El viernes, 16 de diciembre, la VicegobernadoraHealey llevó a cabo una mesa redonda para discutirproblemas relacionados con la violencia de lasgangas y las dos iniciativas que ella ha introducidoen la legislatura destinada a disminuir el crimen delas gangas.
Durante el próximo pasado mes de febrero,Healey introdujo una legislación para proteger a lostestigos principales de los crímenes de las gangas depeligrosas situaciones de amenazas de muerte, dandoa la jurisprudencia las herramientas necesarias paraprotegerlos y facilitarles a ellos elevar cargos encontra de los que intenten silenciar a los testigos.
“La justicia no puede ser aplicada a menos quecríticos testigos puedan testificar sin miedo arepresalias”, dijo Healey. “Estamos enviando un claromensaje a aquellos que intenten violar la ley, la justiciaprevalecerá”.
Bajo la propuesta legislación, los fiscales podránimponer castigos para aquellos que intenteninfluenciar y entrometerse en casos intimidando apotenciales testigos. Cualquiera que amenace olesione a un testigo se le castigará con una pena de10 años en una prisión estatal y además será multadocon $5,000 de fianza. Si serias lesiones ocurren, lasentencia puede ser elevada a 20 años y una multa de$5,000.

Llegamos muy cerca de elegir al primer alcalde latinoen esta ciudad y nuestra comunidad se dividióterriblemente en el proceso. Algunos demandaron apoyoabsoluto sin vacilación negándoles el derecho de razonary escoger el candidato que más se asemeja a sus ideales.El resultado: insultos, amistades tronchadas y losobstinados se niegan a examinar la causa de la derrota.
Como los Peregrinos de 1620, nosotros vinimosbuscando la libertad que este país nos garantiza y en sulugar, estamos siendo intimidados por fanáticos de lapolítica.
Nuestro deseo esta Navidad y para el Año Nuevoes simplemente que nos detengamos a apreciar losvalores que tenemos entre los residentes, aunquetengamos diferencias de opiniones durante las elecciones.

This past year has been particularly hectic forLawrencians. We experienced one of the worst politicalraces in recent years and it left very deep wounds inmany of our residents.
We came very close to electing the first Latino mayorin this city and our community became terribly dividedin the process. Some demanded unwavering supportdenying them the right to reason things out and choosethe candidate that best suited their ideals. The end result:Insults, name calling, broken relationships and theobstinate refused to examine the cause for the defeat.
Like the Pilgrims of 1620, we came looking for thefreedom this country guarantees and instead, we arebeing intimidated by political fanatics.
Our wish this Christmas and for the New Year issimply that we take the time to appreciate the valuesthat we have among our residents, even if our opinionsdiffer at election time.
Next year appears to be a similar one with the racefor State Representative. Let’s respect each other,please.

Con su lema más cerca de la verdad ysin ninguna intención de acuerdo, a sueditor Roberto Rodríguez, de venir a dañarel trabajo ni la trayectoria de ninguno de losmedios escritos existentes en el área, nacióeste pasado martes “Latino News”, unperiódico editado y producido por laempresa de publicidad Hispanic IdeasMedia, propiedad de los comunicadoresSantiago Matías y Milagros Domínguez.
La puesta en circulación y presentaciónde dicho periódico, que será publicadosemanalmente se realizó en el RestaurantDaysi G’s con la presencia de comerciantes,empresarios, comunicadores ypersonalidades de la vida política de laciudad.
El contenido de este periódico estaráenfocado en noticias nacionales,internacionales, regionales, temas locales,temas de opinión y deportes, entre otros.
Asimismo contiene un suplementollamado “Vive” en el cual se puedenencontrar artículos de Farándula, salud,entretenimiento, etcétera.
El editor de Latino News manifestó queel semanario no nacía movido por el ánimode desplazar a ninguno de los medios queya existen.

