TEXT 1 :Lifeboats – Royal National Lifeboat Institution

    0. Q. Wh at is the RNLI?

    A. The RNLI (Royal National Lifeboat Institution) is a charity which saves lives at sea.

It is the oldest national lifeboat service in the world. With over 225 lifeboat stationsstrategically placed around the coasts of the UK and Republic of Ireland, the RNLI is themost effective, innovative and dependable lifeboat service.

    1. Q. Who founded the RNLI? A. Sir William Hillary, who was himself a lifeboatman, started the RNLI in 1824. There were

several individual lifeboat societies around the coasts, but Hillary recognised the need for anational co-ordinating body.

    2. Q. Are there any full-time people? A. There is a full-time mechanic at each all-weather lifeboat station, whose job is to maintain

the lifeboat and its gear. There is one completely full-time crew at Humber in Yorkshire, where themen and their families live on the isolated Spurn peninsula.

    3. Q. Are the other people paid? A. Lifeboatmen and women are volunteers. However, they receive a few pounds each time

they are called out. They receive a small compensation towards loss of earnings.

    4. Q. Why a voluntary service? A. The most important reason for a voluntary service is efficiency. Each lifeboat station

attracts a number of the most able and active members of the community.

TEXT 2 :.The RNLI´s new ways of safeguarding lives

    Hovercraft

Hovercrafts are capable of reaching casualties in areas which a lifeboat either cannot operate orwould take a long time to reach. There are a number of areas where a hovercraft and a lifeboat

can work together to improve lifesaving.

You are going to read a letter to Agony Aunt.

Choose the correct answer (a, b or c) to complete each statement. Mark the correct answer with an (X)as in the example (0).

    TEXT:

    Dear Agony Aunt,

My Mom needs me twenty-four hours a day....

The relationship between me & my husband and my parents is difficult. The reasons for this is

my mother: she has to speak to me every day to make sure tha t we’re well and everything’s ok .

She will ring at the same time every day and if I’m not available, she keeps ringing and ringing all

evening. She won’t make one call and leave a message, she needs me to pi ck up the phone

when she wants. It makes me think something is wrong when I see all the missed calls to my

mobile and landline. My husband is now angry with the situation. When we get home we are

waiting for the phone to ring and get no peace even to enjoy our evening meal. How can I keep

    her happy?

    Mary-Jo

    Dear Mary-Jo,

You can’t and it’s very difficult – if not impossible – to make someone change their behaviour.

But you must try to change the situation. You and your husband need to set your priorities. The

way for you to do it is to be firm but loving, and not to tell her what she is doing but how it makes

you feel. If you say you don’t like her being in touch so much, she will argue it isn’t really so

much and all families do it… and you will continue arguing. But if you tell her you love her but the

situation at present is really making you unhappy, you may get somewhere. Tell her you

recognise she may need a lot of contact but , you have your own life to think of first. Tell her you’ll

talk to her a few times a week, and call in a few times too. And that is it. Sometimes, we need to

have limits. Sometimes, we can’t keep everyone happy but at least we can try. A bit of patience

and focus now can help you in the future.
