GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUTVALENCIA

2.1. THE CITY OF VALENCIA

Valencia is one of the most important industrial areas in the Mediterranean. Ithas also become a renowned conference centre in Europe and a significantmeeting point for those who wish to develop their businesses or participate inTrade Fairs. Valencia is a cosmopolitan city which is ideal for both commercialtrade and cultural exchange.

Extremely influenced by its maritime links since its foundation, Valencia today isassociated more than ever with the sea and defined by its relationship with it.As a result of this close relationship with the sea, its ability to organiseprominent events and the local government’s determination, Valencia wasawarded the honour of hosting the 32nd America’s Cup, having been selectedahead of 65 other cities from all over the world. This international event washeld in the spring of 2007, and turned the city into a focal point for theMediterranean where each visitor became a privileged spectator. This attractivecity on the Mediterranean shoreline offers visitors mild weather, a rich cuisine,festivals, long standing traditions which are still kept alive today along with awide range of cultural and leisure activities.

Valencia’s History

“Valentia Edetanorum” - the city of Valencia - was founded in 138 BC by theRoman Consul Decimus Junius Brutus Galaicus. In the year 75 BC the city wasdestroyed during the war between Pompeus and Sertorius but it re-emerged inthe first century thanks to the immigration of new citizens and the constructionof public buildings.

The Barbarian invasions led to the overthrow of the Romans and all tradingactivity virtually ceased. The city was later dominated by the Visigoths and in theyear 711 it was conquered by the Muslims. Abd al-Allah, son of the first emir ofCórdoba, settled in Valencia (Balansiya in the Arabic language) and created anautonomous government contributing with their own language, religion andcustoms.

The Middle Ages witnessed the El Cid Campeador laying siege and conqueringthe city in July 1093 after the death of Balansiya’s King. El Cid died in Valencia

on the 10th July 1093 but his wife Doña Jimena along with Ramón Berenger IIIof Barcelona managed to defend the city until the year 1101 when people wereforced to evacuate due to the pressure of the Almoravides.

In 1238, Jaime I re-conquered the city, incorporating the Aragonese Crown andfounding the Kingdom of Valencia. The new state was given a legislative forum(the Fueros). During the 15th century the city’s population grew from 40,000 to75,000, and with it, the construction of significant buildings such as the“Micalet”, the “Torres de los Serranos”, “La Lonja de la Seda” and the“Mercaderes” where the “Taula de Canvis” was located strengthening trade inthe city.

The fall of the Germanic rule damaged the city’s position, but the decisive blowto the economy came with the expulsion of the Moors in 1609. After theBourbon victory in the battle of Almansa (the 25th April 1707), Felipe V abolishedthe Fueros, a punishment for having sided with Archduke Carlos of Austria inthe War of Succession.

During the 19th century, the Industrial Revolution and the “Proyecto General delEnsanche” carried out by the architects Sebastián Monleón, Antonio Sancho andTimoteo Calvo brought about a population increase but the sharpest rise in thenumber of inhabitants took place in the 20th century when the figure increasedfrom 213,550 in 1900 to more than 800,000 at present. For a short period oftime, during the Civil War (November 1936 - October 1937), Valencia was thecapital of republican Spain and home of the Government. In 1957 the citysuffered great losses due to flooding which consequently led to the course ofthe river being diverted.

The economy of Valencia gradually began to recover from this setback andstarted to prosper to where it is now. Today it has one of the most flourishingeconomies in Spain. The latest growth in the city has come about with theconstruction of symbolic buildings, like those in the “City of Arts and Sciences”,or with the hosting of major events like the America’s Cup 2007.

Leading monuments

The city’s leading monuments are a clear reflection of its rich history and of thedifferent cultures that have lived together in the city. In this sense, “La Lonja dela Seda” (Valencia Silk Exchange) is one of the most significant buildings. Builtin the 15th century (1482-1498), this is the city’s most outstanding example ofGothic architecture and was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1996. Inthe same area visitors to the city can find the Central Market as well as the“Iglesia de los Santos Juanes” (Saint Johns’ Church).

The historical centre also contains the “Palau de la Generalitat”, “ Basílica de laVirgen de los Desamparados” and the Valencia Cathedral with “El Miguelete”,a bell tower adjoining the cathedral which is one of the most symbolicmonuments in the city. Also worth seeing is the “Plaza Redonda” which is hometo a market. The old town was surrounded by a wall up to the end of the 19thcentury and two towers (Quart and Serranos Towers) are still standing.

Another site of interest is the “L’Eixample” area which contains beautiful “artnouveau” style buildings such as the Colon Market and the North Station, whichis a hub in the Spanish rail system. Besides the previously mentioned historicalheritage, Valencia has also adapted quickly to modern times.

