What is Corpus Linguistics?

As a theory:  “…corpus linguistics re-unites the activities of 

data gathering and theorizing […] this is leading to a qualitative

change in our understanding of language…” (Halliday, 1993: 24).

As a methodology: “…the study of language based on

examples of  ‘real  life’ language use and a methodology rather thanan aspect of language requiring explanation or description” 

(McEnery & Wilson, 1996: 1).
