Evangelio: Marcos 9: 30-37 En aquel tiempo, Jesús y sus discípulos atravesaban Galilea, pero él no quería que nadie lo supiera, porque iba enseñando a sus discípulos. Les decía: “El Hijo del hombre va a ser entregado en manos de los hombres; le darán muerte, y tres días después de muerto, resucitará”. Pero ellos no entendían aquellas palabras y tenían miedo de pedir explicaciones. Lle-garon a Cafarnaúm, y una vez en casa, les preguntó: “¿De qué discutían por el camino?” Pero ellos se quedaron calla-dos, porque en el camino habían discutido sobre quién de ellos era el más importante. Entonces Jesús se sentó, llamó a los Doce y les dijo: “Si alguno quiere ser el primero, que sea el último de todos y el servidor de todos”. CULTURA CATOLICA / CATHOLIC CULTURE SAINT VINCENT OF PAUL

Vincent was born at Pouy in Gascony, in the south of France, in 1580 or 1581, the third child in a family of four sons and two daugh-ters. His family was a solid peasant family capable of making ends meet only through hard work and frugality. His father encouraged and helped him toward the priesthood, to which he was ordained on September 23, 1600, at the age of nineteen or twenty. Among his chief reasons for becoming a priest was his desire to get an office in the Church from which he could obtain enough money to retire early, return home, and provide for his family. His early hopes for advancement came to nothing (two trips to Rome, promises of a bishopric, money from a will). In 1608, Vincent moved to Paris, where he came under the influence of Father (later Cardinal) Pierre de Bérulle, whom he took as his spiritual director, and Father André Duval, a professor of the Sorbonne, who was to be his "wise man" for the next three decades. This marked a turning point in Vincent's spiritual journey: ambition was receding, and at-tention to God and vocation were advancing. Accused of theft by his roommate, Vincent did not defend himself, showing himself to be more like the Lord and less interested in self-advancement and public image — the real thief confessed years lat-er. In 1612, he was named pastor of Saint-Medard in Clichy, a poor rural parish just northwest of Paris. As pastor, he experienced the priesthood in a way unknown to him to that point, and told the bish-op he was happier than the bishop himself, and even the pope. However, in less than a year Bérulle recalled him to Paris to become chaplain to the Gondi family and tutor to their children. In January of 1617, Vincent was on the Gondi estates in Picardy, and heard the confession of a dying man, who told Madame de Gondi that he would have been damned without Vincent's ministry. She urged Vin-cent to preach a sermon on general confessions, which produced such a response that other priests were called to help hear all the confessions. Now, very conscious that the poor were not being evangelized or helped, Vincent felt called to a more pastoral ministry. With Bérul-le's help, he became the parish priest in Châtillon-les-Dombes in the southeast of France, helping his fellow priests to a more faithful way of life, as well as ministering to and teaching the people. In August 1617, as he was preparing for Sunday Mass, a parishioner brought news of the illness and destitution of an entire family in the parish. He preached on their need, and that afternoon the people responded in overwhelming numbers by carrying them food and supplies. Vin-cent then called a meeting of interested women, and urged them to put order into their generosity by taking turns. With rules drawn up by Vincent, they established a group which became the first Confra-ternity of Charity. By December, 1617, Madame de Gondi prevailed in her request that Vincent return to their family by giving him freedom to preach mis-sions in various towns and villages. In 1619, at the urging of Mon-sieur de Gondi, King Louis XIII, appointed Vincent chaplain general of the galleys with responsibility for the spiritual well-being of all the galley convicts of France. During this period Vincent experienced a twofold conversion. First, he was being converted to the poor, who were becoming the center of his life. Second, he was also being converted to his priesthood, seeing it not as a career, but as a personal relationship with Jesus. However, his "conversion" does not seem to rest on one dramatic moment, but rather on a gradual opening to the power of God's grace working in him, and allowing him to see his world more clearly in the light of Christ.