Few cities have been able to so harmoniously combine the remains from earlierperiods (dating as far back as 138 B.C.) with the most modern and avant-gardebuildings. Projects like “City of Arts and Sciences”, a scientific and culturalcentre, designed by the prestigious Valencian architect Santiago Calatrava,reflects the modernity and growth of Valencia. Located close to the originalTuria riverbed, it covers an overall area of 350,000 square metres and hasbecome a reference point in the city.

On the outskirts of the city natural areas of great interest can be found, such asthe Albufera Natural Park, located 15 kilometres to the South of the city andwhich contains the biggest lake on the Iberian Peninsula. This was caused by aformer sea gulf being closed off by a sandbank and the lake being fed by springwater streams, irrigation ditches and other kind of channels called ‘ullals’.

Leisure and gastronomy

Valencia has a wide range of leisure and cultural activities on offer. The mildtemperatures encourage the visitor to be outdoors, sampling the delights of thecity. The most important festival is “Las Fallas”. During the week leading up to19th March, various neighbourhood groups take out their “ninot” figures for agrand parade, and then assemble these elaborate firecracker-filled cardboardand papier-mâché into artistic displays in a street of their neighbourhood. Thefinal product is called a “falla” which is then burned on the night of 19th March.The “ninots” and their “fallas” are designed according to an agreed theme, andinvolve a satirical jab at anything or anyone unlucky enough to draw theattention of the critical eyes of the “fallas” creators.

The city is also internationally famous for its “Mostra de Valencia Film Festival” which celebrated its 27th year last October and has become a mustin the Mediterranean film world. Also worth a mention is the “City of ValenciaInternational Band Competition“, an event which was first held towards the end

of the 19th century (1886), and which has now soberly entered into the 21st

century. Over 2000 musicians gather at the “Palau de la Música de Valencia”concert hall and at the “Plaza de Toros de Valencia” (bullring).

Valencia is also well-known for its nightlife, especially for young people who canenjoy a wide variety of bars and discos listening to the latest sounds or dancingthe night away. There are also lots of theatres, cinemas and quiet cafes.

The city is also the venue for important sports events. In addition to the WorldIndoor Championships in Athletics to be held in 2008, Valencia hosted in Spring2007 the 32nd America’s Cup, the oldest sports event worldwide spanning 152years. The competition traditionally attracts the crème of the sailing world.

With regard to Valencian gastronomy, the visitor will find a wide range of dishesand desserts; the star of the show is the world famous “Paella”, made of ricecooked in a myriad of ways, in addition to other products such as chicken andpulse though there are other traditional dishes such as arroz al horno (oven-baked rice), arroz a banda (rice with shellfish), arroz negro (rice with black squidink) and la fideuá (made with noodles instead of rice). We should also mentionthe horchata (a milky drink made from tiger nuts).

2.1. VALENCIA IN FIGURES

Area The total area of Valencia Region is 23,260 sq.km

Population About 4,470,885 in the Region, 1.730.853 of them in Valencia city and its metropolitan area.

Business Hours The shops in Valencia open between 9:00 and 10:00; they closefor lunch at 13:30 or 14:00, and open in the afternoon at 16:00or 17:00 until 20:00 or 21:30. Large shopping centres anddepartment stores, however, do not generally close atlunchtime. Some shops and all the shopping centres anddepartment stores remain open on Saturday afternoon, whilstall shops are closed on Sundays, except for certain specialperiods throughout the year when the shops have permissionto open. Most of the banks open at 8:00 or 8:30 and close at14:00 or 14:30. However, there is an extensive network of cashdispensers where you can withdraw cash when needed.

Transport There is a well-developed transport system of buses andmetro. In addition, there are many taxis in the city.

PALAU VELÓDROMO LLUÍS PUIGSPORTS ARENA

The competition venue will be the “Palau Velódromo Luis Puig”, one of the bestindoor athletics facilities in the world. Located in the northeast of the city, in the“Benimámet” area and close to the “Feria de Muestras”, it was first inauguratedin the summer of 1992 on the occasion of the World Cycling TrackChampionships. At the end of that competition, the roof was installed and TheirMajesties King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia were present at the official openingceremony on 9th November 1992. It was in 1994 that the third and final phaseof improvements to the building took place and a 200m oval track was installedto host the Spanish Championships in February 1995. Three years later, the arenawitnessed an unforgettable hosting of the European Indoor Championships.

The arena has hosted a large number of remarkable sports and cultural eventsthroughout its 15 years history. We should highlight among them the abovementioned World Cycling Championships and European AthleticsChampionships in 1992 and 1998 respectively, the European SwimmingChampionships - a swimming pool was built for the occasion but it wasdemolished immediately after the event – the European Cycling TrackChampionships in 2004, several Spanish Indoor Athletics Championships as wellas international permit meetings and the Spanish Cup in team competition, theSpanish Masters Tennis tournament, Gymnastics National Championships, aBilliards International tournament, World Dancing Championships, the 3rd and4th International Aerobic Congresses, concerts by soloists and internationalbands. In addition, the “Palau” is the headquarters of the autonomous regionof Valencia Cycling Federation and the High Performance Cycling Track centre.

