Pastoral Letter [The Pastoral Letter will be written by a different member of our pastoral staff each week. This letter will be reflective of the readings or Gospel for that Sunday and will be written through the lens of their ministry here at our Parish. We hope you will enjoy the perspectives of the wonderful staff we have here at St. Joseph’s.]

Gatherings of great crowds have become commonplace in our everyday life. So much so that we sometimes fail to take note of them. 40,000 people gather on a Saturday afternoon for a baseball game, 19,000 come together for a basketball or hockey game. Over 50,000 individuals ran in the 2017 LA Marathon. They gather either as a participant or as a spectator but in 2-3 hours the event is over and they return to their regular routine, waiting for the next big event. Mark writes that “People of the whole Judean countryside and all of Jerusalem were going out to see John. They were being baptized by him in the Jordan as they acknowledged their sins” (Mk 1:5). Can you imagine what this would look like in the year 29 AD? A constant movement of people from the towns and villages going out to see a man dressed in camel’s hair and eating locusts. As strange as this image is it was a life changing event for the people of Judea and Jerusalem. These great crowds were drawn to John and his preaching but he in turn directed them to “One among you mightier than I” (Mk 1:7) Pope Francis writes in his apostolic exhortation The Joy of the Gospel “In all the baptized, from first to last, the sanctifying power of the Spirit is at work, impelling us to evangelization” (119). “In virtue of their baptism, all members of the People of God have become missionary disciples (120). In 2017, we will celebrate over 120 baptisms in English and Spanish. It is easy to estimate that over 2000 individuals will witness these baptisms at St Joseph. What a great way to evangelize. Bringing children to the sacrament of Baptism is made possible by the examples of our parents, ex-tended family and others who have evangelized through theirs words and action. This can be a life changing event for these children and their families. As we prepare ourselves in this Advent Season let us remember Isaiah’s urgings to “Prepare the way of the Lord and to make straight his paths” (Is 40:3). Do you see yourselves as missionary dis-ciples? What will we do to prepare this year differently than in years past? How can this prepara-tion change our lives and the lives of those we meet? Can we say as Isaiah did “Here I am, Send me” (Is 6:8) Deacon Ken Kleckner

NEWS OF COMFORT In a time of preparation, much of it having to do with material things, it is good to hear the words of Isaiah, “Comfort, give comfort to my people, / says your God” (Isaiah 40:1). In a time of such stress and rush, when our usual burdens are aug-mented by piles of Christmas preparations, we can choose to slow down, take some time to heal, and appreciate the enormous gift we are about to re-ceive. Christ, the Son of God, has become one of us, and knows our human limitations. Yet God, even now, is freeing us from the burdens that our inatten-tiveness to our God and to our deepest inner long-ings have heaped upon us. The Lord comes, not as a king with mighty armies, but as a shepherd lead-ing the flocks with care and tenderness. Isaiah prophesies good news: our oppression is over, our sins forgiven. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED “Passages” Grief Support has been ministering to our community for over a year. This is a unique Christ-centered support group

that is offered at St. Joseph’s Church to help those

individuals who are mourning the death of a loved one. This support group

Program Purpose: As Knights of Columbus, we have always been interested in the development of strong, vibrant families. In support of this philosophy and to create an even greater awareness of our many fine Catholic families, the Supreme Council instituted the “Family of the Month” Program in 1978. Since that time the “Family of the Month” Program has grown to be one of the Order’s most successful. St. Joseph Council 10287 has start-ed the Program to recognize and honor some of the outstanding Catholic Families in our St. Joseph Parish. At the beginning of each month, the Knights of Columbus will select a Family of the Month and present to them a statue of the Holy Family to take home and display in their homes for that month.

St. Joseph Council 10287 has selected Dennis and Karen Laiola, along with their daughter Gianna, as “Family of the Month” for December 2017. This is in recognition for their faithful service and many contributions to St. Joseph Parish. Dennis and Karen have raised three children and been a part of our parish since 1983. They co-chaired the Christ Cathedral Capital Campaign, were on the School and Church Finance Committees and are involved in St. Vincent de Paul. Karen has also been a school volunteer librarian. The Laiola Family leads by example, attending Mass weekly and actively participating at the Mass.

Q. Where do our RCIA candidates and catechumens go when they are dismissed after the homily?

A. The catechist for that Sunday leads these mem-bers of our community to a room prepared for faith-sharing of the Sunday readings. This time is an extension of the Sunday liturgy, and the partici-pants maintain an attitude of prayer. This Sunday gathering is different from the catechesis that take place in a more structured and formal learn-ing environment.

Tan-to es así que a veces no tomamos nota de ellos. 40,000 personas se reúnen en un sábado por la tarde para un partido de béisbol, 19,000 se unen para un partido de baloncesto o hockey. NOTICIAS QUE DAN CONSUELO En un tiempo de preparación, relacionado en gran medida con cosas materiales, es bueno escuchar las palabras de Isaías: “Consuelen, consuelen a mi pueblo, dice nuestro Dios” (Isaías 40:1). En un tiempo de tanto nerviosismo y prisa, cuando nuestras cargas habituales se duplican a causa de los miles de preparativos navideños, podemos elegir aminorar la marcha, dedicar un tiempo a curar las heridas y valorar el enorme regalo que estamos por recibir. Cristo, el Hijo de Dios, se ha convertido en uno de nosotros y conoce nuestras limitaciones humanas. Sin embargo, Dios, incluso ahora, nos está librando de las cargas que se nos amontonan por no prestarle atención a él ni a nuestros anhelos más profundos. El Señor llega, no como un rey con ejércitos poderosos, sino como un pastor que guía a los rebaños con amor y ternura. Isaías anuncia buenas noticias: nuestra servidumbre terminó, nuestros pecados han sido perdonados. ¿YA TIENE USTED UNA CORONA DE ADVIENTO?

Adviento comienza la semana del 3 de diciembre. Tiempo de sacar la corona de adviento y sus velas. Tanto las velas de cera, como todo el set de velas y la corona de adviento están disponibles para comprar en la oficina parroquial. Las cantidades son limitadas; las velas de cera únicamente están a $5 y todo el set está a $16.

Las formas para pre-registrarse para el Curso de Primavera de Confirmación para Adultos, están disponibles en las salidas de la iglesia o en la oficina parroquial. Debe de hacer una cita antes del 15 de enero del 2018. Acompáñenos a conmemorar una vez más la jornada de María y José. El ministerio de formación de fe estará presentando la Pastorela y celebrando la posada el 15 de diciembre del 2017, empezando a las 6pm.