Trabajando mano a mano con la Comunidad Latina

El pasado sábado se llevó a cabo lapresentación de los miembros de la juntadirectiva de una organización que estáenfocada a llevar el mensaje sobre laimportancia de la prevención para combatirla terrible enfermedad del HIV.
Esta fundación tiene por nombreSanándome y está presidida por José Taveraquien al hacer uso de la palabra en laceremonia realizada en Casa Dominicanamanifestó que Sanándome es una entidadsin fines de lucro y cuya meta es trabajar enlas áreas de la prevención, tratamientos einvestigación sobre el HIV y del SIDA.
“La pandemia de esta enfermedad haafectado a más de 40 millones de personasa través del mundo y no es un mal queexcluye a un grupo en particular”, dijoTavera.
Esta organización que tiene su matrizen la República Dominicana, con una sedeen esta Ciudad de Lawrence, señala comosu propósito fundamental luchar contra elHIV y el SIDA, creando conciencia sobreeste mal que afecta a la sociedad en general.
Asegura el presidente de Sanándomeque es importante que la gente entienda queaquellos que actualmente están afectadosdel virus de inmunodeficiencia adquirida, elcual causa el SIDA merecen ser tratados conrespeto y compasión y que es necesarioquitarles etiquetas y los estereotipos.
“El HIV/SIDA es una enfermedadinfecto-contagiosa que no solo acaba conla vida de quienes la sufren, sino queerróneamente representa un descréditosocial, lo que no es justificable”, apuntó.
Agrega Tavera que contrario a lo quese pueda pensar esta enfermedad ataca atodos por igual, sin importar sexo,condición social, racial, religiosa opreferencia sexual.
Tavera dijo que la entidad es unaorganización religiosa que funciona sinninguna afiliación religiosa específica, porlo que en sus filas cabe cualquier personaindependientemente de su fe o religión.

Estas fechas son propicias para que losseres humanos nos llenemos de ilusiones ypermitamos que la esperanzadora luz de laNavidad nos lleve a soñar para que aquellascosas que deseamos se conviertan enrealidad. Esperamos que muchos anhelos aveces materiales, de cosas que siemprehemos deseado, dejen de ser simplesdeseos gracias a la magia de la Navidad.
Por lo regular los niños son los quemás disfrutan de este tiempo, en el que sedejan envolver por los llamativos jugueteso simplemente por la idea de disfrutar porunos días unas vacaciones escolares.
Los adultos en ocasiones tendemos adeprimirnos en estos días, pero en muchosvive la ilusión de volver a ser niñonuevamente y esperar con ansias el día deNavidad, despertar temprano y correr hastadonde están los regalos.
Pero en muchos niños y niñas existemás que el anhelo de una muñeca, un juegode video, una bicicleta o un carro a controlremoto, sus deseos de Navidad encierranuna desgarradora realidad, unaconmovedora historia y una plegaria deamor.
Como un ejemplo de ello quisimoscompartir con ustedes el contenido de unalista de deseos de muchos niños de estaCiudad de Lawrence, que con trazos, enocasiones poco legibles escribieron susanhelos de Navidad en un cartel en laBiblioteca Pública de Lawrence, lista quesin dudas a veces nos hará reír pero otrasveces nos arrancará una lágrima osimplemente una reflexión.

Ese fue el mensaje enviado cuandoel Superintendente Escolar Wilfredo T.Laboy devolvió $50,000 en dádivasestatales a Commonwealth Corporation.Laboy rechazó la oportunidad deutilizar $50,000 en fondos destinados auna iniciativa (CS2 – Communities andSchools for Career Success) para guiara los estudiantes a futuras carreras.
Este programa fue diseñado parajóvenes en riesgo de desertar la escuelao de fracasar en los exámenes de MCASpara así prevenirlo y ayudarlos aconvertirse en adultos trabajadores yproductivos. Este programa hafuncionado muy bien en otras ciudadesde clase obrera en Massachusetts comoSpringfield, Fall River, Boston yBrockton. Lawrence fue invitadaespecíficamente para recibir estosfondos y hacerle frente con estapoblación de la escuela secundaria.
El dinero que Laboy rechazóhubiese ayudado a las academiasdentro de Lawrence High School quetrabajan con consejería laboral, buscarempleos o internados según el interésde los estudiantes que están tambiénconectados con su trabajo escolar ycon otros servicios estudiantiles paramantenerlos en la escuela yu fuera delas calles.
Este programa solicita que loscomerciantes de la comunidad apoyena los estudiantes y la escuelaeconómicamente. El programa CS2también tiene el reglamento legal derecaudar el doble en donacionesprivadas de lo que recibe del estado,por lo tanto tiene un efecto de 200% deganancia sobre la inversión.
Con el liderazgo de la SenadoraSue Tucker (D-Andover) y WilliamLantigua (D-Lawrence), la Legislaturaenmendó el presupuesto de esteprograma lo cual significa un aumentode $20,000 a $50,000. Pero, ahora todoel dinero ha sido devuelto a BeaconHill y otras comunidades podránaprovecharlo.
Parece que Lawrence High Schooltiene todo el dinero que necesita y losestudiantes no necesitan ningunaayuda con sus estudios o encontrandoempleos o internados. ¿Por qué otrarazón el Superintendente Laboy podríarechazar este dinero? ¿No será porpolítica, verdad?