With a view to the World Indoor Championships in Athletics to be staged in2008 the “Palau Velódromo Luis Puig” has undergone improvements andextensive works for such an important event. On 2nd November 2006 the firstphase was completed, consisting of the installation of a new roof allowingnatural light and improve heating. Recently, the renovation has included therefurbishment of the competition arena including a re-wiring and the buildingof new stands for authorities, media and public which has increased the overallcapacity to 6000 seats.

The scheduled investment has cost €3.4 millions and has also included thelinking of the sports arena and the nearby Valencia Trade Fair so that its pavilionnumber 5 and the cycle track form a single unit. The new building will comprise

the track, the athletes’ warm-up area as well as the Media Centre, the ticketoffice and other facilities. At the same time the synthetic track was totally re-laid, and was inaugurated the 3rd December last.

ARRIVAL IN VALENCIA

4.1. ARRIVAL BY PLANE

The official airport for the competition is Valencia (Manises Airport). TheOrganising Committee will provide free transportation from this airport to theofficial Media Hotels. Upon arrival in Valencia, each media representativeshould proceed to the Arrivals area where he/she will be met by staff of theLocal Organising Committee. These staff will be easily identified and will be ableto answer any questions you may have concerning the Championships.

4.2. VISA REQUIREMENTS

To apply for a VISA for entry to Spain your passport must be valid for 6 (six)months after your planned date of departure from Spain.

The relevant authorities recognise the importance of the Championships andwill co-operate with the LOC to facilitate the teams’ smooth entry into Spain.

If you need an official invitation from the LOC in order to get visas, please sendin sufficient time to the LOC a list of the members of the delegation with thefollowing information: date of birth and gender of the person, passport numberand the date of expiry and the city with the Spanish Embassy or Consulatewhere the visa will be received.

6.1. ORGANISING COMMITTEE INFORMATION DESK

The LOC Information Desk will be located in the lobby of each hotel to adviseon transportation. The bus timetable to the Palau Velodromo Luis Puig and tothe press conferences and official activities will also be available.

6.2. BUS SERVICE

A regular bus service will be provided between Media Hotels (Confortel****,Confortel***, Ibis Palacio de Congresos and Valencia Park) and Palau VelódromoLuis Puig. The bus timetable will be available at the LOC Information Desk in allthe Media Hotels.

The organisers will also provide transportation to the official press conferenceto be held on the morning of the 6th March and to all other receptions andofficial activities laid on for Media representatives. The timetables of theseservices will be placed at the Information Desk of the hotels.

6.3. PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION SERVICE

Along with the accreditation, all the media representatives will receive atransportation pass allowing them free travel on the public transport system ofValencia during the week of competition. This pass must always be visible andmust be shown to the Valencia Transport Company staff when requested. MEDIA ACREDITATION

7.1. ACCREDITATION PROCEDURES

Each media representative will receive an accreditation card that must always bevisible. Security personnel will control access to the different competition areas.Accreditation is not transferable and does not allow the holder to take anotherperson beyond checkpoints. Accreditation cards will be prepared in advance ofthe event, based on the information provided by the members of the media inthe accreditation application forms distributed through the National AthleticsFederations before the deadline of 15th February. Along with the accreditationcard media representatives will receive a transportation pass allowing freepublic transport in Valencia during the week of competition.

Any lost or damaged accreditation cards should be reported immediately to theLOC Information desk. Duplicate cards can be obtained where proof of identitycan be established.

7.2. MEDIA ACCREDITATION CENTRE

Media representatives can pick up their accreditation card in the MainAccreditation Centre, located in the “Centro de Eventos Feria de Valencia”, closeto the Palau Velódromo Luis Puig. This Centre will open from the 1st to 9th ofMarch from 08:00 to 20:00 hours daily.

8.1. MAIN MEDIA CENTRE

The Main Media Centre will be located in the “Centro de Eventos Feria deValencia” Hall, only 200 metres from Palau Velódromo Luis Puig, venue of thecompetition and will be connected with the Palau by an exclusive passage forMedia representatives. Its opening timetable will be as follows:

8.2. SUB MEDIA CENTRE

There will be a Sub Media Centre (60 square metres) in the FORUM Room ofConfortel Aqua**** Hotel, the main Media Hotel. It will have two free Internetaccess computers and one printer and also pigeon holes for media information.It will be open as follows:

8.3. MEDIA STAND

Work desks for Media Representatives in Palau Luis Puig will be provided in theMain Stand beside the Finish Line. The Media Stand will have 150 three seaterdesks (total capacity for 450 people), TV monitors and CIS. Each Media seat willhave electricity sockets and net cable connection sockets. In addition, in theMedia Stand there will be a free Wireless internet connection. The Media Standwill have a further 50 seats without desks.In the entrance to the Media Stand there will be a map locating all the workstations in the Stand.

