Nuestra Parroquia

In the Thurs, Aug 17 Chronicle, conservative columnist Cal Thomas began his article this way:

“In the South during the Jim Crow era, the “one-drop rule,” codified into law, asserted that if a person had just one drop of African-American blood, they were considered “black.” I wonder what we’d learn if we gave former KKK leader David Duke and the “white nationalists” who caused havoc in Charlottesville last Saturday a DNA test to determine their racial makeup? Henry Louis Gates Jr., a Harvard professor, discovered in ‘Finding Your Roots,’ his PBS series on race in America, that there are no purebred humans.”

Prompting my quoting Cal Thomas was a sheerly by chance discovery of notes I took at an annual Fall Conference of Priests a few years ago. I don’t recall why an anthropologist was our guest speaker that year, but according to my random notes this is some of what he had to say:

All primates come from one ancestral primate. We came from one original cell, 3.8 billion yrs ago. It gave rise to all the different life forms we are today. We all came from one man. Why are we different colors? The original population is African. We are mutants. As humans migrated north, there was an advantage for lighter & lighter skin so they could have children and continue. The gene mutated that gives rise to color. It is the same gene that gives different colors to fish, as gives different color to races. The scientist added: “Things have price, we have dignity. We’re priceless by the blood of Christ.”

Cal Thomas continued, writing that: “The white supremacists marching in Charlottesville said they want to ‘take America back.’ Take it back from whom and for what purpose? What is it about America that makes some people want to seize it from other people?” He concluded his article saying of hate groups, “Not much can bring us together these days, but this kind of hatred should unite all Americans who have a spark of decency in their hearts.”

This week Bishop Walkowiak addressed this theme in his following remarks:

“Racism is an evil which endures in our society and in our Church. Almost 40 years ago, the Bishops of the United States wrote a pastoral letter on racism entitled “Brothers and Sisters to Us” and this was the opening line. Unfortunately, this statement still rings true today. The Church has a tremendous responsibility to encourage dialogue and heal tensions associated with the racism in our communities, our nation, and our world.

The recent events which occurred in Charlottesville, Virginia reminded us that while many of us may not experience or be aware of racism every day, it exists in many hidden ways. Too often many of our fellow brothers and sisters experience the effects of it daily. These events remind us that racism is real.

It is a sin that can be present within our parishes, schools, and communities and it is our responsibility as shepherds to bring people together in dialogue, encounter, and conversion. While we cannot singlehandedly solve the problem of racism nor reverse its effects, we are called to move forward in seeking a solution to this sin.

I encourage you to pray for our communities and our nation in which greater dialogue is needed. Please use the attached resources from the USCCB as a place to begin your conversations and prayer with your community.
