The Solar Energy Institute Instituto de Energa Solar, IES- is a research Institute of the PolytechnicUniversity of Madrid -UPM- devoted exclusively to photovoltaic (PV) research.

It was created in 1979 by Prof. Antonio Luque, from the previous Semiconductor Laboratory whose activityin photovoltaics started as a major one in 1975. The Instituto de Sistemas Fotovoltaicos de Concentracin (ISFOC) is a company incorporated in the Institutode Finanzas de Castilla La Mancha Group. It is the result of the R&D plan promoted by the Department ofEducation and Science from the Castilla La Mancha Government and the Institute of Solar Energy from theUniversidad Politcnica de Madrid. The project is financed by the Ministry of Education and Science. Theacquisitions of the CPV Plants and the headquarters have been cofinanced by Castilla-La Mancha FEDEROperative Program. Some of the ISFOC scientific and technologic equipments have been also cofinanced byR+D+i Pluriregional operative FEDER-FSE Program.

In order to generate key knowledge on this technology, ISFOC is executing a number of power plants fromvarious technologies: Isofoton from Spain, Solfocus from US and Concentrix from Germany, Emcore from

US, Arima Eco from Taiwan and Sol3G and Renovalia CPV from Spain. The objective of these pilot plants is toassist the industries in the setting up of pilot fabrication lines. There will also be very valuable informationobtained in the process such as reliability, suitability and production from each technology.At present, some international projects are being matured and launched. ISFOC will collaborate with itstechnological partners, Universities and regional governments. As examples, the NACIR project to be carriedout in Morocco and Egypt, or MASDAR in Abu Dhabi, E.A.U.