8.4. MIXED ZONE

It will be located on the same level of the Media Stand and at the athletes exitfrom the track after competing in their respective events. The location order ofMedia representatives in the Mixed Zone is the following:

1. Unilateral TV positions.2. Places for ENG TV cameras and radio.3. Written Press area (40 metres long).

8.5. PRESS CONFERENCE ROOM

The Conference Room is located just behind the Media Stand is located theConference Room with a capacity for 75 people and easy access from the MixedZone. After each event Press Conferences in English and in Spanish will be heldwith all Championships medallists. The timetables of these conferences will bedisplayed on a notice board at the entrance to the Press Conference Room.

8.6. PHOTOGRAPHERS WORKING ROOM AND PHOTOGRAPHERSPLATFORMS

The Photographers Working Room will be located in the “Centro de Eventos dela Feria de Valencia”, adjacent to the Main Media Centre with a capacity for 75people. From there, there will be easy access to the lockers and pigeon holes.The Photographers Working Room will be located just beside the Media CentreRestaurant. It will have TV monitors to follow the competition and CIS. Thephoto editors of the main agencies will be provided with a reserved workingarea below the track of the Palau Velódromo Luis Puig.

Only a limited number of photographers will have access to the track and willbe identified by a red bib number. The remaining photographers will workoutside the track and will wear a green bib. All photographers will be able touse several platforms in the arena around the track to take pictures of all races,jumps and throws events. There will be a reserved area in front of the podiumto take pictures of the medal presentations. Blocks of seats in the spectators’stands will also be reserved as working positions for photographers.

It will be held on Thursday 6th March at 16:00 hours in the Photographers WorkRoom in the Main Media Centre (Centro de Eventos Feria de Valencia) and willbe chaired by Rafael Seguí, Photographers’ Co-ordinator of the Championships.After the briefing, bib will be issued to photographers.

INFORMACIÓN GENERAL SOBREVALENCIA

2.1. LA CIUDAD DE VALENCIA

Valencia es uno de los centros industriales más importantes del Mediterráneo.Asímismo, se ha convertido en un destacado centro de congresos europeo ypunto de encuentro de primer orden para quienes desean desarrollar susnegocios o participar en sus certámenes feriales. Valencia es una ciudadcosmopolita, idónea para la actividad comercial y el intercambio cultural.

Intensamente influida por su personalidad marítima desde su fundación,Valencia es hoy más que nunca una ciudad orientada al mar y definida por surelación con él. Fruto de esta íntima relación con el mar, de su capacidadorganizadora de grandes eventos y del empeño de todas las administracionespúblicas, Valencia fue elegida entre 65 ciudades de todo el mundo como sedede la 32ª edición de la Copa América. Este acontecimiento internacional que secelebró en la primavera de 2007, convirtió a la ciudad en una privilegiadaventana al Mediterráneo, en la que cada visitante fue un espectador deexcepción. En esta atractiva ciudad bañada por el Mediterráneo va a encontrarsuaves temperaturas, una rica gastronomía, fiestas y tradiciones que semantienen vivas, una amplia oferta cultural y de ocio.

Historia de la ciudad

La ciudad se fundó con el nombre de Valentia Edetanorum en el año 138 a.d.C,siendo el cónsul romano Décimo Junio Bruto Galaico. En el 75 a.d.C. la ciudad esdestruida durante la guerra entre Pompeyo y Sertorio y de nuevo en el siglo Iresurge con motivo de la inmigración de nuevos ciudadanos y la construcción deedificios públicos. Las invasiones bárbaras rompen con la romanización ydesaparecen prácticamente las actividades comerciales. Después la ciudad pasaa estar dominada por los visigodos y en el año 711 es conquistada por losmusulmanes. En Balansiya (nombre de la ciudad en árabe) se instala Abd al-Allah, hijo del primer emir de Córdoba, que crea un gobierno autónomo sobreel área de Valencia, aportando su lengua, religión y costumbres.

Durante la Edad Media cobra gran importancia en la ciudad la figura de RodrigoDíaz de Vivar, el Cid, que fue desterrado a Valencia y en julio de 1093, tras lamuerte del rey de Balansiya, pone sitio a la ciudad asumiendo su mandato. ElCid murió en Valencia el 10 de julio de 1099 y su esposa Doña Jimena, con la

ayuda de Ramón Berenguer III de Barcelona, consiguió defender la ciudad hastael año 1101 en que se ordenó la evacuación de la ciudad ante el empuje de losalmorávides. La ciudad es reconquistada definitivamente por Jaime I en el año1238, creándose los fueros para el Reino. Durante el siglo XV la ciudad vive unagran expansión pasando de los 40.000 a los 75.000 habitantes y se construyenimportantes edificios como el Micalet (torre de la Catedral), las Torres deSerranos o la Lonja de la Seda y los Mercaderes, donde se establece la Taula deCanvis, que potencia el comercio en la ciudad.