Toward the end of 1618, the bishop of Geneva, Francis de Sales, arrived in Paris, and inspired Vincent with the power of humility and gentleness. Vincent reflected: "How good you must be, my God, if Francis de Sales, your creature, is so gentle and lovable." Vincent's disposition was naturally moody and melancholy, but he now decid-ed that he could not simply say he was made that way and could not change. He went to Soissons to make a retreat, asking God to help him change. His prayer was answered, not immediately, but gradual-ly as he came to understand the direction his priesthood should go and the beauty of serving others. Vincent continued giving local missions to the people. Madame de Gondi, seeing the effect of these missions, set aside money for a community to preach such missions on a wider scale, and asked Vin-cent to find a community able and willing to do so. Vincent asked the Jesuits and several other communities, but none were able to accept this additional apostolate. Vincent went to his old mentor, Father Duval, to share his concern and ask for advice. Duval told him that God was clearly calling Vincent himself to do the work of the missions. Vincent accepted the call, and in April, 1625, founded the Congregation of the Mission to evangelize the poor people of the countryside. The Archbishop of Paris approved the Congregation, giving them the Collège des Bons Enfants for a motherhouse. Members were secular priests who made simple vows of poverty, chastity, obedience and stability. In 1628, the Congregation gave its first retreat to candidates for the priesthood in preparation for their ordination. This gradually led to additional efforts to help priests in their vocation. In 1633, the motherhouse moved to the former priory of Saint-Lazare, north of the city. Beginning in 1635, additional houses were established, in France, in other European countries, and in Africa. Vincent also served as spiritual director for a growing number of people, one of whom was a widow, Louise de Marillac, in whom Vincent saw lead-ership potential. The Ladies of Charity, a coalition of noblewomen Vincent had organized to serve poor people, had grown and spread, as had the Confraternities of Charity. Vincent found it impossible to oversee all these groups, so he turned to Louise. Despite frail health, Louise traveled from town to town, visiting, guiding and encourag-ing the fledging organizations. Vincent assumed direction of the Hôtel-Dieu, a large hospital in Par-is. Both Vincent and Louise realized that greater commitment would be needed to give the necessary care with consistency and love. Young women from rural areas began to appear, ready to assist. In 1633, Louise welcomed several of them into her own home for train-ing, and they became the nucleus of a new type of religious commu-nity, the Daughters of Charity. They lived in houses, not convents; their cloister was the city streets; their enclosure was their commit-ment to God and service. They gave their lives to visiting the sick in the homes, ministering in hospitals, caring for prisoners, orphans, the mentally ill, and the homeless of Paris. They also taught catechism to rural children. In 1639, Lorraine was devastated by war. Vincent collected money and other forms of aid, sending members of his Congregation to distribute the aid and organize relief, and sending Daughters of Char-ity to minister to victims and refugees. This ministry continued dur-ing the 30 years war, and a brutal civil war called the Fronde. In June of 1643, Vincent began serving on the Queen's Council of Ecclesiastical Affairs. There he exercised significant influence on the selection of good and worthy bishops, oversaw the renewal of mo-nastic life, dealt with Jansenism, and was able to keep the plight of the people and the poor before the government of France. Vincent continued his work until his death on September 27, 1660.

Fiesta Litúrgica, 29 de septiembre Los 3 Arcángeles, los únicos cuyos nombres constan en la Biblia.

Martirologio Romano: Fiesta de los santos arcángeles Mi-guel, Gabriel y Rafael. En el día de la dedicación de la basílica bajo el título de San Miguel, en la vía Salaria, a seis miliarios de Roma, se celebran juntamente los tres arcángeles, de quienes la Sagrada Escritura revela misiones singulares y que, sirvien-do a Dios día y noche.

Breve Semblanza

Son los nombres con que se presentan en la Sagrada Escritura estos tres príncipes de la corte celestial. Miguel aparece en defensa de los intereses divinos ante la re-belión de los ángeles malos; Gabriel, enviado por el Señor a diferentes misiones, anunció a la Virgen Maria el misterio de la Encarnación del Hijo de Dios y su maternidad divina; Rafael acompañó al joven Tobías cuando cumplía un difícil encargo y se ocupó de solucionar difíciles asuntos de su esposa. Actualmente, se habla mucho de los ángeles: se encuentran libros de todo tipo que tratan este tema; se venden "angelitos" de oro, plata o cuarzo; las personas se los cuelgan al cuello y comentan su importancia y sus nombres. Hay que tener cuidado, pues se puede caer en dar a los án-geles atribuciones que no les corresponden y elevarlos a un lugar de semidioses, convertirlos en "amuletos" que hacen caer en la idolatría, o crear confusiones entre lo que son las inspiraciones del Espíritu Santo y los consejos de los ánge-les.

Es verdad que los ángeles son muy importantes en la Iglesia y en la vida de todo católico, pero son criaturas de Dios, por lo que no se les puede igualar a Dios ni adorarlos. A pesar de que están de moda, por otro lado, es muy fácil que nos olvidemos de su existencia, por el ajetreo de la vida y prin-cipalmente, porque no los vemos. Este olvido puede hacernos desaprovechar muchas gracias que Dios ha destinado para nosotros a través de los ángeles. Por esta razón, la Iglesia ha fijado dos festividades para que, al menos dos días del año, nos acordemos de los ángeles y los arcángeles, nos alegremos y agradezcamos a Dios el que nos haya asignado un ángel custodio y aprovechemos estos días para pedir su ayuda.

