PENSAMIENTOS DE NUESTRO PARROCO PASTORS PONDERINGS Dear Parishioners, We find ourselves this day the second of the five major Feasts of the Christmas Season, the Solemnity of the Holy Family. Each year it falls in the middle of the first Octave of Christmas which focuses of Jesus’ Humanity and begins with the Solemnity of the Nativity of the Lord (Dec 25th) and the ends with the the Solemnity of Mary, the Mother of God (Jan 1st). The Second Octave of Christmas which focuses on Jesus’ Divinity, begins with the Solemnity of the Epiphany of the Lord celebrated now on the Sunday after the New Year and ends the following Sunday with the So-lemnity of the Baptism of the Lord (or the Eastern Church-es call the feast, the Great Theophany of the Baptism of the Lord). I would encourage all of you to take time to re-flect at home with your families on all of these celebrations, as they carry within them so much that is important to our faith. So then today we celebrate the Feast of the Holy Family, where we remember that Jesus, just like all of us, entered into the world in the context of a family, loved ones, or hopefully loved ones, charged with our well-being and for-mation as we grow up. We know from the very first pages of Genesis, that this often is not easy. Right from the be-ginning Adam, the first husband, blamed Eve, the first wife for his sin. One of their sons, Cain, actually killed another of their sons, Abel, his brother out of jealousy. And it is not entirely clear how well at least the extended family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph got along with the Holy Family as Mary had to give birth Jesus in a stable in presumably St. Joseph’s hometown of Bethlehem. Living in family is often difficult and yet, they the ones who help us and allow us to grow-up to make our way through this world as adults. So on this day, please give thanks for the families that you’ve been given. Yes, no family, except the Holy Family is perfect. There may be much in need of forgiving. And yet even as much as we find that hard or uncomfortable, the practice helps us to then be kinder and more empathet-ic toward others. And this is good as ulti-mately we are all one family, having been created and loved by God our Father and destined ultimately to live together forever under one roof in Heaven. Happy Feast of the Holy Family to all! Fr. Dennis

- p. Dennis

FIESTA DE LA FE

WE ARE GOD’S HOLY FAMILY

FEAST OF FAITH

AN ACT OF SPIRITUAL COMMUNION My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.

The scriptures of Israel are filled with many stories of barren couples who were miraculously granted the gift of children by God. Surely the best known among these is the first reading from today, from which Luke took inspiration when he recounted the miraculous birth of John the Baptist to Zechariah and Elizabeth, and the more miraculous birth of Jesus to Mary and Joseph. In each instance, we are given examples or role models of those who trusted in God. More than examples of those who trust, they are models of self-surrender. They abandoned their own presuppositions and prejudices about the workings of the world and turned their lives over to belief in a God who can make life grow where none ought to; a God who can turn death around into a new and unimagined life; a God who can, today, take a tiny child of humble parents in an insignificant town and make him into a light for all the world. This is what we, as God’s holy family, are called to do each day: to trust not in ourselves and the way we think things should be, but to open ourselves and surrender ourselves in faith to a God of endless promise. Processions Why does the liturgy begin with a procession? It is not just a practical matter of getting the ministers of the liturgy from the sacristy to the sanctuary. The procession is a powerful sign of who we are as Christian people. We are not static, staying in one place. We are going somewhere. Our proces-sion leads us to the altar, sign of Christ’s presence in our midst. We move, we process, because we recognize our need for what Christ is preparing for us at that table. We go forward eagerly, because we are hungry for that heavenly food. This procession is an orderly one: servers, deacon, priest presider. Each is set apart by distinctive vesture: albs for the altar servers, dalmatic for the deacon, chasuble for the priest. The procession is an image of the hierarchical struc-ture of the Church. On a deeper level it is an image of unity in diversity. We are all on a journey to the heavenly city, but each of us is clothed with different gifts. We all receive the call to service, but not in the same way. Only by coming together in all our wonderful variety can we achieve the work of the kingdom. —Corinna Laughlin, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

—Miguel Arias, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