En el siglo XVIII la ciudad toma partido por el Archiduque Carlos de Austriadurante la Guerra de Sucesión, resistiendo hasta la derrota en la batalla deAlmansa el 25 de abril de 1707. Como consecuencia de ello la ciudad atraviesauna fuerte depresión, perdiendo sus fueros y sufriendo una degradación de laautonomía cultural y política. Durante el siglo XIX la revolución industrial y elProyecto General del Ensanche redactado por los arquitectos SebastiánMonleón, Antonio Sancho y Timoteo Calvo permiten que la población seduplique , un crecimiento que se acentuó si cabe en el siglo XX pasando laciudad de los 213.550 habitantes de 1900 a los más de 800.000 actuales. Duranteun corto periodo de la Guerra Civil, entre noviembre de 1936 y octubre de 1937Valencia se convierte en la sede del gobierno republicano y en 1957 la ciudadsufre una de sus peores tragedias con una gran riada que provoca gravesconsecuencias para la ciudad, así como el posterior desvío del cauce del río Turia.

La economía valenciana poco a poco se iría recuperando de este contratiempocreciendo hasta la actualidad, en que constituye una de las más florecientes denuestro país. La última expansión de la ciudad ha venido motivada por laconstrucción de emblemáticos edificios como la Ciudad de las Artes y las Cienciaso por acontecimientos como la designación como sede de la Copa América deVela 2007.

Monumentos más importantes

Los principales monumentos de la ciudad son reflejo de su rica historia y de lasdiferentes culturas que han pasado por ella. Uno de los edificios mássignificativos es la Lonja de la Seda (1482-1498), que fue declarado por laUNESCO Patrimonio de la Humanidad en 1996, sin duda una de las obras másrepresentativas del gótico civil en Europa. Muy cerca de ella podemos encontrartambién el Mercado Central y la Iglesia de los Santos Juanes.

En el Centro Histórico también merecen destacarse el Palau de la Generalitat, laBasílica de la Virgen de los Desamparados y la Catedral de Valencia, situados enla plaza de la Virgen. La torre campanario de la Catedral, el conocido como“Miguelete” (o Micalet en valenciano) es uno de los símbolos de la ciudad.También digna de visita es la plaza Redonda, una curiosa plaza porticada que

alberga un mercado. Este casco histórico estuvo rodeado hasta finales del sigloXIX por una muralla, de la que se conservan las Torres de Quart y las de Serranos. Otro punto de interés es el barrio de l’Eixample, con bonitos edificios de estiloart nouveau y que alberga construcciones dignas de visita como el Mercado deColón o la Estación del Norte, uno de los principales centros ferroviarios del país.

Junto a todos estos edificios herencia de su pasado la ciudad ha sabidoadaptarse a los nuevos tiempos y fruto de ello son proyectos como la Ciudad delas Artes y de las Ciencias, diseñada por el prestigioso arquitecto valencianoSantiago Calatrava junto al antiguo cauce del Río Turia. Con una superficieaproximada de 350.000m2 es un centro lúdico de vanguardia de difusióncientífica y cultural que se ha convertido en todo un signo de identidad de laciudad.

En los alrededores del núcleo urbano se encuentran igualmente espaciosnaturales de gran interés, destacando el Parque Natural de la Albufera, situadoa unos 15 kilómetros del extremo sur de la ciudad, que constituye el mayor lagode la Península Ibérica. Se trata de un antiguo golfo marino cerrado por unarestinga o cordón litoral y alimentado por las aguas dulces de barrancos,acequias y surgencias denominadas “ullals”.

Ocio y gastronomía

Como ciudad en pleno movimiento de transformación, Valencia cuenta con unagran oferta cultural y de ocio. Siguiendo con su tradición de ciudadmediterránea, muchas de sus manifestaciones públicas se suelen dar en espaciosabiertos que facilitan la participación de sus ciudadanos. Una de las mássignificativas es la festividad de “Las Fallas”, fiesta de Interés turísticointernacional celebrada en el mes de marzo en honor a San José, que atraentodos los años a miles de visitantes. Las fallas son construcciones artísticas demateriales combustibles que suelen representar personajes de actualidad ycomposiciones de elementos que se queman en la noche del 19 de marzo.

