PASTORS PONDERINGS Dear Parishioners, As we face an Advent unlike any other, we are both consoled in the First Reading and challenged by St. John the Baptist in the Gospel. Yes, past sin was acknowledged but the message of the Prophet Isaiah was of mercy and forgiveness: “Comfort, give comfort to my people, says your God, speak tenderly to Jerusalem and proclaim to her that her sentence is at an end.” Even as we plan to cele-brate Christmas, in a manner, outside, that we never expected that we would ever have to, with the develop-ment of as many as three highly effective vaccines, we have good reason to hope that we will be celebrating Easter or at least Pentecost back inside our church with great joy and with the Coronavirus crisis effectively over. That said, our remembrance of St. John the Baptist in our Liturgy each year on the Second and Third Sundays of Advent ought to remind us that our faith was never intended to be an easy one, but rather one that chal-lenges. As such, our current state of crisis can be seen as an invitation by God to wake up and to see that God calls us to a lives bigger, more challenging but honestly more beautiful than we ever thought before. When eve-rything goes well, we get bored, we take things for granted, and eventually we all fall asleep. This year has been anything but boring, conventional and without challenge and effort. As such, I do think we have grown, and I do think that we can meet St. John the Baptist at the end of our lives without embarrassment that we had just slept through most of our lives. Instead, we’ve been challenged this year to do something new, without many of the props that we had taken for granted before, and … perhaps to our surprise, we’ve done pretty well! And it really is often this way: chal-lenged, we grow! Happy Second Sunday of Advent! -- Fr. Dennis

Feliz segundo domingo de Advien-to! - P. Dennis

ST VINCENT DE PAUL—GIVES YOU THANKS!!!

St. Vincent de Paul Thanks you for Your Generosity during this difficult year St. Philip’s St. Vincent de Paul just completed its annual report and wants to share with you the results of your gifts on the struggling families in our parish boundaries. During this year we made 161 home visits aid-ing 511 individuals. At our food bank on Tuesdays and Thursdays here at the parish we helped an additional 2,850 families or 11,208 individuals. We have made every effort to use your precious money carefully and have arrangements with Albertsons and Vons to gather their surplus food and we also get monthly deliveries from the Second Harvest Food Bank. Thank you for all you do to care for the needy. Because of the COVID virus we are not able to have our normal holiday gatherings and instead will be giving gift certificates to our clients. If you are able to help us help others during this holiday season, please send a donation to SVDP through the church office. It will make a happy difference to many children and their families. God bless you for your generosity.

    FIESTA DE LA FE

    GOD’S DELAY

    FEAST OF FAITH

AN ACT OF SPIRITUAL COMMUNION My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.

In times of great difficulties scoffers taunt us, “Where is God? Why hasn’t your Lord come to save you now?” And we of faith respond much in the same way as Peter did in today’s second reading: the “delay” of the Lord’s second com-ing is not any type of punishment or failure to keep the divine promise, but a loving sign of God’s patience. God is giving everyone the chance to seek repentance. God does not make life more difficult. Rather, God lessens our burdens as once before for the Jewish exiles returning home to Judea after captivity in Babylon. It was God who personally led them, making a “straight highway” for them across the desert. We join with our ancestors of faith, who hoped that they might see God’s Chosen One before them and who eventually real-ized that the Lord was also walking with them side by side. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Watching for Christ’s Coming In the season of Advent, we look to the coming of Christ at the end of time, and we prepare ourselves to celebrate his first coming among us at Christmas. Remembrance of the past is combined with preparation for the future. Memory meets action. In a certain sense, the Mass is an Advent prayer. At the Last Supper, Jesus did not tell his disciples, “Never forget what I did for you.” Instead, he said, “Do this in remembrance of me.” He calls us to remember by doing, to combine memory with action. In the celebration of the Eucharist, remember-ing and doing become one. Jesus is as present in our midst as he was in that upper room, breaking the bread and shar-ing the cup; but it is a new kind of presence, seen only with the eyes of faith. In the heavenly liturgy, there will be no need of sacraments, for there, “celebration is wholly com-munion and feast” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1136). Here, things are different. We have only glimpses and flashes of the beauty that is yet to be. And yet, in the liturgy, we truly participate in the heavenly liturgy. The Mass is our foretaste of the joys of heaven. —Corinna Laughlin, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

—Miguel Arias, Copyright © J.
