SIEMPRE EN VANGUARDIA ALWAYS IN THE VANGUARDEn el mes de febrero seguimos celebrando en Madrid el comienzo de un nuevo año. Aunque en esta ocasión será el Año Nuevo Chino, que este 2019 es el del cerdo, asociado a la fortuna y al éxito. Un gran desfile pondrá la nota de color durante estos primeros días en la ciudad, que se prepara para acoger por todo lo alto una nueva edición de ARCOmadrid, la Feria Internacional del Arte Contemporáneo, con Perú como país invitado.

Otras ferias de arte emergente, como son Art Madrid, JustMad, Urvanity Art y Drawing Room, nos permitirán fijarnos en las vanguardias, que en el caso del teatro nos llegan de la mano de Angélica Liddell, en los Teatros del Canal. Otra mujer, Julia, monumental obra de Jaume Plensa instalada en la plaza de Colón, preside la imagen de portada de este número, por cuyas páginas desfilan otros grandes nombres del arte universal, como Toulouse-Lautrec y Balthus, protagonistas también del invierno en Madrid.

Madrid will continue to celebrate the start of the year in February, with the Chinese New Year. 2019 is the Year of the Pig, an animal associated with fortune and success. A large parade will fill Madrid with colour as the month gets off to a start, and the city will be gearing up to pull out all the stops for a new edition of ARCOmadrid, the International Contemporary Art Fair, with Peru as the guest country.

We’ll be able to check out the latest avant-garde offerings at other emerging art fairs, such as Art Madrid, JustMad, Urvanity Art and Drawing Room, as well as at the theatre, with Angélica Liddell’s play at Teatros del Canal. Another woman, Julia, a monumental work by Jaume Plensa installed in Plaza de Colón, has pride of place on the front cover of this edition, whose pages feature a host of other key names in world art such as Toulouse-Lautrec and Balthus, who will also be focal points of Madrid’s winter season.

Entre el 27 de febrero y el 3 de marzo, Madrid se convierte en la capital mundial del arte contemporáneo con la celebración de su gran feria anual, que cuenta con Perú como país invitado.

A total of 230 galleries from 30 different countries will take part in the 38th edition of the Madrid International Contemporary Art Fair, which will increase its focus on the “dialogues”, or interplay, between different artists this year. Showcasing the work of creators from different gen-erations is one of the aims of this major event devoted to contemporary artistic expression, which promotes the explo-ration of new talent. Un total de 230 galerías procedentes de 30 países protagonizan la 38ª edición de la Feria Internacional de Arte Contem-poráneo de Madrid, centrada este año más que nunca en los diálogos entre artistas. Dar a conocer la obra de crea-dores de distintas generaciones es uno de los objetivos de esta gran cita con las vanguardias, que impulsa la explo-ración de nuevos talentos. Por primera vez estarán presentes en la feria galerías como Meyer Riegger, Rodeo, Timothy Taylor y Edward Tyler Nahem, que vie-nen a sumarse a otras que confirman su confianza en ARCOmadrid, como Alexander and Bonin, Carlier Gebauer, Chantal Crousel, Esther Schipper, Gregor Podnar, Hauser & Wirth, König Galerie, Raffaela Cortese y Thaddaeus Ropac.

En este 2019 la feria madrileña sigue apostando por la presentación de proyec-tos de artistas individuales o en diálogo de manera que vuelve a dar cabida a la propuesta SOLO/DUO. De las galerías del Programa General, 25 dedicarán su estand a uno o dos artistas, entre los que se encuentran Miriam Cahn, Marcius Galan, Lia Perjovschi y Cinthia Mar-celle. El programa Diálogos contará con 13 galerías, en las que se presentará en profundidad la obra de artistas como Lui-sa Strina, DVIR, Patricia Ready, PPOW y Proyectos Ultravioleta. La sección Opening volverá a centrarse en galerías con una trayectoria de un máximo de siete años con el objetivo de aportar nuevas experiencias estéticas. En la misma línea, podrán verse, distribuida por toda la feria, 20 piezas de gran formato firmadas por

Pero si algo define la edición de este año será la presencia de Perú como país invi-tado. La selección realizada por la comi-saria Sharon Lerner trae a Madrid a la generación más internacional de artistas, muchos de los cuales han desarrollado buena parte de su carrera en otros países. El programa Perú en ARCO reunirá a crea-dores como Fernando Bryce, Teresa Burga, Sandra Gamarra, Miguel Agui-rre, Antonio Páucar o Herbert Rodrí-guez, a los que hay que añadir el nombre de artistas del país que participan en otras secciones, como Daniel Jacoby, Danie-la Ortiz y Lúa Coderch.

