotany represents a new way of viewing cuisine, which finds
inspiration in the delicacies of the kingdom Plantae (fruits, herbs and other
plants whether wild or cultivated) found in Nature, which are available for
chefs and diners throughout the year thanks to the growing techniques.

Villena: José Antonio Espinosa, Paola Ribera y

Between Spinning and Swing is the title of the
winning project in the Third Sustainable Building
Award organised by Grupo Marjal. This award
is given to the best sustainable architecture
proposal put forward by teams of students from
different degree programmes in Architecture,
Technical Architecture and other disciplines at
the University of Alicante (UA).
This year, the winners were three students from
Villena – José Antonio Espinosa, Paola Ribera and
José Ignacio Navarro. Their project was highly
valued by the members of the jury. They stressed
the outstanding proposal which achieved an
excellent balance between architecture and
land, because it propounded a group system
of manufacture, assembling and dismantling of
the dwellings. Moreover, the winning students
suggested three interesting ideas: a remarkable
treatment of outdoor spaces as regards the use
of indigenous vegetation, adaptation of passive
energy systems and, finally, an interesting
house layout adapted to the particular weather
conditions of the place chosen.
The jury also considered that Between Spinning and Swing competently and knowingly dealt
with the recovery of artificial land, proposing
architectural practices that restore the ruined,
overbuilt landscape and give it back its
original value. This may be achieved by means
of innovative and clever solutions which
enable simple assembling and dismantling of
dwellings.
The award giving ceremony was presided over
by the UA Vice-Chancellor, Ignacio Jiménez

Chancellors of University Outreach; Institutional
Affairs; Infrastructure, Land Management and
Environment; and Research, Development and
Innovation were also present at the ceremony,
along with other University authorities.
The Mayoress positively valued this private
initiative launched by Grupo Marjal, since
interrelationship between companies and the
academic institution may foster the development
of new ideas by young people – thus giving rise
to innovative projects with a common objective:
sustainability.
Francisco Gómez, for his part, showed his pride
in the evolution of the contest and the excellent
ideas put forward on this occasion. Moreover,
he added that Grupo Marjal actively takes part
in this Award, as one of its main goals is the
development of ecological and sustainable
projects, based on the preservation of the
environment and a construction process which is
not detrimental to the quality of the ecosystems
but compatible with it.

Manuel Belso y Manuel Mora; Demanufacture,
bioclimatismo, dadas nuestras excepcionales
alcanzado. Y, desde luego, estos dos caminos
deben converger en un punto.