Además, la ciudad es conocida por su Mostra de Valencia de cine que el pasadomes de octubre celebró su vigesimoséptima edición y que se ha convertido entodo un referente del cine mediterráneo. También merece la pena destacarse elCertamen Internacional de Bandas de Música Ciudad de Valencia, un evento queviene celebrándose desde el año 1886 y que reúne a más de 2.000 músicos en losescenarios del Palau de la Música y la Plaza de Toros.

Valencia también es afamada por su animada vida nocturna, que atrae a los másjóvenes especialmente durante los fines de semana. En la ciudad se puede cenarhasta altas horas de la noche, encontrar música en vivo y multitud de locales,pubs, discotecas, cafés teatros… La ciudad también es sede de importantes

eventos deportivos, destacando además del Campeonato del Mundo deatletismo en pista cubierta 2008, la 32ª Copa América, el trofeo deportivo másantiguo del mundo con 152 años de historia y que reúne a la élite de la velamundial.

En cuanto a la gastronomía, el visitante podrá encontrar una amplia oferta enla que predominan los productos de la huerta y los postres. El plato valencianomás afamado a nivel mundial es la paella, con base de arroz al que se añadenotros productos de la zona como carne de pollo o legumbres frescas. Igualmenteson conocidos otros platos de arroces como el arroz a banda, arroz negro o el“arrós al forn”. También podemos citar a la horchata, la bebida autóctona deValencia, elaborada a base de chufa.

Valencia es el centro cultural, político y económico de la ComunidadValenciana. Las otras dos provincias de la Comunidad son Castellón y Alicante.

Área El área total de la Comunidad Valenciana es 23.260 m2.

Población Alrededor de 4.470.885 habitantes en la Comunidad, delos cuales 1.730.853 viven en Valencia y su regiónmetropolitana.

Horarios de comercio Las tiendas en Valencia abren aproximadamente a las9:00 o a las 10:00, cierran para comer entre 13:30 o 14:00y abren de nuevo por la tarde a las 16:00 o 17:00 hasta las20:00 o 21:30. Los grandes centros comerciales, sinembargo, no cierran generalmente a la hora de lacomida. Algunas tiendas y todos los centros comerciales ygrandes almacenes abren el Sábado por la tarde y estáncerrados los Domingos, excepto en ciertos periodos delaño cuando tienen permiso para abrir. La mayor parte de los bancos abren sobre las 8:00 ó 8:30y cierran a las 14:00 ó 14:30. No obstante, en la ciudadexiste una red importante de cajeros automáticos dondese puede obtener dinero a cualquier hora.

EL PALACIO VELÓDROMO LUIS PUIG

La sede de la competición va a ser el Palau Velódromo Luis Puig, uno de losmejores escenarios para la práctica del atletismo en pista cubierta en el mundo.Situado en la zona noroeste de la ciudad, en el barrio de Benimámet y junto a laFeria de Muestras, fue inaugurado en su primera fase en el verano de 1992 conmotivo de la celebración del Campeonato del Mundo de ciclismo en pista.Finalizada esta competición se instaló la cubierta, oficializándose la apertura deesta segunda fase el 9 de noviembre de aquel año por parte de SS.MM. los ReyesJuan Carlos y Sofía. En 1994 se acometieron las obras de la tercera y última fasede la instalación, con la construcción en la parte interior del velódromo de unapista de atletismo de 200 metros de cuerda, que en febrero de 1995 acogió elCampeonato de España en pista cubierta y que tres años más tarde fue escenariode una inolvidable edición del Campeonato de Europa en pista cubierta.

A lo largo de sus 15 años de historia la instalación ha acogido importantesacontecimientos deportivos y culturales. Los más destacados son los citadosCampeonatos del Mundo de ciclismo de 1992 y Campeonato de Europa deatletismo en pista cubierta de 1998 y además el Campeonato de Europa denatación de 2000 para el que se construyó una piscina en el interior del recintoen tiempo récord que fue demolida con la misma rapidez, Campeonato deEuropa de ciclismo en pista de 2004, Campeonatos de España de atletismo bajotecho, el Master de España de Tenis, reuniones internacionales de atletismo,Copa de España de clubes de atletismo, nacional de gimnasia rítmica, Torneointernacional de billar, Mundial de baile para mayores, III y IV CongresosInternacionales de Aerobic, conciertos de importantes solistas y gruposinternacionales... Además, el Palau es la sede de la Federación de ciclismo de laComunidad Valenciana y del Centro Especializado de Alto Rendimiento deciclismo en pista.

De cara a la celebración del Campeonato del Mundo en pista cubierta de 2008el Palau Velódromo Luis Puig ha acometido unas importantes obras deadecuación y ampliación de sus instalaciones para responder a las necesidadesque implica un acontecimiento de semejante importancia. El 2 de noviembre de2006 fue presentada la primera de las veinte actuaciones previstas que consistióen la instalación de un lucernario y cubierta nuevos lo que permite la entradade luz natural controlando su difusión y mejora el aislamiento térmico y luegolas obras de reforma se centraron en la adaptación y redistribución de las salaspara las necesidades de la competición, así como la mejora de la instalacióneléctrica y de audio y construcción de gradas para autoridades, prensa y públicocon lo que el aforo del Estadio ha aumentado hasta las 6.000 localidades.