El equipo detrabajo ya comenzó a llegar y ya nosestamos volviendo locos tratando deprepararnos para la mudanza. Paramantenerlos al día: nuestras Sucursal deSouth Lawrence (135 Parker Street, SouthLawrence) estará abierta de lunes aviernes, de 9:00am hasta las 5:00pmdurante las semanas de diciembre 19 ydel 26. En esta ustedes podrán tomarlibros prestados y/o regresarlos. Tambiénpodrán recoger materiales que hayanreservado o mandado a buscar de otrasbibliotecas. Podrán también entregarmateriales en el depósito de libros opelículas de la biblioteca principal, aunqueno estaremos cobrando por materialesatrasados durante esas dos semanas.
Una vez más, les pido disculpas porlas inconveniencias que esto les puedacausar. El proyecto está programado parahaber sido terminado el 20 de enero. Concinco compañías diferentes trabajando eneste proyecto mantenerlo a tiempo es muyimportante aunque algo dificultoso. Lafecha que más me preocupa es la del 3 deenero, el día programado para lareapertura del edificio.
El auditórium ya fue terminado y seve muy bien. El White Fund tuvo unconcierto/charla con la artista local TerriKelley en el auditórium al principio deeste mes el cual fue de gran éxito. Fue degran gusto escuchar a este talento localtocar el piano Steinway con tantahabilidad. Me estaré comunicando conel consejo del White Fund para ver sipodremos tener una serie de conciertosde música anualmente. Si tienen ideassobre esto, favor de informarme.
Como les había informado en elreportaje anterior tuve la oportunidad departicipar en el programa de ser principal
por un día. Yo fui asignada a la escuelaHenry K. Oliver y tuve una experienciabien linda. La directora de la escuela BethGannon estuvo presente para ayudarmey me impresioné mucho con suprofesionalismo y devoción. Unconsejito, si alguna vez a ustedes lestocara participar en uno de estosprogramas, por favor use zapatos bajitos.Después de estar todo el día caminandopor toda la escuela, casi ni me podía parar.
Bueno, ya llegó la época Navideña.Espero que ya estén todos preparadospara las festividades; yo por lo regularespero hasta el último minuto y despuésme estoy volviendo loca. Entre lamudanza aquí y las compras Navideñasestaré bien contenta cuando tenga un díalibre para relajarme. En una nota más seria,durante este tiempo uno está inclinado apensar en las personas menos dichosas.Espero que encuentren un momento paraque oren por estas personas y pornuestras tropas en Irak.
Continuaré con estos reportajesdurante la remodelación para podermantenerlos al tanto del progreso. Comosiempre me despido “Nos vemos en labiblioteca” esta vez les digo “Nos vemosen la Sucursal de South Lawrence.”

As part of holiday activities, childrenof the Merrimack Valley YMCA’s child careprogram created “appreciation boxes” thatthey decorated and will present to someonespecial in their life. Nearly 400 children fromtoddler-age through 8th grade participatedin this holiday project on Thursday,December 16, at the YMCA’s Lawrence andMethuen branches.
Eastpointe Mortgage Company ofMethuen sponsored this day ofappreciation, donating the wooden boxesand other craft supplies. Julia Diaz,Eastpointe Mortgage Company’s VicePresident of Corporate Sales, visited theYMCA child care centers while the childrenwere creating their appreciation boxes.
The day centered on the theme ofappreciation and how everyone, big or small,can show gratitude in very special andsimple ways.
After decorating the boxes, childrenput a small glass bead in the box, along withthis poem:

