%eading section

The pancreas is a small L-shaped organ which sits againts the duodenum behind the

stomach. It is quite small, at around 15 cm long. The pancreatic duct runs along the middle othe pancreas and empties into the duodenum. It supplies pancreatic en!"mes, also calledpancreatic #uices, which aid in the digestion process. This is described as the e$ocrineunction o the pancreas, exo meaning %out o&. Pancreatic #uices low out o the pancreasthrough the pancreatic duct. The pancreatic duct is #oined b" the common bile duct beoreempt"ing into the duodenum. The pancreas also has an endocrine unction, endo meaning%within&.

This is the release o hormone within the bloodstream. There are our main t"pes o hormoneproduced in the hormone producing cells o the pancreas the islets o Langerhans 'islet cell(.)ne o the our cell t"pes -beta cells-produce insulin. The unction o insulin is to lower theblood sugar le*el. +eta cells mae up almost eight" percent o all islet cell. lpha cells maeup almost twent" percent, and these release glucagon, which raises the le*el o glucose inthe blood. This is the opposite unction to insulin. The le*el o glucose in the blood is calledeither blood sugar le*el '+L( or blood glucose le*el '+/L(. Insulin stimulates cells in thebod" to use or store the glucose produced rom the metabolism o carboh"drates in ood./lucose is used in the bod" as an energ" source.