The distinguished architect César Ruiz-Larrea has
been in charge of tutoring the undergraduates
who participated in the 3rd Sustainable Building
Award, a contest organised by both Grupo
Marjal and the University of Alicante (UA).
The architect is the Manager of Ruiz-Larrea &
Asociados, a studio which, with a qualified team
of more than 25 professionals, has developed a
wide range of projects characterised by “a style
of architecture committed to our planet.”
“How would you define the concept of
sustainable architecture?”
“It’s simply including what is required by society
to every project in order to change the way of
doing things and contribute to, for instance,
reducing energy consumption and greenhouse
gas emissions, safeguarding the environment
and using renewable energies, etc. In short, it
is about changing the current model and always
demanding an architecture which is, above all,
sustainable.”
“How would you describe Spanish architecture
in terms of sustainability? Do you think there is
more to do in this field?”
I think we are in a privileged position to be a
benchmark as regards green building, given
our exceptional sources of solar energy and
wind power. However, if we don’t modify our
architectural planning and construction, this will
be useless.”
“What differences and, especially, what
advantages are there when comparing
sustainable architecture to the buildings designed
under traditional architectural guidelines?
It isn’t about differences or advantages. It’s a
question of understanding that the architectural
models used up to now have caused a negative
impact to our environment. Therefore, it’s
absurd to keep on building under the same
criteria which have brought about these
problems. But this has nothing to do with
traditional architecture. On the contrary, when
traditional architecture employs intellectual
sense – and therefore, building is adapted to the
environmental and cultural context –, it really is
of a sustainable nature. In fact, the influence
of traditional architecture is undoubtedly more
present than ever. But of course, we have to
incorporate technological advances in design
so as to not lessen the levels of social comfort
achieved up to now. And, certainly, these two
paths are compatible.”
The members of the jury – César Ruiz-Larrea,
Professor of Architecture at the School of
Architecture of Madrid and Vice-Chairman of
the Sustainability and Architecture Association,
Antonio Serrano, José Amorós, Gustavo Furest,
Emilio Orts and Sofía Blasco – agreed to award
special mentions to the following projects: The Patio of my House is Particularly Colourful, by
Juan Domingo Bañón and Estefanía Mompean;
Zig-Zag, by Sara Blaya and Javier Cuenca; Rock ya House, by Juan Blasco and Sara Gimeno; Oasis 22, by Carlos Alcaraz, Manuel Belso and Manuel
Mora; and finally, Demanufacture, by Antonio
Cantón. Moreover, the jury also awarded a prize
to Allegro in G major, by Taras Agryzcou and
Gemma Montesinos.
At the end of the ceremony, Architect César
Ruiz-Larrea delivered a very interesting speech
on new sustainable and energetically self-
sufficient construction methods. This was
entitled Architectural Envelope: Reflections on its Evolution.

nuevo paradigma.

“It’s been proved that there is a real need to
incorporate renewable energy technologies in
architecture. Is it still a chimera?”
It’s an issue that still needs to be addressed. We
need to elaborate a new dialog which includes
modern techniques in every architectural project.
Sustainability in architecture is a must.”
“Which one of your projects are you most
satisfied with?”
“In general, all my projects are intended to be
steps or links in a research project to find the
architectural ideal which I pursue. But the last
project is the one that makes me feel most
delighted because it’s the most recent.”
“In a career full of flagship building works,
which project have you always dreamed of but
haven’t been able to realise?”
“Undoubtedly, the 400 metre high Wind Tower
I designed for Dubai, which for market reasons
wasn’t developed. It was a fantastic, ambitious
project.”
“As regards your work as the tutor of the students
who took part in this year’s Sustainable Building
Award of the University of Alicante, what’s your
assessment of the green architecture ideas put
forward by these professionals-to-be?”
“Significantly positive, since they’re capable of
generating ideas to change the current model,
which is an essential task. A new sensitivity is
making itself felt and students are showing
more interdisciplinary knowledge and are more
committed to the environment.”
“Do you think that in the short term current
undergraduates can have an important role in
the development of this kind of architecture? Or
are public institutions and private corporations
the ones who can ensure that the building
industry and sustainability go hand in hand?
“I reckon it’s about cooperation between all
the parties concerned. Team work is essential
and each professional should have their own
responsibilities and scope for innovation. But
clearly, students must be the seed of the new
model.”