“This project was a wonderfulopportunity for the children in our child careprogram to take part in a creative activityand to gain a better understanding of themeaning of giving to others at the holidaytime. Todo lo quesiemprenecesitosaber, loaprendí de mimadre
La historia cuenta que hace algún tiempo un hombrecastigó a su hija de 5 años por desperdiciar un rollo depapel dorado para envolver regalos.
Estaban muy mal de dinero y se molestomucho cuando la niña gastó todo el papeldorado en una cajita que puso debajo del árbolde Navidad.
Sin embargo, la mañana de Navidad, laniña le trajo la cajita envuelta con el papeldorado a su padre diciendo: Esto es para ti,papá.
El padre se sintió avergonzado porhaberse molestado tanto la noche anterior,pero su molestia resurgió de nuevo cuandocomprobó que la caja estaba vacía y le dijo entono molesto:
“¿No sabe usted señorita que cuando uno da unregalo debe haber algo dentro del paquete?”
El valor de un besoLa niña se giro con lágrimas en los ojos y le dijo:“Pero papi, no esta vacía. ¡Le puse besitos hasta
que se llenó!”El padre entonces, conmovido, abrazo a la niña y
pidió que le perdonara su horrible manera de proceder.Un tiempo después, un accidente se llevó la vida de
la niña y el padre conservó la cajita dorada junto a sucama por el resto de su vida.
Cuando se sentía solo y desanimado, metía su manoen la caja y sacaba un beso imaginario de ella.
En un sentido muy cierto, todos nosotros loshumanos hemos recibido una cajita dorada llena deamor incondicional y besitos de nuestros hijos, familia,amigos.... No hay regalo más precioso que uno puedarecibir.
Ahora tú tienes dos opciones... puedes, uno: Pasaresto a tus amigos, o dos: ignorarlo y hacer como queeste mensaje no tocó tu corazón.

El pasado fin de semana se realizó ladécimo quinta premiación de los niñosacadémicamente talentosos. La idea derealizar anualmente este evento fue de FifíGarcía, quien entiende que es importantereconocer el empeño y la dedicación que
los estudiantes ponen para alcanzarexcelentes calificaciones en sus estudios.
La ceremonia de premiación fuerealizada en el Lawrence Senior Center y ala misma acudieron importantespersonalidades de esta comunidad, muchosde ellos son personas que no han dejadode apoyar a García en su deseo de reconocera los mejores estudiantes de nuestrasescuelas.
Los cinco finalistas, escogidos comomejores alumnos por sus notas escolaresfueron: Alex Cueto, Iván Pérez, SamanthaGarcía, Frank Estévez y Kimberly García.
Finalmente los dos primeros lugares lecorrespondieron a Alex Cueto, estudiantede la Charter School y a Iván Pérez, alumnode la South Lawrence East, quienesrecibieron como reconocimientos a susexcelentes calificaciones una computadorade regalo.
Previo a la premiación las hermanitasKayla y Jackie Gaudet tocaron varios temashaciendo acompañar del violín y el piano,respectivamente.

Entre las personas reconocidas por suapoyo incondicional a la premiación al pasarde los años fueron Ralph Carrero, quien haconseguido por varios años consecutivosque las estrellas escolares entregadas a losestudiantes sean confeccionadas en laEscuela Técnica. Además, el Concejal At-Large Marcos Devers por su disposiciónde ayudar en la realización de la ceremonia;el fotógrafo Darío Arias y Lucy Mane, quiena pesar de haber emigrado de Lawrence supresencia está presente no solo en estapremiación sino en otros eventos de lacomunidad.
Al hacer uso de la palabra Carrerosignificó que ha sido testigo de la misión yresponsabilidad demostrada por Fifi encuanto a la educación y que esto se puedepalpar en la formación que hoy tienen loshijos de ella.
“Recuerden que el secreto deconquistar a los padres, es obtener buenascalificaciones y actuando conresponsabilidad”, dijo Carrero.
Fifi Garcia y el Restaurante Daysi G’sofrecerá una cena el día de “Los Tres ReyesMagos” a los cinco finalistas y a sus padres.

