El Comité de Preocupaciones Humanas ha designado una vez
más a Smile Train como la organización benéfica de divulgación
para el mes de junio de este año. Esta organización ofrece una
cirugía digna de paladar hendido a miles de niños pobres en
todo el mundo. Ellos han construido una red mundial de socios
de Smile Train que donan su tiempo y talento para reparar las

El Centro de Ayuda, como lo conocemos hoy, fue fundado en un Monasterio Franciscano, ubicado en Marytown, en 1971. Comenzamos como un pequeño comité llamado CASA (Caring and Sharing Always) y luego hicimos la transición al Centro Latino Americano. Desde 1971 hemos pasado por cambios de ubi-cación y hemos cambiado nuestro nombre una vez más. Este año, celebramos nuestro 50 aniversario, el 28 y 29 de Agosto, y compartiremos datos de nuestro pasado al igual que nueva in-formación sobre lo que está por venir para el Centro y para la comunidad.
The Outreach Center as we know it today was found-ed in a Franciscan Monastery, located at Marytown, in 1971. We started as a small committee called CASA (Caring and Sharing Always) and then transi-tioned to the Latin American Center. Since 1971 we
have gone through location changes and have changed our name yet again. This year as we celebrate our 50th anniversary, on August 28th and 29th, we will be giving you insights from our past and give you new information on what is to come for the Center and for our community!
Volunteer Spotlight: On the right we have Martha Sanchez a wonderful individual who provided
assistance to the community through the Outreach Center from 2004-2014. Martha helped
many with translations, referrals, and even visited the sick. Martha was part of many outreach
events and supported the Alcoholics Anonymous group, we have been very blessed to have her
be a part of this organization and we wanted to say thank you!
Agradecimiento a nuestros Voluntarios: A la derecha tenemos a Martha Sánchez, una persona
maravillosa que brindó asistencia a la comunidad a través del Centro del 2004-2014. Martha
ayudo a muchos con traducciones, referencias e incluso visitó a los enfermos. Martha fue

Have you ever been in a boat on Lake Michigan when a storm blew
up suddenly? Now imagine the pilot of the boat (or the leader of the
excursion) asleep while the boat is being tossed. Imagine the
fear. Not too hard to put yourself in the part of the disciples in to-
day’s gospel passage from Mark. The Sea of Galilee is a body of wa-
ter not unlike Lake Michigan (though not as large) in its ability to
whip up huge waves in a wind-driven storm. The disciples are quite
fearful for their lives and turn to their leader for rescue - - - and He’s
sleeping! Before calming the storm, Jesus scolds them for their fear
and lack of faith. “Why are you afraid?”
When Jesus calmed the storm, the disciples were stunned by the mir-
acle (although that was precisely the rescue they were hoping
for). Even though they knew personally who Jesus was, they were
quite impressed by his power in controlling the elements. The mira-
cle in the passage is to help reveal both the humanity and deity of
Jesus, I think: humanity when He was sleeping in the boat, deity
when He spoke and the seas were calmed. In the days of Jesus, the
sea was frequently perceived as the dwelling place of evil. Manifest-
ing control over the sea was a sign of Divine power.
Don’t we all experience moments in life when we are wondering if
the Lord Jesus is sleeping, if He hears our prayers, if He actually cares
about our welfare? Isn’t the fear the disciples had the same fear that
we all have when we are confronted with a crisis. We find out that
we have a serious illness, and we become fearful for our lives. We
learn a terrible truth about one of our relatives or friends, and we
fear that their lives and even our own reputations will be shat-
tered. Even challenges as routine as moving from Middle School to
High School, or High School to college can be frightening.
We fear that we are alone. But we are not alone. God sees. God
knows. He’s there in the boat of life with us as the storms rage. He
challenges us as Jesus challenged his disciples, “Why are you afraid?
Where is your faith?” Our all-loving God is also an all-powerful
God. He will calm the sea for us if we trust in him. God does not for-
get us, even when we think He is sleeping.
Perhaps today’s readings are not about a storm after all. They are
really about a God who created the universe and cares for each one
of us as an only child. He calls upon us to have faith that the con-
queror of the seas and of all chaos will help us grow closer to him
through all the challenges of our lives.

SEGUNDA LECTURA Lectura de la segunda carta de san Pablo a los Corintios 5, 14-17
Hermanos: El amor de Cristo nos apremia, al pensar que si uno murió por todos, todos murieron. Cristo
murió por todos para que los que viven ya no vivan
para sí mismos, sino para aquel que murió y resucitó
por ellos.
Por eso nosotros ya no juzgamos a nadie con criterios
humanos. Si alguna vez hemos juzgado a Cristo con
tales criterios, ahora ya no lo hacemos. El que vive según Cristo es una creatura nueva; para él todo lo
viejo ha pasado. Ya todo es nuevo.

según san Marcos
Un día, al atardecer, Jesús dijo a sus discípulos:
“Vamos a la otra orilla del lago”. Entonces los discípu-
los despidieron a la gente y condujeron a Jesús en la
misma barca en que estaba. Iban además otras bar-
cas.
De pronto se desató un fuerte viento y las olas se es-
trellaban contra la barca y la iban llenando de agua.
Jesús dormía en la popa, reclinado sobre un cojín. Lo
despertaron y le dijeron: “Maestro, ¿no te importa
que nos hundamos?” Él se despertó, reprendió al
viento y dijo al mar: “¡Cállate, enmudece!” Entonces el
viento cesó y sobrevino una gran calma. Jesús les di-jo: “¿Por qué tenían tanto miedo? ¿Aún no tienen fe?”
Todos se quedaron espantados y se decían unos a
otros: “¿Quién es éste, a quien hasta el viento y el mar
obedecen?”.
