Veterans from the Malvina's War:suicides increase
By Beatriz V. GoyoagaFor the Herald
hile the Argentine andBritish governments talk
of reconciliation, the ArgentineVeterans Association says thatmore Malvinas veterans havecommitted suicide since thewar ended than died on thebattlefields, blaming the highnumbers on inadequateassistance.
"Some 378 veterans havecommitted suicide since thewar ended while only 363died in combat", says SergioGigena, head of the VeteransAssociation in Córdoba. "Thisis a number which Argentineauthorities wish to ignore butwhich we are determined toreveal, to make Argentina
aware of the veterans'desperation". (A total of 652Argentines were killed in theMalvinas War; Gigena's figuredoes not include those whodied on the Belgrano.)
Argentina started a healthand pension plan for veteransonly in 1993, 11 years afterthe war ended, and in thewake of big demonstrationsby veterans accusing thegovernment of negligence. Bythen, several hundred men hadalready hanged or shotthemselves. In the province ofCórdoba alone, 98 mencommitted suicide with themost recent suicide takingplace this year, Gigena said.
Last month, the veteransorganized a street demonstrationdemanding a meeting withauthorities. "No governor or
government representativesever received us to listen toour plight", Gigena said. "Ourmen have been supported foryears only by other colleagues.Veterans feel like outsiders inthe civilian society. The warbecame a no-no, hush-hushthing one had to hide. As theArmed Forces apparatus isdismantled, war veteransbecome a shameful subject."
In t he p rov ince s ,veterans' resentment is evenstronger than in Buenos Airesand assistance even less. "Wewere given a heroes' sendoffand returned through the backdoor", says Eduardo Chorrero, head of the Salta VeteransAssociation. He said that twosoldiers from Salta committedsuicide. One of them jumpedonto a highway and was run

greatest disparity in distributionof wealth: 30 million live inabsolute poverty and only 38per cent of children completeprimary school.
Death squads -mostlyoff-duty police and localbusinessmen- take up "publicsecurity" where the on-dutypolice and security guardsleave off. A thousand or sochildren are killed a year.Everybody knows about thesquads but many people don'tknow that Brazil is the leadern the world in organizing
children to fight for theirrights.
The struggle started 25 yearsago but took off when theNational Movement of StreetBoys and girls was founded byeducators -outreach workers involuntary and governmentorganizations- in 1985, the yearthe dictatorship ended. In 1986,the ch i ld ren themse lvessuggested the idea of nationalmeetings. Education was theirmajor theme.
Most of the educators arefrom poor backgrounds, andthey work voluntarily inprogrammes with street childrenand poor community children:
they want profoundly, tochange society. The childrenhave been brutalized spirituallyas well as physically.
Educators give themloving, reliable companionshipand organize them into smallgroups, in which, throughworkshops and recreation, theyget a new sense of themselves.
Children from the groupshave taken many local actions, challenging municipalauthorities over policeviolence against them. theplanning of the nationalmeetings begins in thesegroups. And the children lovethem.

Texto 6: After a struggle womenwin a place on the Ice
By Cornelia DeanNew York Times
McMurdo Station, Antarctica
Twenty years ago, when JuliaUberuaga first began working inAntarctica, she was one of only a fewwomen among hundreds of men. theystared at her, or leered at her, orotherwise let her know she wasunwelcome on the job.
"I cried myself to sleep more than onenight", she recalled.
Rita Mathews, a microbiologist thenat Hunter College, remembers being"pretty well beset by men" when shedid research at McMurdo for a few seasons in the late 70s and early 80s.
"They were a nuisance", she said. "They were all over the place. There were some that wouldnever stop going after you." True to her biologist's calling, Dr. Mathews devised a taxonomyfor the Antarctic male: there were the predators, who lurked at every turn; the scavengers, whousually were considerate enough to wait for a signal before pouncing; and herbivores, whoapparently wanted nothing to do with women.
The women's usual response, Dr. Mathews said, was to link up with one man. He would keepthe others away.
Life is far different now in Mactown, as its inhabitants call McMurdo Station, the mainAmerican base in Antarctica. As 1.000 or more scientists and support staff return to "the Ice"for another season of work in the austral summer, about a third of them are women.
Like the men, they are drawn by the wild beauty of the landscape, the idea of living at one ofEarth's last frontiers and the chance to contribute to scientific research.
In the process, they are bringing profound change to one of the most unusual outposts ofAmerican society. And they have made McMurdo a king of laboratory of watching whathappens when anall-male group is gradually infiltrated by the opposite sex.
When it was established by the Navy in 1956, McMurdo had all the charm of a frontier