December 15, 2005 – State Rep. WilliamLantigua (D-Lawrence) today applauded theannouncement of a plan to lower autoinsurance rates in Lawrence by 10.7 percent,a decrease that will save the average citydriver more than $100 next year.
“This is a tremendous victory for thepeople of Lawrence and for those who havefought to bring auto insurance rates down,”Lantigua said. “It goes to show that hardwork and a strong voice can make goodthings happen.”
Describing the announcement as anearly holiday gift to drivers, Governor MittRomney and Insurance CommissionerJulianne Bowler said at an afternoon pressconference that insurance rates will drop8.7 percent in Massachusetts as of January1. The Interact Club is also generouslysponsored a CCHS student dance, the“Frost Frest,” to help raise funds for theproject on Friday, December 17th. This year’seffort, which will provide items for 45families, is being led by student directorsAllison R. Trull and Ashley E. Trull (bothseniors) under the guidance of religiousstudies teacher Joseph Lynch. Over the pastfour years, students have helped providegifts for over 162 families.
Students collect mission money andparticipate in fundraising initiatives on aregular basis to help support other local,national, and international charities. Anti-fraud programs inother Massachusetts communities modeledon this effort have been widely credited fora 10-percent drop in claims filed statewidelast year. The decrease saved theCommonwealth $253 million, approximately$100 million of which was attributed to thefive communities with task forces to curbfraudulent claims: Lawrence, Boston,Springfield, Holyoke, and Brockton.
“Chief Romero and the task force hecreated deserve a great deal of recognitionfor identifying and targeting this problem,”Lantigua said. “Because of their hard work,our drivers are safer, and will soon be saving
money, too.”The rate cut, which brings the average
annual auto insurance premium down to$995 and will save drivers a collective $380million in 2006, marks the largest reductionin more than 25 years. Average rates in 2004and 2005 were $1,047 and $1,063,respectively.
Lantigua praised the work of AttorneyGeneral Thomas Reilly, who recommendedan 18-percent reduction several monthsago. He also cited the efforts of fellowLawrence-area legislators Sen. SusanTucker (D-Andover), Rep. Barry Finegold(D-Andover), and Rep. David Torrisi (D-North Andover), who joined him in urginglower rates at an August meeting of theInsurance Commission.
Lantigua said he supports furtherreforms to the auto insurance industry inMassachusetts, the only state in thecountry to unilaterally set its insurance
rates.“This is wonderful news, but I hope
and believe that it’s only a start,” he said,noting Romney’s call for a more competitiveauto insurance system. “We’ve come toofar to stop fighting now.”
Lawrence, MA—December 21, 2005—The Boys & Girls Club of Lawrenceannounced today that it received a$20,000 grant from The ComcastFoundation to support expandedactivities at the Club’s Learning Center.The Learning Center utilizes communityvolunteers to provide after schoolhomework help, computer support,reading enrichment and tutoringservices to Club members throughoutthe academic year. Funding fromComcast will be used to recruit and trainadditional volunteers and to purchasebooks, equipment and educationalsoftware.

The Learning Centeris open from 3:00 to 6:00 PM Mondaythrough Thursday, and children arestrongly encouraged to attend beforethey begin any of the Club’s recreationalactivities.

That was the message sent whenLawrence Superintendent Wilfredo T.Laboy returned $50,000 in state grant fundsto the state’s Commonwealth Corporation.Laboy rejected a chance to use $50,000 in aschool-to-career funding initiative calledCS2 [Communities and Schools for CareerSuccess]. This program targets youth atrisk of dropping out of high school or failingMCAS to prevent that and help thembecome productive working adults. Thisprogram has worked well in other working-class Massachusetts cities, includingSpringfield, Fall River, Boston and Brockton.Lawrence was specifically invited to get thisfunding to address this population at itshigh school.
The money Laboy is rejecting wouldhave helped the career academies atLawrence High do career developmentcounseling, arrange jobs or internships ofinterest to the youth that are also connectedwith their schoolwork, and connect withother student services to keep these youngpeople in school and off the streets.
This program actually solicits the localbusiness community to support thestudents and schools financially. The CS2program is even required by law to raisetwice as much in private money than theamount of the grant – so there is in effect a
200% return on the investment!With the successful leadership of State
Senator Sue Tucker [D-Andover] andWilliam Lantigua [D-Lawrence], the statelegislature amended the budget for theprogram, which meant an increase inLawrence’s share of funds from $20,000 to$50,000. But now all of this money has beenreturned to Beacon Hill and othercommunities will get to take advantage ofit!
Apparently, Lawrence High School hasall the money it needs, and no students needany help with their studies or gettinginternships or jobs! Why else wouldSuperintendent Laboy refuse this money?It wouldn’t be politics now, would it?
The money Laboy isrejecting would havehelped the careeracademies at LawrenceHigh do careerdevelopment counseling,arrange jobs or internshipsof interest to the youth thatare also connected withtheir schoolwork, andconnect with other studentservices to keep theseyoung people in school andoff the streets.
Apparently, LawrenceHigh School has all themoney it needs, and nostudents need any helpwith their studies orgetting internships orjobs!