Dentro de todas las obras de reforma de la instalación, para las que se destinóuna inversión total de 3,4 millones de euros, destaca la unión del recintodeportivo con la anexa Feria de Valencia, de forma que el pabellón ferialnúmero 5 y el velódromo constituyen un todo. El recinto Ferial albergará la pistay el área de calentamiento de los atletas, así como el centro de prensa, lastaquillas y otras instalaciones. Igualmente se ha renovado todo el materialsintético de la pista, inaugurándose ésta el pasado 3 de Diciembre.

4.1. LLEGADA POR AVIÓN

El Aeropuerto oficial de la competición es el de Valencia (Manises). El ComitéOrganizador garantiza el transporte desde este Aeropuerto a los hotelesoficiales de prensa. A su llegada a Valencia, cada periodista deberá dirigirse alÁrea de llegadas donde entrará en contacto con el personal del ComitéOrganizador. Estas personas son fácilmente identificables y podrán contestarcualquier pregunta que se les plantee sobre la competición. Igualmente existiráun Mostrador de Información en el Hall de llegadas.

4.2. NECESIDADES DE VISADO

Para pedir un visado de entrada en España el pasaporte debe tener una validezde 6 (seis) meses después de la fecha programada de regreso desde España.

Las autoridades competentes reconocen la importancia de los Campeonatos ycooperarán con el Comité Organizador para facilitar la entrada de todas laspersonas involucradas en el Campeonato en España.

Si necesita una invitación oficial del Comité Organizador para obtener el visado, porfavor envíen con tiempo suficiente la solicitud con la siguiente información: fechade nacimiento y sexo de la persona, número de pasaporte y fecha de expedición yla ciudad con Embajada de España o Consulado donde se retirará el visado.

TRANSPORTES

6.1. EL MOSTRADOR DE INFORMACIÓN DEL COMITÉ ORGANIZADOR

El Mostrador de información del Comité Organizador estará situado en larecepción de los hoteles para informar de todo lo referente al plan detransportes. Allí se podrán consultar los horarios de autobuses desde los hotelesde prensa hasta el Palau Velódromo Luis Puig y al resto de ruedas de prensa yactos oficiales.

6.2. SERVICIO DE AUTOBUSES

Existirá un servicio regular de autobuses entre los Hoteles de Prensa(Confortel****, Confortel***, Ibis Palacio de Congresos y Valencia Park) y elPalau Velódromo Luis Puig. El horario de autobuses se publicará en el Mostradorde Información de todos los hoteles de prensa.

La organización proveerá transporte igualmente a la rueda de prensa oficial,que se celebrará el jueves 6 de marzo por la mañana y al resto de recepciones yactos oficiales destinados a los Medios de Comunicación. El horario de losmismos se podrá consultar en el Mostrador de información de los hoteles.

6.3. SERVICIO DE TRANSPORTE PÚBLICO

Junto con la acreditación se entregará a todos los representantes de los Mediosde Comunicación un pase de transportes que permitirá desplazarse de formagratuita en la red de transportes públicos de la ciudad de Valencia durante lasemana de la competición. Este pase deberá llevarse siempre bien visible ymostrarse al personal de la Empresa Municipal de Transportes de Valencia encaso de ser requerido. En el anexo IV se ofrece un plano de Metro de Valenciapara más información. ACREDITACIONES

7.1. PROCESO DE ACREDITACIÓN

Cada representante de los medios de comunicación recibirá una tarjeta deacreditación, que deberá mantenerse visible siempre. El personal de seguridadcontrolará el acceso a las diferentes áreas de la competición. La acreditación noes transferible y no está permitido que otra persona tome la acreditación queno le corresponda más allá de los puntos de comprobación. Las tarjetas deacreditación se realizarán con anterioridad a la disputa de la competición, deacuerdo a la información facilitada por los representantes de los medios decomunicación que deberán haber cumplimentado los impresos de acreditaciónremitidos a través de las diferentes Federaciones Miembro de la IAAF antes dela fecha límite del 15 de febrero. Junto con la tarjeta de acreditación seentregará una tarjeta que dará acceso gratuitamente a la red de transportepúblico de la ciudad de Valencia durante la semana de la competición.

Cualquier pérdida o deterioro de la tarjeta de acreditación debe ser comunicadoinmediatamente al Centro de Información del Comité Organizador. Unduplicado de la tarjeta se podrá obtener siempre que se pueda acreditar laidentidad de la persona acreditada.

