UN DICHOpor Roberto Mondragón

BOMBONES DE NUECES Y MIEL

Ingredientes

300 g de nueces peladas.150 g de miel.

150 g de chocolate puro o de repostería.

Partir en trozos grandes el chocolate, ponerlo en un cazo yfundirlo. Retirarlo del fuego y dejarlo templar. Mientrastanto, triturar ligeramente las nueces peladas, ponerlas enun bol, añadir la miel y remover con cuidado. Añadir el cho-colate fundido, mezclar los ingredientes con una cucharade madera hasta obtener una mezcla homogénea. Ponerésta en un lugar fresco, o bien en la hielera y dejarlaenfriar. Volver a la mezcla preparada formando con lasmanos varias bolitas del tamaño de una nuez. Ponerlassobre un papel vegetal, conservarlas en un lugar frescohasta que el chocolate se solidifique y disponerlas en mol-des de papel sobre la fuente de servir.

Sometimes I close my eyesand visualize the MesillaValley as it looked when I

moved here from Weir,Kansas in 1898, but when Iopen my eyes, the vision

has vanished.

The Río Grande was verywide and very high and so

swift that the sticks wetossed into it were carried

down stream in a twinkling.

When R. C. Bailey told usthat he was going to ferryus across the river, we,

meaning us kids, thoughthe meant fairy.

I was just dying to ask himabout it, but in those days

children were trained not toquiz grown ups.

Father found farming to bea bigger job than he

expected it to be, for hehad been a mining man foryears and knew very little

about agriculture.

One of our chief amuse-ments at the church gather-

ings were candy pulls.

The boys delighted to stickthe warm taffy into the girls'long hair. And the only wayto remove the candy was to

cut the hair.

The first school I attendedwas a one room affair at

Chamberino.

The floor was packed dirt,and the benches were

crude hard seats without aback rest of any kind.

We used slates and pencils, too.

There was a big tin pail ofwater with a tin dipper

floating in it.

We didn't know very muchabout such things as dates,for the young men called at

the homes of the eligibleyoung ladies.

Hay rides well chaperonedwere included in ouramusements, too.

The old-fashioned Sundaydinner was wonderful.

Sometimes two or threefamilies would drive in onSunday and remain for

dinner.

All of the bread, pies,cakes, doughnuts andcookies were baked on

Saturday.

And if we were going tohave a Virginia baked hamthat was usually baked the

day before, too. We raised our own vegeta-bles and we had a variety

of summer squash, mashedpotatoes, yellow snap

beans, green Kentuckywonders, lettuce with

homemade French dress-ing, relish, fresh tomatoes,

sliced cucumbers and candied sweet potatoes.

We always had two kinds ofpie, white layer cake,

yellow loaf cake, cookiesand doughnuts.

I have lived in the valleysince I was ten years old.

Some people think that thebuilding of the Elephant

Butte Dam was the greatestevent in history.

To me it was the time theybuilt a bridge strong

enough to resist the RíoGrande and to really stay

ACTIVIDAD: PLANEAR UNA CENA PARA EL DOMINGO

Materiales Necesarios: lápiz y papelNúmero de Participantes: 3 o más

Antes de empezar el juego, cada estu-diante debe tener la tabla abajo con 8columnas. Las columnas encabezan conlas categorías nombre, apellido, ciudad (opaís), animal, color, fruta (o vegetal), cosay total.

Se empieza con Participante A yParticipante B. Participante A empieza pordecir la primera letra del alfabeto en vozalta. Luego sigue diciendo las demás delas letras en silencio. Participante B espe-ra no más muy poco y grita: “¡Basta!”Participante A repite en voz alta la últimaletra que dijo en silencio. Con esa letra, losestudiantes llenan sus columnas con pala-bras que empiezan con esa letra. Siguenasí hasta que pasa una media hora. El quetiene más palabras gana.

Indian Affairs Departmentby Governor Bill

Richardson.

Secretary Warren is anative of Santa Clara

Pueblo.

His mother and father areDave and Aurea Warren.He and his wife Pamela

have 3 children.

Before becoming Secretary,Warren served two termsas Lieutenant Governor of

Santa Clara Pueblo.

In addition, he has servedas Tribal Interpreter, Tribal

Treasurer and TribalCouncilmember.

Secretary Warren workedfor 16 years to assist Santa

Clara and other tribes tomap, protect and reacquire

their ancestral lands.

A very positive result ofthese efforts by Alvin is the

reacquisition by SantaClara Pueblo of 16,000acres of ancestral land.

Warren is a graduate ofDartmouth in History andNative American Studies.
