24 (25/09/2009)
CLEANFRUIT: High-reliability, non-chemical disinfestation system of fruits
and vegetables (FP7-SME-2007-1)
PROBLEM OR NEED:
Insect pest infestation of commodities is a major problem in production, storage, and marketing of agricultural commodities. The
formerly most usual treatments based on methyl bromide are strongly restricted in the EU due to health and environmental risks.
TECHNICAL SOLUTION:
Heat treatment based post-harvest methods may have harmful effects on product quality mainly due to prolonged treatment times.
CLEANFRUIT‟s proposed solution is based on radio frequency technology that provides a rapid, high-reliability treatment that is
free of the effects that may lower the general quality (such as flavour, scent, firmness, colour, etc.) of the harvested products, fitting
to the current EU regulations related to the treatment of agricultural commodities.
25 (25/09/2009)
ULTRAVEG: Development of a high power ultrasound system for the low-
cost, fast, effective and quality drying of fruit and vegetables (FP7-SME-2007-1)
PROBLEM / NEED:
Food drying is one of the oldest, simplest, and most effective ways
of preserving foods being the most modern method of commercial
drying for products such dried vegetables or instant coffee is known
as Accelerated Freeze-Drying (AFD). This method is an expensive
and energy intensive operation that can only be applied to products
that have a high value to consumers.
TECHNICAL SOLUTION:
The overall goal of this project is to bridge a technological gap in the
European dried food industry, by providing SME dried fruit and
vegetable producers with a cost effective, easily scalable and
versatile high power ultrasound pre-treatment methodology,
which will accelerate the drying process and preserve the quality of
the products by drying at lower temperatures.
26 (25/09/2009)
BCA_GRAPE: New biocontrol agents for powdery mildew on grapevine
(FP7-SME-2007-1)
PROBLEM / NEED:
Erysiphe necator is a key pathogen in traditional, integrated and organic
viticulture; the sole BCA currently available on the EU market is not effective
enough. So far no reliable solutions exist for the non-chemical control of E.
necator.
TECHNICAL SOLUTION:
The main goal of the BCA_grape project is to develop prototypes of new
commercial Biological Control Agents (BCAs) against Erysiphe necator, the
fungus causing the powdery mildew of grapevine. The project aims to:
• Find new BCAs, highly effective and well adapted to the European
conditions.
• Develop a technology for the industrial mass production and formulation
of the new BCAs
• Develop and validate a molecular protocol for BCAs identification in
order to distinguish them, monitor their spread and survival in the
vineyard, and trace their presence along the grape production chain.
27 (25/09/2009)
RESOLIVE: Adaptation of renewable energies technologies for the olive oil
industry (FP7-SME-2007-2)
PROBLEM / NEED:
The residues of olive milling are often kept in reservoirs, where
dry to a thick paste. This storage means an enormous demand
of space and creates several environmental problems.
TECHNICAL SOLUTION IN THE SECTOR:
This project proposes an environmentally sound alternative:
Through gasification and biogas production in decentralized
units, each manufacturing company could dispose of their by-
products in a sustainable way. RTD performers will lead the task
of finding out the ideal procedure for biogas production from
residues of olive production to show the producers economical
lucrative ways for an optimized valorization of these residues.
28 (25/09/2009)
CLEANHIVE: Detecting the Pathogen that Threatens European Honey Bees
(FP7-SME-2007-2)
PROBLEM / NEEED:
The beekeeping sector is facing a „Colony collapse disorder‟
phenomenon, which causes an alarming number of honey
bees colonies deaths in Europe and USA.
Two similar pathogens with very different consequences are
difficult to differentiate with conventional methods due to
their similar morphology (visual inspection, microscope
examination) (Nosema apis, European bee pathogen that
rarely induce high mortalities, which symptoms of disease
allow fast treatment and Nosema ceranae , Asiatic bee
pathogen highly virulent that induce high mortalities and
frequently goes undetected till the point of collapse).
TECHNICAL SOLUTION IN THE SECTOR
Develop an efficient and cost-effective portable device
consisting of a lateral flow immuno-chromatographic device
with an optical scanner reader including a control unit and a
data management system allowing the system to detect and
identify both Nosema species under field conditions in a
quick, sensitive, portable and easy to use for non-technical
staff manner.