mining camp. Buildings were a hodgepodge of strictly utilitarian Quonset huts and sheds, painted in the military palette of gray or green and plunked down, seemingly at random, onvolcanic soil devoid of even a blade of grass. Social life centered around alcohol, lots of it, andthe first few women to visit were protected by military guards.
Today, it looks much the same. But there are women in offices and research labs, drivingtrucks, managing remote field sites and even, like Ms. Uberuaga, operating heavy earth-moving equipment. And they seem to be accepted, confident and at ease.
To researchers like Charles Moskos, a professor of sociology at Northwestern University whohas studied military organizations, the change is a matter of numbers. As more and morewomen join an organization, he said, there is a "tipping point" when its atmosphere changes.
In the military, he said, the point is somewhere between 15 percent and 20 percent of thegroup. Then, he said, "women are no longer regarded as abberant people who have to be treatedwith kid gloves".
Not suprisingly, many of the issues involving women in remote outposts relate to sex, and notjust to sexual relations. For example, Moskos said, when there are only a few women around, men may feel free to make off-color jokes, and the women may feel pressure to laugh at them.
All that stars to change at the tipping point, he said. "a more civil culture develops." Thewomen begin to censor their own behavior, and men keep other men in line.
Moreover, he and other social psychologists say, the presence of women seems to encouragemen to behave better toward each other. Past the tipping point, for example, men get into farfewer fights.
This change is good, because "aggression is one of the major things you can't tolerate" in theisolation of Antarctica, said John Nicoletti of Lakewood, Colo., a psychologist who headed theteam evaluating the men and women who spent this winter (summer in the Northern Hemisphere)on the ice. "The presence of women adds normality", he went on. "It's less like a wildernessexperience. it mimics regular society where there are rules and you have to follow them."
The change in social code has probably been accelerated by the change in McMurdo’smission since the end of the Cold War. Until then, the base was primarily a military outpostwhere some scientific work also went on. Today, it is a research establishment run by theNational Science Foundation and administered by a private contractor, Antarctic SupportAssociates. Almost everyone works as a scientist or in support of scientists.
And social life no longer revolves around Navy liquor rations.Women were almost totally excluded from Antarctica until about 30 years ago. The first
woman to set foot on the continent was Caroline Mikkelsen, the wife of a Norwegian whalingcaptain, who landed with him at the Vestfold Hills, on the Antarctica peninsula, in 1935.
The first women to winter on Antarctica were also accompanying their husbands, on a privateexpedition in 1947.
For decades, though, the nations that ran Antarctic programs officially banned women, supposedly because the rigors of the continent were too great for the women and the rigors ofproviding separate bathroom facilities were too great for the program administrators. It waswidely acknowledged, however, that the real reason was fear of sexual misconduct.
Though other countries, notably Chile and the Soviet Union, gradually allowed more andmore women into their stations, the United States’ Antarctic programs were all-male until1969, and it was not until 1974 that American women wintered over at McMurdo, two among128 men.
One was Mary Alice McWhinnie, the first woman to head scientific operations there, and theother was her assistant, Sister Mary Odile Cahoon, a teaching nun from St. Scholastica Collegein Duluth, Minn. Barbara Land described their first winter in her book, The New Explorers,(Dodd, Mead, 1981). "Both the Navy and the NSF were still a little uptight about havingwomen at McMurdo for the winter", Sister Odile told her. "I am sure they felt morecomfortable having a couple of maiden aunts test the situation."

The first women at the South Pole arrived in 1969, in a Navy plane. so that none could grabcredit for being the first woman at the Pole, the six left the plane together, walking down itsrear cargo ramp arm in arm. But women did not stay overnight at the polar base until 1971 andit was not until 1979 that a woman wintered there.
But it is only within the last few years that there have been enough women at the UnitedStates’Antarctica stations to make a big difference. When women first arrived on the Ice, theNavy Shore Patrol was still making regular sweeps to rescue men who had fallen down drunk,so they would not freeze to death in the McMurdo streets.
"It was a pretty rough place", said Rebecca Johnson, an author who first visited Antarctica in1991, as part of the NSF's Writers and Artists program. "There were three bars", she recalled,"When I came back in '94 one of those that had been the hardest-driving had been convertedinto a gym and what had been the Officers' Club had been converted into the Coffee House."Today, it is a popular after-work spot for wine, cheese, capuccino and conversation.