GRUPO MARjAL LOGRA EL PRIMER CERTIFICADO DE VIVIENDA sOsTENIBLE EN LA COMUNIDAD VALENCIANA
GRUPO MARjAL Is AwARDED THE FIRsT CERTIFICATE IN sUsTAINABLE BUILDING IN THE VALENCIAN COMMUNITy
The Building Institute
of Valencia granted
the company
recognition for its
sustainable building
project, which reduces
energy consumption
by up to 80 %
and efficiently and
rationally manages
natural resources
Bernadagolf, a company which belongs to Grupo
Marjal, has been the first construction company
to be awarded the certificate of “Excellence in
Energy Saving and Sustainable Use of Natural
Resources”. This certificate is part of the Quality
Programme set up by the Building Institute of
Valencia, an official body belonging to the
Autonomous Government of Valencia. The said
certificate means well-deserved recognition for
the enormous effort channelled by Grupo Marjal
into implementing new construction practices
committed to “green building”, rational energy
consumption and environmental preservation.
Grupo Marjal has introduced significant
improvements in its projects as regards
insulation, which may reduce heat loss by 70 %
compared to traditional construction methods.
This implies insulating ceilings, floors, windows
and doors – thus allowing a better use of the
heating and air conditioning systems. Moreover,
in order to lessen power consumption, Marjal
dwellings have installed a system that leads to
the effective production of the solar energy for
the supply of 80 % of all the hot water needed
for domestic use. This is achieved by reducing
the distance between the water cistern and the
points of use. With the same goal, LED lamps
are installed in each dwelling so as to reduce
electricity consumption by up to 85 %. Besides
this, the properties built by Grupo Marjal feature
a state-of-the-art heating system (which also
serves to supply hot water for domestic use)
based on a biomass boiler in which wood pellets
are burnt. Wood pellets are an ecological and
renewable energy which allows a neutral CO2
balance.
What is more, these properties were also
designed to efficiently improve water
consumption. On the one hand, there is a water
discharge reducer installed in the piping systems.
On the other hand, the WC cisterns are smaller
and have a special double system that reduces
water consumption, thus leading to significant
economic and environmental benefits. The most
innovative technique implemented consists in
reusing rainwater and grey water after recycling
and filtration processes for its later usage in WC
cisterns or watering and irrigation.
As a result of this measures, Grupo Marjal has
become a leading construction company in the
Valencian Community as regards development
of “green building”. The construction of “green
homes” is conditioned by stricter demands
relating to sustainability and reduction of
pollution. Currently, these green measures are
being applied to the building project of Villas
de la Romana developed by the company in the
Medio Vinalopó region of Alicante.

nuevas oportunidades.
Last April, a conference on new business
opportunities was held at the headquarters of
Grupo Marjal. The topic was discussed from
different angles but without forgetting the
current economic situation. The convention was
organised by the Asociación de Empresarios del
Bajo Segura (Association of Businessmen and
Women of the Bajo Segura Region – AEBS) and
the Asociación de Empresarios del Polígono Santa
Ana (Santa Ana Industrial Estate Association
of Businessmen and Women – ADEPSA). The
speech, which was delivered by Yira Labrador and
Rosa Torres from the Department of Initiatives
for Employment (Gabinete de Iniciativas Para
el Empleo – GIPE) of the University of Alicante,
dealt with the situation of crisis from an original
perspective: by reference to traditional sayings.
During the
conference, the
speakers pointed out
that creativity and
innovation are the key
factors to successfully
overcome a situation.
BUsINEss OPPORTUNITIEs FROM A DIFFERENT POINT OF VIEw
The conference was aimed at helping attendees
to think rationally, face fears and act accordingly.
Besides, the speakers focused attention on the
need for adapting the ways of overcoming a
particular situation according to the position of
each person. In this respect, they explained to
the audience that every person sees reality in a
different way, and this implies that their ways
of looking for new opportunities consequently
differ. And so do the results. In other words,
faced with the same situation, some people may
be strengthened while others may encounter
failure in their attempts to deal with a given
circumstance.
During the conference, the speakers pointed
out that creativity and innovation are the key
factors to successfully overcome a situation. In
this regard, they highlighted the importance of
solving problems promptly and distinguishing
the potential of new ideas. They also drew
the conclusion that access to technology
may be another key element in fostering and
strengthening the development of businesses.
Afterwards, both the speakers and the
attendees discussed the aspects of positive
reframing and its advantages for overcoming
difficult moments. One of the basic ideas which
arose from the speech was that sometimes
negative circumstances may bring about
something positive. A problem may give rise to
complications and opportunities at the same
time. We simply have to identify the former and
take advantage of the latter.
The general conclusion of the conference was
that values such as effort and commitment
could turn storm into calm.

