UNIT II SIMPLE PAST

2.1 WHAT DID YOU DO ? GRAMMAR I Definition You can use the simple past to talk about things that happened in the past And do not continue in the present. We have two kinds of verbs in past Regular and Irregular verbs 1) To the regular verbs you have to add the ending ED to change from present to past,but you have to follow certain rules

A) to the verbs that finish with the letter E ,you only add the ending D

EXAMPLE 1 PRESENT I DECIDE TO WORK IN THAT PLACE yo decido trabajar en ese lugar PAST I DECIDED TO WORK IN THAT PLACE yo decidi trabajar en ese lugar EXAMPLE 2 PRESENT THEY PRACTICE ENGLISH IN CLASS ellos practican ingles en clase PAST THEY PRACTICED ENGLISH IN CLASS ellos practicaron ingles en clase B ) To the verbs that finish for the letter Y ,and are preceded by a consonant ,you can change the letter Y ,for I and add the ending ED EXAMPLE 1 PRESENT I STUDY AT HOME yo estudio en casa PAST I STUDIED AT HOME yo estudie en casa EXAMPLE 1 PRESENT THE BABIES CRY ALL THE TIME los bebes lloran todo el tiempo PAST THE BABIES CRIED ALL THE TIME los bebes lloraron todo el tiempo C) to the verbs that finish with the letter Y ,and are preceded by a vowel, you only have to add the ending ED EXAMPLE 1 PRESENT THE CHILDREN PLAY FOOT BALL los niños juegan fut bol PAST THE CHILDREN PLAYED FOOT BALL los niños jugaron fut bol EXAMPLE 2 PRESENT ALEX AND JOSE STAY AT HOME Alex y Jose permanecen en casa PAST ALEX AND JOSE STAYED AT HOME Alex y Jose permanecieron en casa NOTE The ending ED, can be pronounced as a / T / ,/ D / , or a / ED / ,taking in count only three rules¨

2) for iregular verbs there is not an specific rule to change from present to past form.you have to memorize them.but you can find them at the end of this book

The Seven Ancient Wonders of the World

The seven ancient wonders of the world were most impressive monuments of their time. Here are three of them.

THE HANGIG GARDENS OF BABYLON. King Nebuchadnezzar II built the garden for the his wife. In people`s minds, the Hanging Gardens were the most magnificent gardens ever made. People imagined the gardens with all kinds of exotic animal as well as fruit – bearing trees and flowers hanging from the palace terraces. However, this garden may not have existed except in the minds of poets and historians. THE STATUS OF ZEUS AT OLYMPIA. This statue of ivory and gold was the most magnificent one ever made. It was built for the Greek god Zeus. The base of the statue was about 20 feet wide and 3 feet high. The statue alone was as tall as a four – story building. THE COLOSSUS OF RHODES IN GREECE. The English word colossal, meaning “enormous” comes from this ancient wonder. The Colossus was huge! It took 900