Christmas is almost here and Lawrence/Methuen Community Coalition is embarkedon helping more than 100 needy families withessentials for a hot traditional meal. Eachbasket contains either, rice or potatoes,canned beans, cranberry, pasta and a varietyof non perishables according to culturalpreference. Instead of meat or poultry, theyreceived a $10.00 gift certificate good atMarket Basket.
On Tuesday, December 20th, the foodbaskets were distributed through AlmaBrownfield Neighborhood, GLCAC’s HeadStart, Department of Social Services, SouthCentral Common Neighborhood, OneFoundation Outreach, Lawrence/MethuenCommunity Coalition and Methuen/Arlington Neighborhood Association.
The LMCC partners with several areaagencies to coordinate holiday food basketsfor families during November and Decembereach year. Families in need are chosenthrough agency or neighborhood referralsand baskets are distributed by eachneighborhood association or agency. More than 140 members of thebusiness community were on hand to hearabout the YMCA’s accomplishments duringthe course of 2005, including major facilityexpansion at the Lawrence Branch, theaddition of the Family Aquatic Center.

Hi Rumbo readers. By the time youread this we will be in the middle of ourrenovation project. The equipment iscoming in every day and we are all goingmildly crazy trying to prepare for the move.A few more updates for you as far as theclosing of the building is concerned: As Isaid before, our branch library (135 ParkerSt., South Lawrence) will be open 9-5Monday through Friday for the two-weekperiod. You can return books there andget library cards. You will also be able topick up any materials you might haveordered from other libraries. We will havethe book drop available here as well, butwe will not be charging fines for materialbrought in late during that period.
Again, I apologize for anyinconvenience to our customers but weare really trying to keep things as normalas possible for the duration. Scheduledfinish date for the whole project is January20th. With five different companies nowinvolved, meeting schedule might be aproblem. My major concern is that wemake the January 3rd re-open date.
Our auditorium is finished and it looksgreat. The White Fund hosted a music/lecture performance there at thebeginning of the month featuring hugelytalented local artist, Terri Kelley. We hadgreat success with this event and it was areal joy to hear the White Fund’s beautifulSteinway piano used by someone of suchability. I will be talking with some of theboard of the White Fund about thepossibility of starting an annual series ofmusical events at the library. Let me knowwhat you think.
I told you last issue that I was goingto have an opportunity to participate inthe principal for a day program. I wasassigned to the Henry K. Oliver Schooland it was a really good experience.Principal Beth Gannon was there to helpme and I was really impressed with herhard work and devotion. It is easy to seethe trust her students show in her. Forfuture reference, however, if any of you
out there get an opportunity toparticipate in this event do not wear highheel shoes. After a day of running fromfloor to floor I could hardly stand!
Well, the holiday season is here. Ihope you all are prepared for it. Speakingfor myself, I generally leave everythingto pretty much the last minute and theweek before Christmas is total chaos.Between the move here and trying to dealwith last minute shopping I’ll sure berelieved when the day itself comes and Ican relax. On a more serious note, duringthe holidays one is inclined to think aboutpeople whose situation is more precariousthan one’s own. I hope everyone finds amoment during the season to pray for thepeople worldwide who are forced to livein poverty and strife, and also to pray forour troops in Iraq and wish a fast andsafe return.
I will continue these articles duringthe course of the renovation so I can keepyou all up-to-date on progress here aswell as any potential delays in returningto full service. I always say “See you atthe library”, but I guess for this time I’llhave to change that to “See you at thebranch library.

Radio Disney’s Party Patrol stopped bythe Lawrence Branch of the MerrimackValley YMCA’s annual Holiday Party onSaturday, December 17. Over 100 childrenenjoyed the Disney dance contest, jumpingcontest, “Name that Disney Song,” “Namethat Disney Movie,” and other themedgames.

Christmas came early for the 47 children who attend the child care center atNorthern Essex Community College’s Lawrence Campus when representativesfrom Starbucks delivered winter coats, hats, mittens, and toys on Thursday,December 16. Employees at 20 Starbucks stores from the North Shore,Merrimack Valley and Southern New Hampshire and Maine collected over $3500worth of presents for the children who range in age from 3 to 6. “It was verytouching,” said Julie Hazard, who is manager of Starbucks North Andover storeand organized the effort. “It feels good to see how excited the kids get.” Thiswas the third year that the children in the child care benefited from thegenerosity of Starbucks employees and their patrons.