o conocimientos, a

TIME As A CURRENCy
Time banks, in which the unit of exchange is not money but man-hour, encourages the exchange of services, skills and knowledge between people, giving rise to a sense of solidarity and empathy
The Real Academia Española (the official royal institute responsible for
regulating the Spanish language) defines “time” as “a component of the
measuring system used to sequence events which succeed one another
from the past through the present to the future”. Time is, however, more
than a unit of measurement. Benjamin Franklin said that “time is money”
and he was probably not wrong, since today having some spare time is
almost as prized as a decent salary.
“Time Banking” had its intellectual genesis in the U.S. in the early 1980’s
and nowadays this system is being widely welcomed and undertaken in
Spain. The philosophy of time banking states that “we are all an asset, we
all have something to give”, according to Red-BdT.org (a project of the
STRO Foundation – Social Trade Organization – aimed at promoting time
banks and other initiatives of social economy).
Consequently, time banks were launched some decades ago, “with the
aim of providing a solution to the money shortage in some Third World
countries”, as Red-BdT.org explains. Some years later, this initiative was
undertaken by some developed countries in order to “solve one of the
most serious problems of the modern world: social integration and the
sense of belonging to a community.” So it is about a system that boosts
social relationships and equality between the members of different
socioeconomic strata.

querer
tiempo para aprender, para pensar, para
saber.
Extracto de la canción “Tiempo” del disco
De vuelta y vuelta de Jarabe de Palo
Time banks are a reciprocal service exchange which do not use money
as currency but units of time – one hour equals one service credit. In this
system, one person volunteers to work for an hour for another person;
thus, they are credited with one hour, which they can redeem for an hour
of service from the same or another volunteer. Therefore, it is a system of
mutual trust, by means of which solidarity and empathy is created among
its members.
The following is an example of how time banks work: a university student
who lives away from home needs somebody to sew the hems of his
trousers; the seamstress who renders this service needs in turn some help
to buy some flight tickets on the Internet, so she turns to a computer
expert who, for his part, needs to take German lessons and he contacts
a teacher who in turn needs somebody to take care of her child on a
Time is a word
That starts and ends
That can be drunk until there is no more
That runs slowly and goes past quickly.
Time is a word
That is turned on and off
You can neither have it nor can you catch it
It does not turn back nor does it stop.
Time does not cease
It cannot be bought or sold
Or grasped or seized
It is hated or loved
Nobody can talk to time
It cannot be heard or silenced
It passes by to never happen again
It falls asleep and never deceives.
Time for understanding, playing and loving.
Time for learning, thinking and knowing.
Translation of an excerpt of the song
Tiempo from the album De vuelta y vuelta
by Jarabe de Palo

Friday evening; the babysitter, for her part, wants somebody to teach her
how to cook… In short, time banking builds community and encourages
reciprocity in helping.
The services offered through time banks depend on the amount of
members they have. The more the members, the more the services. So
the possibilities are countless, as many as the people involved in this
kind of social network. The services, which depend on members’ abilities
and knowledge, are determined during personal interviews held before
commencing the exchange.
Experts emphasise the importance of reciprocity, cooperation and respect
for all human beings. Exchanges help to rebuild the infrastructure of trust
and caring that can strengthen families and communities, because “we
all have the opportunity to give and receive and, therefore, we become
productive members of our community,” say the people responsible at
Red-BdT.org. Besides, they add that “after a while, time banking forges
stronger intra-community connections, a process known as ‘building social
capital’.”