The 2019 edition of the Madrid fair will continue to strive to present projects by individual artists as well as artists whose works strike up a figurative “dialogue” with each other. In keeping with this aim, it will once again feature the SOLO/DUO sec-tion. 25 of the galleries in the fair’s General Programme will devote their stands to one or two artists, including Miriam Cahn, Marcius Galan, Lia Perjovschi and Cin-thia Marcelle. The Dialogues programme will feature 13 galleries, which will offer a comprehensive overview of the work of artists like Luisa Strina, DVIR, Patricia Ready, PPOW and Proyectos Ultravio-leta. Once again, the Opening section will focus on galleries less than seven years old with the aim of proffering new aesthetic experiences. In the same vein, visitors will be able to view 20 large-format works displayed throughout the fair, by artists such as Waqas Khan, Jaume Plensa, Sol Calero, Engel Leonardo, Pepe Espaliú and Heini Aho.

If there’s one thing that defines this year’s edition, however, it’s the presence of Peru as the guest country. Curator Sharon Lerner has selected works that bring Peru’s most international genera-tion of artists to Madrid, many of whom have spent a great deal of their careers in other countries. The programme Peru in ARCO will feature creators like Fer-nando Bryce, Teresa Burga, Sandra Gamarra, Miguel Aguirre, Antonio Páucar and Herbert Rodríguez, and other sections will also include Peruvian artists, such as Daniel Jacoby, Daniela Ortiz and Lúa Coderch.

La ciudad de Madrid se abre a ARCO con un sinfín de exposiciones que nos proponen diferentes viajes, culturales y emocionales, por la historia y vida de Perú. Entre ellas, Nasca, cultura preco-lombina de una plástica sorprendente, en el Espacio Fundación Telefónica; Redes de vanguardia: Amauta y América Latina, 1926-1930, sobre el movimiento inte-lectual latinoamericano con artistas del indigenismo que acogerá el Museo Reina Sofía y Amazonías, una novedosa expo-sición de arte amazónico contemporáneo en Matadero Madrid. También podremos contemplar la obra de Raimond Chaves & Gilda Mantilla en CentroCentro y la de Maya Watanabe en La Casa Encendida.

The city of Madrid will receive ARCO with open arms, offering countless exhibitions that invite us on cultural and emotional journeys through Peruvian life and his-tory. Convertida ya en todo un referente, Art Madrid, que se define como una propuesta cercana al público y a la realidad del mundo del arte, alcanza su 14ª edición con la presencia de 50 galerías de 15 países y casi 200 ar-tistas, que aportarán una visión muy fresca del panorama actual. This fair devoted to emerging art will celebrate its ten-year anniversary in 2019. For the occasion, it has gathered together over 60 exhibitors from coun-tries like Austria, Brazil, Cuba, France, Italy, Mexico, the UK, the USA, Uruguay and Venezuela. It’s Portugal, however, that will be the main focus of this edition, with a section curated by Lourenço Egreja devoted entirely to Spain’s neighbour, in an attempt to create closer ties between the artistic scenes in the two countries. For his part, Eugenio Ampudia, one of Spain’s most internationally renowned artists, will be responsible for selecting a set of artists who focus on digital art.

This is the fourth edition of a fair that recog-nises the formidable presence of contempo-rary drawing in the visual arts. The third edition of the premier Spanish fair devoted to New Contemporary Art, a term that encompasses urban art-based disci-plines such as post-graffiti, surrealist pop and new pop art, is a unique opportunity to enjoy the work of top global artists from these genres. Galleries as iconic as Italy’s Wunderkammern, Russia’s RuArts, Berlin’s Urban Spree and Spain’s My Name’s Lolita Art, Yusto/Giner and SC Gallery will take part in the exhibition programme, which will be rounded out by a section of solo shows by artists Dan Witz, Miss Van, Jan Kaláb and Sam3, as well as mural interventions all over the city.

Comienza el Año del Cerdo y Madrid lo celebra con un sinfín de actividades para descubrir todas las tradiciones de la comunidad china. Habrá arte, gastronomía, música… y muchas sorpresas.

As the Year of the Pig gets off to a start, Madrid will celebrate the occasion with scores of activities offering a chance to discover all of the Chinese community’s traditions. There will be art, gastronomy, music... and a host of surprises.

Danza, música, cine, artes marciales, gastronomía o literatura son algunas de las propuestas para el encuentro con los vecinos y vecinas de esta gran comunidad residente en Madrid y disfrutar todos jun-tos de la Fiesta de la Primavera. Para ello habrá un amplio programa de actividades para todos los públicos. Aunque el grueso de las actividades será del viernes 8 al domingo 10 en el barrio de Usera, habrá eventos en otros distritos de Madrid hasta el 24 de febrero.

El día 5 arranca el Año Nuevo con una muestra de caligrafía efímera, acompa-ñada del sonido de la Pipa, un instrumento musical tradicional, en la plaza de Callao. Desde la tarde del viernes 8 hasta la tarde del sábado 9, en la plaza situada frente al edificio de la Junta Municipal del Distrito Usera se podrá disfrutar del Mercado de la Primavera, donde comprar, degustar y visitar estands con artesanías y gran va-riedad de productos chinos. En la misma plaza, habrá una carpa con el Escenario del Año del Cerdo, en el que se sucede-rán más de 50 espectáculos. Entre ellos, conciertos de bandas chino-españolas de pop-rock alternativo, flamenco, exhi-bición de artes marciales o desfiles de trajes traídos de China. Citas ineludibles son la Ceremonia de la Luz con fuegos artificiales (sábado, 19:00 h) y el tradicional pasacalles del Año Nuevo Chino (día 10), con la participación de más de mil artistas.

