Cultural Fact:

In Spanish-speaking countries, children often have two birthday celebrations. They

celebrate their actual birthday AND their saint’s day (the patron for which they

were named). On their saint’s day, the celebrants attend church and are blessed

by a priest. They then have a quiet party with relatives and family friends. Children

also celebrate their birth with a large celebration including friends, family, music,

food and a piñata. When a Mexican girl celebrates her 15th birthday, a

quinceañera is held in her honor. There is a special mass held and often a lavish

party that includes friends, neighbors, and relatives. Typically, girls wear a beautiful

gown, have attendants, and prepare months in advance for this special birthday.

On December 24th many Mexican people go to

midnight mass. After mass it is traditional to

return home to have Christmas dinner with

family and friends. An important tradition is

placing the baby Jesús in the nativity scene.

On December 31st, holiday festivities include

the celebration of the Rooster’s Mass at

midnight. Mexican people go to church to

give thanks for all blessings received during

the year, and celebrate the arrival of the New

Year with beautiful fireworks. Eating twelve

grapes at 12 o’clock is a common Spanish

tradition: one grape for each of the coming

twelve months.

On January 6th, Three Kings day is celebrated.

In many families, this is when gifts are

exchanged to commemorate the gifts brought

to the baby Jesús by the three kings. Special

bread called “La Rosca de Reyes” and hot

Q: Why does Spanish use the inverted (upside down) question mark at the beginning of the

question?

A: Simple answer? Because. More complicated answer: The syntax of a sentence does not

Interpersonal: Soy de México

In this interpersonal assessment you and a classmate will have a conversation in Spanish, describing where you are from in Mexico, and discussing your likes and your upcoming plans.

Each student will ask THREE of the questions below; #1, #2, and either #3 OR #4. Since you won’t know until the assessment exactly which question you’ll have, you should be prepared to ask AND answer ALL of the questions. Begin your conversation with a greeting, and end with a good-bye.

Remember that on an interpersonal assessment, you want to show off how much you’ve learned in this unit. You are encouraged to ask additional conversational questions and provide as much detail as possible, using a wide variety of vocabulary and grammar from the Calendario unit.