LAs MEjOREs EsTRATEGIAs EMPREsARIALEs PARA AFRONTAR EL FUTURO
Desarrollar estrategias empresariales efectivas

THE BEsT BUsINEss sTRATEGIEs TO FACE THE FUTURE Developing effective managerial strategies
in order to ease the current economic crisis
was the main goal pursued in the conference
promoted by the Asociación de Empresarios

– ADEPSA) and the Asociación de Empresarios
del Bajo Segura (Association of Businessmen
and Women of the Bajo Segura Region – AEBS).
Entitled Managerial Strategies in Moments of Crisis: Cases of Successful Businesses, the
event was held at the headquarters of Grupo
Marjal. The speaker was José María Gómez
Gras, Professor of Business Organisation and
Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Economic Affairs,
Employment and Business Relations of Miguel
Hernández University of Elche.
The conference examined the practice and theory
around the business world and at all times held
the attention of the large number of attendees
who gathered at Grupo Marjal’s conference hall.
Gómez Gras defined the grounds of strategic
thinking for businessmen as an essential tool for
company management. The lecturer set out the
reasons why some firms lose while some others
win in moments of crisis, and which the main
differences between them are.
In order to give a response to the issue brought
up, this expert in business organisation set
out case studies of successful companies so
as to analyse them. The professor highlighted
that it is essential to study the characteristics
of the business function of the company in a
competitive environment in order to detect
whether it is the most appropriate business
pattern applicable. Competitive positioning
was another complex issue discussed in the
conference. In this respect, different ways to
find the perfect positioning of companies were
also explored.
During the conference, very interesting and
illustrative case studies were put forward for the
purpose of understanding both the reasons why
profitability differs from one industry to another,
and which the forces that determine the nature
of each sector are. Moreover, the different
definitions of business, creativity and innovation
in companies were analysed along with business
competitiveness and the origin of competitive
advantages. These issues were intended to help
attendees to understand why in times of crisis
some companies go out of business while others
remain almost unaffected.
Gómez Gras
defined the grounds
of strategic thinking
for businessmen
as an essential
tool for company
management.
Finally, the professor identified the factors that
explain which the best positioning is if we want
to set the crisis aside and get better results than
those of our competitors. Furthermore, the plans
for success and strategic development which
would foster external support to a company
were drawn up.

wEB 2.0, LA REVOLUCIóN DE LA VIDA onlinewEB 2.0, A REVOLUTION IN LIFE ONLINE
With the advent of the Internet, our daily routine has changed, since
many of our tasks can be done from the computer. For millions of people
Internet is today an essential tool, a place in which to look for information,
communicate, buy, sell and have fun with no need to leave home; and
everything is just one click away.
Cyberspace, in the course of its evolution, has coined a new term:
“Web 2.0”, which refers to what is perceived as a second generation
of web development and web design. It is characterised as facilitating
communication, information sharing, interoperability, and collaboration
on the World Wide Web. Web 2.0 is a new way of understanding the
Internet, a new philosophy which makes cybernauts the main players of
the Internet itself.
The constant evolution of the World Wide Web has led to a significant
change in social relationships. The well-known “ users’ communities” have
turned into a new meeting place for Net users who want to mix with
their peers. This new phenomenon means a complete revolution, since it
is possible to contact former classmates or be up-to-date with the most
important events in the lives of relatives, friends or acquaintances who
are abroad with just a few details, such as the name of the city they live
in or the school they used to go to. Social-networking sites have fostered
reunions with and the exchange of information between people who,
otherwise, would not have seen each other or would only have had contact
from time to time.