Aprendiendo con el Año Nuevo es otro de los platos fuertes, que incluye talle-res para todas las edades, orígenes e identidades impartidos por especialistas en cultura china, sobre artes marciales, juegos tradicionales, papel recortado y pintura tradicional. Y para descubrir los restaurantes y establecimiento más signi-ficativos del barrio, y conocer las historias que hay detrás de ellos, se han diseñado los recorridos Viaje por La Ruta de la Usera. Los amantes del cine documen-tal tendrán la oportunidad de conocer la realidad de inmigrantes chinos jóvenes y ancianos en España y hablar con los propios directores en la actividad Sesión doble y coloquio, en la que destaca es-pecialmente el cortometraje Wan Xia, la última luz del atardecer, de Silvia Rey. El colofón de la Fiesta de la Primavera será un gran espectáculo de magia, aéreos, malabares y contorsionismo.

In addition to celebrating the Spring Fes-tival together, at this gathering alongside Madrid’s large community of Chinese resi-dents we’ll be able to enjoy offerings like dance, music, film, martial arts, gastron-omy and literature, thanks to an extensive programme of activities for all members of the public. The bulk of the activities will take place between Friday the 8th and Sunday the 10th in Usera neighbour-hood, but there will also be events in other districts of Madrid until 24 February.

The New Year will begin on the 5th with an ephemeral calligraphy exhibition ac-companied by the sound of the pipa, a traditional Chinese musical instrument, in Plaza de Callao. From the evening of Fri-day the 8th to the evening of Saturday the

9th, the square opposite the headquarters of the Municipal Government of the District of Usera will host a Spring Market featuring stalls where visitors can browse, try and buy artisanal goods and a wide variety of Chinese products. In the same square there will be a tent containing the Year of the Pig Stage, which will host over 50 shows including concerts by Chinese-Spanish alternative pop rock bands, fla-menco, martial arts demonstrations and fashion shows featuring clothes imported from China. Events not to be missed are the Light Ceremony, featuring a fire-works display (Saturday, 7pm), and the traditional Chinese New Year parade (on the 10th), featuring the participation of over one thousand artists.

Learning with the New Year will be another of the event’s focal points, with workshops for people of all ages, origins and identi-ties given by experts in Chinese culture, devoted to martial arts, traditional games, paper cutting and traditional painting. In addition, the Exploring Usera itineraries have been designed for people who want to discover the neighbourhood’s most important restaurants and establishments and find out the stories behind them. Fans of documentary film will have a chance to discover the realities of life in Spain for Chinese immigrants both young and old and to talk to the directors themselves in the activity Double Session and Discussion (in Spanish), which will feature Silvia Rey’s particularly notable short film Wan Xia, The Last Light of Sunset. Finally, the Spring Festival’s grand finale will be a fantastic magic show featuring aerial, juggling and contortion acts.

A través de pinturas, dibujos, carteles e ilustracio-nes, la exposición muestra la producción del artista en sintonía con la de otros creadores contemporá-neos en el París de finales del siglo XIX. Madrid se adelanta a la conmemoración del quin-to centenario de la muerte del genio renacentista con esta gran exposición, que tendrá doble sede. En la Biblioteca Nacional podrán verse los Códices de Madrid, dos joyas manuscritas de Da Vinci que custodia la institución. En el Palacio de las Alhajas se exhibe la Tavola Lucana, el único retrato que repre-senta al maestro según algunos expertos. Madrid will commemorate the 500th anniversary of the death of the Renaissance genius a bit early with this fabulous exhibition, to be held in two venues. The National Library will display the Madrid Codices, two priceless Da Vinci manuscripts which are part of its holdings, and Las Alhajas Palace will display Tavola Lucana, which some experts believe to be the only self-portrait by the master artist.

El joven dramaturgo Alberto Conejero añade dos nue-vos actos a la Comedia sin título de García Lorca. Para construirlos se ha basado en notas de la actriz Margarita Xirgu y en citas anteriores de los textos del autor grana-dino, aunque, como él mismo dice, El sueño de la vida no pretende dar fin a nada sino “entregar al presente la intimidad con una voz”. Dirige Lluís Pasqual.

Young playwright Alberto Conejero has added two new acts to García Lorca’s Play Without a Title. He construct-ed them based on the notes of actress Margarita Xirgu and earlier quotes from texts by the writer from Granada, although as he himself says, El sueño de la vida doesn’t aim to complete anything, but rather “to bring a personal take with its own voice to the present-day”. Diseño y arte (1959- 1979), sobre la que fuera pionera en el diseño de mobiliario, Cuidado diseño, sobre artesa-nía española contemporánea, y Super-Packaging, en torno al diseño de envases.