Misión de los ángeles

Los ángeles son seres espirituales creados por Dios por una libre decisión de su Voluntad divina. Son seres inmortales, dotados de inteligencia y voluntad. Debido a su naturaleza espiritual, los ángeles no pueden ser vistos ni captados por los sentidos.

En algunas ocasiones muy especiales, con la intervención de Dios, se han visto y oído materialmente. La reacción de las per-sonas al verlos u oírlos ha sido de asombro y de respeto. Por ejemplo, los profetas Daniel y Zacarías. En el siglo IV, el arte religioso representó a los ángeles con for-ma de figura humana. En el siglo V, se le añadieron las alas, co-mo símbolo de su prontitud en realizar la Voluntad divina y en trasladarse de un lugar a otro sin la menor dificultad. En la Biblia encontramos algunos motivos para que los ángeles sean representados como seres brillantes, de aspecto humano y alados. Por ejemplo, el profeta Daniel escribe que un "ser que parecía varón" -se refería al arcángel Gabriel- volando rápida-mente, vino a él (Daniel 8, 15-16; 9,21). Y, en el libro del Apoca-lipsis, son frecuente las apariciones de ángeles que claman, to-can las trompetas, llevan mensajes o son portadores de copas e incensarios; otros que suben, bajan o vuelan; otros que están de pie en cada uno de los cuatro puntos cardinales de la tierra o junto al trono del Cordero, Cristo. La misión de los ángeles es amar, servir y dar gloria a Dios, ser mensajeros y cuidar y ayudar a los hombres. Ellos están cons-tantemente en la presencia de Dios, atentos a sus órdenes, oran-do, adorando, vigilando, cantando y alabando a Dios y prego-nando sus perfecciones. Se puede decir que son mediadores, custodios, guardianes, protectores y ministros de la justicia divina. La presencia y la acción de los ángeles aparece a lo largo del Antiguo Testamento, en muchos de sus libros sagrados. Apare-ce frecuentemente, también, en la vida y enseñanzas de Nuestro Señor, Jesucristo, en la Carta de san Pablo, en los Hechos de los Apóstoles y, principalmente, en el Apocalipsis. Con la lectura de estos textos, podemos descubrir algo más acerca de los ángeles: nos protegen, nos defienden físicamente y nos fortalecen al combatir las fuerzas del mal, luchan con todo su poder por y con nosotros. Como ejemplo, está la milagrosa liberación de San Pedro que pudo huir de la prisión ayudado por un ángel (Hechos 12, 7 y siguientes). También, aparece un ángel deteniendo el brazo de Abraham, para que no sacrificara a su hijo, Isaac. Los ángeles nos comunican mensajes importantes del Señor en determinadas circunstancias de la vida. En momentos de difi-cultad, se les puede pedir luz para tomar una decisión, para solucionar un problema, actuar acertadamente y para descubrir la verdad. Por ejemplo, tenemos las apariciones a la Virgen María, a San José y a Zacarías. Todos ellos recibieron mensajes de los ánge-les. Los ángeles presentan nuestras oraciones al Señor y nos condu-cen a Él. Nos acompañan a lo largo de nuestra vida y nos condu-cirán, con toda bondad, después de nuestra muerte, hasta el trono de Dios para nuestro encuentro definitivo con Él. Este será el último servicio que nos presten pero el más importante. El arcángel Rafael dice a Tobías: "Cuando ustedes oraban, yo presentaba sus oraciones al Señor", (Tob 12, 12 - 16). Ellos nos animan a ser buenos pues ven continuamente el rostro de Dios y también ven el nuestro. Debemos tener presentes las inspiraciones de los ángeles para saber obrar correctamente en todas las circunstancias de la vida. "Los ángeles se regocijan cuando un pecador se arrepiente", (Lucas 15, 10).

In collaboration with the City of Maywood and St. Rose of Lima, Catholic Church, graduate students from the Department of Educational Leadership at California State University, Fullerton will host the 9th Annual Education Fair on Saturday: October 13th from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm at St. Rosa de Lima. The fair will consist of activities and workshops for students, parents, and community members to learn about the process of going to col‐lege including how to apply for college, career and vocational occupations, and the financial aid process. This FREE event allows students from kindergarten to High School and parents to explore higher education options.
