GOSPEL MEDITATION - ENCOURAGE DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF SCRIPTURE

August 23, 2020

21st Sunday in Ordinary Time

The only way to know God is to love God. Our minds will never fully grasp the mystery of God, but our hearts and souls can learn to love the mystery. Years ago, when life had a more innocent quality to it, we be-lieved what we were told or witnessed, unless there was direct evidence otherwise. This was especially true if the information came from someone in authority. In a sense, we were a bit more gullible on one hand but also more trusting on the other. The latter is an admirable quality that sadly can be eroded when we realize we have been duped. With education and technological advances, we find ourselves more skeptical and less likely to too quickly accept and believe what we see and hear. For all of the good that social media can do, it can also easily distort reality and truth. Photoshop and a myriad other technological truths can add to, fabricate, and make even the non-existent seem real. It is amazing. How far do we allow this obviously justifiable skepticism to take us? Questioning and doubting are healthy ele-ments of any good relationship as long as we don’t allow them to turn us away from a deeper experience of love and encounter. If we cannot get our minds around something or empirically justify or prove it, we tend to declare it a hoax, untrue, or unauthentic and walk away. The very same trust that can quickly be eroded is ex-actly what is essential for all of our relationships, especially our relationship with God. With all things and people that make a profound claim on us, we have to trust in the absence of knowledge. Full self-investment involves plunging completely into the unknown! Simon Peter said to Jesus, “You are the Christ, the Son of the Living God.” Peter came to this knowledge, which is not “head knowledge” because of the relationship he shared with Jesus and what God was able to re-veal in and through that relationship. Peter simply “knew” because of love that this is who Jesus really is. The silent exchange of love between friends, and not an intellectual exercise of the mind, brought Peter to this place. When we stop and think about it, there are many things in life that we simply know but do not com-pletely understand. When someone sacrifices their own well-being for another, it may not make intellectual sense when examined. But it makes a world of sense when it is carried out. The vastness of reality and an en-counter with incomprehensible mystery all lead us to profound silence where we simply know something to be true. Have you trusted enough to allow your relationship with God to bring you to this place or are you still too skeptical? ©LPi

“Jesús les preguntó: Y ustedes, ¿quién dicen que soy yo”. Pedro contestó: “Tú eres el Mesías, el Hijo del Dios vivo”. (Mateo 16:15-16). Jesús lanza una pregunta fuera de serie que pone a sus discípulos a pensar en reali-dad quién es Él. Gracias a esa pregunta, Pedro confirma su fe y se afianza como roca firme de la Iglesia. Des-de entonces hasta ahora, el sucesor de Pedro, el Papa en Roma, es piedra, roca firme, que impulsa a la Iglesia a la fidelidad. Ahora, Cristo podría hacernos la misma pregunta a ti y a mí. ¿Quién es Jesús para ti? Sí, para ti, padre de fa-milia, estudiante de universidad, madre y padre soltero. Por mencionar a algunas personas. Yo creo que las respuestas variarían mucho. Sin embargo, hay que tener cuidado de no hacernos una imagen falsa de Jesús. Pedro, acertó diciendo que Él era el “Mesías, el Hijo del Dios vivo”. Y fue llamado dichoso, feliz por haber sido una revelación de Dios Padre. Algo había aprendido Pedro de las enseñanzas de Jesús en su tiempo de formación al discipulado. Poner atención a la enseñanza es crucial, y el Catecismo de la Iglesia Católica, en el número 100, dice: “El oficio de interpretar auténticamente la Palabra de Dios ha sido encomendado única-mente al Magisterio vivo de la Iglesia, al Papa y a los obispos en comunión con él”. “Y ahora yo te digo: Tú eres Pedro (o sea piedra), y sobre esta piedra edificaré mi Iglesia”. What’s Happening? Parish Center Dedication and Blessing Archbishop Sample is scheduled to visit our parish on Saturday, September 5 at the 5:30PM Mass to share in the joy of bless-ing our new Parish Center. The format of the celebration will follow the current Covid-19 restrictions for worship gatherings. Parishioners are invited to register for the Bilingual 5:30 PM Mass on the parish website https://seas-aloha.org. Because Mass seating is limited to 50 individuals, the Mass will be live streamed outside the church building where additional seating will be available. Parishioners are reminded to wear masks and maintain social distancing. Archbishop Sample and Fr. Jeff will pro-cess after Mass to the North Entrance of the Parish Center for the Dedication and Blessing. To recognize and celebrate the hard work and commitment of our faith community, a toast (wine and fruit punch) will be made following the Blessing. The Parish Center will be open after Mass on Sept 5 & 6 for parishioners to walk through to appreciate the quality and exceptional design of the building. Mark Your Calendar and Come Celebrate! Landscaping Plans for Parish Center We are most pleased to announce that because of the generosity of our faith community we have exceeded our goal of $2500 for landscaping around the Parish Center! Thank you one and all for your contributions! The majority of the selected trees and shrubs will be planted when cooler weather arrives; however, in preparation of Archbishop Sample’s visit in September, the main North Entrance area will be completed this month. The plantings will highlight a magnolia tree with accents of native shrubs and ornamental grasses. We are looking forward to adding to the beauty of the Parish Center with a selection of lovely trees and shrubs that are primarily evergreen and require minimal pruning and care. If you are interested in helping with this project, please contact Deacon Jesus. Good things are happening at SEAS! Liturgical Items for Chapel Many parishioners have inquired about liturgical items needed to appropriately furnish our new Chapel. We are blessed that parishioners are offering to purchase or make financial contributions towards Chapel items. Here is a list of primary liturgical items that are needed and will be purchased when funds are available: Sanctuary Lamp $2,150, 2 matching Altar Candle holders $545 each and Holy Water Font $525 Ciborium $1,495 Chalice & Paten $1,450. 2 Altar cloths - $556 each Chapel donations may be placed in the Sunday Offering basket and marked: Chapel Donation. If you wish to make a donation for a specific chapel item, please contact Carmen in the church office. A parishioner has generously offered to purchase a corpus and tabernacle. The altar, celebrant and deacon chairs, ambo, and tabernacle stand are being designed, built, and donated by a parishioner and will be completed in the near future. Our faith community is truly blessed with many generous and talented individuals who continually demonstrate how to be a disciple of our Lord, Jesus Christ.

¿Qué está pasando? Dedicación y Bendición del Centro Parroquial El Arzobispo Sample está programado para visitar nuestra parroquia el sábado 5 de septiembre en la Misa de las 5:30PM para compartir la alegría de bendecir nuestro nuevo Centro Parroquial. El formato de la celebración seguirá las restricciones actuales de Covid-19 para reuniones de adoración. Los feligreses están invitados a registrarse para la misa bilingüe de las 5:30 PM en el sitio web de la parroquia https://seas-aloha.org. Debido a que los asientos para la Misa está limitado a 50 per-sonas, la Misa se transmitirá en vivo afuera del edificio de la iglesia. Nuestra comunidad de fe está verdaderamente bendecida con muchas personas generosas y talentosas que continuamente demuestran cómo ser un discípulo de nuestro Señor Jesucristo.