7.2. EL CENTRO DE ACREDITACIONES DE PRENSA

Los representantes de los medios de comunicación deberán recoger su tarjeta deacreditación en el Centro Principal de Acreditaciones, situado en el Centro deEventos de la Feria de Valencia, anexo al Palau Velódromo Luis Puig. Éstefuncionará entre los días 1 y 9 de marzo en horario de 08:00 a 20:00 horas.

8.1. CENTRO PRINCIPAL DE PRENSA

El Centro Principal de Prensa está situado en el Hall del Centro de Eventos de laFeria de Valencia, a sólo 200 metros del Palau Velódromo Luis Puig, escenario dela competición y estará conectado con el mismo por un pasillo de uso exclusivopara los Medios de Comunicación. Su horario de apertura será el siguiente:

Habrá un Subcentro de Prensa de 60m2 situado en el Salón FÓRUM del HotelConfortel Aqua****, principal hotel de prensa. Contará con dos ordenadores delibre acceso a Internet y una impresora y con casilleros de información para losperiodistas acreditados. Su horario de funcionamiento será el siguiente:

8.3. TRIBUNA DE PRENSA

Los puestos de trabajo para los Medios de Comunicación dentro del PalauVelódromo Luis Puig estarán situados en la Tribuna Principal, junto a la recta demeta. Concretamente la Tribuna de Prensa contará con más o menos 150pupitres de tres asientos cada uno (total 450 puestos), que contarán conmonitores de TV y CIS. Cada posición de prensa contará con tomas deelectricidad y de cable de red. Además, en toda la tribuna de prensa se podráconectar a Internet gratuitamente mediante sistema WIFI. La tribuna de prensacontará igualmente con 50 asientos sin pupitre.

Junto a la entrada de prensa se situará un plano con la localización de lasdiversas posiciones de prensa.

8.4. ZONA MIXTA

La zona mixta estará situada al mismo nivel que la tribuna de prensa y es pordonde los atletas abandonan la pista después de tomar parte en sus respectivaspruebas. El orden de colocación de los medios de comunicación dentro de laZona Mixta es el siguiente:Posiciones dedicadas para las cadenas de TVPosiciones de cámaras ENG de TVZona de radio y prensa escrita con una longitud de 40 metros.

8.5. SALA DE CONFERENCIAS DE PRENSA

Justo detrás de la tribuna de prensa se encuentra situada la Sala de Conferenciascon capacidad para 75 personas, con un fácil acceso desde la Zona Mixta.Después de cada prueba se celebrarán Conferencias de Prensa con todos losmedallistas en inglés y español. Los horarios de estas Conferencias de Prensa semostrarán en un tablón de anuncios situado a la entrada de la Sala deConferencias de Prensa.

8.6. SALA DE TRABAJO Y PLATAFORMAS DE FOTÓGRAFOS

La sala de trabajo de fotógrafos se situará dentro del Centro de Eventos de laFeria de Valencia y anexa al Centro Principal de Prensa con capacidad para 75personas. Desde aquí se tendrá fácil acceso a las taquillas y a los casilleros deinformación. Igualmente, la sala de trabajo de fotógrafos se encuentra situadajunto al Restaurante del Centro de Prensa. Contarán con monitores de TV paraseguir la competición y CIS. Los editores gráficos de las grandes agencias deinformación contarán igualmente con un espacio reservado para trabajar en elmismo túnel de acceso a la pista en el Palau Velódromo Luis Puig.

Un número limitado de fotógrafos tendrán acceso al interior de la pista yestarán permanentemente identificados con un peto de color rojo. Asimismo, elresto de fotógrafos podrán trabajar por el perímetro exterior de la pista yportarán un peto de color verde. Todos los fotógrafos contarán con diversasplataformas repartidas por el velódromo que rodea la pista de atletismo parapoder cubrir todas las carreras y los diferentes concursos en competición.Igualmente tendrán un espacio reservado en la parte delantera del escenario depremiación para poder tomar imágenes de las Ceremonias de entrega demedallas. Por último, se reservarán algunos asientos en la instalación para usoexclusivo de fotógrafos.

9.1. RUEDA DE PRENSA IAAF/COMITÉ ORGANIZADOR

Se celebrará el jueves 6 de Marzo a las 12:00 horas en el Ayuntamiento deValencia. Los periodistas dispondrán de un servicio de autobuses desde loshoteles de prensa hasta el Ayuntamiento.

9.2. BRIEFING DE FOTÓGRAFOS

Se celebrará el jueves 6 de Marzo a las 16:00 horas en el Centro de Fotógrafosdel Centro Principal de Prensa en el Centro de Eventos de la Feria de Valencia yestará dirigida por Rafael Seguí, responsable de fotógrafos del Campeonato.Después de dar las indicaciones oportunas se distribuirán los petos a losfotógrafos acreditados.
