PENSAMIENTOS DE NUESTRO PARROCO PASTORS PONDERINGS

Dear Parishioners, There was a Lent some years back when, since I am a Servant of Mary, I had decided for the period of Lent to try to take the per-spective of Mary in my homilies. Nowhere did I find this more interesting than on this Sunday, where the B-cycle of Readings re-calls the incident in which Jesus cleansed the temple! I could not help but wonder if Mary, stand-ing at the Foot of Jesus’ Cross one week later, had not wondered, even for a brief moment, “Oh my Jesus, what would have happened if only you had not knocked over all those tables?” Many of us have stood at the crosses of loved ones where we knew deep down that they were at least partly at fault for being in the difficulties in which they found themselves. What a thought, huh? We know of course that Jesus in his pro-phetic role had to knock down all of those tables, and that he had reason to do so. Yet, of course, there were consequences. Can we accept that sometimes we do have to act on behalf of justice even if there are consequences? Can we also, for the sake of the others around us, at least seek to “choose our battles” and seek to act pru-dently even on behalf of justice? This is not to make virtue of cowardice but simply to recognize that actions do in fact have consequences and that it’s important to seek to act wisely. May indeed, Our Lady of both the Magnificat and of Good Counsel be our guide. -- Fr. Dennis

- P. Dennis

AN ACT OF SPIRITUAL COMMUNION My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.

In previous weeks we have seen how the theme of cove-nant—as a preparation for the baptismal covenant celebrated at Easter—occupies an important place in our cycle of Len-ten readings. The notion of covenant as a relationship be-tween two parties carries with it an expectation of mutual accountability and fidelity to the terms of the covenant. When God forged the covenant with the Jewish people on Mt. Sinai, it was a pledge of God’s protection, and it would forever permit them familiar access as the Chosen People. For their part, the Jewish people were to observe the dictates of the law, summarized most succinctly here in the form of the Ten Commandments. To be in a covenantal relationship with the Lord God requires an exclusive relationship, just as discipleship with Jesus—ritualized in baptism—demands a total allegiance to him and none other. Postures of the Mass In the Mass, we pray not only with our lips, but with our bodies as well. We stand when the ministers enter. In Western culture, standing is a sign of attention, a mark of respect: all stand when the judge enters the courtroom, for example. Standing is also an ancient posture of pray-er, mentioned frequently in the Old Testament. When the readings begin, we sit down: a listening posture. Mary sat at Jesus’ feet to listen to his teaching; the crowds sat on the hillside or the seashore to hear his words. Kneel-ing is another posture that is full of meaning. It expresses adoration and worship, but it can also express humility and contrition. We bow: a sign of honor and reverence, acknowledging the presence of God, especially when we receive the Eucharist. And there are other ritual gestures as well—striking the breast, genuflecting, and of course making the sign of the cross. The liturgy invites us to pray with our whole person—with heart and mind, voice and body. —Corinna Laughlin, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Altar y mesa. Comunión y sacrificio. —Miguel Arias, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
