The Congress

The group of landscape ecology belonging to IUFRO (International Union of Forest Research Organizations) (IUFRO 8.01.02 Working Party on Forest Landscape Ecology) (Unit 8.01.02) and IALE (International Association of Landscape Ecology), in conjunction with the University of La Frontera and the Catholic University of Temuco invited to participate at the Latin American Congress of IUFRO Landscape Ecology and the Second Latin American Congress of IALE to be held in the city of Temuco (Province of Cautín, Chile) from November 28 to December 2, 2016, under the theme:

Bringing our society to the nature: conservation pre-serve, management and restoration of multi-functional landscapes

The event aims to foster communication and exchange of experiences and knowledge in technical and scientific, methodological and practical aspects relating to conservation, management and restoration of natural landscapes throughout Latin America. The event will serve as a platform for institutions, professionals, researchers and students interested in landscape ecology to interact and share experiences on current research topics, practical experiences and policy implementation.

Thematicareas

The growing economic development of Latin American countries and increasing social inclusion policies implemented generates broader impacts on natural ecosystems. This creates new challenges for society, where proposals for management and conservation should be harmonized, and where political restoration of the affected landscapes should be prioritized in order to recover and maximize the ecosystem services that ecosystems provide to our present society and future. For this and to achieve these goals for the Congress, we have been proposed the following areas:

1. Land use, biodiversity loss and fragmentation2. Ecosystem management: Integrating ecological and economic models3. Mapping and assessment of ecosystems and their services4. Adapting to climate change in managed and natural landscapes5. Synergies and trade-off of plantations6. Impact of invasive species on landscape and human well-being7. Recovering biodiversity and ecosystem services through landscape restoration8. Social-ecological approach for ecosystem services management

Landscape Ecologists in Latin America: who are they and what are they doing?

The idea is to understand who is the community of landscape ecology researchers in Latin America, exploring their publications, international networks, main investigated topics, theoretical approaches and science-policy interfaces. I will use the Scopus databank to have a portrait of this community and to identify the main trends, gaps and opportunities for future research for Latin America.

Refugia, alternative stable states and historical legacies: New challenges for the management and restoration of fire-prone landscapes

Important shifts are underway in the way fire is being conceived to shape many landscapes and conversely how landscapes control fire regimes. The importance of physical structures (fire refuges), the coexistence of alternative fire resistant/ fire prone communities as well as the role of historical legacies that trap fire in certain regimes have gained much interest among fire and landscape ecologists. Using simple simulation models and the experience from northern Patagonian landscapes we aim discuss the challenges of fire management and post fire restoration under such novel feedback mechanisms.

Effects of silviculture on nutritional ecology of forest ungulates

Silvicultural activities such as even-age regeneration, thinning, prescribed fire and herbicides alter the amount and nutritional quality of understory vegetation used as forage by wild ungulates. Using new models of nutritional carrying capacity and hand-raised, tractable animals, we examined the effects of forest management on deer and elk in northwestern United States.

Seven decades of dendrochronology in Latin-America: History, lessons and projections

Research based on tree growth rings greatly increased during these last years in Latin-America, resulting in the building of a powerful net of tree chronologies in a wide range of natural ecosystems. This net cover large areas and ecological conditions, and representing a unique opportunity to understand the geographical associations among ecosystems, as well as among species at local al regional scales. This conference will present the main advances and knowledge gaps of the last seven decades of dendrochronology in Latin-America.

It is successful the ecological restoration? Lessons learned from global meta-analysis

Ecological restoration reach to an unprecedented historical goal due to the advances in scientific research, as well as favourable national and international policy-making. It successful depends on the proposed goals, and can be evaluated through the restoration progress and multiple ecological integrity indicators. Results of several meta-analysis studies developed for several ecosystem types allows to understand the success of the ecological restoration al global level.

Landscape ecology and the management of exotic species

As landscapes become increasingly fragmented due to human activities, the long term status of species becomes increasingly dependent upon their movement ecology among isolated habitat patches. The recognition of this fact has been integrated into the field of conservation biology for some time. Much of the early work incorporating a landscape approach to conservation centered on understanding the role of corridors in connecting habitat across the landscape. This was mostly in the context of enhancing the long term survival of species at risk of extinction by increasing the rate of movement between areas of suitable habitat. However, when the goal is to decrease the impact of exotic species, the opposite approach, i.e., preventing movement, may apply. With this in mind, I will discuss the potential use of an understanding of spatial network structure as a tool for enhancing the impact of active removal of species from a landscape when resources are constrained.

Congress scholars

One day field trips will be organized during the third day of the congress, in order to visit different localities and landscapes following the main thematic areas proposed for the congress.

The authors will be invited to submit the full version of the papers to elaborate Special Issue proposals and chapters for a book. These invitations will be based in the contents and quality of the accepted abstracts. Those authors that accept this invitation will have an extra time to send the full version of the works, where the next deadlines will be communicated soon. The different proposals will be presented in journal and books, where the potential ones to date are: Ecología Austral (ASAE Argentina) ISSN 0327-5477, and Life Sciences Series (Springer).

Financial aid for students of Latin America, undergraduate and/or graduate who submitted contributions as first author and have made the registration payment for the event will be offered. Quotes will be limited and the eligibility criteria will be made according to: (i) background of the candidate (send a brief curriculum vitae), (ii) quality and content of their contributions according to the topics of the conference, and (iii) amount requested of financial aid. Those request that solicitate a partial support of air-tickets or bus-tickets and/or per-diem will be prioritized. The candidates must also send in the mail the main reasons for the application and how it can influence in the development of his career, send the e-mail to: [email protected].
