Noly Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice Cross The Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice (“For Church and Pope”) was established by Leo XIII on July 17, 1888, to commemorate his golden sacerdotal jubi-lee and was originally bestowed on those men and women who had aided and promoted the jubilee, and by other means assisted in making the jubilee and the Vatican Exposition successful. Today it is given for distinguished service to the church by lay people and clergy. It is the highest medal that can be awarded to the laity by the Pope.

Adorno Father Nicholas Capetola (back row, far right) also received the award. Fr. Nick is the former pastor of Immaculate Conception Church in Goose Creek.

LIBERATION AND REFORM While you might have to reach for an atlas to deter-mine that Isaiah is speaking about Galilee, today’s first reading (part of which was read at Christmas) is prophetic of Jesus’ future ministry in that province. The light that brings salvation and rejoicing is, ultimately, Christ. Lib-eration is the theme: liberation from both ignorance (“darkness”) and sin (the “yoke”). As Isaiah identifies a place, so Paul describes an atti-tude: the attitude that develops, even among good people, of equating their own will with the common good. This always brings dissension, and so it has done in Corinth. Paul will not allow this; we are all members of “Christ’s party.” The gospel is not to divide us. Matthew quotes from Isaiah in today’s Gospel, pre-senting Jesus as the fulfillment of Isaiah’s prophecies. The theme is “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand” (Matthew 4:17). To spread this message, Jesus be-gins to select disciples, four of whom we meet today: Pe-ter, Andrew, James, and John. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

THAT MAN IS YOU is starting up again, Wednesday, January 25th. All men of the parish are invited to the sessions every Wednesday morning from 6:00 to 7:30 am for breakfast, prayers and discussion about the spirituality of the Catholic man. “Identify the indispensable role of the family in salvation history from Calvary until today. Iden-tify the seeds that God has planted for the renewal of the Church, the family and greater society. Identify The Seven Steps to a Healthy, Happy, Holy Family. Provide the opportunity for men and their fami-lies to go on pilgrimage.” Week 16: Grace Flowing from the Temple • The Mystical Reality of the Church • The Church and the Domestic Church • St. Peter and St. Paul’s Influence on the Early Church • The Blossoming of Christian Europe • Israel’s Beliefs about Grace • The Reality of Ecclesia Domestica

St. Vincent de Paul Society Needs Your Help! The Panera Bread volunteers are looking for

a few more people on Wednesday nights to pick up and pack-age the bread donations. It would take about 1 hour of your time. Two people go to Panera at 9:45 pm, pick up the bread and take it back to the church. There other volunteers are waiting to repack the bread for the Food Pantry on Thursday morning. I know it is at night, but it is only about 1 hour. We are a good group. Please give us a try! For more info, contact Leona Barcomb, 864-310-4660.