The 3TC complex cocktail is a combination of twodrugs that AIDS patients had to take separately, AZT and3TC.
The new drug will reduce the number of pills that HIVpositive patients have to take daily and therefore impro-ve their quality of life. A World Congress on AIDSrecently held in Geneva stressed the importance ofsimplifying treatment to produce a positive psychologi-cal effect of patients.
3TC complex, which was launched in the US at theend of last year, will be 30 percent cheaper than currentcocktails.

But researchers said it was prema-ture to recommend that people takeantibiotics to prevent heart attacksbecause infections had not been pro-ved to cause heart disease. And theoveruse of antibiotics has alreadyhelped to create dangerous strains ofdrug-resistant bacteria that are

Those with healthyhearts were more likely to have tak-encertain antibiotics: tetracycline, which lowered the risk of heart attack by 30 percent, or quinolones(Ciprofloxacin, Enoxacin and otherdrugs) which decreased the risk by55 percent. The largest and longest studyever of an obesity medicationfound that a new drug, orlis-

While orlistat is not yet appro-ved for marketing, its maker,Hoffmann-La Roche of Nutley,N.J., said that the Food and DrugAdministration had sent the com-pany a letter saying the drug couldbe approved if it sent the agencyadditional safety information.Tuesday, the company submittedthat data, said Dr. JonathanHauptman, the director of metabol-ic research at Hoffmann-La Roche.
The study, paid for byHoffmann-La Roche and published
Wednesday in the Journal ofthe American MedicalAssociation , involved 892healthy, but obese, adults, mostlywomen, who were studied at 18medical centers across the country.Their average weight at the start ofthe study was about220 pounds.
After one year, those who wererandomly assigned to take orlistatand follow a weight loss diet lostan average of 19.3 pounds whilethose assigned to take a dummypill and follow the weight lossdiet lost about 12.8 pounds. Thatmeant, Hauptman said, that theweight loss with orlistat was 50percent greater than with placebo.

the test subjects did appear to developstrong immunity, more research is needed

Are you vaccination up-to-date?
Once your child starts school, you'll be exposed to anyillnesses he brings home. So when you update your child'svaccinations at his back-to-school check-up, it´s a goodidea to check your own, too. Many diseases, such asmumps, measles and chicken pox, can be more serious inadults than in children. You may be more vulnerable tocertain illnesses if you were born after 1956. (In thedecades following, several vaccines, such as those formeasles, mumps and rubella, were still being phased inand were not yet in universal use.) Or you may be due fora booster shot. A doctor can give you a blood test tocheck your immunity, says Raymond Strikas, M.D. chiefof the Adult Vaccine Preventable Diseases Branch for theCenters for Disease Control and Prevention's NationalImmunization Program.

Texto 7 Scientists find how tomake cancer cells die
Buenos Aires Herald, 6 de enero de 1999.
British scientists said yesterday they haddiscovered how cancer cells can beinstructed to die, opening the way for newanti-cancer therapies.
The scientists, whose findings werereported in the Journal of the NationalCancer Institute, said they had identified agroup of genes that could halt the productionof the enzyme telomerase, which preventscancer cells from dying. The enzyme isfound in cancer cells but not in normalhuman cells.
"This is a mayor advance in that we havenow demonstrated that switching offtelomerase actually turns off cancer cells’division potential and stops them dividing inevery case", Professor Robert Newbold ofBrunel University in West London and alead investigator, said in a telephoneinterview.
The British research team, financed by
the Cancer Research Campaign, observedthe action of telomerase in breast cancercells. But the findings also apply to othercancers.
"Telomerase is present in virtually allcancers and is absent in virtually all normaltissues. It represents a unique biochemicaltarget against which we can smash cancereffectively", Newbold said.
The discovery opened the possibility thatscientists might develop new gene therapiesfor fighting cancer.
"A number of companies, particularly inthe US, have been trying to developchemical inhibitors of this enzyme",Newbold said.
"What our study has given to them is thereassurance that if they get a chemical thatinhibits it as effectively as the normal genedoes, then they will get a result", he added.(Reuter)

Texto 5: Pain-free vaccines of the future
Significa vacunas.