herramienta imprescindible
para millones de personas,
un lugar en el que se puede
buscar información, comprar,
vender, comunicarse y
divertirse sin salir de casa
Main social-networking sites:
Facebook: founded in the United States in 2004. It is available in English,
French, Spanish and German, among others. It is reportedly the social-
networking site with the highest number of active members worldwide.
Tuenti: is a Madrid-based, invitation-only private social networking website
set up in 2006. The site is targeted at a Spanish audience, mainly teenagers
and young people. It is the most famous among Spanish students.
Twitter: launched in San Francisco in 2006, it is a free social networking
and micro-blogging service that enables its members to send and read
other users’ updates known as tweets.
Myspace: created in 2003, the site is aimed at musicians because it allows
artists to upload their entire discographies consisting of MP3 songs,
although it has many kinds of users worldwide.
For millions of people the Internet
is today an essential tool, a place
in which to look for information,
communicate, buy, sell and have
fun with no need to leave home
The great expansion of the social-networking sites has brought up the
question of whether it is possible for one-to-one relationships to change.
A simple website allows us to be open to the world and show people our
tastes, hobbies, the passages from our favourite books or how our last trip
was. Therefore, social-networking sites have become places where we can
meet other people who share our tastes and interests, although they might
be on the other side of the globe, thus creating the possibility of bonds of
love or friendship.
But the Internet is even more than this. Web 2.0 has not only contributed
to the spreading of social-networking sites but also has encouraged the
use of the Internet for daily tasks which before were done “on the street”
and now can be done from home. One of the most used applications
is e-commerce. Big and small companies from all over the world have
launched their online stores, which implies less costs for them because such
a great investment in infrastructure and human resources is not needed –
thus widening profit margin. While traditional commerce seems to tend, if
not to disappear, to decrease, online stores keep on growing and gaining
more followers. According to the Spanish Telecommunications Market
Commission, the e-commerce income in Spain has increased by 50%
during the last quarter in 2008 compared to the same period in 2007.
Online sales have had a great deal of success due to the fact that Net
users have welcomed the possibilities offered when buying any kind of
item on the Internet. Users may, with just one click, get whatever they
are looking for, such as clothing, specialised products, items difficult to
find in the market, etc. Not to mention the prices – users can find special
offers and bargain prices. And now that online buyers have managed to
overcome their fear of buying a product without first having examined it
and of giving their bank details for payment, e-commerce seems to be far
from peaking. Both banks and main online companies have worked out
some successful formulas which facilitate safe purchases as well as the
return or refund of the products – countless advantages which are being
enjoyed by billions of users.
The fact is that Internet is becoming much more than a place in which to
look for some specific information. Every day there are more and more
Net users who surf the Internet to carry out a wide range of tasks. And
according to the latest research conducted by Novartis’ NetObserver, Spain
is one of the EU countries with the highest number of Web 2.0 users.

itinerarios.

If the Costa Blanca has a wide array of spectacular inland tourist attractions
to offer, no less impressive is the seabed of this Mediterranean region. In
the province of Alicante, the depths of the sea give the lovers of scuba
diving countless possibilities of enjoying matchless experiences.
From north to south, Alicante promises a great variety of amazing spots to
go diving and appreciate the biodiversity of the Mediterranean. Starting in
northern Alicante, we find Dénia, a town with 20 km of coast which houses
“El Tangó” marine reserve, only accessible by boat. Here it is possible to
see underwater meadows of Posidonia – marine plants (“seagrass”) found
in the waters of the Mediterranean – and species such as octopuses, red
starfish up to 25 cm long or Chromis fish.
Heading towards the south of the province we reach Altea, a town
with an emblematic old quarter which invites tourists to wander around
its cobblestone alleys and admire stunning sunsets from the town’s
observation point. Important places for scuba diving are the Isla Mitjana
(Mitjana Islet) off the Sierra Gelada coast, the Cueva de Elefante (Elephant

as Baños de la Reina (the Queen’s Baths), which has two attractions: a very
important Roman archaeological site as well as an amazing underwater
route. The latter will enable divers to explore natural pools which form little
labyrinths, whose walls are covered with Udotea petiolata algae.
Another of the most important underwater points of interest on the Costa
Blanca is, undoubtedly, the island of Tabarca. One of the most outstanding
diving itineraries in this area allows diving lovers to observe some vessels
which lie on the seabed 60 feet below the sea surface. These boats are
usually inhabited by Mediterranean moray eels and European congers.
Tabarca is 12 nautical miles off Alicante city and is 1,800 metres long. The
seabed that surrounds the island may be of great interest to divers. The
part which is called La Galera stands out for its caves and little tunnels full
of Posidonia meadows, where scuba divers will be able to enjoy the rich
seabed of this nature reserve.
